Nothing Will Be Handed | #2676 | The Trials & Tribulations of Chris Graham

    (Part 1 - High School)
    Chapter 1 - #2676
    June 2015
    The Meaning Behind The Number

With Rivals.com latest expansion to their recruiting depth, the website now ranks as many as 2,700 players (including JUCO) amongst the United States. Some athletes are as fortunate to be listed in the top-100 while a handful of the elites are able to find themselves in the top-10 – others have struggled to even add a rank next to their name prior to the database expansion.

Rivals.com chief executive Brad Sayers says this not only added depth to the already major recruiting resource but it also gave many prep athletes the ability to see exactly where they stood from a national standpoint. Sayers has received a series of mixed reviews following the addition, some people happy while others... not so much.

“I would rather have been unranked than see myself at #2676 in the nation… it ain't even sugar-coded anymore, they just straight up put it out there that I'm one of the worst players in those rankings."

Defensive back Chris Graham says that ranking – #2676 – is his main motivation as he moves into his football season this year at Calhoun High School, a UIL Class AAAAA participant in the small city of Port Lavaca, Texas.

“He’s the golden child around here,” Calhoun head football coach Adam Pendleton says. “It’s not too often this city gets the chance to come out on Friday nights and watch a player of his caliber. It sounds pretty funny considering he’s only a one-star recruit but here in Lavaca that type of talent doesn’t come around too often – Graham’s a once in a decade type player for us.”

In Texas, typically the biggest recruiting state in the country, it’s no surprise that if you drive 10 miles beyond Port Lavaca the name Chris Graham becomes unheard of. The incoming high school senior receives little-to-no recognition outside the city he was bred in. At the moment he houses just one college scholarship coming from his coach's friend who just so happens to be the head coach of Texas Southern, a struggling FCS squad located just two hours away from Lavaca in Houston.

Graham’s dreams however trample the idea of playing FCS football.

“Every day I think about playing in the NFL,” he nods with confidence. “I know it sound unrealistic for a dude like me but if it’s one thing a man can always do, it is to dream. I think if I can get myself into a big FBS program that’d be the first step in the process.”

The idea is far-fetched and catches me off-guard, when I ask him of a backup plan he only defends his dream.

“It ain’t really no point of a backup plan cause all that’s ‘gon do is distract me from plan A… if I’m gonna commit myself to achieving something big then that’s gotta be the only thing on my mind.”

Graham goes on to explain his big opportunity this upcoming week when he’ll head up to Lubbock, Texas where he’ll take part in Texas Tech’s 3-day high school football camp where many of the university’s scouts will be expected in attendance.

“That’s gonna be real big for me,” he smiles. “Coach Pendleton tells me it only takes one big college coach’s interest to get your name out there. I know if I compete well at the camp it’d be a good start to my senior season cause they’ll probably keep they eyes out for me all year.”

In the meantime, Graham has been looking to improve every single day of the off-season. Along with his summer football practice, the 17-year-old has spent lots of time in the weight room and routinely attends a local football training facility every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday of the week.

“I just do it for my mom,” he says. “She the hardest worker I know, hands down. She raised me herself… Y’know? She been working over at the plant for so long – probably ever since I been alive. That's a lot of stress that no woman should ever have to go through. When I make it big one day I’m ‘gon come back and get her out of this place. Maybe move her up to San Antonio, y’know? I hear that place is real nice.”

With one of the lowest starting points possible, this story will be about Chris Graham and his trials and tribulations in route to his hopeful rise to the top. He’ll look for his heart and determination to carry him to the promise lands of some of his biggest, most daring dreams.

“Hopefully five years from now we can look back at all this and smile knowing it all started out with a number,” Chris says, “… number 2676.”

Note: This is a test run. I've had this idea running through my mind for quite a while and I was looking to see what you guys thought about it. This is ran through dynasty mode, I selected one of the worst players in the recruiting bank and decided to follow him through his career. He starts off a 44 overall. I will be using a 'skill-point' type approach regarding his skill boosts - meaning each off-season I will assign a number of attribute points in which I'll use to upgrade his skills (I will cap each skill at 10 attribute points per season). As to writing, I will either continue to use this documentary style writing or I'll just recap Graham's events such as earning a scholarship or whatever

So once again, this is a test, so I'd like to hear some feedback on whether or not you guys will be interested in this. Otherwise I'll continue to focus on my other dynasty.

                  Chapter 2 - Moving Forward
                  June - August 2015
Chris Reflects On Texas Tech Camp, Starts Senior Year at Calhoun

Last time we left off with the introduction of Port Lavaca’s ‘golden child’ Chris Graham IV as well as the mention of the upcoming Texas Tech football camp in which he’d be attending. To say the least, ‘it was a ****ty performance’ – words from Graham himself.

