I was really shocked by how well they passed the ball on us. It was so weird seeing my #1 CB Marcus Jackson getting abused by some 78 overall chump. I guess it was just "one of those matchups" and Carrington's rating's combo, on that day, was just the perfect mix to best Jackson.

I will have an update on Johnson III's status later in the week.

Yeah it sucks being out of the national title race yet again, but the sim guy in me loves it. As I have said before, I didn't want this dynasty to just be about winning national titles year after year, so it is refreshing that the CPU is still capable of pulling off shocking upsets against me every now and then. It hurt but felt good at the same time.

It makes those 2 titles I won during the height of this dynasty, with the likes of my old QB Jamie Manning and my Heisman winning RB Reggie Moore, even more revered for me.

It looked like you were severely thrown out of your game plan there at the end in all facets of the game between clock management and not having a ground game to turn to. The injury to Buck was just devastating.

I was surprised to see your secondary get so manhandled. It seems like the perfect storm of miscues, injuries and badness came together.

Hang in there though my friend. You still have the division locked and an SEC title well within reach. Get the win here and some momentum to wrap up the season. You got this.
The funny part about this game is that, even though I normally play my games on Saturdays or early Sunday morning (I play one game a week, just like real life since really that's all I have time for), I decided that for this one, I wanted to try to get the feel of a "short week." So with this being a Thursday game on the video game schedule I decided to play this one on a short-turnaround Thursday in real life.

Usually during the week, I take my time, maybe go to practice mode and do things to learn my opponent. But I purposely rushed this one and quite honestly, it truly felt like a short-week trap game as it was unfolding. I felt unprepared for their offense, and for my own offense, felt like we didn't have much of a game plan going in.

In the end, this game boiled down to 5 things:

1.) Jimmy's first half interception thrown in the end zone with us about to score.

2.) The weather - Our missed 49-yard field goal by my freshman PK Chis Coleman. There was a strong wind, so the weather directly impacted us. It's pretty cool though that my dome team is seemingly struggling in games played in the elements though. That picture of my CB Jackson, with his cold weather gear on, missing that tackle on Carrington really epitomized and captured what it looks like when a dome team goes out and looks out of their element.

3.) Buck Johnson III getting hurt, rendering our running game useless. Which meant we couldn't run clock and also found ourselves in a ton of 2nd and 3rd and longs. Bernie Davis is SO bad; don't know what it is about him.

4.) My linebacker getting hurt, which directly played a part in the game-winning overtime TD.

5.) Jimmy's fourth quarter INTs that led directly to 10 points.

Despite all of that, they still needed OT to beat us. We were lucky we didn't get completely blown out.

All that said, as mentioned before, it's games like this that keep us interested and coming back for more. I hated losing, but really loved seeing that an unranked team could still shock me if I don't come ready for the fight.

Those damn fake punts. it feels like that's what got the momentum ball rolling against you. Then to challenge it and lose your last time out with plenty of time remaining is also tough because you never know when you're gonna go from running out the clock to treasuring every second. Tough loss but great report and as usual one of the finest "stys to be found.

That's really interesting you decided to force yourself into a "short week" too. Those five points you listed can make the game feel very realistic -- sometimes those little things that might not mean a lot at the moment like a turnover/missed FG when you are up by a couple scores and can almost put them away, a linebacker getting hurt, burning a timeout, etc. come back to haunt you.

I totally agree on the "simness" of it all. Once upon a time you/Tulane was the upstart and picking off the giants, now you are the giant that every opponent gets up to face.

In the end, this loss might not actually matter (doesn't make it any easier to swallow though). If two or three schools stay undefeated, you weren't going to play for the title anyways. Still can have a successful season with a win over a rival, an SEC title, and major bowl game.

You're right, and what's crazy is that this was one of those games where at the moment I realized I had exhausted my timeouts, I had a feeling in my gut that I was setting myself up for failure.

I burned the first one because Ryan Jean was fatigued and on the bench for a critical third down play, and since we were up by a good margin already I said "screw it" and called it.

