Yeah this was definitely a let down. I was looking forward to using this guy all over the field but he looks like a bust at this point. I will still give him opportunities though but with him being a junior JUCO transfer, there isn't a whole lot of time for growth.

I knew I was getting something special in Richards. His ratings were off the charts on the scouting reports. He'll obviously start from day 1 and will be an every down player. 3-4 OLB, 4-3 OLB, nickle LB, and dime DE.

Thanks man...This class really has a bunch of fun-looking players. I am especially excited to use Anthony ""Highsman.""

A lot of exciting players within this class. I even think the 4-star wide receiver could turn out to be a decent contributer. You look poised for a big season and the future is looking very promising as well.
Yeah Anthony ""Highsman's"" ratings are off the charts as far as versatility. I didn't mention this on the recruiting report but he also has 79 KPW and 76 KAC. I've never seen such a good all-around player like this.

He'll be used sort of like a Kordell Stewart his first couple of years and will be our starting QB in two years once Curtis Byrd leaves. I plan to get High snaps at QB (primarily QB running plays, options, etc), and at WR. I may even get him a wildcat snap or two.

I agree on Hopkins, the ""4-star"" WR. He'll be my kick and punt returner and I will also try to get him snaps at WR for deep plays and on a couple of Jet Sweeps per game.

Thanks man...I am mostly concerned with my offensive line and secondary. But with the speed we have on offense, we should always be in every game.

                  20 -- 0-1

TOP: Tulane struck early when QB Curtis Byrd scored on an 11-yard run on the game's opening possession to give the Green Wave a 7-0 lead. BOTTOM: Later in the first quarter, Byrd connects with a wide open Orleans Darkwa out of the backfield and the senior running back breaks a tackle and takes it 64 yards to the house to make the score 17-0.

FIRST HALF SCORING SURGE BY GREEN WAVE GROUNDS AIR FORCE IN 41-20 OPENING DAY ROUT

QB Byrd accounts for 310 total yards and 3 touchdowns as Tulane gets out of the gates with a 'W' | Freshman OLB Richards registers a team-high 10 tackles in debut | Green Wave set to host Kentucky in rematch of last year's double overtime thriller in Liberty Bowl

Colorado Springs, CO -- The Tulane Green Wave stormed out to a 38-7 halftime lead and in the end held on for a 41-20 opening day win over Air Force Saturday at Colorado Springs in what was both teams' season opener. Green Wave QB Curtis Byrd's junior season got off to a solid start as he went 10 of 21 for 282 yards and 2 touchdowns. The third year starter also contributed 8 rushes for 29 yards, including an 11-yard touchdown carry to conclude the game's opening drive.

Green Wave RB Orleans Darkwa also had a great afternoon, carrying the ball 10 times for 57 yards and a touchdown. The senior also added a team-high 3 receptions for 68 yards, including a 64-yard first quarter touchdown reception.

The Tulane defense had a strong outing, led by freshman OLB Mark Richards, who posted 10 tackles in his first game with the Green Wave.

Senior OLB Kerchal Byrd's 27-yard interception return for a touchdown in the second quarter all but sealed the deal early, as it put his team up 31-0.

Air Force (0-1) would outscore the Green Wave 20-3 in the second half behind the running of RB Adam Pino, who finished with 137 yards and a touchdown. But in the end, the large early deficit was far too much to overome.

Tulane (1-0) will host Kentucky (1-0) next weekend at the Louisiana Superdome. The two teams played a 52-46 double-overtime thriller in last season's Liberty Bowl. The game was won on a 91-yard interception return for a touchdown by then-Tulane senior CB Ryan Travis on the game's final play.

Thanks man...I think I am at the point now where if an opponent is rated similar or below me, I expect to win.

The thing about college football though is that you can blow a team out one week and get blown out by another the following week. It'll be interesting to see how we do against a much better Kentucky team.

Thanks! We have a ton of weapons at the skill positions. It's a challenge trying to get everyone touches but I guess that's a good problem to have.

Agreed...Granted a good portion of it is simply me making better decisions, but in this first game he didn't have one of his signature, ""miss the wideo open receiver and throw the ball directly to the safety"" moments.

Yeah I also tried to get him a couple of receptions but both passes got batted down at the LOS. He had one nice 12-yard first down carry but his rushing stats got skewed because he took a big sack at one point in the game. He'll have much better days than this.

It looks like Mark Richards is the real deal. It was very noticeable when playing that he was in on a majority of the tackles. He was all over the place out there.

Thanks man...Hopefully this game is less of a nail-biter than my last game against them in last season's Liberty Bowl.

