Thanks Cheese....you're absolutely right. There really was no drama with any of these awards this time around. Everything seemed to finish just the way it is supposed to.

I really need to find a way to get my guy Jean his 100 catches next season; it will probably be his last opportunity to win a Heisman. Next year will be the Ryan Jean show for sure.

Game 14, Yr. 11 Preview (2020 season): #20 Michigan vs. #24 Tulane - Capital One Bowl

      GAME PREVIEW

      Courtesy

Former Tulane QB Jamie Manning completes a screen pass to then-sophomore RB Bernie Davis and the Louisiana native follows his blockers on the way to a career-long 78-yard touchdown reception which gave the Green Wave a commanding 10-0 lead early in the 2018 BCS title game.

Last Meeting: The undefeated Tulane Green Wave met the undefeated Michigan Wolverines in the 2018 BCS National Championship Game in Glendale, Arizona, and the Green Wave prevailed in a 30-20 victory, winning their second BCS National Championship in three seasons. Former Green Wave star QB Jamie Manning, playing in his final collegiate game, completed 17 of 26 passes for 348 yards and 2 touchdowns on the day. Then-sophomore RB Bernie Davis, who will be playing in his final game in this year's Capital One Bowl, caught 4 receptions for 103 yards and 2 touchdowns while adding 26 yards on the ground. Davis' 17-yard fourth quarter touchdown reception made the score 30-13 and all but put the game away for the Wave, giving head coach D. Geezy his only perfect season to-date during his 11-year tenure in New Orleans.

Tulane true freshman QB Curtis Byrd gets sacked in the end zone by Georgia Tech freshman DE Anthony Williams for a second quarter safety that made the score 15-0 on what was a long day for the Green Wave.

Last Game at Venue: Tulane and Michigan of course have never met in Orlando, however the last time the Green Wave played at Citrus Bowl Stadium came all the way back in the 2011 season, head coach D. Geezy's second year with the Wave and the game marked the team's first ever bowl appearance under his regime. That day, Geezy and his then-unranked squad played in a rain-storm, falling to then-#20 Georgia Tech 25-17, a team they had beaten 27-20 in upset fashion at the Superdome in their regular season finale just a few weeks prior. True freshman QB Curtis Byrd played what was probably the worst game of his rookie season, going just 7 of 12 for 108 yards while throwing 3 interceptions, as the downpour completey hampered the Green Wave's ability to throw the football while the muddy conditions were perfect for the Yellow Jackets' option attack. Geezy's squad finished that year with an 8-5 record, the first of ten straight winning seasons and counting for the Green Wave.

      Head Coach D. Geezy's Take

Tulane head coach D. Geezy addressed the media at his bowl week press conference in Orlando

Michigan is a team we obviously have some history with, having met them two seasons ago in the title game. They run a spread, no huddle offense and can beat you in a lot of ways. Their starting quarterback is out, but the back-up Devon Gilmore has filled in nicely. He's 6-6 with a great arm and is quite an athlete. He is actually listed as their #4 receiver as well and they used him there a lot when their starting QB was healthy. It'll be interesting to see if they show that look to us and put in their third string guy at QB sometimes, particularly in the red zone.

Their running back Donte' Ford is a guy we know a lot about here because he is someone that was VERY heavily recruited by us a few years ago. He's only 5-6 193 and reminds us a ton of former NFL RB Darren Sproles. We actually wanted him to come here to play the Reggie Moore pass-receiving back role but he chose Michigan. I think he would have been a star here and probably would have been in New York last week for the Heisman ceremony, not to mention he'd have won a championship ring a couple of years ago, but oh well for him. Nevertheless, he will be a handful.

We also went very hard after their two starting receivers, Rich Stephens and Mike Johnson, in recruiting as well. They're both fast and have very good hands; they look like Wes Welker and Julian Edelman out there - you know, "blue collar," "lunch pail" types. So it'll be interesting to matchup against this offense.

Defensively, they run both a 4-3 and 3-4 and have an amazing front 7 and an outstanding player at CB in Alfred Marshall. Their left defensive end Thad Calhoun should be a first round pick next year and we have struggled to protect on that side this year, so we have our work cut out there. Their starting free safety though, Drew Watson, who is the son of their DB coach...all I'm going to say is 'no comment.'

