Yikes, quite the shake up. Love the off the field stories. Looking forward to see how this impacts the defensive adjustments, not to mention recruiting. Are you manually recruiting or setting up the CPU to do it for you?

      Thanks for checking in Matt!

I am manually recruiting, and not very well I must say. I've struggled all year long, it's like I forgot how to recruit on this game or something. It's so bad that I've had no choice but to write it into the story line.

Glad you're enjoying the off-the-field drama, and yes, as promised, it will all have on-the-field ramifications. Still more to come....stay tuned!

Thanks for checking in brother...It definitely adds a lot to the fun factor, being able to recruit in cities I am familiar with and play my games in a building I am also familiar with. Tulane and Deegeezy have been a perfect NCAA marriage. Easily my favorite dynasty I have ever done.

Kelly (LEFT) is out, Ellis (RIGHT) is in

Tulane | Geezy opens up on Kelly firing, Ellis hiring
                Wed, 22 Jan 2020 9:25:01 -0700

                report courtesy Britt McHenry, ESPN.com

In an exclusive interview with ESPN reporter Britt McHenry, Tulane head coach D. Geezy indicated that, in agreement with a report by Fox Sports reporter Jay Glazer, the team decided to move on from defensive coordinator Charles Kelly following a miriade of off-the-field issues, but the main reason for his dismissal was the team's abysmal defensive performance last season. The team finished ranked 117th in the country in total defense, their worst ranking ever under Geezy's tenure.

Kelly was hired after Geezy's first season in New Orleans, being named the defensive coordinator following the 2010 season. The two men worked together, along with new Tulane defensive coordinator Steve Ellis, at I-AA Nicholls St. University several years before Geezy's arrival at Tulane. Kelly was the Colonels' defensive coordinator, while Ellis served as their linebackers coach and Geezy served as their defensive backs coach.

"This was probably the hardest decision I had to make since I got here 10 years ago, because Charles was and hopefully one day will again be a friend and he really was the guy that ushered me into this whole coaching business," said Geezy.

"But the team just did not produce this season and we felt it was time to move on with Coach Ellis."

Geezy indicates that Ellis, who served as the team's defensive coordinator during Kelly's 7-game suspension this past season, will move away from Kelly's "Multiple D" play style and will primarily run a 4-3 as the team's base defense in an effort to simplify their strategy.

"I think we struggled last year with the complexities of the system and we played much better when Ellis was calling the plays early in the year and with the playbook shrunk," said Geezy.

"He is a very aggressive defensive coach and really likes bringing pressure, especially from the secondary. I think you will see a totally different style of D."

Though now primarily an offensive coach, Geezy also indicated to McHenry during the interview that he himself will take on more oversight of the defensive side of the ball next season and place a stronger emphasis on his involvement with the defensive staff and its weekly game-planning.

Former Green Wave QB Anthony High versus Florida in 2015

Tulane | QB Williams changes to no. 15
                Wed, 22 Jan 2020 03:16:00 -0700
Tammy Nunez of the New Orleans Times Picayune reports that Tulane QB Jimmy Williams has switched from #8 to #15, which is the number he wore in high school.

"The number wasn't available when I got here; I tried to get it from (former Tulane FB) Marcus (Young) but he said it meant a lot to him so I left it alone," said Williams.

"I was a huge fan of Tim Tebow as a young boy and was an even bigger fan of (former Tulane QB) Anthony High 5 seasons ago. To be honest, I model a lot of my game after Anthony's and he was a big reason I chose to come to Tulane. So I decided to make the switch, and coming off the disappointing year I had, this jersey change sort of marks a new beginning for me."

High played one season as Tulane's full-time starting quarterback in 2015 and finished the year with 3,266 passing yards to go along with 31 touchdowns. He led the Green Wave to their first SEC Championship since their return to the conference in 2014 and, under his leadership, the team won its first ever BCS Bowl, a 38-21 victory over Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl.

Tulane | Spurrier Sr. and Spurrier Jr. spotted on campus?
                Wed, 22 Jan 2020 7:14:07 -0700
Tammy Nunez of the New Orleans Times Picayune reports that retired South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier and his son, current Gamecocks receivers coach Steve Spurrier Jr. were seen on Tulane's campus this week. The school had no comment on the matter when contacted by the Times Picayune however sources did confirm that head coach D. Geezy's job is in no way in any danger.

                ___________________________

                Editor's Note:

The hiring of new defensive coordinator Steve Ellis will be manifested via a defensive playbook change from "Multiple D" to "4-3." Coach Geezy "taking on more oversight of the defensive side of the ball" will be manifested simply by me being more focused and calculated with my user play-calling on D and maybe spending a bit more time in practice mode on defense heading into games. Typically, I only practice with the offense in practice mode; that will change moving forward.

I am finally all caught up after my forced hiatus due to studying and the like. Very nice win over West Virginia and a bit of of a storybook ending for Fields.

As matt was pointing out the offense is looking pretty thin outside of a few key skill players (Jean, Williams and Davis) so it will be interesting to see how the recruiting turns out. My expectations are pretty low with all the off the field turmoil going on. Sad to see Kelly go, but not that unexpected. I will be curious to see the other recruiting fallout that happens. I like to respond to your storylines as if you have no control over these things

Seems like Britt is getting all the inside pool...i mean interview time these days. What happened to the one and only Erin?!