“I really blew it out there,” he shook his head in disgrace, “I ain’t just let myself down either… I let down my moms, Coach Pendleton, hell even you was probably disappointed with that crap I had going out there. It just sucks when you put in so much work only to see it get shattered in situations like that.”

Chris measured in the lower percentile at a physical stand point; at 5’11” and 175 pounds he performed under expectation with a forty-time just under a 4.8 and in the weight room he maxed out on the bench press at 190 pounds – the max on the day by a defensive back was 270.

When I spoke to head coach Kliff Kingsbury towards the conclusion of the camp I asked him how he felt about Graham’s performance in which he responded with not a clue of Graham’s presence at the camp. Ironically just days beforehand, Coach Pendleton had done Chris a big favor by sending Kingsbury an entire highlight film along with a summary of his success at the Calhoun football program.

So of course Chris was upset.

“I’d just like things to change, y’know… I never really stoop this low but that was three real discouraging days I went through. Makes me realize maybe the reason why I’m ranked where I am. Those recruiting dudes are professional analyst after all, right?”

I shrug, giving Chris condolence before he delivers the mere counter downfall of his big time football aspirations he spoke about just the last time we met a few days ago.

“It just makes me wonder how things would turn out if I don’t make it… where would I be? Probably still here in the Port, working at a plant – Lord knows my moms don’t want that. I don’t want that.”

Due to time constraints, the prime June and July summer months pass before I report back on Chris. Once I return he’s back in the swing of things, obviously over the TTU Camp, since then he explains that he’s been continuing his training process as only a solo week stands in the way from the Calhoun Sandcrabs’ opening season debut.

The media continues to bash the Sandcrabs’ who they’re projecting to finish in the lower half of their Region III section – therefor missing out on a UIL Playoff berth after advancing to the second round of sectionals a season ago with a final record of 6-6.

The young and graduation-depleted roster stood in desperate need of a leader which is where Graham came in, just one of the nine seniors on the roster, the all-section cornerback was named captain of the defense as he was to the entire team. Teammates appear to be fond of him.

“What I like most about Chris…? Well, probably how he don’t ever look down on nobody,” freshman cornerback Hassan Nadir says. “Coach Pendleton say I’m probably ‘gon have to start varsity this year so Chris kinda took me under his wing over the summer and taught me a lot. He’s a real good dude. I hope he makes it big one day just cause how hard he works, I think he deserves it.”

“Thing about Graham is he leaves it all out on the field," senior defensive end Tyreke Nalls claims. "I remember our freshman year he was real soft, wasn't aggressive or anything, Coach Pendelton changed him and turned dude into one of the craziest people I know – at least when game time comes around, otherwise he's real chill, he's perfect fit for team captain."

Slated sophomore starting quarterback Joshua Longley thinks of Graham as a role model. “He’s a great leader because he’s there for everybody, even when they mess up… when I get the chance to lead this team one day I’m going to try to be just like Graham.”

Much of the weight of Calhoun’s football season lies on the shoulders of Chris Graham and despite the seemingly impossible odds, sure enough he declares a trip up to state at the NRG Stadium as his main goal of the season.

“We coming in with high expectations for ourselves,” he says, “it’s no different from any other year, we wanna win state. This city deserves something big like that… for real. We just gotta take things one step at a time, we’ll get there.”

For now, Chris shifts his gears back to his school curriculum after Calhoun County ISD opened their doors for the first time since May. The high school populates just over 1,000 students and Chris is the most recognized senior as he walks through the halls with a smile, dapping fists and shaking hands with both the upper and underclassmen.

This year he’s looking to step up his game in the classrooms.

“I think I had a 2.6-2.7 GPA last year… it wasn’t good but considering all the stuff I’d been going through, it was actually kinda decent… but at the same time, Coach Pendleton tells me all about how I’mma have to be able to handle all that stuff in college – it ain’t no excuses – he says they just won’t play you if you slacking in class. So I gotta do good this year just to let the colleges know I’m serious about continuing my career, y’know.”

The next time I’ll see Chris is this Friday when Calhoun hits the road two hours north to Somerset High where they’ll face off against the Bulldogs who they defeated by the score of 60-41 a year ago. It's sought of to be a different story this season with a large mass of Somerset’s roster returning following their 8-3 campaign.

sorry for the long post but that'll set me up to advance into the games, which I'm still debating on how I want to present. I'm think either a written play-by-play or just a recap highlighting Graham. Any thoughts?

                    * and btw, all high school games will be made up

I'd think a few key plays and a summary of Grahams performance would be more appropriate than a play by play.