We are obviously still miffed that we aren't playing in a bigger bowl but we will make the best of this one. We have some seniors, like RB Bernie Davis and TE Roger Battle, that we'd like to see go out with a bang. And we'd also like to give ourselves some positive momentum heading into the off-season. We haven't finished ranked outside of the top 25 since 2011, and we must win this game to avoid that from happening this season.

      - Tulane head coach D. Geezy

Re: Coach Geezy in the Big Easy: Our City, Our Team | Part II - The Golden Age of Tul

Tough loss to South Carolina, can't believe you didn't convert a third down for the entire game! I know you've mentioned it several times, but still amazing someone other than Tulane or 'Bama finally won the SEC, was bound to happen sometime. 11 years is a long time though, especially in college football.

Regarding Geezy's press conference, I wouldn't have imagined Tulane and Michigan would be going after the same recruits so many times, but I guess once you get to be one of the "big boys" with multiple titles, you're all pretty much going after the same talent.

Hahaha there were parts of your press conference where I was literally laughing out loud, especially at the poke on that free safety. Good gosh, for a team as talented as Michigan, that should never ever happen.

They have a lot of speed, and I think you could easily argue that they have the most talent at the skill positions you have seen all season. Better hope Donte' Ford doesn't make you eat some of those words.

I know we are all a bit let down for your bowl game but I am actually really excited to see this matchup (and it is not just because I am flying home this weekend to visit my parents at the University of Michigan).

          Good luck my friend!

We just kept finding ourselves in thrid and long all game long, either because of sacks or because of the inability to get yards on the ground on early downs. It was really just a bad matchup for us. That D-Line was great.

I am actually kind of happy to see someone else win the SEC. 11 straight between the same two teams was an unbelievable run - we had a lot of luck during our run, needing help from other teams in the final regular season game a couple of times along with some very close SEC title games over the years. So while five straight SEC titles may normally not feel realistic, it did from the standpoint that we had a few miracles happen along the way to get there.

You're absolutely right regarding recruiting. It seems like all of the "big boys" are in on all the same top recruits. I forgot to mention this in the "press conference," but even this year, Michigan signed a top-ranked cornerback from out of our own backyard in Mandeville, Louisiana, blue chipper Kyle Simpson (#3 CB, 4.32 40-yd dash). We came in second place, and I was pretty miffed because we had the lead for several weeks and have some big needs coming up here soon at cornerback, as I am expecting most of our secondary to leave early for the NFL draft.

I may need to get a little Ann Arbor-New Orleans home-and-home contract in the works.

Yeah I don't know what to say about that free safety. He must have some comprimising pictures of SOMEBODY to be starting in that lineup LOL

Ford is going to be a beast to stop. They play that spread offense too so I bet he ends up with quite a few receptions. I am really jealous of them having him. He would be mentioned in the same breath as Reggie Moore if we had nabbed him.

I am actually pretty excited about this matchup as well. It was probably the best possible scenario since it offered so many story lines (BCS title game rematch and our recruiting wars namely). Michigan is also my oldest son's favorite college team, so I am quite attuned to Michigan football here. That's funny that you just so happen to be on their campus when I am about to play them. Your folks work there?

As always, thanks for checking in fellas...Time to go bowling vs. Michigan!

Game 14, Year 11 (2020 season): #24 Tulane vs. #20 Michigan - Capital One Bowl

              #24 47 -- 11-3
              #20 29 -- 8-5

Backed up near his own end zone, QB Jimmy Williams finds WR Joel Ryan for a short completion over the middle. The three-time "Return Man of the Year" award winner then put his kick return skills to use, setting up his blockers and weaving through traffic before turning on the jets on his way to an 88-yard touchdown that made the score 47-22, putting away the Wolverines early in the fourth quarter.

EARLY BIG PLAYS ON 'D' HELPS TULANE CRUISE TO 47-29 VICTORY OVER MICHIGAN IN REMATCH OF 2018 BCS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME PARTICIPANTS

FS Palmer's "option pitch-6" sets the tone for the day as Green Wave amasses big early lead and holds on | Wave defense leaves Wolverines offense bruised and battered, collects 7 sacks, including a safety | Playing in his final collegiate game, RB Davis rushes for a career-high 138 yards and 2 touchdowns, finishing his career in style | QB Williams accounts for 330 total yards and 3 touchdowns, including a spectacular career-long 65-yard touchdown run

Orlando, FL -- The last time the Tulane Green Wave played a postseason game in the state of Florida, it is fair to say that the stakes were significantly higher. Furthermore, the last time the Wave met the Michigan Wolverines, two seasons ago, those stakes were just as high. There was much less fanfare this time however, as the 20th ranked Green Wave marched in to Citrus Bowl Stadium and used a fast start and got several big performances on their way to knocking off #24 Michigan 47-29 in the Capital One Bowl, a rematch of the two teams' 2018 national title game in which the Wave won 30-20. Redshirt sophomore QB Jimmy Williams accounted for 330 total yards and 3 touchdowns, leading the Green Wave to their 5th bowl victory in their last 6 tries.

