Bulldog Born, Bulldog Bred | A Fresno State Football Dynasty

    INTRODUCTION

    _____________________________________________

"I'm Bulldog Born, Bulldog Bred and
I'm going to be a Bulldog until the day I'm Dead."
    - former Fresno State coach Jim Sweeney

Alright guys, I'm back with my Fresno State dynasty. I stopped my original thread due to some issues with in-game stats. I was also super bummed when the capture device I purchased didn't work like I wanted it to. I've been contemplating on restarting this dynasty for the better part of a month. Now that I'm sitting here watching the Alabama/LSU game, I figured its time to get things started.

A little history about myself. I was an old MMer from back in the day under the same username. I did a couple of dynasty reports, but never quite fully finished them the way I envisioned. After the site went down, I jumped to Utopia, VSN, and DSS for awhile. I couldn't afford a PS3 for the longest time so I cooled off on the dynasty reporting. I think at around the time NCAA 14 came out is when I was able to get a hold of a PS3. I mainly played offline dynasty just to pass the time.

Fast forward to July of this year, I found myself wanting to do a dynasty report again. I've been contemplating about it ever since and eventually hunkered down, came back to OS forum, and said I'm going to get this done.

The school I'll be rolling with is Fresno State. I picked Fresno State because it's my Alma mater and I feel like if I pick a team I really root for then I'll be more inclined to continue progressing through the season. I actually shy away from playing Fresno State in any of my other dynasties because I didn't want to cheese up the team, so this is actually new for me.

The goal as with many of the other dynasty reports is to have something we could look back on a few years down the road and remember the players and games that were played. We'll see how it goes. I hope you all enjoy!

            2015 TEAM PREVIEW
            _____________________________________________
LET'S MAKE IT FOUR STRAIGHT.. Last year's rocky (6-8) campaign took the Bulldogs to their third straight Mountain West championship game appearance. There is growing optimism that this year's team could very well end up there once again. If they plan on making a fourth straight appearance, they'll have to rely heavily on a run game led by senior Marteze Waller. Waller will be the primary offensive weapon for a squad that lost their only returning receiver, Aaron Peck to a foot injury in fall camp.

A TRUE FRESHMAN.. Along with a group of young receiving corps is a new signal caller in quarterback Chason Virgil. Virgil and sophomore Zack Greenlee had a fierce competition for the starting job. In the end, Virgil's playmaking ability and 'X' factor won the coaches over. The Texas native graduated from West Mesquite High School in December and enrolled at Fresno State in the spring semester. Big things are expected of Virgil as his skill set compliments this spread offense attack.

ALL EYES ON KYRIE.. On defense, linebacker Kyrie Wilson will be a name to watch. The vocal leader of the team, Wilson has started the last two seasons at middle linebacker. Another name to watch is pass rushing specialist Ejiro Ederaine. After a down year in sacks last year, Ederaine looks to end his Fresno State career with double digit sacks.

              CHASON'S JOURNEY
              _____________________________________________

How did a kid from Dallas, TX end up in Fresno, CA? They call it a grey shirt. It's a story that happens often in the world of college football recruiting.

"To be honest, I didn't know anything about Fresno State." Virgil said.

Chason Virgil, a highly touted dual threat quarterback committed to Mississippi State early in the recruiting process. Virgil had planned to enroll early to get a leg up in spring practices.

Unfortunately for Virgil, Mississippi State had other plans.

"Yeah, my high school coach told me they wanted to grey shirt me," Virgil said. "That wasn't part of the plan at all. It caught me off guard because I'm graduating in two weeks and then I get told I won't get a scholarship until next semester."

Grey shirting is the process in which a player can participate with the football team, but is not given a scholarship until the following year which would mean Chason and his family would have to pay for school during the spring semester.

Chason decommitted from Mississippi State, but because it was late in the recruiting season many schools did not have scholarships available. That's when Fresno State came calling.

"We had heard of this kid decommitting and I pulled up some game tape," Coach DeRuyter said. "I saw some things I liked and said why not, lets give the family a call and see where it goes."

After getting in touch with Chason, the Fresno State staff met with the Virgil family and invited them to a campus visit. Chason loved his visit and the following day informed the coaching staff that he planned on committing to the Bulldogs.

In the end, everything seems to have worked out for Chason as he becomes the first true freshman quarterback to start the season for Fresno State.

"Best decision I could have made," Virgil said. "I'm a Bulldog. Not a Mississippi State Bulldog. I'm a Fresno State Bulldog."

                SCHEDULE PREVIEW
                _____________________________________________

ANYBODY, ANYWHERE, ANYTIME.. The motto left by former Fresno State coach Pat Hill. The Bulldogs have been true to form in scheduling any team in the country. This year they travel to Oxford for a match up against a high octane Ole Miss team. They last met in 2011, when Ole Miss handed Fresno State their second straight loss in a home and home series (2010/2011). Let's hope third time is the charm to pull off the upset.

THE BOY-Z ARE BACK IN TOWN.. The last two Mountain West conference champions (FS 2012, 2013, BSU 2014) meet again in Fresno on September 21. This is always a game to mark on the schedule. The BOY-Z have always been a thorn in the Bulldogs side. Expect both teams to come out and leave it all on the field.

FREQUENT FLYER MILES.. Get ready to rack up those reward points as the Bulldogs are traveling to four different time zones this year. The away trip marked on every player's calendar is the trip to Hawaii. Who says you can't have some fun while on a business trip. Coach DeRuyter will definitely plan out a weekend agenda to keep the kids on track during this week.

