I have a confession to make: I don't finish games..

I have a confession to make. I don't finish games. Or not very often anyways. I often buy games and don't play them enough to get my moneys worth. I'd like to think it all balances out but it probably doesn't. But that's just how I roll. And since I got married my wife has gotten me a LOT better about not spending a lot of money on games I won't finish. I went from probably 15-20 games per year to about 8-10 per year. The rest I rent. And yes sometimes I keep them way longer than I should as I just sometimes am not "in the mood" to play a game and I simply let it sit there, unopened.

I asked myself why I am so bad at finishing games and there's a few reasons for that.

First, and probably most importantly, I have gamers ADD. I don't have the commitment usually to finish one thing before moving on to something else. If a game doesn't really hook me in the first couple of times playing it chances are I may never play it again unless it is to just show it to a buddy. Game that hook me, like Diablo, The Division, Gran Turismo, Ryse, Forza (the main games not the Horizon ones) etc usually get a huge amount of play time for me.

I used to be able to say that about football, when NCAA was out, but now that its just Madden I play it usually some during the football season and thats about it. I think I play FIFA more than Madden. I used to wonder, what is wrong with Madden? Well not so sure there's anything wrong with it, when I play it I really enjoy it, but nothing really compels me to play it so it doesn't get played often.

Second, I'll make a startling confession that will only startle those who don't know me. Despite being a long time gamer I'm just not very good at games. Oh sure I can blame it on my propensity to imbibe adult beverages or my eyesight and hearing, or even my age (I am 46 now) but I must confess, in the spirit of confessing, that its really none of that. They all probably serve to make me a shade worse but even when I was young I was turning the controller over to a friend asking me to "get me through this level" so yeah...

And lastly, and this is also very important. I lack patience to get through the "boring" parts. Or in many cases I lack patience to simply get through a game where I don't know what the hell I'm supposed to do to advance. You see I'm not a mind reader and sometimes it is not quite obvious that I should move the third rock from the left, then drain some water and climb up to the third floor to access the next level. If I was stuck in a cave in that situation for real I'd be the guy whose skeletal remains were found 47 years later.

Thankfully game developers have started making these sequences a bit easier with clues showing up on where you're supposed to go, or outright hints that are told to you. I hear a lot of gamers getting all angry about those things and saying it makes the game too easy but I say buzz off! If you don't like the feature then show some damned self control and don't use it.

I realize I don't finish a lot of the games that I play but I'm still in love with gaming. And it makes it better for me and those like me that many games are "dumbing down" their games, or as the developers like to say "making them more accessible" to those who work for a living and don't have the time, patience or commitment to really dedicate to a game.

So the next time you think a game is too easy, think of me. The next time you think a game is too short, think of me. I'm the guy who the rewind button in Forza was invented for. And I'm not afraid to admit it!

Totally. I had to stop this behavior. Since November I've only purchased Fallout 4. I also own AC: Syndicate and Halo 5, but got those when I was trading in my Xboxes to fix hard drives.

I mostly only play on weekends at this point, so I'm making myself play through Fallout 4, got the DLC, and just enjoying that. It's got the ability to save any time, along with awesome story quests to go out and follow. Enough to satisfy my single player desires.

I can't afford to waste money on things I don't play anymore.

Yah man... guilty here as well. A big part of it is just being a grown up and not having time. I still buy games like I'm in high school or college but do so with the time constraints of an adult. As a result, many a game goes unfinished. Sucks

Like Blue, I've had to really force myself out of the habit of buying and into the reality of patience and selection.

Re: I have a confession to make: I don't finish games..

I've recently come to the conclusion, and therefore an internal calm, that because as you have all mentioned, I'm an adult with responsibilities, a job, kids and a wife, etc etc. And that conclusion is that that I still love gaming, and many a game that I purchase will go unfinished. The experience of playing each game, whether it gets finished or not, regardless of time exhausted, is the payoff I will be satisfied with going forward. Not worrying myself with an ever-growing list has made me feel better.

Before this generation, I told my wife I was only going to have one game unfinished at a time, and wouldn't purchase another until that happened. Well, that didn't last too long as eventually the glut of releases and wanting to experience those different worlds/sports/etc. won out over seeing a game out to its finale.

