Sorry man...It's been a rough year for the Green Wave. At this point, even becoming bowl eligible is looking like it could be a challenge.

You're right. That was my game plan going in however the tempo of the game dictated otherwise. The # of pass attempts is a little bit skewed because of that frantic fourth quarter so actually, I think I did a pretty decent job of calling the game offensively the way I had in mind.

We really need the RBs and OL to step up down the stretch here though. I'm ""over"" Byrd but he's really my only logical option at this point.

      Carpenter

Tulane | 4-star WR Carpenter commits
      Tue, 29 Oct 2013 8:11:49 -0700
Tammy Nunez of the New Orleans Times Picayune reports that the Tulane Green Wave have received a commitment from their second 4-star wide receiver in the past two seasons and their second 4-star prospect of the current season, WR Brennan Carpenter (5-11 187 pounds, Louisiana, 4.52 40, #20 WR prospect). Carpenter, from Oakdale, Louisiana, is the nation's #20 wide receiver prospect and the #1 wide receiver prospect in the state of Louisiana. He visited Tulane's campus back in week 6 during the team's 41-27 win versus Houston.

Carpenter joins RB Reggie Moore, the #1 running back in the state of Louisiana, as the Green Wave's second 4-star commitment of the off-season and will also join JUCO transfer WR Daniel Hopkins, a 4-star signee for Tulane a season ago.

"We haven't dominated in terms of number of signings this year but there is no question that we have done well in terms of quality," said Tulane head coach D. Geezy.

"For us to be signing some of the best players in our state is a significant step for our program."

No way man, Tulane fans are in heaven right now. We're actually winning games and are playing competetive football every week, a far cry from what we're used to in New Orleans!

Actually, I thought this would be a down year. My OL and DBs are awful and it shows every week.

We are however losing games I thought we should win.

I agree man. Byrd is just an enigma. Hopefully we get more of good-Byrd and less of the bad-Byrd the rest of the way.

Yeah I have already started to work my way through the non-recruited guys. Unfortunately, most times that means that they suck.

At this stage, I try to just snatch up the fastest guys available, especially at CB and LB, for special teams.

That is one positive to take from this season...Kicking LSU's *** for the best players available. Their recruiting class will out-rank mine, but I sense of changing of the guard coming slowly but surely.

Beating them at the end of the year would be a hell of a way to redeem this stinker of a season.

        seriously Geezy, :wtf:
He's just roster-filler. I'm thin on bodies at that position and just needed a guy. He had C ratings across the board so I figure at worst, he'll end up an average player for the rotation.

Thanks man. Sadly, this is true. We can still turn this around though and we're not out of the Conference USA race just yet!

        Most def.

I cannot wait to see what his ratings look like. I plan to make him the focal point of the offense next season. High and Reggie along with the beast linebacker Mark Richards will be the faces of this team the next several years.

          38 -- 5-4 (4-2)
          31 -- 1-9 (1-5)

TOP: Tulane senior CB Kendrick Washington intercepts an off-balance throw by Rice QB Taylor McHargue and returns it 38 yards for a touchdown, making the score 21-7 in the second quarter. BOTTOM: With the score tied 31-31, Tulane RB Orleans Darkwa bursts into the secondary for the game-winning 23-yard touchdown that made the score 38-31 with 5:51 remaining. On the play, Darkwa squared up and burned former Green Wave FS Devon Walker (#18), who transferred from Tulane to Rice following head coach D. Geezy's first season with Tulane.

