    Green Wave News Clips

RB Tompkins (LEFT), TE Parsons (MIDDLE), and CB Harrison (RIGHT)

Tulane | Trio dines with Tulane brass

    report courtesy Eve Jewell, TulaneInsider.com

Eve Jewell of TulaneInsider.com reports that though the team had a total of 10 recruits in town for last week's big victory versus LSU, the Tulane Green Wave rolled out the red carpet for three players in particular - 4-star Florida RB Tony Tompkins (5-11, 204, 4.30 40 time, #9 rated RB), 5-star Louisiana TE Ronnie Parsons (6-5, 225, 4.74 40 time, #1 rated TE), and 4-star Texas CB Tyler Harrison (6-2, 174, 4.46 40 time, #3 rated CB).

The trio of recruits were treated to dinner Friday night at Morton's Steakhouse and were joined by Wave head coach D. Geezy and other offensive coaching staff members along with former Wave RB Reggie Moore and Moore's wife, reality TV star Kendall Jenner. Moore's Jacksonville-London Jaguars squad was on their bye week, and Geezy decided to bring the 2017 Heisman winner and 2019 Super Bowl MVP in to try to help lure their most coveted recruits.

Both Tompkins and Parsons were reportedly heavily leaning towards signing with South Florida and Boise St., respectively, however following the weekend's events, both players gave Tulane "soft verbal" commitments. Harrison is also leaning heavily towards signing with the Green Wave, according to Jewell's sources.

According to a source very close to Jewell, "but not that close," Tompkins is the #1 rated player on Tulane's recruiting board and the staff views him as a very similar versatile running back in the mold of Moore, as he boasts elite route running skills after spending time at wide receiver early in his high school career.

Tulane | WR Lindsey getting first team reps
    Thu, 30 Sep 2021 09:43:09 -0700
Tammy Nunez of the New Orleans Times Picayune reports that redshirt junior WR Derrick Lindsey (77 ovr, 92 spd) appears to be the team's new starting receiver, replacing injured star WR Ryan Jean (95 ovr, 97 spd), who is expected to miss three games due to his strained back injury. The team's #4 receiver prior to Jean's injury, Lindsey will start alongside true freshman WR Jason Mason (79 ovr, 92 spd), who will move into Jean's "X" receiver spot while true freshman WR Brandon McInyre (79 ovr, 90 spd) will remain in the #3 role.

"B-Mac is a guy we feel is more effective in the slot and we'd like his role to remain the same," said Tulane offensive coordinator Steve Spurrier Jr.

"Derrick is a guy that has contributed for us in the past, he's a veteran, and he'll help make these next few weeks go smoothly."

Lindsey had 29 receptions for 605 yards and 3 touchdowns last season as the team's #3 receiver. His numbers have dropped this season, as he has only 6 receptions for 112 yards, playing as the #4 receiver. His biggest game came in the team's 2020 regular season finale versus Southern Miss, a game in which he hauled in 6 receptions for 214 yards and 1 touchdown in a 45-14 home victory.

Return specialist Joel Ryan will be elevated up to the #4 receiver spot.

Tulane | Tulane, Florida St. finalize new home-and-home contract, set to begin next fall
    Thu, 30 Sep 2021 08:16:09 -0700
Tammy Nunez of the New Orleans Times Picayune reports that after weeks of negotiations, Tulane University has finally filled one of its remaining scheduling vacancies by adding Florida St. to the 2021 slate. The team will travel to Tallahassee for the first time since the 2018 season, where the Green Wave defeated the Seminoles 20-17 in that year's season opener. The year for game two of the contract, to be played at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, will be announced at a later date.

Tulane and Florida St. met in this year's season opener, a game the Wave won 26-14 over the defending 2020 national champions at home.

The Green Wave will face both Virginia Tech and Southern Miss at home next season, and have one more road game opening on their 2022 out of conference schedule.

Huge win over a really good LSU team. The true freshman QB has been productive for you this season. But now we'll have to see what he can do without his number 1 receiver. Keep up the good work!

Thanks man....He was the #1 rated wide receiver recruit in the nation this past off-season and I figured now is the time to go ahead and throw him into the fire as the go-to guy. I hope he can provide at least half of what Jean does for us.

Yes this will be an interesting 3-game road test for the true frosh...there have been so many games as of late in which we were struggling and basically had to rely on throwing a deep jump ball up to Jean in order to jump-start things on offense and get the momentum rolling. That security blanket being gone now is such a big blow. If we get down or sputter offensively, we can find ourselves in some trouble against any of these upcoming three opponents.

Thanks for checking in fellas...I really appreciate you guys continuing to follow along and taking the time to check in with great feedback!

Game 6, Year 12 Preview (2021 season): #6 Tulane Green Wave at Georgia Bulldogs

            GAME 6 PREVIEW

            Courtesy

2020: Then-junior WR/KR Joel Ryan, considered by most to be the best return man in college football, did his thing last year versus Georgia, returning this kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown that made the score 14-3 in the first quarter.