Senior RB Bernie Davis went off in Friday's game, gaining a career-high 138 yards along with 2 touchdowns, including this season-long 53-yard touchdown run that made the score 26-3 before halftime.

The team also got a huge performance from a surprising source - senior RB Bernie Davis. Davis, who has struggled this season and has been in and out of the lineup and also missed two games due to a suspension this season, had what was perhaps his best game as a member of the Green Wave. The New Iberia, Louisiana native finished the game with a career-high 138 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns on the day, finishing his career off in style.

This visit to the Sunshine State was much different than the day when the Wave claimed their first national championship in school history by way of a late touchdown pass with :02 remaining to defeat Penn St. 29-26. This game wasn't close from the beginning, as the Green Wave ran out to a big lead and the onslaught started early, spearheaded by their defense.

Indeed it all got started for the Green Wave on the Wolverines' opening offensive series. Following starting QB Devon Gilmore's brief exit from the game due to an elbow injury, backup QB Michael Walton came in for one play, and it was a disaster for the redshirt freshman. On the first and only play of his career thus far, Walton ran an option play and his ill-advised pitch to RB Donte' Ford was picked off out of the air by Green Wave FS Lee Palmer and returned 33 yards for a touchdown, giving his team a lightning-fast 7-0 lead early in the contest. Gilmore returned on the Wolverines' very next offensive play.

The scoring got started early for the Green Wave. Subbing in for QB Devon Gilmore, who left the game very briefly with a bruised elbow, backup QB Michael Walton's option pitch attempt was picked off our of the air by Tulane FS Lee Palmer and returned 33 yards for a touchdown, giving the Green Wave an early 7-0 lead.

"Lee read that play the whole way and did what he does, and that's make plays," said Tulane defensive coordinator Steve Ellis.

"He came down on a safety blitz and we defended everything perfectly. Their young QB I guess got caught up in the moment and got nervous and made a bad pitch, plain and simple."

The defensive scoring wasn't done there.

Michigan's next possession would end up with their backs and their own goal line following a holding penalty on Tulane's ensuing kickoff, a sack, and a huge tackle for loss by DE Paul Byrd. On third and long, Gilmore dropped back to pass and was drilled into the turf by Tulane sophomore reserve DL Chad McGuire in the end zone, resulting in a safety that increased the Wave's early lead to 9-0.

Sophomore reserve DE/DT Chad McGuire's sack of QB Devon Gilmore in the end zone resulted in a safety, making the score 9-0 early.
"Give Coach Ellis and those guys a ton of credit," said Tulane head coach D. Geezy.

"They set the tone early and gave us tons of momentum and it felt like Michigan never recovered until it was already too late."

Following the free kick after the safety, Tulane would add a field goal to make the score 12-0. In the second quarter, Davis got going.

Michigan (8-5) was unable to turn FS Drew Watson's interception into points, as PK Dwayne Morris' astonishing 63-yard field goal attempt fell just short of the goal post, leaving the score at 12-3. Two plays later, Davis provided cushion for his team taking a handoff right up the middle 41 yards for a touchdown that increased the Wave advantage to 19-3.

Following a Michigan punt, Davis would burn the Wolverines again, this time for a season-long 53-yard touchdown that gave his team a commanding 26-3 halftime lead. Davis, on his way to his career-rushing performance, had 94 yards and 2 touchdowns on 5 carries - at halftime.

"I am so incredibly happy with the way Bernie played today," said Geezy.

"He'll be the first to tell you that he's had a somewhat rough-go here and didn't live up to the expectation he set out for himself when he first got here. But he put in a great three weeks of practice and he got the hot-hand early so we rode him to victory. I am so very proud of Bernie."

The second half got off to a very poor start for Tulane as KR/WR Joel Ryan coughed up the opening kickoff of the half and it was picked up by Wolverines LB Nicholas Grant and returned for a 15-yard touchdown that made the score 26-9 following a missed two point conversion. Fortunately for the Green Wave, they did not allow the momentum to turn to Michigan's side following the blunder.