Then the second one was burned by my own mistake....Following an injury timeout, I mistakenly thought it was 4th down and not 3rd down, and I called a punt on third down (I thought about writing this into the report as down-marker officiating error, but the game article was already too long).

It was just a comedy of errors and we reeked of a team that underestimated its opponent and came in sloppy and unprepared on a short week.

I agree completely Mattrd....I'd be shocked if ANY of these teams lose, much less 3 of the top 4. GT-FSU's ACC title game is a guaranteed loss for someone obviously. In the end, I see Oklahoma definitely going undefeated headed into bowl season; it'll be a travesty if they're left out of the title game. And they will face the winner of GT-FSU. I still think Penn St. slips up here over the last couple of weeks.

I really enjoyed the feel of the "short week." I will definitely be trying to do that from now on when I am scheduled for Thursday game, if my real-life schedule allows it of course. That's one thing playing as infrequently as I do that has been a positive. Playing once a week, it feels a lot more like a true pacing of a football season, even though it makes getting through seasons much longer; and in turn, it made playing on a Thursday feel all the more abnormal, just as it would in real life.

Despite picking up the L, that was a very fun game to play. It was one of those games where at the end, I had to stand up and put my hands on my knees with my head down for a good 5-10 seconds in disbelief of what had just happened. What a meltdown - BUT IT WAS FUN TO EXPERIENCE THE LETDOWN.

With all that said, to use the words of Bill Belichik...we're on to Southern Miss.

It is really too bad Eve Jewell doesn't cover more Eastern Michigan games. *Loses train of thought wistfully.....*

I like the signings though. Obi is a very interesting prospect and someone who it will be interesting to watch develop. Carpenter looks fantastic. It is just sad that he is a JUCO. I think he is going to play a big role in your offense as a nice "safety valve" check down. Hicks-Walker I think will actually be a nice number two and possession wide receiver. Your wide receiving corp though is pretty crowded already though so it will be interesting to see where he fits in limited time.

Loving this as always my friend.

As soon as I saw the Ole Miss update and their low ratings, I was like TRAP GAME!

But forreal those dudes you just snagged look like they could be major in your offense, especially the tight ends. most of the playbooks in the game aren't kind to tight ends but if you can find him a role, boy they are matchup nightmares.

I think Carpenter is going to be a beast. I see him very possibly being the starter. Yes it sucks that he is a JUCO, but we were desperate for bodies and we will make the most of him the next two seasons.

I foresee Hicks-Walker being redshirted next year. Our WR position is suddenly pretty stacked. We have Jean coming back, we have the top WR in the nation in Mason inked, and we have a very solid supporting cast of guys already on the team. Our offense for next year is looking nice.

Obi is a nice project QB to have. We are pretty thin at that position after Williams and if he bolts early, we could be in serious trouble. I am toying with the idea of trying to win with one of the lesser QBs after Williams leaves rather than just having great QB after great QB, which isn't all that realistic.

Yeah I definitely would like to get my tight ends more involved. I am actually disappointed that we couldn't find more touches for our current tight end, senior Roger Battle (88 ovr, 90 spd). I only have three more games with that guy, and I feel I owe it to him to get him some more work here down the stretch.

                  Thanks for checking in brother!

RB Buck Johnson III at practice Wednesday afternoon

Tulane | RB Johnson III to see reduced work this week
                    Thu, 26 Nov 2020 9:28:47 -0700

                    report courtesy Britt McHenry, ESPN.com

Britt McHenry of ESPN.com, now based in New Orleans at a condo right next to Tulane's campus, reports that Green Wave head coach D. Geezy indicated to her that RB Buck Johnson III (79 ovr) was limited in practice this week and will be listed as "probable" on the injury report as he is still hindered by a bruised sternum injury sustained in last week's loss to Ole Miss. Geezy further indicated that Johnson III will be on a "pitch count" and senior RB Bernie Davis (85 ovr), now all but officially relegated to a back-up role, will receive the bulk of the carries during their Senior Day game Saturday versus rival Southern Miss.

