    GAME PREVIEW

Last Meeting at Venue: On November 6, 1976, the Tulane Green Wave fell to West Virginia 32-28 at the Louisiana Superdome. The loss for Tulane dropped their record to 2-7 in a very forgettable 2-9 season.

West Virginia is looking like a very balanced team, no glaring weaknesses. A few stud freshmen it appears too on the d-line and at LB, maybe you can exploit their youth and generally freshman have poor awareness in the game. Run at 'em and then hit 'em with Ryan Jean deep on play action!

Reporter: Coach DGZ, is there a sex scandal in your program?
Coach DGZ: Sex scandal? What sex scandal? I can't monitor what young people do with their free time when they're not with the coaches.
Reporter: Would you call such a practice keeping up with the LSUs and Alabamas of the world?
Coach DGZ: Well, IF there was anything like that going on, one could justify it as keeping up with the SEC.

Coach DGZ (allegedly!) banging Erin Andrews and having a cadre of hoes as part of his recruiting pitch! I am not worthy!!! Good stuff!!!

Yeah I think the game plan for this one will be very similar to the SEC championship game.

You're right though, boy is that team loaded. They will be a force to be reckoned with here in the next couple of years with all these young guys - they had the #3 rated recruiting class this off-season and it shows. Maybe we'll see these guys again sometime down the road.

I am definitely going to try to exploit the play-action game in this one, especially against that very slow-looking SS of theirs; if I can get him singled up on Jean, watch out!

          Haha, thanks...

See this is where having those old, "Part I" links would come in handy.

The hoes for recruiting article ties directly into the early years of this dynasty. I actually did highlight recruits being wooed by females on the original dynasty and actually did have "interoffice memos" detailing which girls to send with which recruits.

I'm sure 98% of the followers of this dynasty 5 years ago don't remember that. Heck, even I had forgot about it, but one of Cheese's first posts in this thread jogged my memory:

So I decided to tie it all in to the storyline (and also create a retroactive, storybook excuse for why I sucked so bad this year in recruiting and why my recruiting class will be so terrible ). There will also be some future tie-ins a little later on.

Sorry for my lack of activity my good friend. I hope all is well. Lots of updates so of course I have lots of feedback!

Jean had an incredible season but can't really fault the Heisman committee. I mean a perfect season like that from a quarterback. I can honestly say i have never seen anything like that in all my years.

I like your chances against West Virginia. They look solid but i am not seeing anything overly special on paper. Stick to the ground and pound and that should open up space down the field for Jean.!

Absolutely love that I am in some way got to contribute to the storyline, by bringing up the recruiters! Ah yes i remember the interoffice memos, luckily some database errors may have destroyed any paper trail the NCAA could have followed. Let's just hope the annonymous tippier isn't Brandi. I think i am remembering that name correctly....

No problem Cheese...I know we all get extremely busy sometimes (hence the delay in me playing this Sugar Bowl). Hope you did well on your exams!

In a way, I am kind of happy Jean didn't win the Heisman as a freshman, seems a tad unrealistic.

I sure hope you're right about West Virginia. Lately, it seems like team ratings don't matter. But you're right, if we can pound the rock like we did against Florida, we should get this W.

Haha, yes!!! Forgot all about Brandi. She was one of our main hostesses if I recall correctly. She snagged us many a recruit back in the day.

Those database errors you speak of may POSSIBLY be going away soon. I literally have just gotten in touch with one of the old site masters at Digital Sports Lounge a little while ago and he is trying to pull some strings. We'll see how it goes!

Tulane | QB Williams to sit out finale
                Thu, 2 Jan 2020 7:14:07 -0700

                report courtesy Britt McHenry, ESPN.com

Britt McHenry of ESPN.com reports that Tulane head coach D. Geezy indicated to her at the team hotel in the indoor pool that redshirt freshman QB Jimmy Williams (86 overall), still hindered by a torn pectoral injury he suffered in week 2, will not dress for Saturday night's Sugar Bowl contest versus West Virginia despite being listed on the injury report as "probable."

"We thought about perhaps making him the backup for this one but in the end decided we'd rather play it safe," said Geezy.