On their ensuing possession, Williams directed a 13-play 75-yard drive that lasted 3:23. The drive culminated with a 6-yard touchdown pass to TE Roger Battle that made the score 33-9. Battle, also playing in his final collegiate game, finished the game with 66 yards and a touchdown, coming on a team-high 6 receptions.

Michigan answered right back with a 42-yard touchdown pass from Gilmore to backup RB Tony Turner, who was subbing in the starter Ford, who was in and out of the lineup with multiple injuries throughout the game. However, after once again missing the two-point conversion, it remained a three possession game with the score 33-15.

Tulane (11-3) would once again not allow the door to kick open for Michigan as on its very next possession, Williams put his feet to use. Facing a third and long from his own 35-yard line, the California native dropped back to pass and found no one open and took off running. The redshirt sophomore raced pass defenders and spun past Watson in the open field before diving into the end zone for an electric 65-yard touchdown that made the score 40-15 with 2:31 to go in the third quarter. Williams' sensational run was both a season-long and a career-long and seemingly put the game away for his team. Those pesky Wolverines would not let up however.

Michigan would answer right back once again with a touchdown of their own. To conclude an 11-play drive, true freshman RB Titus Smith, the #1 running back recruit in the nation this past off-season and #3 overall prospect, got the ball on a handoff and raced 33 yards for a touchdown to make the score 40-22 with under a minute to go in the third.

"They have a special offense and even I knew that that first half was an anomaly," said Ellis.

"Once they got going, they were tough to stop, but fortunately our offense kept them from catching up."

And that's exactly what they did.

On Tulane's very next drive, once again, they got a big play to provide cushion between them and their opponent. This time, Williams' short third down completion to Ryan over the middle resulted in an 88-yard touchdown that all but put the game away for their team, making the score 47-22 in the fourth quarter. Ryan finished with a game-high 106 receiving yards as #1 receiver Ryan Jean was kept in check most of the day by Michigan superstar CB Alfred Marshall, who held him to just 2 catches on the day.

Senior OLB Stephen Young's fourth quarter sack was one of a season-high 7 on the day for coordinator Steve Ellis' defensive unit.

The Green Wave defense would allow another touchdown pass on the Wolverines' next possession, this one a 53-yarder from Gilmore to TE Mark Wright, but after that would put the clamps down and not allow another score.

Despite surrendering 441 yards to Michigan's offense, the defense was the key catalyst of the day for the Wave. The unit finished the game with a season-high 7 sacks to go along with the early points they put on the scoreboard and gave Geezy's squad just the start they needed to hold off the Wolverines once they got going.

"This was a wild game and it felt like these guys just would not go away," said Geezy.

"We got big plays early from the D. And then when the D faltered, Williams, Davis and the company got going on offense to keep them at bay.

"This was a great team win and a great way to end the season. Yes we wish we were playing in a bigger game than this, but this game today will help us grow. Sometimes you got to get knocked down in order to raise yourself back up and show you can thrive even in the face of adversity, and we felt we did that today."

Junior FS Lee Palmer stops and poses for the camera after making a big stop behind the line of scrimmage on third and 1 in the second quarter.

The Tulane defense celebrates DE Chad McGuire's first quarter sack for a safety that made the score 9-0 early.

Junior CB Marcus Jackson jumped in front of Michigan WR Mike Johnson to intercept a pass in the red zone in the first half.

QB Jimmy Williams ended his season-long 65-yard touchdown run with an emphatic dive into the end zone.

Senior TE Roger Battle finished with a team-high 6 receptions and a touchdown in what was his final game at Tulane. This
25-yard third down reception was the last catch of his career and gave his team a first down with just over three minutes to go.

Junior DE Paul Byrd's fourth quarter sack jarred the ball loose and gave him a team-high 10 sacks on the season.

Junior return man extraordinaire Joel Ryan watches the confetti rain down following the conclusion of the game.

Fantastic just fantastic, all of it.

Before I launch into my feedback, yes my dad is a department chair at Michigan. I have no allegiance to the school personally and funny enough he is a Michigan State alum but my folks live outside of Ann Arbor now so I find myself in that neck of the country frequently.