                    Thu, 26 Nov 2020 9:28:47 -0700
Tammy Nunez of the New Orleans Times Picayune reports that Tulane starting OLB Stephen Young (88 ovr) will miss Saturday's game versus Southern Miss and will be replaced in the lineup by senior OLB Joe Hogan (66 ovr). Hogan, who is one of the Green Wave's top special teams player, will primarily play in the Wave's base 4-3 however the team is expected to deploy mostly nickel and dime packages versus the Golden Eagles' aggressive spread offensive attack. Redshirt senior starting MLB Mario Gilliam (88 ovr) will take the place of Young alongside junior OLB Bret Johnson (91 ovr) in the team's nickel defense.

Game 12, Year 11 Preview (2020 season): Southern Miss at #19 Tulane

                      GAME 12 PREVIEW

                      Courtesy

RIVALRY GAME: THE BATTLE FOR THE BELL

2019: Southern Miss LB Anthony Muhammad picked off former Wave QB Preston Fields' screen pass attempt to RB B.J. Johnson and returned it 27 yards for the game-winning touchdown, making the score 42-35 with just 0:47 remaining.

Last Meeting: Last season in rain-soaked Hattiesburg, Southern Miss erased a 24-14 second half deficit and got a game-winning pick-six from LB Anthony Muhammad with under a minute remaining to defeat then-#7 ranked Tulane 42-35 in their annual "Battle for the Bell" rivalry game. Despite a 454 yard 4-touchdown performance from former Wave QB Preston Fields and a 9 reception 262 yard 3 touchdown performance from true freshman WR Ryan Jean, the Wave faltered in the end, losing to their former Conference USA rivals for the first time since 2010. After being the #1 ranked team in the country all year long and starting the season 9-0, the loss was the Green Wave's second in their final three regular season games of that year.

2018: Tulane QB Jamie Manning finds WR Chris Kane on a short pass and the redshirt junior jukes and spins his way past the defense on the way to a spectacular 45-yard touchdown which gave the Wave a 21-7 lead in the first half.

Last Meeting at Venue: Junior QB Jamie Manning, playing in his final regular season game and final home game as a member of the Green Wave, torched the Southern Miss secondary by going 29 of 36 for 332 yards with 4 touchdowns and no interceptions, as Tulane won a surprisingly close 31-21 game in 2018 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Senior RB Brett Curtis had a big "farewell" game, carrying the ball 16 times for 144 yards while junior LB Larry Branch, also playing in his final regular season college game, notched a career-high 20 tackles. A short touchdown pass from Manning to FB Marcus Young with 7:15 to go provided the Wave with its final 10-point margin of victory.

A condo next to campus for McHenry...as if the scandal with Erin wasn't enough for coach D.Geezy. Man plays with fire...or I guess in this case blondes.

Happy to hear Johnson will play some, even if his workload is limited. Bernie has just been doing nothing lately.

Southern Miss looks surprisingly solid across the board and we all know what happened last season. That halfback of theirs Dougie Cooper looks very good. You definitely don't want to let him find any space. Good luck man!

Hey man, Geezy has no control over where his groupie reporters choose to live.

I will probably give Johnson a good 8 to 10 carries but the bulk of the load will be given to ol' Bernie. I guess it is fitting, with it being Senior Day.

This Southern Miss team looks very good. That running back with 98 speed scares the hell out of me. If he breaks loose, there is no catching him. He could be a factor in the return game as well.

Good o-line, solid front-7 on defense, excellent RB, very good speed at corner - they have everything it takes to beat us for a second year in a row. Looking forward to the challenge!

Game 12, Year 11 (2020 season): Southern Miss Golden Eagles at #19 Tulane Green Wave

RIVALRY GAME: THE BATTLE FOR THE BELL

                            N/R 14 -- 8-4
                            #19 45 -- 10-2

Tulane's offensive scoring binge began when QB Jimmy Williams hit WR Derrick Lindsey deep down the left sideline and the redshirt sophomore spun past not one, but two defenders on his way to a 61-yard touchdown which tied the game at 7-7 in the second quarter.