"Yes this is the final game, but the last time we allowed him to play, coming in off the bench versus Arkansas in week 10, he suffered a setback. We'd rather make sure that thing is fully healed and that he will be ready for spring practice."

As expected, redshirt senior QB Preston Fields (81 overall), will start in the season finale, as he has since week 3; furthermore, junior QB Antoine Atkinson (74 overall) will serve as the team's backup quarterback versus West Virginia.

Tulane | Team wearing green helmets
                Thu, 2 Jan 2020 8:17:05 -0700
Tammy Nunez of the New Orleans Times Picayune reports that Tulane will sport its alternate green helmets in Saturday night's Sugar Bowl contest versus West Virginia. The team will also wear white jerseys and green pants. Usually reserved for rivalry opponents, the team decided to buck the trend and wear its green helmets for their bowl contest.

"We just decided to switch things up a little," said head coach D. Geezy.

"We haven't worn green helmets with white uniforms at the Superdome since the 2011 season, the year before we made the switch to white helmets being our primary helmet. I want our team to embrace that this isn't a typical home game for us and us wearing something non-traditional will highlight that."

Along with its traditional blue helmets, West Virginia will wear its gold jerseys and blue pants.

Tulane | Superdome road game for Tulane?
                Thu, 2 Jan 2020 9:25:21 -0700
Tammy Nunez of the New Orleans Times Picayune reports that despite Tulane playing Saturday night's Sugar Bowl on its home turf at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, the NCAA has placed several restrictions on the school in an effort to level the playing field, including officially naming Tulane the "visiting team" for the game.

The team has been mandated to spend the past week at a New Orleans hotel and has not been allowed to practice at their on-campus practice facility. Instead, the team has had to bus daily to Archbishop Shaw High School, head coach D. Geezy's high school alma mater, to practice. The team will also stand on the visiting team's sideline, come out of the visiting team tunnel, and use the visiting team's locker room for the game.

"We last played in the Sugar Bowl in 2015 versus Virginia Tech and none of these restrictions were in place but I'm just like 'whatever'," said Geezy.

"It is understandable though. Needless to say, we have been pretty dominant in the dome and with this being a bowl game, things should be more neutral. I told the team that we'll need a extreme level of focus for this one because the confines won't be quite as friendly. We are expecting about 40% of the crowd to be for West Virginia, so it'll be a little different than our usual Superdome game."

Game 14, Year 10 (2019 season): #8 Tulane vs. West Virginia | Sugar Bowl

                  #8 28 -- 12-2
                  NR 17 -- 9-3

TOP ROW: Redshirt senior QB Preston Fields completes a 77-yard touchdown pass to superstar freshman WR Ryan Jean that cut the Green Wave's deficit to 17-14 with 8:09 remaining. | BOTTOM ROW: The pair would hook up again one possession later, this time from 76 yards away, which gave Tulane its first lead of the game at 21-17 with 5:59 to go in the contest.

                  NOT IN OUR HOUSE

After a dreadful start, fourth quarter scoring surge ignites Tulane to a 28-17 Sugar Bowl victory | QB Fields, WR Jean wake up in the fourth quarter, connect for two long touchdown passes as Green Wave erases 17-6 deficit to extend Superdome winning streak to 39 | BCS Bowl victory gives Wave much-needed momentum heading into critical off-season

New Orleans, LA -- For the third time this season, the Tulane Green Wave found themselves either tied or trailing in the fourth quarter at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, and for the third time this season they made just enough plays to overcome their struggles and win. The Green Wave, after looking mediocre for 3+ quarters and facing a 17-6 deficit, scored 22 unanswered fourth quarter points en route to a 28-17 Sugar Bowl victory over West Virginia Saturday night in New Orleans. Redshirt senior QB Preston Fields and true freshman WR Ryan Jean, this season's Heisman trophy runner-up, hooked up for touchdown scores of 77 yards and 76 yards in the game's final quarter to help Tulane win on their home Superdome turf for the 39th straight time.

