    REFUSE TO LOSE

Tulane PK Bennett's 21-yard field goal as time expires caps off a see-saw battle with Kentucky as Green Wave wins 45-42 shootout | RB Moore's spectacular fourth quarter and big play on game's final drive propels Tulane to their 4th straight victory | QB Byrd leads explosive day for Green Wave offense, throws for a career-high 445 yards and 3 touchdowns | Team now braces for gigantic road clash with #1 Alabama next week

New Orleans, LA -- Green Wave head coach D. Geezy has seen some game-breaking players over the course of his college coaching and NFL front office career however he may be witnessing the blossoming of the best he's seen. Tulane RB Reggie Moore scored two touchdowns and had a clutch 73-yard reception on the game's final possession to set up a 21-yard game-winning field goal by PK Cody Bennett as time expired, lifting the Green Wave to a 45-42 victory over Kentucky Saturday at the Louisiana Superdome. In a game that featured multiple lead changes and strings of unanswered points by both sides, it all came down to who had the football last.

After taking a 28-14 lead via a 54-yard bomb from QB Curtis Byrd to third-string RB Anthony Barnett, Tulane would force what looked to be a three and out on Kentucky's next possession and looked to be in firm control of the game. However the Wildcats called a fake punt on the 4th and 3 and FB Maurice Richardson took the direct snap and ran 7 yards for a first down at the Green Wave 48-yard line. Five plays later, Kentucky QB Tyler Brause found WR Jameel Gordon for a 25-yard touchdown pass to cut their deficit to 28-21.

Kentucky (0-8, 0-5) would force a three and out on Tulane's next possession. Following the ensuing punt, Brause directed an 11-play 75-yard drive which culminated with a 1-yard scoring pass to Gordon which tied the game at 28-28. Brause finished the game with 294 passing yards and 3 touchdowns.

"We could not get off the field all day long on third down defensively," said Tulane defensive coordinator/assistant head coach Charles Kelly said of his unit which allowed Kentucky to convert 11 of 17 third down conversion attempts and control the clock with 19:29 of possession time.

The Wildcats would grab the lead early in the fourth quarter via a 1-yard touchdown run by RB Derek Jefferson which made the score 35-28 with 8:16 remaining - That's when Moore took over.

The freshman 4-star recruit would score on a 31-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 35-35. Two possessions later, Moore's 8-yard touchdown reception out of the backfield gave Tulane a 42-35 lead. Moore finished the game with a team-high 6 receptions for 108 yards and a touchdown.

Kentucky would tie the game back up at 42-42 via a 1-yard touchdown run by RB Jason Sanders with 0:26 remaining, seemingly setting the stage for overtime.

However Moore would come through with one more heroic play. First, Moore would return the ensuing kickoff to the 23-yard line. On the very next play, Byrd found Moore deep down the field on a desperation heave in which the Schreiver, LA native hauled in at the 20-yard line and ran all the way down to the 4-yard line for a 73-yard gain before being tackled. The Green Wave would let the clock run all the way down to 0:02, setting up the game-winning field goal by Bennett as the clock expired, giving Tulane the 45-42 victory.

"I think it is safe to say that Reggie is emerging as our 'closer' or the proverbial 'home run hitter' for us," said Geezy.

"It is sort of like in basketball where in the clutch, you knew Michael Jordan was getting the ball for the last shot or Reggie Miller would take the final three pointer. He has proven time and time again that when we need a big play, he is a capable go-to guy."

Moore wasn't the only player with a spectacular performance. Byrd finished the day with a career-high 445 passing yards and 3 touchdown on the day, leading Tulane to their fourth straight win this season. His previous career-high was a 440-yard performance in a 41-32 loss at Rice in his freshman season.

Tulane (7-1, 4-1) will travel next week to face #1 Alabama (7-0, 5-0) in a monster conference clash in Tuscaloosa. It will be the Green Wave's first game outside of the friendly confines of the Louisiana Superdome, where they are 5-0 this season, in nearly a month. The Crimson Tide has one each of the past five SEC championships, dating back to the 2009 season.

"They have what may be the best quarterback in college football in Josh Hunter," said Geezy of what many believe is the nation's Heisman favorite.

Hunter has thrown for 2,069 yards, 18 touchdowns and only 2 interceptions this season and also has 169 rushing yards and 2 rushing touchdowns, leading Alabama to the nation's #1 points per game ranking at 42.4 ppg (Tulane is #4 with 35.6 ppg).

"He is probably the fastest quarterback we'll ever see and their team is probably the fastest I personally have ever seen. They have speed across the board at all of the skill positions. We'll have our hands full and it will be a big challenge but one I believe our team has proven itself capable of succeeding in."

