Thanks for the feedback guys. The layout is still obviously new and I am working on fixing the kinks...in this case better organizing what I have.

whughes, Kind of interesting that your offense played well, because usually it's been your defense that plays really well. But as you'll see in the coming weeks, Michigan State is a really good team, so don't feel too bad about one loss yet.

UConn to sport 2008 throwbacks for Donald Brown Day

With UConn's season opener vs. Illinois on Saturday doubling as a welcome home and jersey retiring party for the legendary Donald Brown, UConn is making their last preparations before jersey #34 is set to hang in the rafters.

Brown is already set to have his number retired before the game with stars of yesteryear set to return to congratulate the UConn legend, but Brown has also been named an honorary captain for the game and the Property will be selling $1 hot dogs all day.

However, if that wasn't enough, there is one last touch that will take the cake.

UConn is set to break out the classic navy blue and off-white throwbacks with the block "C" worn by Brown and crew from 2005-08 against Illinois. This will mark (I believe) the first time they have been worn since Brown's last game in the 2009 International Bowl, a win against Buffalo.

New A.D. Bobby Valentine made a point that this will probably be the last time this uniform will ever be worn, stating "We don't wear alternate jerseys very often, but this week is a special week. Donald has meant a lot to this football program and we are excited to see this uniform combo at the Rent one last time."

Kickoff for Saturday's game is at 3:30, and the game will be broadcast on ESPN.

Running up the middle will be tough because Jeff McNeal's speed makes him more of an outside runner. Our O-Line was below average late last year, and I can't count on them opening holes up the middle against solid ends in Treak and Crossley. I'm really worried about our D-Line without Rourke for these opening two games, my hope is that we can contain their run game. Fortunately for us, Smith is a robo-QB so I don't need to worry about scrambles much. We do, luckily, have a lot of linebackers so I may mix and match there a bit if something goes wrong.

There is a lot we're going to learn about the team early with a lot of new faces now moving into starting roles. (That 2014 recruiting class was really good to us, but they're all gone now). The most important thing we need to settle is QB and our own secondary, but I think we can do it! Hopefully moving Sinclair to corner for now will help bring some experience (and height) and I'm confident in Jake Crowder. If someone falters, we have a freshman in Shavlion Wade and a sophomore in Kyler Parks, and I can burn a few redshirts at safety (Tony Rush, Kion East, Victor Castalanetta....).

As for QB, I know I need someone in recruiting this season (having played ahead, I do have at least one athlete committed that I'll be moving to QB, we'll meet him later), but I think TDL can eventually develop into the guy. We'll see what happens!

As for the recruits, I usually edit names and faces after signing day (for reasons I still do not know). I have, though, figured out how to edit recruiting classes in the pre-season and import yours (thanks BTW ), and though I won't be utilizing your real classes in this dynasty, I have been working on a fake recruiting class that may or may not be complete in time to make it to this dynasty (definitely my next project, whenever that comes around).

I'd like to work on a bunch of fake classes as time progresses and release them to the public, as you know it helps broaden the name pool, and eliminate the weird events seen in this game's recruiting that us compulsive players want to rid ourselves of (black kickers, white cornerbacks, things that aren't very common). The only problem is it takes a lot of time!!!

Aided by six-sack Gene Jackson, late defensive score and Isaac Jackson-led TD drives, UConn fends off Smith, #12 Illini in OT ----- RB McNeal leaves with long-term elbow injury

Trailing late in the fourth having just failed to convert a fourth down six yards away from a tie game, Sammie Leonard (left) was able to sack Shawn Smith and pop the ball free. Marcus Bradford (center, right) was able to scoop and score to get UConn back in the game.

No matter what you think about UConn, you can't deny this: These guys have a knack for playing in peril.

While Donald Brown was the star of the day as his #34 was hung gracefully next to the Property scoreboard at halftime, the heroes ended up being two unlikely protagonists.