I'm at ease with this mindset because it's allowed me to not feel burdened by this long list of games that go unbeaten, rather, I'm able to dabble if I want or take a deep dive if the game lives up to it (currently The Division and The Show have given me that deep dive desire).

Re: I have a confession to make: I don't finish games..

The key for me is buying disc for games I know will be beaten within a week or two and can trade it.

Games I download which is most of them I only beat if the game is good.

Games I have but never beat

Wolfenstein (I try to get into it but just cant for some reason)
Evil Within (I still want to beat it but never seem to get into it)
COD BO3 Campaign (First time in COD history did not bother with it)
Infamous Second Son (Bored me to death after a few days)
            Destiny (Bored me)
            Division (Bored me)
            MGS 5 (Bored me)
            Far Cry 4 (Bored me)
            Primal (Bored me)

Games I beat and loved it

Witcher 3 (Beat it on both ps4 and xb1 and dlc)
Last of US (Remastered beat 2 times)
GTA 5 (Beat it on PS4 and now playing on XB1)
Bloodborne (Beat it 4 times) Got Platinum on game and DLC)
The Order 1886 (Did not love it but beat it in 7 hours)

            Games i play most

Madden I play every game on nfl schedule as I control all 32 teams with accurate rosters and injuries. Takes me a full year to finish

NBA 2K (Season mode just one team one season takes me a few months

The SHow (Play 162 game season but never get past 100 games)

I beat 99% of the games I buy. But then again I tend to only buy games that I know for a fact will interest me and not just buy games just because everybody on OS have it. I know what I like and know what I don't like. Only games I haven't beaten were The Witcher 3 (got bored to death and the game wasn't as good as I thought it would be) and The Division. I plan on beating The Division though just don't have the time for it.

I think I'm even worse than you, Odogg. I buy games then never even play them. My problem is that I get sucked into sports games and want to keep my franchise going every time I turn on my console.

I bought Rise of the Tomb Raider, The Order: 1886 and both Wolfenstein games on Black Friday and have only started Tomb Raider. Around Christmas I played it for probably 4 or 5 hours and haven't had the desire to play it again since. Hell, I bought Shadow of Mordor during a BF sale in 2014 and haven't played it yet either.

... and the bad thing is I'm already looking forward to games like Uncharted 4 and Mafia III. Which those or two of my favorite franchises so I'm sure I will play them, but those other games will continue to be on the back-burner.

Re: I have a confession to make: I don't finish games..

I was like this last generation but the majority were XBLA/PSN games that I didn't finish. A few retail games but total, over 20 games.

This generation though has been the complete the opposite. Thus far, I only have three PSN/Indies games that I haven't even started yet. Disc wise, none even though I still want to give MGSV another chance but I'll way for it to hit the $20 mark.

I simply don't want to be like I was last generation where while I'll complete a good amount of games, I end up having more games that I didn't complete. Thus far, I have completed 26 games this generation where as last generation was 40 games total so im definitely at a far better pace than I was last generation but one thing that helps with this is the elimination of sports games. I'm too picky with them and if they aren't what I want them to be, I spend way too much time trying to fix them instead of playing them and honestly, it's just not worth investing my time doing that.

I also don't play more than one game at a time because if I do, I then tend to not finish either game and for me personally, that's simply unacceptable. One thing is for sure, my backlog will always only consist of PSN/Indie games simply because they're digital and obviously not going anywhere. And with Salt and Sanctuary, Alienation, Shadow of the Beast and Stories: Path of Destinies either already available or coming soon, that backlog of digital games will only get bigger.

But disc based games, no way. Next up for me is Uncharted 4 and once that's done, it will be on to Homefront: The Revolution.

I try my best to stop buying digital games that I won't end up playing due to disc based games. Sadly, even now waiting for Uncharted 4, im tempted to buy Stories and Salt and Sanctuary since I have credit at GameStop that I want to use and PSN credit as well but at the same time, I don't want to spend $15 and $18 respectively because I know that in time, the games will be on sale for less than that. UGH. Decisions, decisions. LOL.

