Bucks president: Without arena funding, team will move to 'Las Vegas'
By Ananth Pandian | NBA writer |

The Milwaukee Bucks are a young, promising team that has a devoted fan base throughout the state of Wisconsin. However, Bucks president Peter Feigen believes that the NBA will take control and move the team out of state if the Wisconsin legislature doesn't approve $250 million in public financing to help build a new arena in downtown Milwaukee.

Originally posted by Milwaukee Business Journal
Milwaukee Bucks president Peter Feigin told Wisconsin lawmakers Monday that time was of the essence in approving $250 million in public funding for the proposed arena in downtown Milwaukee or the NBA will move the team to another city.

At an informational hearing held by the state Legislature's Joint Finance Committee, Feigin said the Bucks owners' purchase agreement for the team includes a provision that construction of a new arena start in 2015. If that does not occur, he said the NBA will buy back the team for a $25 million profit and move them to "Las Vegas or Seattle."

Feigin said the team needed to start construction by October or November to avoid the NBA starting a process of seeking buyers for the team. The team's lease at the BMO Harris Bradley Center expires in 2017, he said.

This is obviously a dramatic statement by Feigin to convince Wisconsin lawmakers to approve funding but his bold talk could have the desired effect. According to the Milwaukee Business Journal, State Sen. Alberta Darling thinks a new arena in Downtown Milwaukee is the "opportunity of a lifetime" for the city and the state.

The Bucks have been in Milwaukee since 1968 and have played in the BMO Harris Bradley Center since 1988. The need for a new arena is evident but unfortunately it is just not up to the Bucks. Owners Wes Edens, Marc Lasry and Jimie Dinan have agreed to work with former owner Herb Kohl to keep the Bucks in Milwaukee, pledging $250 million for the construction of a new arena. The remaining cost for construction is $250 million which the Bucks are looking to get from public financing.

While the future of the Bucks on the court is quite bright, their future in Milwaukee could be in doubt if the Wisconsin legislature doesn't approve funds for construction of a new arena. Scary times for Bucks fans.

No Professional Sport Makes As Much Sense For Vegas As Basketball
          By Brock Radke |

Right now, Las Vegas is closer than ever to having a professional sports team. Headlines and rumors have swirled constantly this year, with multiple developments in multiple sports fueling the fire. Findlay Sports & Entertainment is working with Mayor Carolyn Goodman and the Cordish Companies to court an MLS expansion team to play soccer in a potential new stadium in Symphony Park. How about hockey in the desert? The Maloof family is part of an ownership group working to bring an NHL expansion team to Vegas.

Of course, these kinds of efforts are nothing new. Local sports fans have heard it all before. But there’s one simple fact that’s impossible to ignore and instantly escalates standard rumors into serious consideration: We’ve got an arena. MGM Resorts and AEG are building a 20,000-seat arena, right now, right behind New York-New York, set to open in 2016.

Could that hockey team slide into that arena? Sure. The Downtown soccer thing could happen, too, but no professional sport makes as much sense in Las Vegas as basketball does. There’s no better fit than an NBA team in that MGM arena.

We are a basketball city. The sports identity of Las Vegas has traditionally been tied to boxing (and, more recently, mixed martial arts), and that whole legal sports betting thing has fashioned Vegas into a fun football destination. But the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels national championship in 1990 remains our city’s defining sports moment. The Thomas & Mack Center still buzzes from that era’s all-encompassing energy, nearly 25 years later. Tark is still God. Hoops still rules.

Hockey or soccer or anything else wouldn’t be able to capture us as easily, because our most glorious sports moment happened on the hardwood. And that’s far from the only big basketball connection. Las Vegas infamously hosted NBA All-Star Weekend in 2007 and is a frequent home for the star-studded USA Basketball Men’s National Team. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar broke the league’s all-time scoring record in 1984 during a Lakers-Jazz game at Thomas & Mack, which has also been home to the NBA Summer League since 2004.

As recently illustrated in The Sunday, high school hoops in Las Vegas have come a long way in recent years, further proving the sport is in our DNA. Four of the top prep prospects in the nation live and play here, and it sure would be cool to see them go pro one day, playing on the Strip.

