    UConn News Check-In; Bye Week

    ----------------------------------------

Diaco remaining (surprisingly) quiet on recruiting allegations, rumors to Michigan

Bob Diaco is doing a fantastic job handling the distractions that are surfacing and murmuring around his team this season.

Despite a pending offseason recruiting investigation and rumors of not only his but athletic director Warde Manuel's departure for Michigan at the end of the year, Diaco has led his troops to another successful season. Despite a loss last week to Iowa State that has all but ended UConn's playoff hopes and chance at a second straight national title, UConn sits 8-2, 21st in the country as the season draws near a close.

How has the coaching magician pulled it off? Employing a Bill Belichick like tactic. "Stay quiet", Diaco says. "Don't even look at ESPN, stay focused on the next game or practice, and focus on our problems after the season."

There has been no update from the NCAA on the investigation into recruiting violations since early in the season, when a statement was released saying they would begin after the season concluded.

As for the seemingly never ending coaching carousel rumors, Diaco has made it clear he is leaning toward returning for his sixth season on the UConn sidelines next fall.

"I said this in accepting the extension [back in January 2016], we've got something good going here. Look at that national championship banner up there. You can't tell me I don't have it good here."

We'll see. Diaco is reportedly signed through 2021.

Trebell getting attention for head coaching spots

UConn super assistant Bob Trebell, who has been the head scouter for the Huskies' recruiting this year, special teams coordinator and assistant offensive coordinator, is reportedly being targeted for the head coaching position at Hawai'i, according to the Associated Press.

Trebell, 43, has only been part of the UConn staff a year (he's worked with Northeastern before their shutdown, Arizona and Auburn as well), but is getting good exposure amongst his peers and is a popular choice to move up through the ranks some more in 2019. His high energy and brilliant special teams strategy and expertise has received lots of praise from the UConn staff, including Coach Diaco himself.

"Bob has been a fantastic asset to our staff this year", Diaco says. "His brain is absolutely built for football, and he's helped our recruiting efforts tremendously."

Hawai'i, whose coach Chuck Heater will be retiring at the end of the season, is looking for an option who is a proven recruiter and a younger choice to hold the spot for "a while", according to A.D. Siahone Pulaki.

We'll see what the future holds for Trebell, but it looks bright.

    UConn Recruiting

Thanks to Trebell, UConn's recruiting class is shaping up very nicely for 2019.

As of November 10, UConn has 7 4-star caliber recruits committed to suit up for Diaco's Huskies in September 2019, and all are likely to make impacts soon, if not immediately.

UConn Huskies Commits -- as of 11/10 Recruiting - 2018
    NAMEPOSCLASSHOMETOWNHTWTCALIBER
    J.P. ByersRBHSClaremore, OK6'2224
    Tony RushSHSGlenview, IL6'2188
    Jeremy BroadrickeDTHSE. Los Angeles, CA6'5260
    Marcus RodgersATHHSWestmont, IL6'4214
    Mike MoldenCBHSUniversal City, TX6'0207
    Lawron LeakCHSIrondequoit, NY6'3 301
    Kris WilliamsWRHSDunmore, PA6'0189

The headliner is the #2 safety in the nation, Tony Rush. The Illinois product is graded out at 75 overall, and figures to challenge with seniors Mike Stokes, Derek Robinson and sophomore Ross Sinclair for PT next fall. Rush will likely be the 4th safety in the rotation, meaning he will see most of his time in quarter and nickel formations.

Diaco might be most excited about Oklahoman tailback J.P. Byers. We talked about him in the last recruiting update, and though he'll almost definitely sit out next year, his size, speed and power won't keep him on the bench long.

The one player we didn't talk about last time who has committed is WR Kris Williams. The Pennsylvania product joins a mess at that position, where very little will be settled until the first week of the 2019 season. He has average height at 6', but is a technical receiver who has solid hands.

Everyone else we have talked about, and if you would like to go back and review the first recruiting update, view the post below.

    Recruiting Update 1

From those still not committed, UConn currently has the lead on 4* OT Kevin Jones, 3* OG Lui May, and 4* CB Kallan Slaughter and 3* CB Shavlion Wade.

5* Athlete Graham Patterson, a projected lineman, has committed to Syracuse.

Heads up, I realized I left noteworthy scores out of the Around the NCAA update. I'm fixing that right now.

I feel really bad for you. You just can't ever seem to catch a break with CMU.