AFTER SLOW START, #19 TULANE BLASTS THROUGH RIVAL SOUTHERN MISS IN DECISIVE 45-14 VICTORY ON SENIOR DAY

Wave trailed 14-7 in first half before reeling off 38 unanswered points to avenge last season's upset loss to their former Conference USA foes | Surprisingly huge 214-yard day for WR Lindsey helps Green Wave offense explode | CB Hall continues his torrid pace, breaks two more NCAA interception records | Tulane now turns its full attention to SEC Championship Game tilt versus #20 South Carolina

New Orleans, LA -- The Southern Miss Golden Eagles came into the Mercedes-Benz Superdome confident, having defeated arch rival Tulane last season 42-35 in Hattiesburg via a late interception returned for a touchdown by OLB Anthony Muhammad. However on Saturday, after falling behind 14-7, the 19th ranked Green Wave put on a scoring clinic, getting 38 unanswered points en route to a 45-14 blowout victory, avenging last season's defeat. QB Jimmy Williams threw for 338 yards and 3 touchdowns despite only completing 12 passes, boasting a ridiculous 28.2 yards per completion on the day, helping his team clinch their 9th consecutive double-digit win season.

Following a scoreless first quarter, Southern Miss got the scoring started in the second quarter following an interception thrown by Williams to Golden Eagles DE Shedrick Jones deep in Green Wave territory. Southern Miss QB Shannon Wilkerson's 18-yard touchdown completion to WR Markus Shelby on third down gave their team an early 7-0 advantage.

WR Derrick Lindsey hauled in 6 receptions for 214 yards on Saturday, both career-highs, averaging a whopping 35.7 yards per catch.

It didn't take the Green Wave very long at all to answer following Williams' error. A mere twenty seconds following USM's score, Williams hit WR Derrick Lindsey, who was wide open for a deep completion via a "wheel route." The redshirt sophomore would then dazzle the Superdome crowd, showing off amazing yards after the catch ability, spinning past one defender before running and spinning past another, on his way to a spectacular 61-yard touchdown that made the score 7-7. Lindsey, the team's #3 receiver, finished the game with a career-high 6 receptions for 214 yards on the night, and had receptions of 61, 43, and 60 during the contest.

The Golden Eagles (8-4) would come right back down the field as Wilkerson completed two deep passes to set his team up in the red zone. His 22-yard touchdown completion to TE Brett Gould allowed his team to re-claim the lead at 14-7 with 4:35 to go in the half. Wilkerson finished the game 27 of 41 for 354 yards to go along with his 2 touchdown passes, resulting in a second straight poor game for the Wave's vaunted secondary. Wilkerson went 17 of 22 for 255 yards in the first half alone.

"We had a lot of issues today with guys going for interceptions rather than knocking away balls and that led to a bunch of big plays," said Tulane defensive coordinator Steve Ellis.

"Once we pointed this out to our guys and played a little bit more conservatively with less blitzing, things turned around."

Indeed it did, as following their slow start the Wave would bounce back strong the rest of the way, on both offense and defense.

WR Ryan Jean dabbed on 'em following his 67-yard touchdown on a wide receiver screen as Southern Miss LB Anthony Muhammad showed his frustration behind him.
Williams' 67-yard touchdown to WR Ryan Jean on a screen pass tied the game at 14-14 with 1:43 to go until halftime.

After USM freshman PK Jake Armstrong missed a 52-yard field goal with 0:36 remaining until halftime, Williams' aforementioned 43-yard completion to Lindsey set up the Wave at the Golden Eagles 11-yard line with less than :10 seconds to go in the half. Following an incomplete pass attempt to the end zone on first down, PK Chris Coleman's 27-yard field goal with 0:01 remaining gave Tulane a 17-14 lead going into the half.

Williams ended the first half with just 6 completions, however due to the big plays, they counted for 235 yards, which included Lindsey's 164-yard halftime total.