It was backup QB Isaac Jackson (and backup coach Bill Cubit) who orchestrated a TD drive to tie the game with six seconds left in regulation and a pair of touchdown drives in two overtime sessions, allowing UConn to complete a rally and hold off the 12th ranked Illinois Fighting Illini in East Hartford on a day where many questions remained unanswered for the shorthanded Huskies.

While UConn was able to ride a big play from star defender Marcus Bradford and a few stray backups on offense to rally home, the Huskies' starting offense proved to be just as much of a jumbled mess as projected. Even more so when the projected work horse of the running back stable, junior Jeff McNeal, exited the game left in the fourth quarter with a serious elbow injury -- one that's projected to keep him out for most of the season.

Sophomore quarterback Tanner Dean-Lowry got the start and struggled all day, having lots of troubles with accuracy (completing less than 40% of his 27 throws) and turnovers (three INT's). It didn't help that he had to play from behind most of the game, as Illinois got the ball first and swiftly moved down the field, culminating in a Shawn Smith 26 yard TD pass to Cedric Stover to put the Illini up 7-0 just a minute and change into the game.

Even with TDL's shaky start, UConn was thoroughly outplayed on both ends early on, as they were outgained 206-16 by Smith and the Illini before the Huskies' first scoring drive. However, by that point Illinois had ran the lead to 14-0, as Smith fired a second TD pass, this time to Cedric Christopher from 23 yards out.

Redshirt freshman Carlton Parker assisted TDL by giving him a short field, returning the ensuing Illini kickoff to the Illinois 46. McNeal, while in the game, looked strong, as his 28 yard run around a heavy Illini blitz took UConn to the 1 yard line before local prospect Luke Williamson cleaned up for UConn's first points of the season.

Despite a Mike Miller missed field goal from 43 yards out to start the second quarter, the Husky D started to dig in, getting a fantastic diving INT in the end zone from Jake Crowder to prevent Illinois from stretching the lead further for a while.

However, TDL never settled in. He responded by throwing an interception back to Zach Pennington just four plays later, squashing the momentum of a promising drive. And unfortunately for TDL, the next two drives before the half also ended in INT's, relegating UConn to just seven points in the first half. Meanwhile, Smith threw his third TD pass of the first half, the second to Stover, on a 25 yard TD where Stover slipped behind coverage of Derek Robinson to send the game to 21-7 at the half.

UConn was able to pull the deficit back within a touchdown after TDL hit Rodney Reid from nine yards out. While a Gene Jackson sack -- at that point his fourth of the day (he'd finish with six, a new school record) -- helped UConn hold the Illini, TDL would be forced to leave the game soon thereafter with an MCL sprain after getting hit hard on UConn's next drive, leaving UConn backup QB Isaac Jackson to fend for himself.

Luckily, they got some help. Freshman kicker J.P. Quinn missed a pair of field goals right in the third. Tailback Erik Jones was still able to break a few big runs (He'd end with 140 yards), but wasn't fed the ball nearly enough for his success and skill levels; he only received 14 carries.

McNeal left the game early in the fourth with the aforementioned elbow injury while UConn faced a 21-14 deficit, but the more mobile QB Isaac Jackson still led a great drive, scrambling for 31 yards in total and getting timely carries from the redshirt frosh Williamson. However, the drive fizzled and a fourth down pass to Williamson fell incomplete, leaving the Illini in great position with just under two minutes to play.

After a 25 yard pass to Nate Simmons though, coach Tim Beckman's decision to not run his impact tailback Jones started to pay negative dividends. Sammie Leonard got to Smith and sacked him on the next play, knocking the ball free while Illini linemen sprawled on the ground. In the midst of the carnage, it was All-American inside 'backer Marcus Bradford who scooped the ball up and ran it in from 31 yards out for the tying score.

However, the job was far from done for either side. Using two quick passes of 20 and 14 to Aaron Thompson to ignite the drive, Smith found Stover for a 42 yard TD to put the Illini back up 28-21, leaving roughly a minute left for I-Jax and UConn.