Great win over Michigan, you really took control in the first half and they could never recover from that. I was a little surprised, well a lot surprised to see Donte Ford be such a non-factor for the Wolverines. It sounds like he was nursing injuries off an on though throughout. Really nice game out of Bernie and like you something I was happy to see. He has had an up down career here especially this season but nice to see him end it all on a high note.

As far as presentation, I love the little things you are doing with this, the pictures with the bowl games, the photo galleries, all of it is just fantastic and continues to add so much life to this already very organic report. Dang Charles Kelly...I am sure he is laughing good about where he finished the season. It is okay, your time will come before long again. I will say at 11-3 I am actually surprised to see you finish as low in the polls as you did.

Moving on to the offseason, the thing I am most curious to watch is what direction your ground game will take. Do you imagine it staying by committee or are you pegging Buck to take on a true lead back role.

Loving this as always my friend. Can't wait to read more!

Thanks BookWork! I didn't even realize the significance of the PSU-Oregon matchup until the game pointed it out with one of its ESPN headlines referring to the Nittany Lions avenging their regular season loss. Nice touch by EA.

Hey Cheese...great to see you back on the forum. Hope your trip to visit your folks went well.

Appreciate the compliment on the pics. I'd say my favorite one is the pic of the safety celebration. It really captured the moment, especially with my DE Roy Williams in the background giving the safety signal. I had never seen that before.

Donte' Ford was literally in and out of the game the entire way. It was really crazy just how much we kept injuring him, but with him being just 5-6 193 pounds, I guess that's a tad realistic. I am glad too, because when he was in there, he was breaking runs for good gains.

Charles Kelly winning the national title at FSU could not have been scripted any better. I didn't get a chance to report it during the season, regrettably, but I plan to wrap up our "home and home" contract with FSU this upcoming season. We played them in Tallahassee back in 2018 (a come-from-behind 20-17 opening day victory) and will try to schedule them to play at the Dome this upcoming season. That game suddenly has way more flare to it, given Kelly being there as well as them now being the defending champs.

As far as the running game - This will be the Buck Johnson show. He will be the feature back and carry the bulk of the load. I have a juco transfer fullback named Eric Harrell coming in this year and I'd like to, for once, have a fullback that gets involved with the offense, both as a runner and receiver. I envision he and Buck as the two bruisers and we have a young sophomore back named Greg Pierce who has 93 speed that we will try to use in the passing game as a change of pace/third down back, on occasion.

This is a critical off-season for us. We have to hit some homeruns in recruiting because we are close to spiraling downward (and that downward trend just surprisingly gained even more momentum, as you'll see in my next news article). We even lost a prestige star after this past season, going from a 6-star prestige to a 5-star.

Thanks again for the great feedback as always!

Williams' unexpected departure leaves Tulane scrambling.

Tulane | QB Williams to enter 2021 NFL draft
                                Thu, 14 Jan 2021 9:27:05 -0700

                                report courtesy Erin Andrews, FoxSports

Erin Andrews of Fox Sports reports that Tulane starting QB Jimmy Williams (90 ovr) informed head coach D. Geezy this morning that he will forgo his remaining two seasons of eligibility and enter the 2021 NFL Draft. Williams, a redshirt sophomore from Campbell, California, threw for 3,850 yards along with 32 touchdowns and 16 interceptions this past season while also rushing for 243 yards and 4 touchdowns in what was his only season as the team's full-time starter after missing most of 2019 due to injury.

"Jimmy was informed by the NFL's draft advisory committee that he will carry a late first, early second round draft grade and he has elected to move forward for personal reasons," said Geezy via telephone to Andrews.

"Needless to say, we are shocked by his decision. We were really building this team around him and were set for a big year next year with he and (wide receiver) Ryan Jean both returning. This is a stunner; but after about the 22nd time of seeing his 65-yard touchdown run from the bowl game on SportsCenter this week, we had a feeling the NFL would come calling."

With the team's backup quarterback, Antoine Atkinson (77 ovr), also set to depart this off-season due to graduation, it leaves just one quarterback on the team's roster from last season - Texas native Sam Weaver (77 ovr), who will be going into his redshirt junior season and has yet to play a single snap for the Wave.

The team's 2021 recruiting class has only one commitment thus far at the quarterback position, 3-star Louisiana prospect Obi Clemons.

"Needless to say, quarterback is suddenly a priority for us this off-season," said Geezy.

"We are ready to move forward with Sam but we will definitely be searching hard these last few weeks here of recruiting for some more competition at the position. Hopefully we can land another player or two."