West Virginia (9-3) got off to a dreadful start. The Mountaineers lost starting QB Rob Wood (84 ovr) when he was hit while making an option pitch, causing him to strain his pectoral muscle. The redshirt junior signal caller would be replaced by 5th year senior QB Leroy Taylor (77 ovr), and the team's first possession would end when a bizarre 63-yard field goal attempt by PK Jerome Hooper fell woefully short.

West Virginia true freshman RB Jonathan Larson slashed his way through the Tulane defense for 117 yards and 2 touchdowns, including this 50-yard score that gave his team a 7-0 first quarter lead.
"Not sure what they were trying to prove there," said Tulane head coach D. Geezy.

"We thought maybe they were setting up for some sort of fake or something, but once their kicker's foot touched that ball, all I could say was 'What in the world?!'".

Despite their awkward start to the game, West Virginia amassed a 17-6 lead behind the legs of true freshman RB Jonathan Larson, a 4-star recruit this past off-season. Larson's 50-yard touchdown run on the Mountaineers' second possession of the evening came on 4th and inches and gave his team an early 7-0 lead.

The Middletown, Pennsylvania native would score again in the third quarter, this time from 10 yards out, increasing his team's lead to 14-6 in the second half. Larson finished the night with 16 carries for 117 yards, including the two scores. He also led his team with 5 receptions, which went for 31 yards.

After allowing a late third quarter field goal that increased the Green Wave's deficit to 17-6, Geezy made an adjustment. Struggling to move the football with his ground-and-pound game plan, the 10th year head coach decided to open things up with the vertical passing game, and it paid dividends.

Backed up at their own 5-yard line early in the fourth quarter following a good West Virginia punt, Fields led a 5-play 95-yard drive which took all of 0:32 to execute. His aforementioned 77-yard hookup with Jean cut the Mountaineer lead 17-12, and his ensuing two-point conversion pass to fellow senior WR Bobby McCall made the score 17-14 with 8:09 remaining.

"We came out in shotgun and they showed blitz with man press on the outside," said Geezy.

"We had the perfect play call and Jean easily beat his man (West Virginia senior CB Kellen King) off the line of scrimmage and Fields found him for an easy pitch-and-catch touchdown."

Redshirt senior QB Preston Fields, playing in his final collegiate game, celebrates his 76-yard go-ahead touchdown completion to freshman WR Ryan Jean with just 5:59 remaining in the game.

West Virginia would move the football on their next drive to midfield, however a big third down stop by Wave senior MLB David Reid just inches shy of the first down marker would force a Mountaineer punt.

On the second play of Tulane's ensuing possession, lightning would strike twice, as Jean easily beat King (87 ovr) off the line again and Fields found him streaking wide open down the same sideline from their first scoring hookup. The star freshman would catch the perfect pass and take it the distance before diving into the end zone for an emphatic 76-yard score that gave his team their first lead of the game at 21-17. The blue chip recruit from Eunice, Louisiana finished the night with 7 receptions for 225 yards, including his two touchdowns.

Fields went into the fourth quarter having completed just 10 of his 24 pass attempts for 122 yards with no touchdowns and 2 interceptions. However in the final period, the 5th year senior went out with a bang in his final game, going 5 of 10 for 204 yards with 2 touchdowns to close out the night.

After taking the lead, the Tulane defense got to work. Taylor struggled versus the Green Wave pass rush most of the game and was sacked 4 times. Wave sophomore CB Marcus Jackson's second sack of the game came on 3rd and 15 at the West Virginia 48-yard line with 3:49 remaining and the Mountaineers were forced to punt down by four points.

"They struggled versus our CAT corner blitzes all day," said Tulane senior defensive assistant Steve Ellis.

"Coach (Charles) Kelly and I called the cornerback blitz play 'Field Chicago 3-Buck' probably 12 f***ing times in this one. They had some youngsters on their line and we knew they'd have problems handling that. They weren't ready for that sh*t. They don't know nothing about that."

Junior RB Bernie Davis was bottled up for most of the game, but his 64-yard game-clinching touchdown with just 1:46 remaining put him over 100 yards for the contest and gave his team a 28-17 lead.

