One Pride - DavidTheGreat's Detroit Lions (Madden 16)

Hello, everyone! In case you didn't know, I am DavidTheGreat20, back for another dynasty. Some of you know that from August 2015-January 2016, I ran a Michigan Wolverines dynasty for a little over a season, turning them around quickly. Well, this time, I've embarked on a new journey, and that is taking the reigns of my favorite NFL team, the Detroit Lions, and reversing their misfortunes of the past 50 years. Motown greats like Barry Sanders, Herman Moore, and Lem Barney all enjoyed personal success, but all three combined for 0 Super Bowl appearances.

That's why I'm here. I'm going under the persona of lifelong fan David Teegee (get it?), who experienced more lows than highs rooting for the Lions. Inheriting a roster full of studs like Matthew Stafford, Calvin Johnson, and Ezekiel Ansah among others, the main problem is finding an identity. Are they a West Coast team or a Power Running scheme? Are they an aggressive 3-4 or a conservative 4-3?

        Yearly Rosters + Scheme

        SCHEME:

        Offense: Vertical Offense (Air Coryell)
        Defense: Attacking 3-4

QB: My quarterbacks don't have to be speedsters, but have enough mobility to get out of the pocket and gain some yards. As a passer, arm strength is a must. Deep ball accuracy should be decent, as I tend to stretch the field vertically.

RB: Versatility trumps everything else. Not only do you need to be proficient running the ball, catching the ball out of the backfield is also beneficial to thriving in the system. Speed along with elusiveness is the main priority.

FB: Rarely used, but needs to be a decent blocker and/or receiver.

WR: My receivers need to be an all-around threat. Hands is as important as speed. Like I said before, I use speed to stretch out a defense. Catching the ball in traffic is a big must as well, as receivers in the system tend to get hit more often than not up the middle.

TE: Blocking does not matter. As long as the tight end has decent speed and good hands, they'll be fine. An important skill position for the offense along with WR and RB.

OL: I like pass blockers on the ends to protect the quarterback. The big uglies in the middle need to be good run blockers and decent pass blockers.

DL: I like to use the edge rusher ala Von Miller. Because the NFL is a pass-heavy league, a good pass rush is a must. Defensive tackles must be good at stopping both the run and getting to the quarterback.

LB: Linebackers get the most action on my defense. Normally, I'd have two pass rushing types paired with the run stoppers. Prototypes are fairly common on the team.

CB: Cornerbacks need to be well rounded. I mix it up frequently between man and zone, but man coverage is more important the way the defense is ran.

S: Safeties have to be able to make plays, whether in coverage or rushing. I like my safeties to have high hit power and zone coverage. Speed isn't necessarily a must, but it's a plus.

K/P: Well balanced kickers and punters is the way to go. Not too much leg, but lots of accuracy is the key.

Season Preview: What to Watch for in the 2015 Detroit Lions

Allen Park, MI - Going into the 2015 season, the Detroit Lions, who finished at a strong 11-5 last year, have a lot of work to do to get to those heights again. Not only do they lose big impact players like Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairley, their unfavorable first half schedule could cause some problems. Their strength-of-schedule is ranked #7 in terms of toughness, with marquee matchups against the Broncos at home on Sunday Night, the Seahawks at CenturyLink, and the Cardinals at home in consecutive weeks.

However, the Lions' owner, David Teegee, does not buy into the notion that this year will be much tougher:

"Yes, we are playing with the cream of the crop. But that's not an excuse for us in the event that we lose. Our city needs a winning team. If we can beat these teams in front of the home crowd, It'll be a helluva season."

Here are some notable storylines to follow in the upcoming season:

Will Ameer Abdullah become the back Detroit's always wanted?

Detroit's second-round pick this year, running back Ameer Abdullah, started off his career with a bang, garnering a ton of preseason hype starting with his 45-yard run against the Jets where he exploded out of his cutback and turned upfield.

New York's head coach Todd Bowles was very impressed, going far enough as to compare him (in terms of quickness) to the great Barry Sanders.

"He's about as quick as Barry Sanders. Not saying he is Barry Sanders, but he's got that quickness."

But both training camp chatter and college success means little. If Abdullah is to finally be the answer at running back Detroit has been searching for while finding only heartbreak and disappointment, he needs to show his skill set translates to the next level.

              Can the Offensive Line Improve?