And if I can go back to that ESPN WR recruit who came in lowly rated

His AWR and CTH held back his overall....and I bet he had D CTH when you recruited him correct? He's fast but he's got Braylon Edwards hands lol...but that's realistic IMO because there's a ton of receivers like that

I know I'm in the minority on this but that's one aspect I love about the recruits this year, the unpredictability of it all.....I try to stay away from the receivers with CTH under a C rating...anything under that and their OVR takes a nice hit
Yeah typically I also don't waste my time going after receivers who have a CTH rating less than C-. Hopkins indeed had a D- CTH rating if I recall correctly. I guess I was just so enamored with the prospect of finally getting a 4-star that I completely ignored it, holding out hope that maybe his CTH rating would be higher than originally advertised. Obviously, I was wrong.

He can still be a threat though due to his speed. His has looked pretty good on kickoff returns and I bet he'll break one or two over the course of this season, not to mention the vertical threat he presents.

I like the fact that there are busts though. It is realistic... Besides, why on Earth would a 4-star ESPNU recruit sign with Tulane and not be heavily recruited by bigger programs? Probably one that is deemed overrated by scouts and coaches.

We've knocked the ball out of the park on OLB Mark Richards though....All I have to say is WOW.

After stopping Tulane on their first possession of the second half, Kentucky marched right down the field on a long drive that culminated with this 7-yard touchdown pass from Wildcats QB Ryan Phillipi to WR Jameel Gordon that made the score 28-7, taking the wind out of the sails of the Green Wave in the process.

TULANE TAKES SEVERAL STEPS BACKWARDS IN 41-7 BLOWOUT HOME LOSS TO KENTUCKY

Redzone fumbles, inability to stop Wildcats' passing game dooms Green Wave as Kentucky avenges last season's double overtime defeat in Liberty Bowl | Blowout loss the worst of Geezy's tenure at Tulane | Team looks to rebound in CUSA opener at SMU following an early season BYE

New Orleans, LA -- In a surprising blowout, the Tulane Green Wave fell to the Kentucky Wildcats 41-7 Saturday at the Louisiana Superdome. Wildcats QB Ryan Phillipi carved up the Green Wave secondary to the tune of 379 yards and 4 touchdown passes. The senior signal caller had two receivers go over one hundred yards - WR Jerry Frank led the team with 7 receptions for 194 yards & a touchdown and WR Jameel Gordon had 7 grabs for 141 yards and 2 scores - consistently torching the young Green Wave secondary.

A critical sequence just before halftime quickly turned the tide in what was looking to be another close battle similar to the one the two teams played in last season's snowy Liberty Bowl which was won 52-46 by Tulane in double overtime via an interception return for a touchdown on the game's final play.

Trailing 14-7 with under a minute to go until halftime, Tulane's offense marched down the field all the way into the Kentucky red zone. However a first down carry by Green Wave freshman RB Anthony Barnett resulted in a fumble which was recovered by Kentucky OLB Tim Patterson, giving the Wildcats the ball at their own 18-yard line.

Kentucky (2-0) would quickly convert the turnover into points. On the very next play following the turnover, Phillipi hit Frank on a 55-yard pass completion that got the ball all the way to the Tulane 27-yard line. Three plays later, Phillipi would hit Frank again, this time for a 16-yard touchdown that made the score 21-7 with just 0:08 to go in the half.

"That was without a doubt the turning point of today's game," said Tulane head coach D. Geezy.

"You could just feel the air deflate out of the dome and we seemingly never recovered."

The game would quickly spiral out of control in the second half. After failing to move the ball on the opening possession of the second half, Tulane would allow another long Kentucky drive, this time ending with a touchdown passes from Phillipi to Gordon.

The Green Wave would put together another drive on its next possession, but yet again a fumble in the red zone - this time by QB Curtis Byrd - was recovered by the Wildcats DT Mister Cobble to thrwart the possession.

Once again, Kentucky would turn around and cash it in, this time with another Phillipi to Frank connection from 24 yards away to all but put the game away at 35-7 with 2:45 left in the third quarter.

Byrd, who at halftime was a stellar 14 of 14 for 137 yards and a touchdown, finished 16 of 22 for 173 yards in the game. The third year starter struggled versus the Wildcats' pass rush in the second half and was sacked 3 times, all by Kentucky DT Kent Vaughn. But it was his third quarter fumble, along with Barnett's two in the game, that stuck in the mind of Geezy.

"The bottom line is that this is a results-oriented business and we expect our ball carriers to hold onto the ball and not put it on the carpet," said Geezy.