DARKWA'S FOURTH QUARTER GAME-WINNING TOUCHDOWN CAPS OFF BRILLIANT PERFORMANCE AS TULANE GETS BACK ON TRACK WITH 38-31 WIN OVER RICE

Senior running back accounts for 245 yards from scrimmage and 3 rushing touchdowns as Green Wave snaps two-game skid | QB Byrd throws for 299 yards and a touchdown, does not turn the ball over | Green Wave will host Tulsa next week at the Louisiana Superdome in what amounts to a Conference USA Western Division championship game

Houston, TX -- The Tulane Green Wave led 24-7 at halftime and fended off a late Rice rally to prevail with a 38-31 victory Saturday afternoon in rainy Houston. Tulane RB Orleans Darkwa's 23-yard touchdown run with 5:51 remaining gave the Green Wave its 38-31 winning margin and capped off one of the best performances of his career. The senior running back and Doak Walker Award semi-finalist carried the ball 26 times for 150 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also added a team-high 6 receptions for 95 yards, giving him 245 yards from scrimmage on the day.

Rice (1-9, 1-5) would get an opportunity to go on a game-tying drive but went 3 and out on their ensuing possession and were forced to punt with under five minutes remaining. It would be the last time they have the football.

The Green Wave got the ball back and went on an 11-play 60-yard drive which ate up the game's final 4:42. The pivotal play on the drive came on 4th and 6 from the Rice' 42-yard line with 2:14 to play and the Owls down to two timeouts. Green Wave QB Curtis Byrd found Darkwa out of the backfield on an angle route matched up one-on-one with Rice MLB Donald Barnes. The former 3-star linebacker prospect from Texas that was once recruited by Tulane head coach D. Geezy was no match for Darkwa's speed and was burned for a 25-yard completion, giving Tulane a first down at the Rice 17-yard line.

On the very next play, Darkwa converted another first down on the ground with a 10-yard carry, forcing Rice to exhaust their final timeout and in effect, allowing Tulane to run out the clock on kneel-downs.

"We really did not want to give them the ball back in that situation and we figured that being at the 42-yard line, it was too far for a field goal and too short to punt," said Geezy.

"They were showing us a lot of man concepts throughout the game and we dialed up a play where we thought we could get our best player matched up one-on-one against a slower linebacker. The play call worked to perfection and Darkwa made a hell of a play on fourth down."

Tulane (5-4, 4-2) will host Tulsa (6-4, 5-2) next week at the Louisiana Superdome. The Green Wave blew out the Golden Hurricane 41-13 last season on the road, one season after winning a 29-28 thriller at the Superdome on a 32-yard field goal as time expired.

The winner of next week's game will clinch a spot in the Conference USA Championship Game.

Notes: Tulane starting junior CB Kyle Davis (70 overall) left the game in the fourth quarter due to a broken rib injury and will miss the remainder of the 2013 season, further depleting the team's already thin secondary. Geezy indicated that senior Cameron DeJean (76 overall), who is a four-year starter at strong safety, will likely be moved permanently into the role of starting cornerback to take Davis' place. DeJean had been playing the nickle back and dime back role for the Green Wave for the past several games with freshman Brant Gilbert (70 overall) subbing in at strong safety in those situations. Davis leads Tulane with 4 interceptions this season.

Rice is no pushover. For whatever reason, they seem to give me fits with their aggressive no-huddle offense.

I am playing the Tulsa game tonight...The tone of the season can change very quickly with a win here!

We definitely have a thing for making games dramatic. It would be nice to win some games more comfortably but these close ones are always fun to play and also write about.

Good call though! (see next post)

Unquestionably one of the more frustrating players I have ever had in all my years of playing NCAA. One week he looks great, the next week he's throwing passes past wide open receivers and into the hands of DBs while also fumbling 2 or 3 times.

He's led us to some big wins during his stay though so I have to give him credit for that.

              27 -- 6-5 (5-3)
              40 -- 6-4 (5-2)

Tulane RB Orleans Darkwa caps off a 9-yard run with a triumphant dive into the end zone, extending his team's lead to 34-14 late in the third quarter. Darkwa, a senior playing in his final game at the Louisiana Superdome, finished the day with 178 yards and 3 touchdowns on a career-high 39 carries.