Having already helped UConn to a win against Kansas State last year, it'd be foolish to say having him in the game in that situation is a bad thing. In fact, with just 75 seconds remaining I-Jax drove UConn 82 yards, throwing 5-7, converting a pair of crucial third downs before hitting Kevin Lacey off-balance for the equalizer, sending the game to OT.

In the extra frame, UConn received the ball first and scored in precisely three plays, Jackson running for 15 and Williamson for 9 before pounding in the go-ahead score for UConn's first lead of the day, 35-28. Illinois matched with a TD pass from Smith (his fifth) to Simmons in one play to send the contest to a second round of overtime.

The most crucial play in the game came when Illinois had to settle for a Quinn field goal after an Eric Eanon drop that would have moved the chains on 3rd and 10 (he had a shared team high six catches). That would prove costly, as UConn converted the winning TD two plays later, I-Jax finding an open Reid on an out route to the left side from 24 yards to send UConn out on top on Donald Brown Day.

With that, friends, welcome to another season of UConn football. Where the misfits rule and outcasts and reserves shine. On a wild day, it was Illinois headman Beckman who had the best words after the game:

"Those guys can really throw anyone out there and have success. Wow..."

Of course, UConn (and yours truly) have an uphill climb to fix a leaky offense, one that had a mane break with McNeal's injury. Stay tuned for news on the QB race into next week, and who we'll be replacing McNeal with. Tennessee and new headman Marty English -- defensive coordinator on UConn's 2017 national title team -- will travel to the Property next week to face the Diaco-less Huskies, we'll see you then.

Haha, those were no doubt the good days of UConn football. Unfortunately for you, this is probably the only time I'll wear these in this dynasty. I wish I had more alternates to wear....

Also, as much as I hate the Jets (and the fact that we won't likely face Pittsburgh now that we're #2).. I send my condolences your way. I DO NOT want to see Pittsburgh in the playoffs. At all. (Though at least they can beat Denver...)

No worries cheese, the updates will slow for at least this week (I have a light exam schedule next week and a few assorted days off later on in the month), so if you have some time this week you'll be back on track in no time.

It was indeed a very nice win against a team that should be good this season, but unfortunately the game caused more problems than solved with McNeal getting hurt and our backup QB (I-Jax) playing better than our starter. And trust me, the games only get stranger from here.

Tennessee will be a tough game next week because we are really familiar with Coach Marty English (he was the DC at UConn when we won the National Title two seasons ago and coached the UCF team that finished #2 last season and won a New Year's Six Bowl). He always puts forth a tough defense so whoever plays on offense needs to step up for us.

Haha, those were no doubt the good days of UConn football. Unfortunately for you, this is probably the only time I'll wear these in this dynasty. I wish I had more alternates to wear....

Also, as much as I hate the Jets (and the fact that we won't likely face Pittsburgh now that we're #2).. I send my condolences your way. I DO NOT want to see Pittsburgh in the playoffs. At all. (Though at least they can beat Denver...)

That hurt. As my title now reads, so much can change in a week. I remember sitting in the lobby of my hotel in Colorado last Sunday, though it feels so long ago, making friends with fellow Jets fans who happened to be there as well, and watching the Fitzmagic unfold, and the coin toss thing. We went nuts, and I thought I was on top of the world. That seems like years ago now. I still can't find myself to hate Rex, and I firmly believed they were going to win... until they didn't, and the game ended, since it's happened to many times. But hey, what can you do? I just hope that when the Jets play the Steelers next year, it's a primetime game, because the Jets are going to want that game more than they've ever wanted to beat the Patriots.

I was ready to see the Jets beat Cincy next weekend, then head to Foxboro and shock the world again...

At least we opened the season with some high scoring in Rutgers. Doesn't look like anyone went off but a team effort is just as good. I think you have the Alabama-Florida final score flipped, but that's just me nitpicking.
