NHL 16 Teach Me How/Strategy Thread

Saw this in an NBA and Madden forum thought it would be a good idea here as well!

Advice on better offense and defense positioning? It seems like everytime I get in the offensive zone I'm always doing the same thing over and over. I know that's my own fault. What's a good way to change it up?

With NHL 16 and how easy intercepting passes is and getting bumped off the puck can be like the above poster said taking it slower can help alot. Ill give a few pointers I have picked up so far.

          1. When on the break if the potential of a drop pass is there do it. That forward usually gets open
          2. 2on2 or 2on1 pass to ure other forward early. The AI usually over commits or the pass back to the other forward closer to the net works better then holding it the whole time
          3. On the break skating around the net the dishing across the ice or to the player infront is usually a good option
          4. If you are dangling. Slow down take your time. Even stoping with your player is best since it creates space and then let the defender(s) come to you so they make the first move. Then make your step.
Theres alot of small things needed to help make this work but I really dont wanna do a write up. If u have PS4 add my PSN: Allinium ill gladly voice chat and help.

Why are faceoffs so hard? The camera angle makes it a crap shoot. Is there a skill trainer for this?

I'll allow that link for now, but don't keep referencing it.

I, too, am having difficulty with the faceoffs. I have read numerous different guides, and am typically 60%+ in past years...but this year the computer is so difficult(eashl speaking, in be a pro I am over 55% in 6 games). I think the camera angle is tough, as I use overhead. I would rather have it use the faceoff close up angle until after the puck is dropped in future releases...but with that being said I still routinely get the "good timing" intermission tip as a two way forward and still can't win. I understand different moves counter, and try varying moves as well, but nothing seems to work for me. I just moved to rw in club and conceded before I broke something.

                    Hi,

could someone please explain to me how trading players works?

I play offline season mode (me vs cpu). Is it even possible to acquire new and better players in this mode? Free agents are not very good so I am looking for players to improve my clubs overall performance.

I know that I can edit the roster via the customize menu. However this results in a custom roster being created and the changes I made do not carry over into my running season. I guess the roster is part of the savegame so this does not work.

Any advice would be welcome. thx

In the Season hub (when you've entered Season mode and chosen a team), tab right until you see a box that says "Trade/Improve." From there, go into the Trade screen and pull the wool over the CPU's eyes.

Is there a way I can make my AI teammates play the boards more? They seem to transition to defense behind the goalie net which makes no sense.

Yeah but how does the mechanism work? Do I have to match the Trade Value of the player I desire? Or excel it?

For example if I want to have an elite player I would have to trade multiple quite good players? What is a salary cap? Do I have one? If yes where do i find it?

Is there a draft in offline season play?

Not sure if this should be here or in the glitch thread, but here goes.
In playoffs with continuous overtime, when you go to 2OT and on, it's treated as just 1OT. Score shows at, for example, 7:40 of overtime when it was 7:40 of the 2nd overtime. Also it just shows OT on the score overlay, not 2OT. I'm not sure why this is bothering me so much but it really is. Is there a setting to change this or is it a glitch? Thanks

If you're talking about the breakout, you'll want to switch your Breakout strategy to Stay Wide. If you're talking defensive AI, and wingers, Tight Point is probably what you want.

Yep. Trade Value is an indicator of how much value you'll be needing to give back. So, a higher trade value means you'll need to send more of your trade value the other way.

Elite players are tricky to get, unless you're willing to give up A LOT for them. It's still possible though. Depends what Trade Difficulty setting you selected when you entered the mode (default is Medium).

You have a salary cap, unless you turned it off in the pre-Season mode screen. The salary cap is around 71 million, I believe. You cannot exceed that value in your finances (i.e. contracts). The computer fixes (restructures contracts to a total below the max) all teams if you leave the salary cap on. The salary cap is displayed before the regular season starts.

In offline Season play there is no draft. Try Be A GM Mode for multiple seasons—there's a draft in that mode.