TULANE CRUISES PAST TULSA FOR A 40-27 VICTORY, CLINCHES THEIR SECOND CONSECUTIVE CONFERENCE USA WESTERN DIVISION TITLE

Senior RB Orleans Darkwa's 178 yards and 3 touchdowns paces Green Wave to pivotal win on Senior Day | Despite overall disappointing season, last season's Conference USA Champions will get the opportunity to defend their crown in conference championship game in three weeks | Team will travel to Hattiesburgh next week to face rival Southern Miss with a chance to knock Golden Eagles out of Conference USA contention

New Orleans, LA -- The Tulane Green Wave defeating the Tulsa Golden Hurricane 40-27 Saturday at the Louisiana Superdome, winning what was a de facto Conference USA Western Division championship game. By virtue of their win, the Green Wave clinched their second straight division title and the team will take on either Southern Miss or Marshall in three weeks in the Conference USA Championship Game.

Green Wave senior RB Orleans Darkwa, who like all Tulane seniors was playing in the final home game of his career, finished the day with 178 yards and 3 touchdowns on a whopping 39 carries, a career-high. Darkwa's 9-yard third quarter scoring burst made the score 34-14 and all but put the game away.

Led by QB Curtis Byrd, the Green Wave offense put together another strong performance, finishing with 492 yards of total offense on the day and perhaps most importantly, 0 turnovers. Byrd finished the game 18 of 28 for 294 yards, including a 9-yard touchdown pass to WR Brent Comardelle to conclude the game's opening drive.

"Offensively we knew coming in that if we played efficiently, limited penalties, and didn't turn the ball over, we'd win," said Tulane head coach D. Geezy.

"Hats off to Orleans for stepping up the way he did today in his final appearance here at the Superdome and also to Curtis for the way he has performed for two straight games. We're headed back in the right direction and despite our struggles this season, we'll have a shot to win our conference again."

Tulsa (6-5, 5-3) was able to stay in the game via strong passing performances from both of their quarterbacks, Shavodrick Beaver and Lucas Devilliers. Playing in Tulsa's two-quarterback system, the seniors combined for 346 passing yards and 3 touchdowns. Junior RB Ja'Terian Douglas also contributed to the no-huddle spread passing attack, throwing a 95-yard second quarter touchdown pass on a trick play out of the Wildcat formation to WR Freeman Kelly which gave the Golden Hurricane their first and only lead of the game at 14-13.

In the end though, the Tulane defense was able to get crucial stops on third down and their offense controlled the ball for 2/3 of the game, keeping the vaunted Tulsa passing attack off the field. Green Wave sophomore FS Will Washington led the defense with 14 tackles and freshman OLB Mark Richards registered his Conference USA leading 9th sack of the year during the contest.

Tulane (6-4, 5-2) will travel to Hattiesburg next week to face rival Southern Miss (8-2, 6-1) on the road. It will be the two rivals' first meeting since 2010, a 42-35 Southern Miss victory at the Louisiana Superdome.

The Golden Eagles are tied with Marshall with a 6-1 conference record (the Thundering Herd holds the tie-breaker due to their 26-18 home win over Southern Miss in week 10). A loss for the Golden Eagles would eliminate them from conference contention and set up a rematch between Tulane and Marshall in the Conference USA Championship Game.

The Thundering Herd defeated the Green Wave 30-27 in overtime back in week 9 of this season.

Notes: Tulane lost sophomore reserve CB Andrew Adams for the remainder of the season in the third quarter of Saturday's game due to an abdominal tear. Adams was primarily a special teams player and played sparingly on defense. He is the second defensive back to be lost for the year in the past two weeks, joining starting CB Kyle Davis (ribs).

Thanks man...Unfortunately with 4 losses already and being in Conference USA, the chances of his winning the Heisman are slim to none.

The Doak Walker and Walter Camp Awards are within reach though. This player has delivered week-in and week-out.

Thanks man...It's been a tough year but thankfully we still have something to play for even in a down season.

TOP: Tulane QB Curtis Byrd connects with TE Joel Bowers for his first touchdown pass of the day, giving the Green Wave a 10-7 first quarter lead. BOTTOM: Byrd's 75-yard touchdown pass to WR Daniel Hopkins concluded the first drive of the second half, and blew the game wide open for the Green Wave with a 38-17 advantage.

