NHL 16 Through the Eyes of a Noob

I have never played hockey in my life.

When I first picked up the controller to play NHL 16, it was a nerve-racking experience. I am a sports buff who follows everything from football to golf and from baseball to soccer, but the NHL? It was a foreign concept to me. So imagine my surprise when I played my first game and had an absolute blast.

It's refreshing on here to see someone wanting to have fun in a video game and not complain that the assist stats over ten years are not realistic or the arena is missing one set of lighting.

Too often people forget to relax and have fun.

I enjoyed last years NHL for all its faults I am waiting for a price drop in England to pick this up

I've learned that the sports I follow the least (NHL, NBA) are the games I have the most fun!
      PS3, we had a good run! (7/18/09-10/5/14)

i've been playing this series for years and still have fun with it. Sure I hear the complaints from the hardcore gamers and hockey fanatics, but this is the best pickup and play sports title for the last 5 years. And the game plays fast. So you can finish a game in about 15-20 min time.

I have to say I couldn't agree more. I've played this game for years. I still wouldn't call myself one of the hardcore gamers, but I'm by far a noob. That being said I can't count how many times iI've had friends come over and play a game with me and its been a blast for everyone. Most of them that have played have never watched a hockey game in their lives. But they still catch on pretty fast and have a blast playing it. My brother, who said "why would I play this? I HATE hockey" took some convincing to play a game finally played and then left my house to go to the store and pick up a copy of the game. He liked it that much.

I'm a noob when it comes to Hockey games too. The last time I played a hockey before I played last year NHL game was Blades of Steel. And I'm now playing NHL 16 and having fun it too.

              I too enjoy NHL 16.
However this reads like an EA sponsored write up similar to the one on FIFA 16 a few days ago. Slightly worrying!

It reads as EA sponsored because it's positive? I mean there were positive articles on a number of games last week (including PES and NBA 2K, two VASTLY non-EA properties, the latter article focusing on 2K's MyTeam) but these seem EA Sponsored?

I ask that you read through all of the articles before making an unfounded claim such as this.

This statement is very telling and actually may be spot on. My two favorite sports are Hockey and football and I find those are the two games I complain the most about. If your not a die hard fan and not noticing the little things missing or wrong the game would seem excellent.

This is a great write up and shows the other side. I think EA tries to find a balance to keep all happy and as a result misses things that only us long time hockey fans notice. I just wish EA would spend extra time on their difficulty settings and sliders like MLB the Show. You can make that game play like an arcade game, somewhere in between, or a true baseball sim. That game nails every aspect......then again I'm not a huge baseball fan so perhaps I'm proving my point.....Hmmmm

I'm playing NHL 16 as my first real hockey game in over 15 years, otherwise I'm in the exact same situation. If Madden has the wrong font for the yard markers, I will notice. If NBA 2K has "Knicks Arena" instead of MSG, I notice it.

But NHL? I don't really notice, and I have no idea what the "slot" is, but I'm just having a blast.

A few years ago I picked up EA Rugby (I forget what year honestly) for $5 and NONE of my friends knew what we were doing, so we all had a good time and no one took it seriously.

                      Same here (NBA, Soccer).

I think that's because I know so little about those sports I'm ignorant to what I should be angry about, haha.

                        good article,
only if you are a noob to hockey, the game is fun. you dont see anything wrong with that?
have you ever heard of the statement "ignorance is bliss". that is what you are describing.
question becomes, what happens when you become more knowledgeable about said sport?

so is the game a sim or is it more arcade?
I still play hockey games every once in a while.
                        NHL 14 and NHL2k10.

                          Hi Chris,

Care to post your slider set?

As a diehard hockey fan the game is near unplayable to me and the commentary is terrible. But I do know what you mean because I feel this way about the Fifa series, I never watch Soccer but I do love to play the games so authenticity/realism matters very little to me as long as it it is fun.

Completely off topic, but if you're not too fussed about authenticity, do give PES 2016 a try. I own both FIFA and PES titles for this year and PES plays fantastically.