The Old Blood is good but declined in the second part of it. The New Order however is very good and arguably the best FPS this generation despite it being cross gen. You should try getting back into it.

Evil Within (I still want to beat it but never seem to get into it)I played and completed this game twice back to back and while the game definitely has some negatives, it's by far and away the best action survival horror game since RE4. Definitely worth playing especially with the sequel being rumored to appear at Bethesda's E3 press conference.

Division (Bored me)Can understand being bored by it but I love pure third person cover based shooters and Division game me my fix for that. What an awesome game.

Far Cry 4 (Bored me)FC 4 was the first game this generation that I gave a 9/10 to. Gameplay is excellent and the double turn of the characters in the story make it better than FC 3. Vaas overall was better than Pagan Min but once you finish the story, you can see that Pagan Min was far more important as far as the story goes.

Primal (Bored me)Turn off the majority of the HUD. That will add so much to the game's immersion and feel to it. If you're more into hunting and stealth than shooting, Primal is excellent. If you prefer shooting, I can definitely see you getting bored.

The Order 1886 (Did not love it but beat it in 7 hours)

The above is what im trying to stop doing. While waiting for Uncharted 4, I thought about buying ACIV Black Flag, Mad Max, The Order, The Last of Us Remastered, etc. just to have a game that will make the next few weeks go by but I decided against all of them because I already completed each game at least once, twice for Black Flag and three times for TLOU (including once on PS3) and I just don't want to waste my time playing games that I have already completed. Every time I replayed a game, as much as I enjoyed it, I would always get bored because I obviously know everything that's going to happen and simply want a game that I haven't played so I don't know what's going to happen. You play and enjoy the above games so much that other games just aren't doing it for you. Once you get past that eventually, you should hopefully be able to play games that you haven't completed without getting bored.

I realize those who play sports games all the time simply don't have the interest in other games because they're hooked to the sports games. I know because I used to be the same way. I missed out on so many games generations ago because of sports games but last gen, I finally said, enough is enough. Time to play the other good games that im missing.
Just wanted to comment (bolded) on those games NY. Hopefully, the next game you play won't bore you.

Re: I have a confession to make: I don't finish games..

I think I am so hell bent on finishing games is because of the way I grew up and the era I grew up in. During the 1980s and early half of the 1990s games didn't coming out every week. Hell didn't come out every month. Most games back then only came out during the Christmas season. I remember as a child I use to only get 2 games a year, on my birthday and 1 for Christmas. And my parents wouldn't let me get another game until I beat the one I already had.

Fast forward to my late 30s, that mindset stuck with me. Grant it now games don't have long story lines like they use to back in the 1990s so now on average it takes me a day or two to beat majority of the games that come out now. I remember back in the day instruction manuals use to be 40 pages or more.

I don't buy that many games a yr just Madden, WWE.

I know some ppl who go out and buy every single game that's the IT game and buy the game book and beat the game in hr.

I will buy uncharted 4 this yr so my game total with bump up to 3 this yr.

Most games I own I haven't finished myself either.

I buy games like Halo 5 and Quantum Break, put an hour into them and never play them again.

Meanwhile I have hundreds of hours into Diablo 3 and Rocket League.

Everyone has a different idea these days as to what beating a game even is. How does one beat a game like The Division? Play through the main missions once solo? Do them all co-op, and then on hard? Do all side missions? Find/watch/listen to all the story collectibles? Platinum trophy?

Each one of those questions is a "beat the game" moment for somebody and it's different for everybody. For me it used to be platinum, for others it's finish the main story missions. Now it's somewhere in between for me. I do more than just the main missions once, but I rarely strive for platinum anymore unless I REALLY enjoy the game and want to experience more things the devs wanted us too (I think that's what a lot of trophy lists make us go out to experience and accomplish). I gave up trying to keep up or compare with others a long time ago. It's my money and I'll play games how I wanna play them. Now I consider my games are beat once they start collecting dust.

I do fall for hype trains sometimes still and am working on that problem. I've got stuck into buying/playing games in the past just because friends have and then since they play games like it's their job I'm left in the dust under leveled, unable to play at the same level, kicking myself for falling for it again.