QB CURTIS BYRD CONTINUES HIS REDEMPTION, ACCOUNTS FOR 4 TOUCHDOWNS AS GREEN WAVE ROLLS PAST ARCHRIVAL SOUTHERN MISS 41-31

Tulane's big win eliminates Southern Miss from Conference USA championship contention, sets up rematch with Marshall in conference title game | Former 4-star JUCO recruit Hopkins explodes with 204 all-purpose yard performance as Wave wins ""The Battle for the Bell"" | Team now braces for trip to Death Valley to face #21 LSU in regular season finale

Hattiesburg, MS -- The Tulane Green Wave offense totaled 545 yards en route to a shootout victory over rival Southern Miss 41-31 Saturday in Hattiesburg. Green Wave QB Curtis Byrd threw for 293 yards and 3 touchdowns on the day and also had a 13-yard second quarter touchdown run on what was another stellar day for the junior signal-caller.

Byrd's top target on the day was WR Daniel Hopkins, a junior college transfer this past off-season who was rated a 4-star player. Hopkins finished the day with 5 receptions for 133 yards, including a career-long 75-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter that made the score 38-17. He also added 73 yards in return yardage (71 on kick returns) to finish with a total of 206 all-purpose yards on his breakout day.

Southern Miss (8-3, 6-2) was able to climb back into the game by answering with a 3-yard touchdown run by RB Alan Howze and a 1-yard scoring run by WR Donnie Newsome on their next two drives which made the score 38-31 going into the fourth quarter. Howze led the Golden Eagles with 97 rushing yards on 21 carries.

In the end though, Tulane was able to control the clock for most of the fourth quarter and PK Jonathan Ginsburgh's 26-yard field goal with 3:04 remaining made the score 41-31, all but putting the game away.

After going 3 and out on their ensuing possession, Southern Miss made a questionable decision to punt the ball away with just under 3 minutes to go in the game and down by two scores. The decision would backfire, as they would not see the ball again.

RB Orleans Darkwa, who finished with a game-high 121 rushing yards, was able to convert three first downs following the punt, allowing Tulane to run out the remainder of the clock.

The Green Wave finished with 252 total rushing yards, getting a career-high 91 yards from junior RB Joey Roberts, most of which coming on an 83-yard touchdown run which gave his team a 17-10 lead in the third quarter.

The loss for the Golden Eagles drops their Conference USA record to 6-2, which ties Marshall's 6-2 finish in the Conference USA Eastern division. By virtue of their 26-18 win over Southern Miss in week 10, the Thundering Herd wins the tie-breaker and will host Tulane in two weeks in the Conference USA Championship Game. Marshall defeated the Green Wave 30-27 in overtime at the Superdome in week 9 of this season.

Tulane (7-4, 6-2) will make the short trip to Baton Rouge next week to face their archrivals, #21 LSU (7-4). The then-22nd ranked Green Wave fell to the then-9th ranked Tigers 35-28 at the Louisiana Superdome in a heartbreaker last season. LSU then-sophomore QB Zach Lee found senior WR Rueben Randall for a 35-yard touchdown with just :07 remaining in the game to win it for the Tigers.

The Green Wave has not defeated LSU since a 31-28 win in 1982 at Tiger Stadium and has dropped 19 straight games versus their former SEC foe. LSU leads the in-state series with a 70-22-7 record.

I think you're right. I was shocked to see us as receiving votes. I hadn't even been checking the ""others receiving votes"" so no telling how long we've been there. It has been a refreshing end here as we wind down this this so-called ""down year.""

Thanks man...Byrd is really stepping it up. He's going to make it hard for me to sit him in favor of High next year.

4 losses for the teams at the bottom of the poll isn't really all that uncommon. That caught me off-guard as well but I looked it up and sure enough, there are plenty of 4 loss teams each year in the bottom portion of the final polls.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed on the SEC selection but I won't get my hopes up too high like last year!

