Tried playing SIM. Gotta go back to cheese

After watching Czar, SamPham, 2K TV, tutorials, 2KU and practicing my offense I'm giving up on trying to play SIM.

I enjoy playing against others. Either MyTeam (currently 5th seed in RTTP) or Play Now Online (16-32 record). I love running plays, and freelance offenses. I study them and follow the court diagrams and I run them often.

Then I get matched with my opponent who has the exact opposite style of play. No picks, no plays, no sets, no rolls, no screens, etc. But this type of play style is often more successful than mine.

I slow down, they speed up. I work for open shots, they turbo to open lay ups/dunks. I shoot with feet planted, they shoot on the move. I pass 3 - 5 times, they alley-oop once. I walk it up, they baseball pass it up.

So I decided to change my play style. To not call plays, to not play sim, to run n gun. To my surprise I started winning or loosing by 1 or 2pts only. So in order to maintain my sanity and not break my TV and keep my marriage healthy and my kids from learning cuss words I shall cheese (whoa sorry...) - I shall change my play style going forward.

    Who's with me?

I wouldn't say I wasn't with you. But I basically stop being nice. I've switched to the Hawks. And I'm finally stuck in college league. Just need to win 8 games to get to development league.

But I think you have to mix it up. There times to run a play. And then there are times to run. You just have to be perfect with the balance. Because what I've notice when your playing someone who runs and guns. They work way harder to get an open look. And they are running by the seat of the their pants. Whie someone who actually knows his weakness an strength of his team. Knows what his players are going to be. One the best things to do to someone who is running every possession. Is to slow the ball down and call plays. I've done it so many times.

But sometimes when I slow to call plays they will double team me as soon as I cross half court. Then my player will either throw the pass into the stands, bump the ball of a leg and turn it over or it will be a jump/held ball or a back court violation.

Playing online, depending on your opponent you really do have to abandon your "sim" game plan sometimes. I definitely see where the OP is coming from with this

Then again, this is why I don't play online whatsoever anymore.

So what are you doing defensively? Your offense sounds fine to me.

Started playing off ball. Began to work on my stick skills. Moved to on ball defense. Switch to big man to defend pick and roll.

I was doing well with on ball D. Then patch 3 came out...

Lol it's all about mixing it up. I'm surprised you haven't been grilled yet haha. Cheese is far superior. Sim ball is just code for capping/limiting yourself. Online you gotta do what works, that involves knowing your team and playing to its strengths. If you can turbo for buckets do it, but you'll also need to find open shooters eventually and knockdown some shots. 2K has a well documented habit of keepin games close unless your opponent is straight trash and hardly knows the controls. That momentum bs can give you a 15 point lead in the first quarter and later comeback to give you a 8 point deficit in the 3rd.

NEVER EVER EVER run a play to use the branches, that's silly basketball. You run plays to use the extra motion and unique spacing. If you are following branches to the tee, and hoping they will get you an open shot, that's not Sim that's inefficient.

Think of it this way you are running a 3-2 extended freelance as your base HOWEVER you are getting doubled a lot. What do you do ? Not switching your freelance and trying to PASS out of the doubles is the wrong answer. 3-2 spacing doesn't allow for smart passes out of double. Then of course you will say well Sam Pham I can't switch to pace motion freelance fast enough when the double comes. To that degree you are correct, you can't but what you can do is quickly call a horns play or 4-1 PnR play so you get the type of spacing and motion you need to destroy doubles.

You don't run plays to RUN them, you read the defense every possession and apply the correct play within the correct base freelance. Playing 2K just to run plays and do extra passes isn't the right approach.

Read the D, read your opponent's defensive tendencies, understand your roster's strengths. Combine all those information then use a combination of plays and freelances that maximizes your chances of success within that data set. No sim No cheese, just superior tactics vs inferior tactics. Sorry for the rant, but that's what you have to do. Is not as simple from switching over from "SIM" to "cheese", essentially what you are really doing is going from playing slow and over reliant on plays to playing fast and loose.

Your original "sim" strategy isn't optimal hence why you lost more, your new "cheese" strategy will work well against many average users online so you will win more. But you haven't really improved as a 2K player either way; I am not knocking you, if you watch me you know I am always happy to help. I am giving you the advice you need to become a better player so you will not only win, you will feel like you IMPROVED.

From your original post, it sounds like you understand you haven't necessarily improved even tho you are winning more. Ignore sim and cheese ask yourself if you have optimized your tactics, if you haven't then there's more work to be done. Which to me is the best part of 2k, there's really no level cap or ceiling in how good you can become. Don't just play to win man, play to improve and the wins will come, and those type of wins feel the best.

Re: Tried playing SIM. Gotta go back to cheese

^^This a thousand times over. At the end of the day Sim is an ideology. It's a philosophy of playing the game, but it's slowly but surely dying because 2K are making their game more balanced year after year. Old school coaches like Bryon Scott want his team AFAIK to take a lot of mid range jump shots, which are the most inefficient shots in the game. Old school pundits might frown at the number of 3pters the Rockets and Warriors take but the corner 3 is the most efficient jumpshot in the NBA, and they might insist that players like DeAndre Jordan need to post up more, but the game has sped up to a point where posting up isn't as important anymore. The same applies to 2K. You should be basing your strategy on what works, not whether it perfectly replicates the NBA.

This is the only way competition will thrive in this game. People need to learn to defend everything in this game so that people won't be able to keep going back to their money plays, they'll actually have to start to think about their play and run their offense smarter, maybe even have to learn how to properly isolate and breakdown defenders when the game is tight.

Im with you sim is for playing cpu when you play online you have to play your opponent. I cheese cause its about winning and getting rewards. I also do things to annoy opponents like if im up, rune the clock, feed the post and draw fouls. I get cursed out alot but people quit alot too. People dont like cheesers cause they want to win simple and plan.

Try adding some "flash pausing." I can't do it like I used to be able to because you have to wait a couple seconds between pauses. When you make a good play, pause really quick to let that big play sink in to your opponent. They'll want quick revenge and often will unravel by playing too fast etc.

Whenever I try to play "cheese" I end up getting punched in the mouth because that's not my game. I like to slow the game down and work down low in the post or run high pick and rolls.

Don't get it twisted though. I'm not gonna sit back and let someone try to play me like I'm some scrub. If you're cheesing me and playing like a punk I'll have no problem running a zone or letting the CPU guard you.

I had some clown Blazers user running this stupid play where his off ball player would cut to the rim and somehow end up underneath the basket every play. He did it every single possession and had the nerve to pause the game every time he scored so I just went into a 2-3 zone and the punk couldn't score anymore.
