Year 3 (2013), Game 11, Kent State at Eastern Michigan
True freshman kicker Larry Taylor drilled a 37 yard field goal as time expired to win the Eagles' home finale against Kent State.
To the Wire: Taylor Drills Game Winning Kick to Lift Eagles Over Kent State 34-31
Freshman PK Taylor kicks game winner as time expires | Humphrey takes home player of the game honors for 189 yd, 2 TD performance | Eastern Michigan now awaits result of Toledo game.
AP Ypsilanti – True freshman PK Larry Taylor drilled a 37 yard field goal as time expired to help Eastern Michigan down Kent State 34-31. The game was a back and forth slugfest with the Eagles scoring the tying touchdown with just over a minute remaining. It was then that the Eastern Michigan defense, which had been pushed around all day, made the biggest play of the game as FS Sean Cotton picked off a wayward pass from QB Evan Shimensky to set up the game winning field goal.
Eastern Michigan started the game strong as their opening drive culminated with QB Mark Iannotti finding sophomore WR Nick Vaughn on a six yard slant pattern for the first points of the game. Kent State would quickly answer, however, as Shimensky hooked up with WR Jeremy McCoy on a 66 yard strike. HB Robert Holloman would add in a long score to help give Kent State a 17-10 lead heading into halftime. Holloman had a fantastic game for the Golden Flashes finishing with 148 yards and two scores.
The two teams would trade scores late in the third quarter as Kent State held on to their seven point advantage heading into the fourth. Eastern Michigan HB Robert Thomas would tie the game on a 14 yard touchdown drive only to see the score quickly matched by Holloman who punched in his second touchdown just minutes later. Continuing to Impress: Freshman halfback Joel Humphrey is having a fantastic freshman year, running for 1083 yards and 13 touchdowns thus far.
A late score with just over a minute remaining by HB Joel Humphrey would set the Eagles up for the aforementioned defensive heroics and game winning field goal.
The Eagles will now wait to see the result of Toledo-Western Michigan game which kicked off at 3:30 pm but has yet to be decided. Should the Rockets win, they will clinch the MAC west conference and a berth in the conference championship game. If Western Michigan can pull the upset, Eastern Michigan would be in a position to win the MAC West, provided they win next week in Akron.
"I think a lot of people wrote off Kent State because of their record but they have a really solid team. They played us tough all game and it really went down to the wire. Of course, we will all now be glued to our televisions and cheering for our inner state rivals. Last score I saw, Toledo was up 26-24." -- Eagles Head Coach Dan Clayton
The Eagles will travel on the road for their regular season finale against Akron. The two teams last met in 2011. The matchup was the first conference game for Eastern Michigan head coach Dan Clayton. The Eagles would win the game 34-9 with then freshman quarterback Mark Iannotti making his collegiate debut. Iannotti threw for over 200 yards and three scores in the win. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 pm est.