Thanks cheese - We still have a shot at 10 wins this season. It is suddenly not an unrealistic goal. Just three games ago, I was wondering if we'd even qualify for a bowl game!

Baton Rouge, LA -- The Tulane Green Wave gained 422 yards of total offense and forced 3 LSU turnovers on their way to a 38-21 upset win Saturday at Tiger Stadium in a rain storm. Tulane QB Curtis Byrd finished 12 of 15 for 223 yards and 3 touchdowns, leading the Green Wave to their fourth consecutive victory and their first over LSU since a 31-28 win at Tiger Stadium in 1982. Tulane had dropped 19 consecutive games to the the rival Tigers going into Saturday's contest.

Tulane opened the game up by going on a 15-play 77-yard drive which took up the game's first 5:28. The possession culminated with a 2-yard touchdown pass from Byrd to RB Orleans Darkwa on a swing-screen pass which made the score 7-0. Darkwa finished the game with 116 yards from scrimmage and 2 touchdowns.

"We thought that it was important for us to set the tone of the game early and we put a lot of thought into our play selection to begin the game," said Tulane head coach D. Geezy.

"That was without question one of the more impressive opening drives that I have been a part of when you factor in the weather conditions and the hostile environment we were in."

LSU (7-5) would tie the game in the second quarter when QB Zach Lee found WR James Wright in the back of the end zone for a 30-yard touchdown completion that made the score 7-7. Tulane would then take the game over.

Byrd's 58-yard touchdown pass to WR Daniel Hopkins on Tulane's ensuing drive made the score 14-7 with 5:48 to go until halftime. P Jonathan Ginsburgh would force a fumble on the following kickoff and MLB Samson Beck recovered for the Green Wave, setting them up with prime field position to take the game over.

Five plays following the turnover, Darkwa pounded his way through the line for a 1-yard touchdown run on 3rd and goal that made the score 21-7. Ginsburgh would later add a field goal at the end of the half to go into the break with a commanding 24-7 lead.

"That was one of the finest halves of football I have seen from our team in a long time," said Geezy.

LSU would come out of the locker room on fire however as Lee found Wright again on just the second play of the third quarter, this time on a 63-yard touchdown to make the score 24-14.

Tulane would answer with a 63-yard touchdown of their own when Byrd found WR Brent Comardelle wide open on a streak pattern, burning LSU FS Craig Loston on the play to make the score 31-14.

"It was important for us to answer that early punch they gave us in the third," said Geezy.

The game was put away late in the third quarter. Nursing a 31-21 lead with 3:30 remaining in the period, the Tulane defense would come up big as FS Will Washington picked off Lee on a pass towards the sideline and returned it 70 yards for a touchdown that made the score 38-21 with 1:32 to go in the third quarter. The interception was Washington's first of the season and it was the second career touchdown for the sophomore Missouri native.

"That was a big-time play when we needed it most," said Geezy.

"William did a heck of a job of baiting the quarterback into making that throw and as soon as the ball was released, I could see from the sideline that we were looking at a pick-6.

"Words can't describe just how proud I am of the effort we had out there today. This was a big team win and a milestone victory for Tulane football."

The Green Wave (8-4, 6-2) now turn their attention to next week when they'll face Marshall (6-6, 6-2) in the Conference USA Championship Game in Huntington. Tulane won last year's CUSA title game 34-3 over UCF at the Louisiana Superdome.

The Thundering Herd defeated the Green Wave 30-27 in overtime back in week 9 of this season.

It is a beautiful thing seeing Tulane in the top 25.
It surely is looking like Byrd is trying to re-claim his job. I am going to find it hard to sit him in his senior year after how far he's come. He really comes to play in big games. I should start calling him ""Big Game"" Byrd.

That was the plan...Steady, balanced play-calling and T.O.P. We were able to put together some long drives and we were able to respond to their punches with punches of our own. This was really a COMPLETE performance by our team.