QB Curtis Byrd throws a deep pass down the sideline over the out-stretched arms of a Kentucky defender and into the hands of WR Brent Comardelle. The redshirt senior then took it the rest of the way to the house for a 76-yard touchdown to cut Tulane's deficit to 14-7 in the first quarter.

Man I must say, it will take a lot of luck for us to beat Bama. All of their years of #1 recruiting classes have paid off. They have speed across the board and 90+ guys across the board. They may be the best team, on paper, I have ever played.

I'm going to start documenting it over the last few weeks of the year but right now he is #5 on the Heisman watch list. All of his big games and clutch performances are getting noticed.

I sure am glad we stuck with Byrd at QB. He is delivering well as a senior. It has been a long journey with him.

You're right, suddenly our schedule doesn't look as tough as it once did. Bama will certainly be tough as will Georgia Tech at the end of the year.

On a side note it has been nice to see the recruiting jump dramatically since your entrance into the SEC. Huge game coming up against 'Bama if you could pull off the upset...man o man.....can't wait to see the update! good luck
The recruiting seems to be a lot easier, though still a challenge. The A+ Conferece Prestige pitch has been money. Our recruit hostesses are getting the job done this year as well.

Moore could really make a statement in regards to the Heisman in this next game. Alabama's QB is the leading Heisman candidate right now so it should be a pretty fun head-to-head matchup.

Thanks man...I see this game being a shootout. I have confidence in my offense but not so much on defense. We need to minimize turnovers and control the clock. We do that, we'll have a shot.

As always, I appreciate the feedback and comments from everyone...The Bama game will be played tonight!

Tulane | Two more four star prospects commit
          Fri, 31 Oct 2014 7:30:49 -0700
Tammy Nunez of the New Orleans Times Picayune reports that the Tulane Green Wave have received committments from a pair of 4-star players: CB Eric Jefferson (5-11 166 pounds, Texas, #13 CB prospect) and WR Herbie Smith (6-0 190 pounds, Mississippi, #26 WR prospect).

Jefferson visited Tulane's campus during the weekend of their week 9 win over Kentucky and will join 4-star CB Cedric Burnette and 4-star FS Dre Harris to try to improve Tulane's secondary which has struggled this season, currently ranked 114th in the nation in pass defense.

Smith, who also visited in week 9, runs a 4.36 40 and is expected to compete immediately for playing time next season with both of the team's starting receivers, John Lacey (78) and Brent Comardelle (76), set to graduate after this season.

Tulane has now received commitments from a total of four 4-star players, the most ever under head coach D. Geezy. The previous high was two, accomplished this past off-season (Freshman RB Reggie Moore and freshman WR Brennan Carpenter).

I agree with your assesment. My squad will have to play a near-perfect game to win this one and that's what we plan to do! If we can get a break or two and Reggie can catch fire in the return game like he was early in the year, we'll have a shot.

One thing is for sure - I'm not looking for a moral victory here; We're in it to win it!

Yeah this place was a great find for me too. A lot of old names here and the participation level is better than any other board I have ever been on, including old Madden Mania.

Sadly, you were 100% correct. We just did not have the horses to keep up with their team. They have superior athletes across the board and it showed.

Crimson Tide QB Josh Hunter completes a 10-play opening drive with this 3-yard touchdown pass to WR Corey Martin to give Alabama an early 7-0 lead. The scoring toss was the first of six on the day for Hunter.

                A HEAVY DOSE OF REALITY

#1 Alabama steamrolls through #18 Tulane in 51-17 massacre at Bryant-Denny Stadium | Crimson Tide QB Josh Hunter has record-breaking performance, shredding the overmatched Green Wave defense for 305 yards and 6 touchdowns on the night | Following a week 11 BYE, team hopes to finish unbeaten at the Superdome in home finale versus Arkansas

Tuscaloosa, AL -- The #1 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide scored early and often, quickly disposing of the 18th ranked Tulane Green Wave 51-17 Saturday evening at Bryant-Denny Stadium. The Crimson Tide, winners of five straight SEC titles dating back to the 2009 season, converted on a whopping 12 of 13 (92%) third down conversion attempts and controlled the game from start to finish, amassing over 500 total yards by their #1 ranked offense.

Alabama junior QB Josh Hunter posted another strong performance in his bid for the Heisman Trophy, going 31 of 39 for 305 yards and 6 touchdowns, taking advantage of a porous Green Wave secondary. His six touchdown passes broke a single game Alabama school record, topping former Crimson Tide QB Gary Hollingsworth's record of 5 which was set in 1989 versus Ole Miss.

The team also got an impressive performance from junior RB John Stewart, who finished with 154 yards on 21 carries and 1 touchdown.

"We knew coming into this game that it would be a challenge. You don't win five straight championships in this conference by accident," said Tulane head coach D. Geezy.