                          August 2015
Chris Plays First Game Of The Season Against Somerset

Somerset out-populates Port Lavaca's football team by at least 40 bodies – they also happen to be much larger in the physical charts. Before the game Chris catches me up with the continuation and preparation of the season at Calhoun. With the role of being a leader to the underclassman-loaded roster, he admits it’s been tough.

“I’m just remaining optimistic,” he says. “It’s probably a lot of teams out there that’s more talented than us but I try to tell everybody not worry bout that. What we need to focus on this year is improving and learning as a team… it’s my job to make sure we do that.”

Somerset enters this game following a 24-14 scrimmage win over cellar-dweller South San Antonio last week. Calhoun on the other hand is simply looking for win #1 on the road under the Friday night lights of a packed Bulldog Stadium.

Due to the two hour drive, it isn’t much of a surprise that the visitors’ side of the stadium is nearly empty. There is however one special visitor and its Carla Graham, mother of Chris.

He has told me in the past that she’s rarely ever able to make it to his games due to her work schedule so when she does show up it usually means a lot to him… She sports a big smile as she watches her son put out his leadership skills early on, mentoring his teammates through warm-ups before kickoff.

“He’s the best son I could ask for,” she says. “He’s real humble… he’s the type of kid who’d give the clothes off his back if he saw someone who needed them more. And he loves this football thing.” She smiled. “I thought it was real dangerous at first but he just got better and better every time he played. Now he wants to make the NFL, I tell him to keep chasing his dream… I know he can do it.”

The game clock hits zero and Somerset wins the tossup in which they elect to receive. Calhoun’s head man Adam Pendleton brings out his kickoff team, a personnel group Chris takes part in as the designated gunner. This is where he winds up making his first tackle of the season, stopping the returner in his tracks at the nineteen yard line.

He heads off the field where he gets a quick sip of water before returning back to action as the leader of the defense. Somerset, a passing attack, comes out in the pistol which leads to a play action call that the entire Calhoun defense bites on – including Chris. The first play of the game is a 51 yard reception.

Even with a helmet on, it’s not hard to see Chris’s agony.

He puts the play behind and gathers his team in the huddle before they matchup for the next possession. This time around Chris is accounted for a pass breakup in assistance to freshman cornerback Hassan Nasir, who was responsible for letting up the previous big gain.

Somerset however continues to go to the pass and their drive is effectively ended with a five-yard touchdown reception that puts the first points on the board.

Later on down the line, Chris begins to separate himself from the other defensive backs out on the field for both teams. He showcases a mere level of elite athleticism and uses it to force himself into the mix of many plays… he finds himself free in the backfield multiple times before the half, resulting in two tackles for a loss on his part.

Still, Somerset manages to enter the third quarter up, 14-10. Chris sets up outside the end zone to receive his third kickoff return of the night, he fields this one at the eight yard line and takes it for an additional fourteen yards before being dragged down by multiple defenders.

Calhoun’s option offense begins clicking and they succeed at moving the ball deep down the field in bunches, resulting in a touchdown to take over the lead at 17-14. The Sandcrabs defense comes out, looking to carry over the momentum and that’s exactly what they do in a drive fulfilled with multiple incompletions and botched runs – this one ended with a punt.

Coach Pendleton looked to catch the Bulldog defense off-guard as he signaled for sophomore quarterback Joshua Longley to air it up, something he’d done only four other times this game. Longley’s ball got at least forty yards of hang time before it landed in the wrong set of hands, resulting in a twenty yard interception return … thus prompting another Somerset score that put them back up, 20-17.

Fast-forward to the fourth quarter and the Sandcrabs were still trapped in the same 20-17 deficit but this time there was just four minutes remaining. Somerset’s quarterback lined up in the pistol on third down with two yards to go on the 18 yard line… Chris set himself up behind his linebackers with the team seemingly set up to bring the blitz on the run.

It was another play action… a play action that fooled nobody.

Chris stepped back as he adjusted into coverage just as a tight end embarked on his dig route behind the defensive line. The quarterback read the defense quickly and went to the scramble only to see a lineman busting through the gates, he scurried back and rushed a pass off his back foot to the standing-still tight end that Chris had been fully covering.

It was an easy swat, a near interception, Chris’s third of the night.

Fourth down arose for Somerset and they decided to bring out the same kicker that had managed to miss a PAT in the third quarter, this time he was up for a 35 yard field goal… and he made it straight through the uprights. The Sandcrabs took possession with just over three minutes remaining in the pivotal 23-17 match.

Time was however not on their side, they ended up falling in one of the many Texas high school football openers.