The offensive line has always been the problem for the Lions. Despite a horrendous O-line last year, the team was able to make the playoffs, albeit losing to Dallas in the first round.

The offseason brought some optimism for Detroit, as in the draft they traded down to acquire Manny Ramirez from the Broncos and draft promising guard Laken Tomlinson out of Duke to solidify the line.

However, there are some holes. Left tackle Riley Reiff is average at best, center Travis Swanson hasn't proved himself yet, and right tackle LaAdrian Waddle was cut after mightily struggling in his recovery from knee surgery. Will the line get better? Or will it get worse?

How will Matthew Stafford fare in 2015?

Matt Stafford had one of the most efficient seasons of his career in 2014, but also had the least exciting, a far cry from the gunslinging 2013 Stafford. Despite the lesser amount of interceptions, his overall stats held him back, and ultimately led to the offense being weaker than years past.

All of this is in part due to offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi. Known for his role as a quarterbacks coach in New Orleans, his conservative style does not satisfy the front office, especially owner David Teegee.

"I've seen enough from him, and I'll give him one game. If Stafford shows some mighty improvement, then maybe he stays. If Matt craps the bed, he's gone."

The season starts this Sunday when the Lions show up to San Diego to face the Chargers.

                  It's a Tie!
Despite Abdullah's monster debut, Prater's shank leads to rare tie

San Diego, CA - A tie is a very rare occurence in any sport. How is it possible to have exactly as many points as another team and end overtimes with...exactly the same points?

Well, today, a tie happened at the end of the Lions-Chargers game.

Both teams played even throughout the game. However, due to the home field advantage, the Chargers had the upper hand up until the fourth quarter, when a surprise contributor sparked a comeback.

While Detroit's quarterback usually gets the love, Lions rookie Ameer Abdullah carried the team with a special performance. The electric rookie put on a show, breaking off big runs left and right, reminiscent of Barry. Abdullah finished with 186 yards and a touchdown, carrying the workload with 29 carries.

At the half, Detroit led 14-6. However, San Diego ponied up, and Phillip Rivers did inhuman things, finding receivers with laser accuracy and churning out big plays. Meanwhile, Detroit was struggling mightily on offense. Matthew Stafford, while efficient, was ultimately benched in the fourth for his joke of a game. Despite completing 65% of his passes, he threw a terrible 5 interceptions. With Detroit having pretty much no one competing for his job, how will Detroit survive?

                  In came Dan Orlovsky.

Losing 22-14 near the end of the fourth quarter, Orlovsky started off REALLY HOT. Before his first incompletion, he threw 9 pinpoint darts in a row, tearing up the Chargers' secondary for big yards. The clock-milking drive brought the momentum back to Detroit when Dan O found Calvin Johnson in the endzone for 6. Converting the two-point conversion, San Diego needed to score to put the game away, and they did, as with 1:49 left, Danny Woodhead plowed in for a one-yard score.

The Lions, playcalling more relentless, marched down the field and didn't hold back. Practice squad callup Corey Washington came up HUGE for the Lions, scoring the game-tying touchdown on a 25-yard catch-and-run. Holding San Diego to a punt, Detroit called for a Hail Mary with three seconds left, but Orlovsky got sacked and could not get the pass off.

Overtime was boring, but the excitement rose for Lions fans. Receiving the ball first, the Lions did nothing but punt. Holding San Diego to a three-and-out, Dan Orlovsky led Detroit down the field, but all they can muster up a field goal. The Chargers went on to have a long, time-consuming drive, and with 3:24 left, Josh Lambo tied the game up with a 25-yarder.

With prime position to win the game, the Lions marched down the field, grinding for every yard and fighting for a victory. By the time they were in safe field goal range, there was less than a minute left. Milking the clock, Matt Prater waited patiently as the clock winded down. With 26 seconds left, Prater attempts the kick, but completely shanks it! With little time to spare, Phillip Rivers could not get San Diego into field goal range, and we leave with a tie.

"Our guys fought until the very end, which is all that I wanted to see," said Lions owner/GM David Teegee. "To be honest, I'd much rather have a T instead of an L in our column."

Enjoyed your work in the past my friend so you know I will definitely be following along in this one.

What a surprising start to the season, too, with a tie!

What a weird game! Your screenshots are top notch, and even though I'm currently running with a hated NFC North rival, I'm quickly growing fond of you and your work.

