Don't buy packs.

1) Start your season ASAP. Worst case scenario you get a card you don't need and a little extra RP.

2) Play as much as possible. Honestly this is the best thing you can do. While completing your daily goals.

3) Play every event as much as possible. As Fip said, try and get the best card you can in each.

4) Don't waste money on anything that isn't at least a duplicate of a card you have.

I could give you a few free SR's if you want. It would cost you roughly 714 RP to get an SR.