Last Meeting: Former Green Wave QB Jimmy Williams threw for 205 yards and 3 touchdowns in just a little over two quarters of action as then-#7 ranked Tulane blew away Georgia 52-17 last season at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Former Wave RB Bernie Davis finished with 118 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns in a game in which Tulane amassed a 52-3 third quarter lead before pulling all of its starters.

2016: On the game's very first play from scrimmage, Tulane star RB Brett Curtis follows his blockers and races 92 yards for a career-long touchdown run, giving the Green Wave an early 7-0 lead.

Last Meeting at Venue: In game six of the 2016 season, head coach D. Geezy's then-12th ranked Green Wave recorded the first and only shutout of his career in New Orleans to-date, ousting then-18th ranked Georgia 40-0 that season in rain-soaked Athens. The star for the Green Wave that day was RB Brett Curtis, who ended the game with 136 rushing yards on just 10 carries, including a 92-yard touchdown run on the game's first offensive play. Curtis' legs were needed that day, as Wave star QB Jamie Manning struggled versus the Bulldogs' 3-4 defense, throwing for just 183 yards and tossing 4 interceptions on the night. The win improved Tulane's record to 5-1 on their march to the school's first of two BCS National Championships during Geezy's 12 seasons with the team.

Re: Coach Geezy in the Big Easy: Our City, Our Team | Part II - The Golden Age of Tul

Sorry it took me so long to respond my friend. Life in the clinic never slows down sometimes. I was on call from 5pm-8am this morning so sleep is becoming more of a luxury these days.

A fantastic win over LSU. The defense really came to play and the turnovers were huge. It really just goes to show how far the team has come when you are rolling over schools like LSU on a regular basis.

Losing Jean hurts a lot and I am worried about seeing a drop off from Allen. That is a lot of young players out there and like you mentioned, no real safety net anymore. Good thing they have coach Geezy to hold everything together.

LOVE the extra articles on recruiting. Tompkins looks like an absolute superstar and the next Reggie Moore in the making (although there will never be another Reggie in my eyes). Also nice addition with Kendall Jenner. Moore is doing well for himself.

Looking at Georgia, I am really not seeing anything special outside of Hodges at tailback. I am actually quite surprised at how much they have seemingly dropped off as a program. Good luck! I love this my friend, really do. Nothing better than coming to read this and work on my own projects.

No problem brother...I know how busy life can get.

I'm worried about Allen with the loss of Jean. His stats will likely be impacted, not having that big play waiting to happen out there anymore and especially on the road.

Appreciate the compliments on the articles. I'm really excited about Tompkins and the tight end Parsons. If we can land the two of them, we will be golden here these next few seasons. Tompkins, on paper, looks like Reggie Moore-lite. He has C- route running and there are a bunch of RB motion plays where the RB motions out to WR to run routes; getting a back like Tompkins has been a priority.

Georgia looks decent on paper and has actually improved a good bit since last season. Their D especially looks legit and with that RB of theirs, they have a chance to keep things close as long as they don't turn it over.

Looking forward to the challenge.....time to fire up the game!

Game 6, Year 12 (2021 season): #6 Tulane Green Wave at Georgia Bulldogs

                  #6 26 -- 6-0 (4-0)
                  NR 03 -- 2-3 (1-3)

Tulane CB Nate Hall's 10-yard interception return for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter made the score 23-3 and essentially put the game out of reach. The pick, which was his second of the game, also gave him 29 on his career, a new FBS record.

TULANE 'D' SHUTS DOWN GEORGIA, LEADS GREEN WAVE TO 26-3 VICTORY IN ATHENS

Record-breaking CB Hall leads the way as Wave forces five turnovers while holding Bulldogs out of end zone | Tulane offense struggles to move the football without injured star WR Jean, finishes with worst yardage output since 2015 season | QB Allen throws for fewer than 300 yards for first time in his collegiate career | Team must figure out how to generate offense with huge out of conference road matchup versus #19 Virginia Tech next on the slate

Athens, GA -- The #6 ranked Tulane Green Wave nearly did not score a single offensive touchdown, however they were able to force several Georgia mistakes on their way to defeating the Bulldogs 26-3 on Saturday "Between the Hedges." Playing for the first time since the 2018 season without superstar WR Ryan Jean, who was out nursing a back injury, the Green Wave offense struggled to move the football versus the Bulldogs' ferocious 3-4 defense, finishing with a season-low 235 yards of total offense. It was the worst offensive yardage output in a game for the Wave since 2015, which came perhaps not coincidentally in a 24-14 victory versus Georgia that season at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome - a game in which another Tulane star player, 2017 Heisman winning RB Reggie Moore, was injured early and did not play the majority of the contest. That day, the team only had 193 yards of offense, the worst ever yardage output under Tulane head coach D. Geezy.

QB Bryce Allen and the Tulane offense were stuck in neutral most of the game Saturday. Georgia DE Joe Williams was a big reason why, spending most of the day in the Green Wave backfield and finishing with 2 sacks on the day.

Like that fall Saturday six years ago, Tulane was only able to score one touchdown offensively, and, like that game, it came following a turnover deep in Bulldogs territory. After PK Chris Coleman's 29-yard field goal increased the Green Wave's lead to 9-3 with 1:20 to go in the third quarter, a score setup by a 32 yard punt return by Joel Ryan into Bulldogs territory, disaster struck for the Georgia.

