    Need help running the 3-3-5

Does anyone here run the 3-3-5 as their base defense? I've been running the 4-3 for awhile but I'm looking to switch things up. What are your base formations/plays? Who do you look for to play each position? Any tips or ideas are welcomed

I run the 3-3-5 as my base, but I can't give you many tips about players to want, get etc. I can tell you that forms like the bear and stack are my fav. Stack in particular has some good coverages and blitzes and is really good for me. Best thing about the 3-3-5, primarily the stack is that you don't have to send 5 or more to shutdown the run. The box is so clogged even if you run something like a cover 3 (usually my base play), you can limit the run to around 3 yards or so since everyone is in the box. So that's basically the strength of the 3-3-5, powerful against the run even if you aren't blitzing and also it's helps confuse opponents, since you have everyone stacked up in the box, normally they are thinking blitz, and audible to a pass. It has worked well for me.

Thanks for the reply. I did notice that the stack works well against the run while I was labbing the playbook. I'll probably create a custom book with some 3-3-5 and some 4-3. That way if the 3-3-5 isn't working for me I can revert back to the 4-3 which I know and I'm comfortable running

That's what I would do. I ran a 3-4 before running the 3-3-5 so now I have my base as 3-3-5 but if it doesn't work in games I just mix it up with the 3-4.

If you don't mind usering some guys, the 3-3-5 and 4-2-5 give you the ability to recruit lesser skilled but better athletes. Speed in your back 8 can be deadly against the run and pass.

I have ran a 4-2-5 a lot in this game and love it. I look for speed in my front 4, tackle machines at LB, and coverage/speed in my secondary. Others have different views on speed but I think it is the difference. My advice is think about what you want you D to do then recruit based on the skills need to run that type of defense.
