Florida up to #2, TCU sneaks in at #4 to fill out Playoff Bracket

After their big win in the SEC Title Game, Florida has jumped up to #2 and will be the home team for at least one playoff game. The Gators, now 12-1, jumped from #7 to #2 and will face the 3rd ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in the Orange Bowl.

On the other hand, TCU needed a team ahead of them to fall, and that happened as Fresno St. lost to Wyoming in stunning fashion in the Mountain West Title Game. Having the better resume over all other comers, TCU moved to #4 despite sitting out Championship Week. They will face top ranked USC in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl.

The winners advance to the fifth College Football Playoff Championship, this year being held in San Antonio.

UConn to face Bucks in Cactus Bowl

Our UConn Huskies will wrap up their season by facing Ohio St. in the TicketCity Cactus Bowl. The Bucks fell below .500 early in the year, but have recovered and finished out 7-5.

    Full Bowl Map

Again, for those of you who may or may not be caught up, I started changing corporate sponsors of a bunch of bowl games a few months ago, as you'd see in real life. Found a list of Fortune 500 companies and related their locations to the games and went from there. There was a list of changes posted last season, but if anyone's curious I'll repost it. CAC bowl games are highlighted, couple CAC user showdowns! Still a few guys left out though (eh-hem, Coach Crenshaw). Even having 20 CAC's lined up for next year, let's get everyone to a bowl game next year.
I think we can do it!

      LSU's Miles retiring

The Mad Hatter is hanging up his hat.

LSU head coach Les Miles is set to retire following back to back 5-7 campaigns, his 13th and 14th seasons at LSU. Miles, 66, stated that "it was the best time" and that "they were likely to fire me anyhow."

LSU has a shortlist of candidates, including San Diego State's Sterlin Gilbert, Fresno State's Tim DeRuyter and UConn's Bob Diaco, though he has already denied interest and that he will remain at UConn for the 2019 season.

Miles compiled a 136-47 record at LSU and a 28-21 record in his four seasons at Oklahoma State for a 164-68 record in his career.

UConn assistant Trebell accepts Hawai'i head coaching job

A third member from the CAC fraternity is graduating up to a head coaching job.

UConn super assistant Bob Trebell has accepted the head coaching job at the University of Hawai'i, according to an Associated Press report, following now USC coach Quinn Shea and Washington State coach Kaelyn Willingham as the third CAC member to become a head coach.

This means Trebell will not be joining UConn on their trip to the TicketCity Cactus Bowl in Tempe when they face Ohio State, simply to get a jump start on recruiting and molding the program.

I can't thank Bob [Diaco] enough for his support and assistance, and I wish UConn the best moving forward.

But again, replacing all that we did from last year's team, I'll gladly take it. We've had lots of inconsistency on offense, the defense was a lot weaker than last year.

We'll be back next year though, no doubt. We'll have a little more experience and some new guys joining the fold to help us out. Jeff McNeal will find a home on as full-time tailback, TDL has a year under his belt, the wideouts get a bit better. We could be in good shape. As long as we don't lose Coach Diaco.

Thanks for checking in bud. Your CAC as well as the others will be created in-game (finally) at some point this weekend and I hope to be starting 2019 the first full week of October.
Awesome! Can't wait for next year!

It's fun watching UCONN and hearing a name on the commentary and thinking of this.

I want Georgia Tech to win it all, but I think it's more likely that USC or Florida does.

Why you being a ***** Guru? I realize we haven't been to a bowl game. I'm trying man. Seems to me that the problem is on the other side of the ball. My offense does good work.

If I get canned, I'd be interested in that assistant coach spot that just opened up over at UConn. What'd you call it? The "super assistant something or other"? Give me a season somewhere in a winning system, that'd be great for my resume

Neither can I. Next year is the first year where the team is completely mine, so we get to see how well I'm doing without borrowing Pasqualoni's and the first wave of Diaco's recruits.

Haha. The good ol' days. It's too bad you guys lost, but Navy is a good team, you guys have looked infinitely better than last year, and you guys will be better as Diaco's recruits get older and more experienced.

I agree it would be awesome to see GT win, but the thing is....if SC wins, I have a bad feeling someone is going to call bull because they're coached by my CAC.

Ah well. That UTSA-Rutgers game is going to be a good one. The two teams seem to be identical talent wise, it's just a matter of whose defense steps up.

Sorry if I've offended you. It's hard to place blame anywhere in your situation aside from collectively. You guys have been recruiting well, and the offense and defense have both had bad days in certain important situations. (I think to that Oklahoma State game where you lost 10-7, or the games where you guys score 35 or more and give up 40-50.) If you guys could just take care of these mid-level teams, you'd have lots of success.

You guys for next year return Darius Wood at QB for his senior year (if he stays healthy), Paul O'Toole is your backup and guy of the future, Cam Stith finally gets his big shot in the backfield. Jon Carson is graduating, but I think you guys will be OK in the receiving game. We'll see if you're around to enjoy it, but next year looks to be different.

It was more of a defense problem with you guys. Your job is absolutely safe for the time being. Nick Jeanty played really well, your receivers were fantastic, your freshman tailback held his own, it was just your defense just couldn't do it. Other CAC teams like UL Lafayette, UTEP and Central Michigan had similar problems this year.

I do CAC's by locating the fake coaches who appear after a few seasons in place of retiring coaches. (go through the dynasty editor and that's the easiest way to detect who's real/fake, there will be no job description to the left, or you if you don't recognize a name in the coach info menu in-game google search him to see if he exists). I just click R1 on the PS3 (no clue what it is for my 360 friends), create a new coach and assign jobs accordingly. I ask you guys what you want your coach to be like and voila.