"Give their team and coaches a lot of credit. They're a well-oiled machine and quite frankly, we just couldn't keep up with them today. Any time you allow a team to convert 92% of their third downs, chances are you will lose and you will lose big."

Tulane, the nation's #10 ranked offense at the start of the day, was held to just 318 yards, well below their average of 447 yards per game coming in. Their point total of 17 was their lowest scoring output since week two of last season, a 41-7 loss to Kentucky at the Superdome. Saturday's 34-point loss tied the team's 2013 game versus the Wildcats for the worst loss by the Green Wave under Geezy.

""They really controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball and offensively, we just couldn't get anything going,"" said Geezy.

"We wanted to establish a balanced attack but once we got down big early, we had to lean more towards the pass more than we originally planned."

Tulane freshman star RB Reggie Moore finished with 10 carries for only 54 yards and no touchdowns. Moore was also held in check in the return game, gaining just 93 yards on 7 kick returns for a paltry 13.2 average with a long of only 17. The game marked the first of Moore's young career that he was held out of the end zone as either a runner, receiver, or returner.

Senior RB Joey Roberts led the team with 67 rushing yards on 6 carries, including a 34-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to cut his team's deficit to 35-10.

The Green Wave would bench starting QB Curtis Byrd in the fourth quarter after he went 11 of 22 for only 114 yards while throwing one interception, which came on the game's opening possession and perhaps set the tone for the afternoon. Back-up QB Anthony High finished the game in relief of Byrd and went 6 of 7 for 72 yards.

"There is nothing to read into there. Curtis is our starting quarterback," said Geezy.

"We rotated a lot of guys out of the game in the fourth quarter just to get some of our younger players some live snaps and also to preserve several of our key players from injuries in what basically became a meaningless quarter of football; Although with the way they passed the ball around late in the game, their coaches certainly didn't think it was," Geezy added, taking a shot at Alabama for what he perceived as running up the score and running up the stat sheet for Hunter.

Tulane (7-2, 4-2) will host Arkansas (3-5, 2-3) next week at the Louisiana Superdome. The Razorbacks are 4-0 all-time versus the Green Wave with their last win coming in a 34-15 bowl win in the 1980 Hall of Fame Classic. Tulane will be looking to finish undefeated at home for the first time since 1998, when the team finished with a 12-0 overall recod.

In a sick way, I enjoyed it. I would have been disappointed if I went into Bryant-Denny Stadium and won with my current personnel. This means the game is still a challenge and there is still work that needs to be done.

It sounds crazy, but for me this would be categorized as a ""good loss"" for the dynaty.

Yeah he did well in mop-up duty. I decided to get him some action and not risk an injury to Byrd. I can't wait to use this guy full-time next season. I feel a different level of confidence with him in the game and felt it in the 3 or 4 games he started last year before getting hurt.

I just can't sit my boy Byrd down in his senior year though.

Moore really struggled to get going. He had some nice runs early in the game but the holes quickly evaporated. We knew he'd have a bad game at some point, too bad it had to be in such a big game like this.

                    He'll bounce back.

Hopefully a day will come too when you can pay Alabama back for running up the score...six passing touchdowns...that's just absurd. Good luck against the Razorbacks
I still think we are a season or two away from being able to go into Alabama and come out with a win. With the recruiting classes they keep coming out with, they will consistently be stacked with players rated 90+ across the board.

I think we'll be ready by the time we visit them again in 2016.

Thanks guys... I think this one should be a close, high-scoring game. Hopefully we can continue to establish the Superdome as one of the toughest places to play. We're trying to establish a winning home tradition and if we win this one, we'll finish the year undefeated in New Orleans.

About to fire it up now...Results will be posted later on tonight!

TOP ROW: Tulane QB Curtis Byrd sees no one open so he scrambles into the open field and burns the defense for a 37-yard touchdown run which made the score 17-3 early in the fourth quarter. The 37-yard touchdown matched a career-high on a scoring run for Byrd, a mark he set in his first game as a freshman back in 2011 against Army. | BOTTOM ROW: With his team set to get the ball back trailing 17-10 with 1:49 remaining, Arkansas WR/PR Marquel Wade fields a Tulane punt and immediately gets nailed by Green Wave junior CB/Gunner Andrew Adams and fumbles the football. Sophomore CB/Gunner Chris Garrison would pounce onto the football at the Razorbacks' 27-yard line, putting Tulane in position to run out the clock.