Glad to have you following along, Cheese. Ever since that shank, I've been working hard on the practice field to make sure stuff like this won't happen again.

Thanks man! I enjoy your Vikings dynasty. Division rivalries aside, I think the Vikings are a great team aside from the you-know-what.

                          Welcome, Jim Bob!
Detroit fires Lombardi, promotes QB coach Jim Bob Cooter to OC

David Teegee just had enough of him.

In the first big move of the season, Detroit has fired offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi. Despite a strong second half in a game that ended in a tie, that wasn't enough to save his job.

"Great minds think alike," said Teegee, the Lions' owner. "From the start, I didn't think his style fit with our personnel. My man Matthew Stafford is a guy that fits an aggressive, gunslinging offense, and at points last year I could tell that the system was holding him back. Needless to say, I hope he succeeds somehwere else."

Replacing him is first-time coordinator Jim Bob Cooter, confirmed by head man Jim Caldwell. Last year, Cooter built a good relationship with Stafford, and Caldwell hinted that Stafford will return to form.

"The offense is kind of built around the guy you usually have handling the ball most often," Caldwell explained. "Those two guys have a good relationship, a good synergy. Sometimes it makes it a little bit more easier. It's tough anyway, but it makes it a little easier in terms of the communication."

Cooter is most known for his role as the Broncos' offensive assistant and trust with legendary quarterback Peyton Manning. Back in 2014 when the Lions hired Cooter, Ian Rapoport reported that Manning was upset that Cooter left becuase he valued part of his preparation.

Plus, he's got such a cool name. Born James Robert Cooter, he shortened it to Jim Bob. Simply amazing.

Next week, Detroit will travel to TCF Bank Stadium to face the Minnesota Vikings.

                            Victory Diggs
Late blown coverage propels Yates, Vikings to victory

Minneapolis, MN - This is why we can't have nice things.

With the game in hand with a minute to go, the Detroit Lions choked to give Minnesota's home fans something to root for.

The root of the problem? Stefon Diggs. And the freaking third-string quarterback, T.J. Yates. Filling in for an injured Teddy Bridgewater and an IR'ed Shaun Hill, Yates torched Detroit's relatively weak coverage.

Despite only reeling in four catches, all four made a significant impact on the game. His final statline is as follows: 4 catches for 147 yards and three touchdowns of 69, 8, and 54 yards respectively.

Most of the game was an intense defensive battle. With the Lions' defense bottling up the great Adrian Peterson and Ezekiel Ansah causing disruption in the passing game, Detroit looked good as ever.

Detroit's offense started off hot, died, then came back to life. In his first game as the OC, Jim Bob Cooter did a great job mixing up the plays, and Matthew Stafford looked comfortable in the pocket. Stafford finished with a 56% completion percentage, 382 yards, 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.

After an uneventful first three quarters, both teams came alive in the fourth quarter. Minnesota, then trailing 15-14, rallied and scored nine straight points. Leading the Lions down the field, Matthew Stafford completed passes left and right, while being bailed out by huge catches by Corey Fuller and new pickup Darren Waller. With 3:04, Stafford hit MEGATRON on a goalline fade, and the two point conversion tied the game at 23. Is this going to be a repeat of last week, when the Lions fought to a tie?

The Vikings wasted no time scoring, as on the second play of the drive, Adrian Peterson shook Detroit's horrid tackling and raced 80 yards for the score. 30-23. Gaining yards with ease, the Lions quickly found themselves in opposing territory at the two-minute warning. With 1:03 left, Stafford threw a tight-window pass to T.J. Jones, who laid out for a spectacular one-handed diving catch in the endzone. Going aggressive, Detroit converted the two-point conversion on a Theo Riddick catch. 31-30.

                            Then the unthinkable happens.

The Vikings quickly drove down the field, and with three timeouts, Minnesota had lots of time to spare. Meanwhile, the fatigued Lions defense lost the rush, allowing for big plays. With 19 seconds left, T.J. Yates, avoiding the pass rush, found Diggs WIDE OPEN for a HUGE 54-yard touchdown, crushing the Lions' hopes of a road victory. With Matthew Stafford unable to drive down the field in time, Detroit came home the losers.

"Both teams played a great game," said David Teegee. "We couldn't quite get the victory there, and that sucks. Can't win them all..."
