I was fooling around on 16 earlier and came up with the thought of doing an "expansion" team in franchise. My idea was to pick a team, relocate them, and then during the offseason, fire my staff and entire roster and then draft and sign the players on my team and sign a new staff during the offseason. Is this possible? Is there a way to get rid of cap penalties when you release someone?
Is it possible to do an "expansion" team?

That's a Cool Idea Like The Other Poster Said Just Make Sure Cap Penalties Are Off and That Will Work Fine.Currently Waiting To Play:

Madden 2002 let you actually do this with the incoming Texans, it was pretty cool.Comment

Good to know this is possible. I'm definitely going to make an expansion franchise now! If only you could realign divisions, but no big deal.Comment

As for ideas for teams and such, I guess it depends on where you want the expansion team to be based. I like to keep the conferences/divisions as accurate as possible, but that's just me. I'm currently trying to decide between London (using the Washington Redskins, with a storyline about how the team is banned after they refused to change the name) or Los Angeles (either using the Raiders or Rams).Comment

Re: Is it possible to do an "expansion" team?
I've done "expansion" teams a few ways, but the most challenging has been to take any team and simulate the first season. When you get to the free agency stage release everyone on your roster. Advance through the free agency period to the draft, don't make any draft trades just pick where ever you ended up.
Leave the players the cpu signs on your roster for at least the first season. Once you get to preseason week 1 you can sign players who are left in free agency. These players tend to all be older or not extremely skilled so you are able to field a team that has the talent level of an expansion franchise.
From there you just have to set house rules for free agency the following season because you will have lots of cap space. One online league I played in set contract scales for players based on their position and overall. The scales were created based on real world salaries and they do force you to make tough roster decisions so they are something I like to implement to make sure I don't build a super team by abusing the poor ai with regards to contracts.Last edited by TheDominator273; 02-14-2016, 03:53 AM.Comment

Re: Is it possible to do an "expansion" team?
Whenever I want to do an 'expansion' team, I'll usually just cut everyone from a team that has a lot of cap space and then sign players that were originally in the F/A pool. I've done this at the beginning of the season or during the offseason and it's worked pretty well.Comment

Re: Is it possible to do an "expansion" team?
I did this a few months ago and it was the most fun I had ever had on the game. Here's the steps I took.
1. The first season has to be simmed to enable you to get the first draft pick.
2. I made rules that every player on the roster had to be through the draft. No free agency, just draft and develop, it made it more challenging, and also nullified the cap penalties as I wouldn't be touching anywhere near the cap for at least four years.
3. Sent every 80+ player on the roster to the trade block.
4. Released the rest.
5. Signed 50-60 rated players to one year deals to fill the roster to ensure I got first pick.
6. In the 2016 draft, you can't trade away the first pick, but you can get another first round pick from trading a top player away from the original roster, so you can use that to trade down many times and pick up multiple first, second and third round picks in future years. Remember it's going to take 4-5 years at least to have an okay roster at least.
7. The game gets very frustrating early on. Make sure that first pick is a QB....there is nothing more frustrating than playing with a 60 rated QB through an entire season.
My record went like this...
0-16
1-15
4-12
9-7
11-5
But it's so satisfying. I hope Madden 17 it's a bit easier, but I doubt it. Have fun.Comment

I wish madden gave us the option of adding an expansion team after the first year. At the start of the first season, you create your team, pick a location, build a stadium, scout, and do what normal expansions teams have to do while the current season is simulating. Then you get the first pick, and you get assigned however many players from all 32 teams (not sure how this process actually works). Then go to town on the free agency, draft, and start the next season like everyone else as your inaugural season.
Of course this means they would have to give us control of editing divisions as well...Comment