"I don't want to make any emotional statements here until our staff has a chance to evaluate the film but I do know this; Players that continue to put the ball on the ground will be watching the game next to me on the sideline.

"With that said, it would be unfair to pin this loss on a single player or two or three players."

Saturday's 34-point loss was the Green Wave's worst under Geezy. The previous largest point deficit in a loss was 21, when the team lost to Ole Miss 31-10 in Geezy's first season (2010) and also in a 45-24 loss to SMU in his second year (2011).

"This was a team loss starting with the head coach all the way down to the last guy on the scout team roster," said Geezy.

"We have to game plan better and players have to execute better moving forward. We'll take this as a learning experience that hopefully humbles us and in turn helps us prepare better. We cannot take any opponent lightly."

Tulane (1-1) will go on the road to face SMU (0-2) next week following a BYE in what will be both teams' Conference USA opener. The Green Wave, the defending Conference USA Champions, defeated the Mustangs 45-20 last season at the Louisiana Superdome but as mentioned before, was beaten 45-24 in their last trip to University Park, Texas in 2011.

SMU was blown out 49-7 on the road by #3 Oklahoma (2-0) in week 1 of this season and fell to Baylor (2-1) 24-14 this week at home.

Yeah me either. The game just spiraled out of control quickly.

I'm not really surprised about the pass D. It was probably my main concern coming into this year along with the offensive line. Our highest rated corner is a 70. We have guys in the low to mid 60s on the field. I may have to shuffle things up though.

With that said, I was not expected to be getting blown out like that at this stage of the dynasty. The one positive - At least I now know that the game hasn't gotten too easy for me. I was getting worried there with last season's 12-2 record.

I wouldn't call any game easy. We're the favorite and if we click on all cylinders we should run away with it. But SMU has got the fire power to never truly be out of any game. I am a bit concerned about my very young and weak secondary going against their passing arsenal.

It should be a good game though.

TULANE BLOWS 17-POINT HALFTIME LEAD, FALLS TO SMU 29-24

Trailing 24-7 at the break, Mustangs take advantage of turnovers by Green Wave QB Byrd to reel off 22 unanswered points and win CUSA opener | Junior signal caller responsible for all five of his team's turnovers on the day, including four interceptions as team drops first conference game since October of 2011 | Defending Conference USA champions to host Houston next week in what is suddenly a must-win game

University Park, TX -- The Tulane Green Wave stormed out to a big lead but in the end, critical errors cost them a victory as they fell 29-24 to SMU on Saturday in Texas. Mustangs QB Stephen Kaiser's 1-yard touchdown pass to WR Chayse Joubert put their team ahead for the first time in the game with just 3:39 remaining after trailing by 17 points at halftime. Kaiser finished the game 38 of 53 for 488 yards and 2 touchdowns, running the Mustangs' run-and-shoot offense near-flawlessly in the second half after the slow start.

Tulane led at halftime 24-7 and seemed to be cruising to their 12th straight conference win. QB Curtis Byrd threw two first half touchdown passes, including a 78-yarder to big-play WR John Lacey that made the score 21-7 in the second quarter. The offensive output would come to a halt in the second half however.

Byrd would go on to throw three 2nd half interceptions and also had a critical fumble early in the fourth quarter. Nursing a 24-17 lead, Byrd was sacked by Mustangs FS Terry Anderson & MLB John Banks recovered and returned the ball 21 yards for a touchdown to make the score 24-23 however the extra point failed.

Following Byrd's third interception of the day, this one thrown to OLB John Bordano, SMU would get the ball back and go on a long 12-play 67-yard game-winning drive which culminated with the hook-up from Kaiser to Joubert.

"This was a heart-breaker tonight and our mistakes cost us," said Tulane head coach D. Geezy.

"We have too many veterans on this team for us to be making the mistakes we're making. This is two poor outings in a row. Five turnovers is simply inexcusable for our offense and where we're at in terms of developing players in this system."

Tulane would not be able to muster any offense following the lead change. Byrd's final interception, which was thrown to Anderson, ended the Green Wave's hopes with 1:57 remaining. Byrd finished the game with a whopping five turnovers credited to him (4 interceptions, 1 fumble).

The Mustangs would convert two first downs and go on to run out the remainder of the clock.

The lone offensive bright spot for Tulane was the play of senior RB Orleans Darkwa, who finished the game with 139 yards on 14 carries, including a 17-yard touchdown run to conclude the opening possession of the game.