Tulane (12-2) would convert a critical 3rd and 17 when Fields found junior TE Roger Battle for a 23-yard first down gain which moved the ball to the Green Wave 36-yard line with 2:20 to go. One play later, RB Bernie Davis would finally break loose after struggling mightily most of the game and scored on a 64-yard run which increased his team's lead to 28-17 with just 1:46 remaining. Davis finished the game with 118 yards on 21 carries.

To close out the game, Wave senior DT Quentin Foster got a third down sack, his second sack of the game, on West Virginia's final possession. And on fourth down, sophomore FS Lee Palmer intercepted Taylor's desperation heave at the Tulane 48-yard line. Davis' 10-yard second down run gave his team a first down on its next drive, allowing the Wave to run out the clock and put the finishing touches on yet another close victory to end the year.

"This game was really a microcosm of our entire season," said Geezy.

"We played in so many close games this year and our guys stepped up so many times in these situations.

"Yes we fell short of our ultimate goal, but we'll never turn our nose up on winning an SEC Championship and finishing the year out with a BCS bowl victory. I am very proud of the group."

Notes: Tulane's victory was their 39th straight victory at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, including two Sugar Bowl contests, their first coming at the conclusion of the 2015 season in a 38-21 win over Virginia Tech...West Virginia star WR Michael Johnson, facing man on man coverage by Jackson most of the evening, did not record a single reception during the game. The 6-5 212-pound redshirt senior had caught at least 3 passes in every game this season and had an average of 5.2 receptions and 1 touchdown per game heading into the contest...The win by Tulane improved Geezy's record in bowl games to 6-3. His six bowl game wins are the most by any Green Wave coach in the school's history.

Great comeback to beat the Mountaineers and finish in the top 10! You're right, any season with a conference title and major bowl win has to be considered a success. Especially when you throw in that your planned starting QB only played a handful of games. Also, Ryan Jean obviously cannot be stopped. He might not even be human to be that good that young. Here's hoping he continues the rise and isn't a Marcus Dupree or involved in the alleged recruiting scandal or anything.

Just peeking at your roster and reading your hints about struggling in recruiting, Bernie Davis might be your most important player going forward with you "getting back to basics" and pounding the run game. Doesn't appear to be much depth behind him with two seniors graduating.

Looks like most of your defense is returning, so hopefully some improvement will be happening on that side of the ball.

Man this is some excellent feedback, really appreciate the response.

I am happy to report that Ryan Jean is clean and absolved of any wrongdoing.

He will be the face of the team for the next 2-3 seasons.

I agree with you on Davis. Huge year coming up here for him. We will be relying on him heavily because you're right, our RB depth stinks. Heck, so does our WR depth. If either he or Jean go down, it'll be some long Saturdays next season, at least on offense.

I think next season will definitely be the year of the defense. We will have guys rated in the high 80s and low 90s littered throughout our entire defensive depth chart. I am going to be putting an added emphasis on my own personal focus on that side of the ball this upcoming season. I must admit, I haven't been putting a whole lot of thought into my play-calling on defense.

Ol' Coach Geezy needs to become more well-rounded and not just an offensive guy. I need to be more focused on defense, and that also involves playing better "complimentary football" offensively, through the running game. We have already seen the beginning stages of that transformation here in these last two games.

Bombshell...How's this for some rare college football scoopage from yours truly - Tulane defensive coordinator/recruiting coordinator Charles Kelly is out, and the team will promote Steve Ellis, who stood in for Kelly during his bounty suspension, to the full-time coordinator position (cont'd)

Kelly was fired with cause after it was discovered that it was he that tipped off TMZ regarding the story two months ago involving Geezy and my friend and colleague, Erin Andrews TMZ Story link here (cont'd)

In addition to this, Geezy and the Tulane administration were unhappy with the team's defensive play in the latter part of the year and were extremely miffed about the bounty scandal Kelly implemented and decided to make the move. Likewise, Kelly was extremely miffed about being the fall guy for the scandal (cont'd)

Look for Geezy to take on more oversight of the defensive side of the ball and I also hear Tulane is not done making changes...Glazer out!