Recovering those memos is still a work in progress haha. God I'd love to have them back; I miss reading that old report.

Great to hear from you cheese. Man you just vanished! I was starting to worry if you had called it quits. haha

I think the best way to describe the team this year will be "top heavy." Our starting lineup is going to be one of the most talented bunches I have ever had, the depth is razor thin though. If we stay healthy, this could be a great season. If the injury bug hits again like it did last season, we may not even achieve double digit wins.

I do have control over things and in some cases I don't. The "recruiting fallout" will be dictated how bad I DON'T suck with off-season recruiting, if that makes sense.

Coach Geezy and Erin had to go on a brief hiatus and lay low for awhile; or maybe they're just being much more careful.

TULANE HIRES SPURRIER JR. AS OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR
Geezy will remain team's play-caller on game days, however Spurrier Jr. will be responsible for game-planning, implementing new offense | Son of legendary head coach will also replace Kelly as team's recruiting coordinator | Geezy: It's time to adapt

By Tammy Nunez, Tulane beat reporter for Nola.com

The Tulane Green Wave announced Saturday night that South Carolina Gamecocks receivers coach Steve Spurrier Jr. will be named the team's new offensive coordinator under head coach D. Geezy. Spurrier, the son of legendary head coach Steve Spurrier, will not be the team's play-caller on game days, however he will be responsible for the team's weekly game plans moving forward and will fully install a new offense. Geezy will maintain play-calling duties.

"In football, you don't get better by staying the same, and we decided to go ahead and evolve this offense," said Geezy.

"The offensive system Steve uses is very, very similar to the one we ran here, with just a few added wrinkles. The new offense has a lot more predication on getting the ball out quicker, which in effect, will help us alleviate the pass rush.

That said, we will still emphasize the run heavily, as we did towards the end of last season. We will sort of be meshing two systems together, with a lot of the passing game concepts coming from Steve."

Geezy indicated that the decision to bring on Spurrier came during a meeting with both the younger and older Spurrier last week.

"We had his father come in to go over some stuff on the wetboard in regards to pass protection, and his son surprisingly came along," said Geezy.

"He ended up really hitting it off with myself and our staff and since he wasn't under contract yet with South Carolina, we ended up talking it over with the administration and making an offer. I've always envied the South Carolina playbook from afar and really took a liking to it the year we played them in the SEC Championship Game back in 2016."

Spurrier will be the first coach of Geezy's tenure that will hold the title of "offensive coordinator." The younger Spurrier will also be the team's recruiting coordinator, a title he held with the Gamecocks and a post once held by now-fired Tulane defensive coordinator Charles Kelly.

The move will also take some of the offensive weight off Geezy's shoulders and allow him to put more personal focus on the defensive side of the ball.

"Don't get me wrong, I will still be the guy with the play-sheet on game days, but to have someone like Steve to help install our game plans will help me oversee things in other areas. I think that what happened last year with the bounty stuff and with our overall play on the defensive side of the ball indicates that, as a head coach, I need to be more involved with the team as a whole."

                        Editor's Note:

This staffing change will be manifested by changing my team's playbook from "Syracuse" to "South Carolina." Also, Spurrier's "weekly game-planning" responsibility will be manifested by me now using "Ask Coach" for play-calling on offense. I will however have total control to veto "Ask Coach" at any time. Basically, it will be as if Spurrier Jr. creates my offensive play-call sheet for me on game days.

Spurrier being named "recruiting coordinator" will be manifested by me changing all my coaching philosophy play call sliders to that of South Carolina's and using "recruiting board assistance." I will create the initial board, and will handle all calls, however adding/removing players to and from the board will now be handled by the CPU, a.k.a. "Spurrier."

Tulane | Wave docked 9 scholarships just days before Signing Day

                          report courtesy Gene Wojciechowski, ESPN.com

The NCAA dropped the hammer on Tulane on Saturday as according to Gene Wojciechowski of ESPN, updating a previous report, the Green Wave will be penalized a total of 9 scholarships this fall due to what the NCAA described as the "systematic use of females and sex to recruit new players to Tulane during the 2010 through 2013 seasons."

According to Wojciechowski's report, the NCAA was unable to track down several documents, including interoffice memos, as proof of the practice, however several witnesses, including 3 unnamed former players and 4 of the females involved, came forward.

The loss of scholarships means that the Green Wave roster will have only 61 scholarship players, as opposed to 70, leaving the team very thin depth-wise.

"A lot of people would say it is a major step down, going from Tulane to Florida State, however I am happy to be here now where I feel wanted and like I belong."

Re: Coach Geezy in the Big Easy: Our City, Our Team | Part II - The Golden Age of Tul

To be honest, the recruiting class wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be (maybe extended time recruiting as Eastern Michigan has colored me wrong...). It is very top heavy with a huge drop off after about the first 3-5 guys. However if you add in the transfer and a few developmental guys in the middle of the pack you could still pull some good talent out of this group. It looks like four star Powers is a bit of a bust as a runner, looks more like a third down/receiving back. Anyone projecting as a starter? Sad to see you lose out on Townsend.

Loved the offseason articles, and I am really looking forward to seeing how the new look South Carolina-esque offense plays out. Interesting spin and implementation of a recruiting person, should add a bit of an uncontrollable exciting aspect to your recruiting.

And of course, you know I loved the shout out to Reggie Moore. I still remember when you signed him. The legend.
