Haven't played Madden for years. Playing '16 and it controls terribly

I haven't been playing Madden for the last couple of years, primarily because I feel as if the game puts way too much priority into the animations over actual player control. Why does it feel like, every time I catch a pass, I have zero control over my receiver until he is just running straight down the field? Switching to a defender in space is a complete nightmare, since the initial second+ after you take control, he is just completely out of control. Is there some kind of Momentum setting I need to turn off/on, or is this just how Madden controls now? I stopped playing the NBA 2K games long ago because of this same problem, and while Madden is filled with things I really like, this fundamental aspect of the game just feels really bad to me.

I believe there is an assist setting for defense. I do strongly recommend to play no switch on defense and allowing the receiver to run after catch for offense. This only works if you are playing the CPU and not another human. The more human input put in makes for additional calculations and outcomes become wonky.

I always manually control the receiver when the ball is in the air, and would like to be able to do the same with defenders and play the ball. It's a video game, I don't want to watch it, I want to play it.

The EA football engine peaked with the NCAA and Madden games in 2002-2004, in my opinion. Perfect blend of realism, fun, and control.

If youre that far removed from the game, perhaps it just doesn't feel like you remember. Maybe just a learning curve coming your way.

Seems like you miss the days of players turning on a dime at full speed and skating all over the field. Momentum actually matters now.

That was my first thought as well, just didn't want to say it.

When you play with super high agility players, you can really feel the difference in responsiveness when you change directions, so maybe you can make personnel decisions based on that.

But yeah it doesn't handle the same as previous Maddens, which I think most folks on this forum like. We're more into a sim playstyle here, where player talent and schemes matter more on the field than user inputs. In Madden 16, user catching is pretty much dead, and in its place are great-looking animations between WR and DBs which was impossible with the old system.