Just adds some depth to your dynasty and a little extra storyline to follow. I hope to go through and add some more former NFL and college stars to come and coach at some point down the line. Problem is, I'm running out of offensive coordinators haha.

                            Choked by the Collier

UConn mounts furious comeback, but fall in triple OT courtesy of CPU cheese

I guess sometimes it's a good thing that the CPU absolutely does not want me to win certain games. Stupid Ohio State.

But anyhow, this one's going to be really tough to swallow. Especially because it may or may not be my fault.

After falling behind 24-0 in the second quarter and 27-6 at the half, UConn was able to climb out of the gutter, play clean, force overtime, and the CPU thanked us by handing Ohio State the victory on a golden platter courtesy of the overtime glitch. (Why don't we have the ball!?!?!?!?!?!)

Of course, this type of gut-wrenching loss could have easily been prevented. Our defense gave up a dynasty record 59 points over 32 minutes of play and a trio of overtime sessions, and this largely hung on OSU QB Stephen Collier's shoulders. His 247 pass yards and TD were nice, but his 219 rushing yards and 2 rushing TD's gave Coach Diaco a real-life nightmare.

Ohio State was the only team ready to play early, pouncing out to the early 24-0 lead on the strength of Collier's gashing runs. OSU had three players score those three TD's in Collier, Brandon Williams and Kelson Davis, displaying OSU's powerful O-Line.

Despite taking two quarters to get in gear, UConn finally did get it going in the third quarter. Ron Johnson pushed the deficit to 27-14 after a 3 yard TD run and conversion. After forcing a 3 and out, Tanner Dean-Lowry found Jeff Matthews for a big 38 yard TD that pulled the game within 6.

OSU got back on the board quickly, with Collier hitting William Thompson for 15 on a crucial 3rd down (I take blame, poor coverage on my part), then finding Thompson again for 21 before a 47 yard pass to James Fitzpatrick over the middle went for a touchdown after UConn defenders Anthony Watkins and Ross Sinclair both were burned in coverage.

Next, TDL strung together a nice 11 play drive, culminating in a 1 yard TD plunge from Arkeel Newsome, playing his final collegiate game, to make it a 34-28 OSU lead early in the fourth.

Collier responded on the second play from scrimmage of OSU's next drive by busting a 70 yard TD run thanks to some fantastic blocking. After a 2 point conversion to Parris Campbell Jr., OSU was staring at a 42-28 lead with 5:30 remaining.

In need of a TD late in the game, UConn got it off another one-yard TD from 'Keel, and down 7, we essentially needed a stop to stay in the game.

At the time it was easier said than done given UConn's track record of stopping OSU in the game (not very good). Despite allowing the Bucks to get inside the UConn 29, Kevin Delastonte, who connected on 3-4 on the day, pushed the field goal attempt right and gave UConn a chance.

After an incompletion, TDL found senior Jon Haden behind a pair of OSU corners and he got down to the Buckeye 29. However, with no timeouts remaining, UConn was short on time. After a 16 yard Matthews catch, UConn got inside the 13 with a minute to go.

Two plays later, faced with a 4th and 1 from the 4 and 6 seconds remaining, TDL took the snap out of the gun and rolled right. Firing off balance, he threw a perfect pass and had Matthews in the middle of the end zone for the tying TD.

                            Overtime!

The first two extra sessions resulted in quick TD's for each side. Collier needed three plays for Ohio St. to score; a 17 yard pass to the left to Fitzpatrick, a 7 yard screen to Brandon Williams and a one yard TD punch from Williams. Haden escaped coverage for UConn and was in on a 25 yard TD on the very first play to keep the game moving.

After a 14 yard catch from Matthews to set the second OT in motion, TDL decided to tuck and run on 3rd and long. Headed right, he took off, had no one in front of him, and was in for the go-ahead TD. The Bucks got Williams moving as he went up the middle for 18, got an encroachment penalty to go their way, and a three yard TD run from Williams to tie the game at 56.

Delastonte booted a field goal to make it 59-56 Buckeyes to kick off the third OT, but something terrible happened after. OSU got the ball back. We never got a possession in the third OT and the game ended after the Bucks ran the first play of what should have been our drive. We got screwed, and get tagged with the 59-56 loss*. (With this fancy asterisk).

Indeed, a very sour ending to a rough second half of a National Title defense. Wasn't quite the season we had envisioned after the phenomenal 6-0 start, but we gain more experience headed into 2019 and are looking stronger into the second year of our Big 12 membership.

With Coach Diaco set to return (barring any NCAA penalties, we are still awaiting the final verdict on the Sam Rourke investigation), maybe he can work his genius on his suddenly struggling defense. Because if the offense plays like that each time out, we'll be in good shape.

It's been a pleasure having you guys on board as we close out the fifth season of our residency in East Hartford. Let's keep rocking into season six!

I can't say I'm not happy you lost to my Buckeyes, but I can't say I don't feel bad! But hopefully next year with your full team you'll be able to compete better than this year!

That OT glitch is annoying! Had it happen to me last season too. It kind of stinks because you want to actually complete a game that goes on that long and everything, but on the other hand, if you go to 3 OTs, you probably could have done something different/better earlier in the game that would have won it in regulation.

Not a bad season by any means, but looking forward to seeing how you do with all of "your guys" on the roster next year. If the offense can keep that up and Diaco can work his magic on the defense, UConn should be back in the playoff hunt.