TULANE COLLECTS FOUR TURNOVERS EN ROUTE TO A THRILLING 17-10 VICTORY OVER ARKANSAS

QB Byrd gets the job done on the ground, rushing for two touchdowns in his final home game as a member of the Green Wave | Subbing in for injured Arkansas star WR Bennett, late special teams fumble by Wade costs Razorbacks an opportunity to tie the game | With big Senior Day win, Tulane finishes the season undefeated at the Superdome | Team will wrap up SEC play with road date at 2-8 Ole Miss next week

New Orleans, LA -- The Tulane Green Wave played sound defense and came up with timely stops and four turnovers on their way to a 17-10 win over Arkansas Saturday afternoon at the Louisiana Superdome. Green Wave senior QB Curtis Byrd starred for his team on Senior Day, scoring two rushing touchdowns. The four-year starter, playing in his final game at the Superdome, finished the day 10 of 20 for only 140 yards while throwing one interception however he did most of his damage on the ground.

Following a missed chip shot 28-yard field goal by the usually reliable Razorbacks PK Andre Davis, Tulane would go on a 10-play 80-yard drive which took up 3:35 and culminated with Byrd's second score of the day, a 37-yard scamper. The play tied Byrd's career-long for a touchdown run which was set in his first game as a member of the Green Wave, a 17-7 win at Army in 2011.

The Razorbacks (4-6) would quickly answer back by going on a long drive of their own. QB Jacoby Walker found TE Billy Bean for a 1-yard touchdown following a 17-play 78-yard drive which took up 4:23 and included two fourth down conversions. The play made the score 17-10 with 4:00 remaining.

Tulane would be forced to punt on their ensuing possession, setting the stage for a pair of unlikely heroes. Arkansas PR/WR Marquel Wade, subbing in at punt returner for WR Tyler Bennett who was severely injured in the first quarter, was drilled immediately after fielding the punt by junior CB Andrew Adams, jarring the ball loose. Sophomore CB Chris Garrison was 'Johnny on the Spot' and immediately pounced on the football, giving his team possession of the ball at the 27-yard line with just 1:49 remaining with a chance to run out the clock.

Arkansas would burn each of its remaining two timeouts on first and second down runs by Tulane which put the Green Wave in a 3rd and 5 situation. Knowing that the worst case scenario would be a game-clinching field goal attempt, Tulane head coach D. Geezy chose to play it conservative and call a running play with RB Reggie Moore. Moore would deliver with a 9-yard run which put the game away and allowed the Green Wave to kneel on the ball three times to end the game.

Tulane's defense finished the game with a season-high four forced turnovers (3 fumble recoveries and 1 interception). FS Will Washington led the defense with 12 tackles on the day.

The Green Wave (8-2, 5-2) will travel to Oxford next week to take on Ole Miss (2-8, 2-5) in their SEC season finale prior to wrapping up the regular season at #5 Georgia Tech (9-1). Tulane upset then-#6 ranked Ole Miss 24-20 in the two schools' last meeting, which took place in 2012. The win represents the Green Wave's only win over a top 10 opponent in school history. The Rebels lead the all-time series between the two schools with a 42-29 record.

No doubt about it man...He has come a long way and deserves to go out with a bang. I won't force anything, but I definitely plan to give this guy every opportunity to carry this team through this final stretch. He's led us to some big wins over his career.

Yeah it sure seems like he's trying to sneak his way into day 1 of the NFL draft. :benchpress:

I really enjoyed last night's rare defensive battle. Those are few and far in between with this game unfortunately.

One of the things I hoped to establish from the very outset of this dynasty (see page 1 introductory press conference) is domefield advantage. I want to turn the Superdome into one of if not the toughest place for an opponent to win in. Going undefeated this season goes a long way towards accomplishing that goal.

With the likes of Alabama and LSU coming into the dome next year, that streak will surely be tested.

Its hard to believe he is a senior already, seems like just yesterday when you recruited him (sorry a little nostalgia coming through haha). It looks like you should have little trouble with Ole Miss and then the Georgia Tech game is going to be a big one. Good luck man, time to finish the season strong
It seems like it was just yesterday he was leading us as a true freshman. He has come such a long way. He's been nothing spectacular, but he's led us to two conference titles and a SEC invite over his time year. He's left his mark at Tulane university, that's for sure.

We still have an outside shot at the BCS. We'll need a little bit of help but if we can win these next two and get into the top 12 or so, we may be in position for an at-large berth.

This is when dynasty mode gets extremely fun; It really adds to the fun-factor when you start seeing guys you recruited graduate. This will be my first recruiting class' final hurrah.

Thanks man...The defense surprisingly came to play. They moved the ball on us, but we came up with some timely turnovers and took advantage of their mistakes. We're tough to beat when we play like that on defense.

EDITORS NOTE: How's that for the ultimate twist of fate? Undefeated #1 Alabama, playing against an unranked Auburn team at home with a national title game berth in the balance, falls by a score of ::::drum roll::::........28-27. :jawdrop2:

They'll still play for their 6th consecutive SEC title dating back to 2009, but I thought that was pretty neat.