Or maybe our NBA team will play at the All Net Arena, which also broke ground on the Strip this year. A planned $1.4 billion arena and hotel project adjacent to SLS, All Net is led by former UNLV and NBA basketball player Jackie Robinson, who still needs to reach a development agreement with Clark County and line up additional financing before this local sports dream becomes reality.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver’s recent New York Times editorial calling for the legalization of sports betting across the country adds an outsized straw to this camel’s back. His predecessor David Stern softened in his anti-Vegas stance over the years, but new boss Silver is decidedly pro-Vegas. Today’s NBA has a great relationship with Las Vegas—unlike the NFL, for example—with no argument against a potential pro basketball team based here.

Let’s face it: Las Vegas doesn’t need a team. The idea that one of the most exciting, unique and recognizable places in the world needs pro sports to climb into world-class status—a concept former Mayor Oscar Goodman used to repeat ad nauseam—is nuts. Anyone who buys into that hyperbole does so because he or she has a personal stake in the game.

But we still want a team. We live here and work here and grow here, and we’ve been ready for this for a long time. Las Vegas is a big-event city, and we know we can count on tourism to fill some of those seats. Yet even with that important weapon in the arsenal, support from the locals will be essential to the success of a Las Vegas pro sports franchise. Will we get behind our team? If it’s basketball, the odds are stacked higher.

Move To Vegas "Inevitable" After Disapproval of New Milwaukee Arena
By Rob Royal | Sports Writer |

After rumors and speculation of relocation surrounded the Milwaukee Bucks throughout the off-season, it is finally becoming clear. The NBA will be departing Wisconsin and heading to the city of Sin. In a second meeting between Bucks president Peter Feigen and Wisconsin lawmakers, it was announced that the state of Wisconsin would not approve public funding for a new arena in Milwaukee. "To put it simply, the cons outweighed the pros," said Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett.

The arena was expected to cost $500 million to build, with Bucks ownership contributing $150 million. Former Bucks owner Herb Kohl, an ex-United States senator, would have paid $100 million. The remaining $250 million would have been publicly funded, including up to $220 million potentially coming from the so-called “jock tax.”

The NBA released a statement shortly after.

NBA Unveils Logo and Team Name For Las Vegas' New NBA Franchise
By Rob Royal | Sports Writer |

As soon as it was announced that Las Vegas would be the home of the NBA's newest franchise, fans began to anticipate the day that more information about the team would be revealed. That day has finally come. Team officials officially announced today that the team formerly known as the Milwaukee Bucks would be known as the Las Vegas Wild Aces.

The announcement had long been anticipated, but everyone knew what was coming. "The fans had a huge say in the outcome," said team president Peter Feigin. In a poll released by the team's official website, (NBA.com/lasvegas) fans were given three choices of possible team names. They were: the Las Vegas Wild Aces, the Las Vegas Wolfpack, and the Las Vegas Kings. The Wild Aces was the fan favorite, bringing in a whopping 87% of the vote, with the Wolfpack coming in second, and the Kings finishing last.

What was revealed was a large black banner with the logo in the middle, and splashes of red at the top and silver at the bottom. Feigin said the red and black relate to the colors of playing cards. "When you play poker, you always want that Ace to show up, as it is the best card you can get. That is what we're hoping for with this team, we want to provide Las Vegas with the best team we can put forth."

Las Vegas fans have a lot to look forward to, as the former Milwaukee Bucks squad has a lot of youth and potential. Milwaukee made headlines in the off-season when free agent center Greg Monroe signed a max deal, choosing the Bucks over the likes of the Knicks, Lakers, and Trail Blazers. The 25-year-old Monroe joins a promising young nucleus in Milwaukee that features Giannis Antetokounmpo (age 20), Jabari Parker (20), Khris Middleton (23) and Michael Carter-Williams (23).

"Exciting things are ahead for Las Vegas," said head coach Jason Kidd. Team officials announced during the conference that they will be unveiling their new uniform and court designs via social media later in the week.

Patiently waiting on finalized designs of the jerseys and court.

If they stay in the East, they are already a playoff team (has that ever occurred?), so this should be interesting.

                            Following, no doubt.
