Overtime Letdown: Eastern Michigan Falls to In-State Rival Broncos 26-23
Controversial reffing in overtime as Eastern Michigan has two game winning touchdowns called back | Clayton 'shocked and appalled' by calls | WMU scores touchdowns on defense and special teams.
AP Kalamazoo – The Eastern Michigan Eagles loss their first conference game of the season in controversial fashion, as they fell to in-state rival Western Michigan 26-23 in overtime. The Broncos would receive the ball first in the overtime period and put up a field goal. On the ensuing possession, the Eagles would punch in an eight yard touchdown run on third and goal, only to see it nullified by a holding penalty. On the very next play, a two yard run up the middle, Eastern Michigan would again be flagged for holding, backing them up to the 28 yard line. This time, senior
QB Alex Gillett connected with
WR Nick Olds on what appeared to be the game winning score. However, the Eagles would be flagged for the third straight play on another holding call, pushing them back to around the 40 yard line. Two long throws by Gillett would fall incomplete as Eastern Michigan lost in heartbreaking fashion.
Western Michigan cornerback Tronic Williams would secure this interception in the third quarter and return it for a score. The Broncos only touchdowns came from the defense and special teams.
In a game that was expected to be an offensive shootout, both teams came out surprisingly flat. Broncos star senior
QB Alex Carder had a miserable day under center only completing six passes and throwing for under 60 yards. However, junior
HB Tevin Drake was able to pick up the slack as he ran for over 150 yards.
For Eastern Michigan, Gillett had a very shaky performance completing just thirty three percent of his passes and threw a costly pick six in the third quarter. Freshman
HB Robert Thomas played sporadically throughout the game as he battled a sprained elbow. He is not expected to miss any additional time with the injury.
"In all my years of coaching, I have honestly never seen anything like that. Thirty yards of penalties on three straight plays, including calling back two game winning touchdowns. I am shocked and appalled." -- Eagles Head Coach Dan Clayton
Eastern Michigan (4-4) will have to rebound quickly as they head home to take on the Temple Owls (2-4). The Owls are coming off a 36-22 home loss to conference leader, Miami. Temple is led on offense by star senior
HB Bernard Pierce (509 yds, 5 total TDs). However they have struggled in the passing game as senior
QB Mike Gerardi (853 yds, 5 TDs, 10 INTs) has struggled to protect the ball. This will mark the first time these two teams have played since 2009. Eastern Michigan has never defeated Temple. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 PM est.