SMU's pass heavy offense gave the Green Wave fits all day as their struggling secondary continued its woes. The Mustangs (1-2, 1-0) had two receivers go over 100 yards - Ricky Collins finished with a game-high 11 receptions for 181 yards and 1 touchdown, Kaiser finished with 9 receptions for 102 yards and the game-winning score.

"Without question we are going to look closely at the film and evaluate our roster and our lineup and all of our packages," said Geezy.

"I see that we are reeling, quite honestly on both sides of the ball. We have to do a better job of getting our playmakers making plays and we need to make sure we have our best 11 men in at all times on both sides of the ball, regardless of age or experience.

"This thing needs to get turned around and in a hurry."

Tulane (1-2, 0-1) will look to rebound next week when they host Houston (3-0, 1-0) at the Louisiana Superdome.

But seriously, what the **** is going on? I know SMU's offense can be hard to stop, but they have little to no defense at all.
Our offense seems to be sputtering man. I don't know what's going on. Byrd's turnovers really killed us (not the first time I have said that).

When I look closely at our team, I think the biggest problems are up front on the offensive line and in the secondary on defense.

The bottom line is, this is looking like a rebuilding year.

                              QB Anthony High

Tulane | Freshman A. High to start at QB
                              Tue, 24 Sep 2013 8:11:49 -0700
Tammy Nunez of the New Orleans Times Picayune reports that in a stunning move, Tulane head coach D. Geezy has benched junior QB Curtis Byrd (71 overall) and will insert true freshman QB Anthony High (70 overall) into the starting lineup for their game Saturday at home versus Houston (3-0). High, a 3-star recruit from Texas that has drawn comparisons to former Florida Gator QB Tim Tebow, has seen action in all three of Tulane's games this year, at both quarterback and at wide receiver.

Through three games, the first year player with 4.48 speed (87), has gone 2 of 5 for 43 yards passing, has carried the ball 4 times for 5 yards, and has 3 receptions for 19 yards. For now though, his focus will now turn strictly to the quarterback position.

"We really need to get things going on that side of the ball and after evaluating the game film and the practice tape each day, myself and our staff has decided that Anthony gives us the best chance to win," said Geezy.

"He will bring another element to our offense in terms of more speed to the position and we also think he is ready to do a good job in decision making. I said after the game that we would do whatever we had to do to get the best players on the field and no one was above that. I think Anthony gives us the best chance to win and we're looking for a spark."

Byrd, who has started from day one as a freshman in 2011, has had trouble with turnovers throughout his career with Tulane and is coming off a disappointing 5 turnover performance in last week's 29-24 loss to SMU, just one week after the offense was held to just one score in a 41-7 blowout loss to Kentucky. Through three games, Byrd is 43 of 71 for 712 yards with 5 touchdown passes and 4 interceptions along with 2 fumbles.

Alexander, 6-2 222 pounds, is a 3-star prospect from Pecos, Texas that runs a 4.46 40 yard dash. Yeah it tore me up making this move knowing how much time I had devoted to bringing up Byrd but in the end, his non-user error mistakes were killing me. High is by far the better player though due to the fact that he basically has the same rating as Byrd despite only being a freshman. Plus I am itching to use his 87 speed. Just using him at practice mode, I can tell it will be a major difference both in terms of buying time to make passes and also in breaking off long runs.

You're right...Big weekend for recruiting. I wanted to get most of these guys in before the CPU gets a chance to, especially the 4-star guys. I think I have a good shot to get the RB (2nd place behind Southern Miss -160) and WR (1st place) but probably not the FS .

I don't know man...Hopefully this new QB can spark us. I'm sure they'll be some mistakes, but I would rather have a freshman out there making them than continuing to roll with Byrd's inconsistency.

I think the sky is the limit with High, while Byrd continues to make the same mistakes over and over. Byrd has been good but he has also been bad. The consistency has just never been there. Time for the fans to start buying High jerseys. Can't wait to see how he does. I am sure he will have growing pains, all freshman do, but I think he is definitely the much better leader for your program. Good luck, can't wait to see the results!
Glad to see that you liked the move. It was disappointing to do but I am just no longer happy with Byrd's progress, or lack there of. The ceiling is so much higher for High (no pun intended).

There will be a lot of head-scratching throws where the ball just won't go where I want it to go, but I would much rather be making those mistakes with a freshman than with a junior. The biggest factor in my decision is the fact that High is a 70 as a freshman and Byrd is a 71 as a junior. There is a lot more room for High to grow and why waste time when this guy is clearly going to be the better player

Same here man....There is definitely a noticeable difference between a QB with 82 speed (Byrd) and one with 87 speed (High). This will give me a lot more time to work in the pocket and escape blitzers. .