                  AROUND THE NATION

                  _____________________________________________

BACK TO BACK.. In this video game world, the playoffs never existed. Nonetheless, the Ohio State Buckeyes are the defending National Champions. The coaches seem to agree that they are the #1 team in the nation with 41 of the coaches vote. Let's see if they can start and finish at the #1 spot. TCU and Alabama round out the top three schools.

ALLEN HEISMAN FAVORITE.. Texas A&M's quarterback Kyle Allen is the preseason favorite to win the coveted Heisman trophy. The sophomore from Scottsdale, AZ took over the starting gig mid-way through the season and guided the Aggies to a Liberty Bowl win. Other Heisman favorites include Alabama QB Alec Morris and Ohio State WR Braxton Miller.

BOISE GOES FOR TWO.. Its no surprise, the Broncos are picked to win the Mountain West conference again. Likewise for the Bulldogs, the team was picked to finish sixth in the conference. They are predicted to finish second in their division, beaten out by San Diego State. Actually, four of the top five teams are coming out of the 'Mountain' division.

You could hear the stadium crowd roar and then a second later.. silence. After an exhausting five and a half hour game, the visiting Utah Utes escape Bulldog Stadium with a 'W'.

A dropped touchdown catch by Fresno State's Chad Olsen concludes a wild five overtime game as Fresno State falls to Utah 54-46.

"I really couldn't see what happened during the play," Fresno State coach Tim DeRuyter said. "Chad came down with the catch, I heard the crowd celebrate and then I see the game officials running in to whistle the catch incomplete."

After a lengthy review, the catch was ruled incomplete and the Utah sideline celebrated as teammates jumped on the visiting side bleachers.

The Fresno State / Utah game will go on record as the fifth longest overtime game in FBS history.

PLAYER OF THE GAME.. Utah quarterback Kendal Thompson didn't start the game for the Utes, but ended with player of the game honors. Thompson took over when starter Tyler Wilson went out midway through the first quarter. He made most of his opportunity as he exploded for an impressive stat line, 23-30, 292 Yards, 18 Carries, 69 Yards, 3 Total Touchdowns.

KEY STAT.. 100% is a good percentage to have on any stat sheet. For the Utes, they were perfect in their nine redzone opportunities. The Bulldogs kept pace with eight, but were unsuccessful in their final redzone drive.

KEY PLAY.. There are actually two game changing plays. The first was a 'what if' play at the end of regulation. Fresno State receiver Josiah Blandin dropped a long bomb that if caught would of been a walk in touchdown.

The second play is the final play of game. After failing to get in with three straight run plays, the call was a short passing play over the middle to the tight end. Olsen was able to get enough separation to catch the ball, but the defensive back was able to recover and punch the ball out before he could complete the catch.

EXTRA POINT.. Utah's backfield is hurting after a five overtime game.

Utah starting quarterback Tyler Wilson left in the first quarter with an apparent arm injury. It was later disclosed after the game that Wilson will miss the remainder of the season with a torn shoulder muscle.

The Utes starting running back Davonte Booker also did not finish the game as he left in the third quarter with a concussion.

                            _____________________________________________

Today on the Bulldog Insider we're going to examine how the Bulldog offensive line was able to generate 293 yards on the ground. The rushing attack brought back shades of the smash mouth Bulldog offense of yesteryear. Although Fresno State lost a heart breaker to Utah, the team may have found it's identity this year.

The Bulldogs run a power run game out of the shotgun formation. Against Utah, the Bulldogs were able to utilize two primary running plays to generate the yardage.

The first is the off tackle run play. Each lineman is responsible for the defender in front of them. In the diagram below, left tackle Alex Fifita will be going one on one with the defensive end. The remaining linemen will double up on the two defensive tackles. The tight ends aligned on the same side is responsible for the remaining defensive end. This provides several different gaps for running back Marteze Waller to run through.

The second play is the base or power O. As you'll see the formation remains the same, but the difference with this run play is the offensive guard instead of doubling his man, will pull to guide the running back. As the play begins, left guard Aaron Mitchell pulls out of his stance and heads to the gap between the right guard and right tackle. An interesting wrinkle happens on this play as tight end Chad Olsen is used as an H-back creating two blockers to guide running back Marteze Waller.

COACH TIM DERUYTER POST GAME THOUGHTS AFTER UTAH GAME..
We've been working all fall practice on getting more physical at the point of attack. The Utah game was a great opportunity to showcase our mix of balance between the spread 'em out quick passing game and the bruising down hill running attack.

Obviously, I'm disappointed we didn't get a win, but I'm really proud of the kids working hard on the practice field and having it show up on game day.

                            ON RUNNING SCHEME..

This year we're going to a more two tight end look from the shotgun formation. I believe it balances out the front and gives our offense a schematic advantage when diagnosing what defensive look we're going up against.

We saw some things we could attack when watching the Utah game film. I felt our coaches brought out a good game plan to neutralize their stout defensive tackles.

                              CHASING DREAMS

Marteze Waller came to the sideline after his second touchdown against Utah and hollered at coach Tim DeRuyter, "Coach, I'm hungry, feed me!"

And that's what coach DeRuyter continued to do as Waller finished last week's game with 48 carries.

"I couldn't find anything in the record book," Coach DeRuyter laughed. "But I'm sure Marteze is on top of that list."

The senior running back opened up his 2015 campaign with 48 carries for 224 yards and two touchdowns. Waller also returned a 105 yard kickoff return touchdown. In total, Waller racked up 394 all purpose yards against Utah.

Those are eye popping numbers for a running back who had several NFL scouts in attendance. If he continues at this pace, Waller may find himself joining a list of Fresno State running backs in the NFL, the most recent Ryan Mathews in 2010.

"Its been a dream since I was a kid in pop warner," Waller said. "It'll be a blessing when I hear my name called."