And the second half was all Wave.

On the first possession of the second half, Williams drove his team down the field for a quick score - a 13-yard touchdown pass to WR Jared Reese - which increased Tulane's advantage to 24-14.

Southern Miss would attempt to answer, however Wilkerson would throw his first interception of the game, to Wave superstar CB Nate Hall, who returned it 61 yards for a touchdown that gave his team a commanding 31-14 lead.

The Green Wave would not dent the scoreboard again until late in the fourth quarter. Seldom-used senior RB Chris Maynard, #3 on the team's depth chart and playing due to RB Buck Johnson III's injury that limited him, scored on a 13-yard run which made the score 38-14 with under two minutes remaining.

On the Golden Eagles' very next offensive play, Hall struck again. This time the New Iberia, Louisiana native, rated as the nation's #1 cornerback recruit in 2019, caught another interception and returned it 26 yards for a back-breaking touchdown which put the game away at 45-14. It was Hall's 15th interception on the year, which breaks a record held by former NCAA CB Al Worley (14, Washington, 1968). His second interception return touchdown also broke an NCAA record for most pick-sixes in a season with 5, a record held by former California CB Deltha O'Neal, who had 4 in 1999.

Sophomore nickel CB Nate Hall added two more pick-6's to his assault on the stat sheet this season and broke the NCAA record for interceptions in a single season with his 15th pick on the year and also the record for interceptions returned for touchdowns with his 5th this year.

"This seems to be a theme every week in these postgame press conferences but man, I have truly never seen anything like this from a cornerback, not here, not anywhere," said Tulane head coach D. Geezy.

"The guy is just a magnet. He is shattering team records and NCAA records and he is doing it as a nickel corner. We have never had a cornerback put up these types of numbers; it's amazing - the ball just finds him."

Tulane finishes the regular season with a 10-2 record, 7-1 in SEC play. They will face #20 South Carolina (9-3, 6-2) in two weeks in the 2020 SEC Championship Game in Atlanta, with the Gamecocks coming in having won 9 straight games. The two teams have met in Atlanta twice before, with the Green Wave coming out with a 23-17 win in 2016 and a 35-26 win in 2018, the years they won both of their national championships under Geezy. The stakes won't be quite as high as those years, however Geezy says he will make sure his team understands the importance that still exists.

"We cannot take for granted these opportunities to take home SEC titles," said Geezy.

"We are on quite a run here, with a chance to win an unprecedented 6th straight SEC Championship, which is quite remarkable given the level of competition from top to bottom in our league.

"So yeah, we aren't playing for a chance at a national title, but we are still playing to add another SEC championship ring - this one for our other hand. And of course we are playing for an opportunity to play in our 6th straight BCS bowl game. Our boys will be ready."

Notes: RB Buck Johnson III carried the ball just 7 times for 30 yards as he tries to work his way back from a sternum injury suffered during last week's 38-31 loss to Ole Miss. Geezy indicated that he could have carried the ball more if needed, but he wanted him to be at 100% for next week's SEC Championship Game...Senior TE Roger Battle strained a calf muscle in the first quarter, after he caught a short 4 yard pass, and did not return. Geezy indicated that the injury is not serious at all, and with two weeks to heel, Battle should be a full-go for their next game.

Ducks' 35-28 victory creates chaos - Oklahoma, FSU, and Georgia Tech now all eye spot in national title game | Sooners will face 10-2 Kansas in Big 12 title game | Ubeaten Noles, Yellow Jackets will face off for ACC Championship in what is now a defacto national championship playoff game

Re: Coach Geezy in the Big Easy: Our City, Our Team | Part II - The Golden Age of Tul

Southern Miss did a good job on taking Ryan Jean away, but that attention made it possible for Lindsey to step up and have himself a day.

I am seriously jealous of your defensive backs -- Hall and Palmer seem to be all over the field, shutting stuff down against the pass and the run.

Hopefully you can put an end to South Carolina's nine-game winning streak and claim a sixth straight SEC title. Excited to see how the title picture plays out too!