Don't forget the loss to Incarnate Word, the win over Kansas and near victories over Alabama and Oklahoma St. (twice).

But think about it this way, you've been retained through 2 losing seasons to this point, why not make it 3? You'll have been with the program long enough so it's your players, your show, and hopefully more success.

Please don't call Army "Army West Point." Those CBS Sports Network announcers did that for the whole game yesterday, and it pissed me off greatly. Now, the one time UConn's on ESPN, I'm in Ohio at a wedding.

Wow, that's pretty awesome! I watched the game and absolutely, the kid can fly.

BTW, I am almost certain at this point that Purdue is leading their division in the Big 10.

The fact we didn't repeat this season is actually a good thing for me. Winning consistently early on isn't fun, it helps keep my interest in the dynasty and our recruiting, and it shows that I need to start recruiting better now that all the real players are gone after this season.

I mean...if you go back and look, my first two or three recruiting classes honestly weren't very good...That sets the tone for the next few seasons and I'm really wondering how that will go...

Very much enjoying seeing UTSA and all these other CAC teams finally clearing hurdles and getting bowl eligible this year. I said at one point toward the end of last season that I was aiming for 8 CAC's bowl eligible now that we have 16. I count 7 right now (not including GravyBoat who is with UConn for now)...and I am absolutely certain we'll see at least one more after this week.

I understand that! I'm excited to see if my coach can further his career, whether it is taking the job as a coordinator at a better school or possibly making the jump to HC. Probably not likely yet, only being his second year but it seems like every week my team is scoring around 30 points so our offense could be ranked pretty high!

I think it's safe to say at this point that our season is officially in wraps.

After a second straight loss for our UConn Huskies (I believe the first back to back losses since Diaco's first year at UConn in 2014), the Huskies fall back to 8-3, effectively ending any dying hope of a College Football Playoff berth, and now a Big 12 Title with Houston clinching this week. (Houston visits UConn next week for Senior Day at the Property).

This week's game against the Horned Frogs of TCU has pretty much summed up the past few weeks in Hartford: Overmatched.

TCU had the lead, the momentum from the get-go and never let go.

Only a minute into the game TCU found the scoreboard, with Foster Sawyer finding Vanarius Barrett for a big 15 yard TD, 7-0 early.

Despite a field goal from UConn, TCU came back firing and extended the lead for good early in the first. TCU's stellar senior QB Sawyer led a quick scoring drive, 9 plays for 75 yards ending in a 7 yard TD grab from Nick Harris.

After a UConn three and out, TCU pounded the rock down UConn's chest once again into the second quarter, picking up gains of 6 and 13 from Heisman contender Shaun Nixon, and 11 and 12 on midline reads from Sawyer. Shannon Lewis was the recipient of Sawyer's 3rd TD pass of the first half.

Meanwhile on the other end, UConn's offense was absolutely floundering. Outside of the field goal drive where Tanner Dean-Lowry and Arkeel Newsome led UConn to four first downs, UConn had picked up only 2 other first downs and around 30 yards. Predictably, the Huskies found themselves in a 21-3 halftime hole.

UConn did get on the board though thanks to inspired running from Newsome. The senior, who has stood out the last few weeks, picked up 52 on a wheel route as he blew past everyone on the Frogs' defense. Two plays later 'Keel was in the end zone on a 9 yard stretch to close the gap to 21-10.

However, UConn's trademark defense just couldn't make a stop. Sawyer found Lewis for 32, and Barrett twice for 32 more. Shentdrick Sams' 4 yard plunge for TD made it 28-10.

The Frogs were able to close up the game with 2:42 left in the 3rd after Nixon found fantastic blocking on a counter and rumbled 33 yards untouched for a TD.

Ron Johnson found the end zone a little later, but it was well too late and UConn fell without much of a fight 42-17 to the #5 Frogs. All around it was just a terrible day for the UConn D, with Sawyer torching Diaco and crew for 3 TD's, and Nixon adding in 2 more on the ground and 163 yards.

TDL and the offense continue to struggle, and that's to be expected with a fall enrollee under center. But the run game hasn't found any holes for weeks seemingly, and that's unlikely to change this season. With the aforementioned Houston Cougars clinching the Big 12 East, there's nothing really to play for if you're UConn except for the fact it's senior day.

UConn now needs to win out in order to make it three straight 10-win seasons. Can they do it? And what bowl will UConn get to now?