On the ensuing kickoff following Coleman's field goal, one of four on the day for the sophomore, Bulldogs RB/KR Mark Hodges was blasted by Tulane freshman reserve LB Chaz Perkins and freshman backup FS LeCharles Smith Jr. recovered the ball and returned it down to the 1-yard line before being tackled. One play later, QB Bryce Allen found junior FB Eric Harrell for a short touchdown pass which made the score 16-3 with just under a minute to go in the third quarter. Allen, a blue chip true freshman that had thrown for over 300 yards in each of his first 5 starts, finished Saturday just 16 of 29 for 170 yards and 1 touchdown.

"We had some success through the air early and to be very honest with you, I'm not so sure I'd characterize Bryce as having 'struggled' today," said Tulane head coach D. Geezy.

"Sure we missed the big play element that Jean brings and had some protection issues versus the odd man front, however I think the flow of the game dictated the pace we played at and we chose to play somewhat conservatively, especially once we went up double digits and it became apparent that they couldn't move the ball against our defense.

"That said, it's still very concerning anytime your 10-play opening possession field goal was the only score of the day that didn't come directly off a turnover or big special teams play. No question, we have work to do."

Tulane CB Nate Hall caught two interceptions on Saturday, giving him 29 during his stay in New Orleans and moving him to #1 all-time in FBS career interceptions.
The game would get put away early in the fourth quarter. With his team backed up near its own goal line, Georgia QB Wayne Wise left the game due to a chest injury he suffered after being clobbered by two Wave defenders while throwing a pass. Backup QB Michael Anderson would come in, and on his very first play threw a short pass that was intercepted by Wave CB Nate Hall and returned 10 yards for a touchdown that increased the Tulane lead to 23-3.

The interception was one of two on the day for Hall, who both tied and broke the NCAA record for career interceptions with his pair of interceptions on Saturday, which gave him 29. The previous record, held by former Oregon DB Mike Watkins (1950-1952) had stood for nearly 70 years.

Hall, who was the the nation's #1 high school cornerback recruit out of New Iberia, Louisiana in 2019, also increased his NCAA career interception return touchdown record to 9 and has 10 total touchdowns in his collegiate career.

Georgia (2-3), clad in their all-black helmets and jerseys they debuted this season as their new permanent uniform, finished with just 243 offensive yards and a total of 5 turnovers (3 interceptions, 2 lost fumbles).

"We didn't really do anything special other than just execute the game plan and we got good pressure while also sticking to their receivers like glue," said Tulane defensive coordinator Steve Ellis.

"Their quarterback Wise came into today having not thrown an interception this year and we got 2 off of him as well as 1 off his backup, and we netted 13 points off those turnovers - a touchdown and two field goals. The offense didn't have its best day but we showed we're more than capable of picking up the slack if need-be."

Tulane (6-0) will travel next week to face #19 Virginia Tech (4-1) at Blacksburg. It will be the two teams' first meeting since the 2015 Sugar Bowl, a game Tulane won over the Hokies 38-21 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome to earn its first ever BCS bowl victory

Plays at the goal line were rare on Saturday for both teams' offenses. This one was set up by a Georgia special teams turnover.

Junior FB Eric Harrell's 1-yard third quarter touchdown reception would end up being the only offensive touchdown of the day for both teams.

Junior TE Steve Carpenter's 40-yard reception early in the game was Tulane's biggest play of the afternoon and helped set up a 1st quarter field goal.

Freshman QB Bryce Allen had trouble finding passing lanes versus the Bulldogs defense and DE Joe Williams stayed in his face all game long.

Well it's safe to say that Jean is the X-factor for this offense now. Hopefully the defense can keep this type of play going until he comes back. Good win, now get VT.

Solid win over Georgia. As you touched on briefly, I am actually not as concerned about the offensive output as the stat line may initially read. It felt like you played a pretty conservative gameplan and Georgia has a pretty good defense. The team will adjust to life without Jean and you still have plenty of weapons to stretch the field.

Big week coming up for you against my Hokies along with so many of the top five facing each other. You have a chance to really climb the polls.

Try not to beat up too badly against my boys from Virginia Tech :P

Loving this as always my friend.

PS I was happy to see the fullback get some love. I know he was a prospect you were pretty excited about.

Thanks Bookworm! This defense is looking nice and making us very tough to beat.

Agree...it was disheartening to see how lost we are as an offense when we can't just throw the ball up to Jean whenever we need a big play. But as most of you know about me by now, the sim guy in me loves the challenge. I think we ran into a very good defense though and that 3-4 alignment has always given us fits.

There is no doubt however, we will need to play better to knock off VT.

Absolutely huge week. It has been a long time since I have been this excited for a weekly sim.

When I get around to posting the game preview in the next day or so, you will see that this VT team is pretty impressive. They're definitely one of the most talented teams we will face this season and Blacksburg is no walk in the park. Really looking forward to this one.

Yeah I figured I needed to get him some face time in this report. He's been a very minor role player but has done a great job for us thus far this season. He's had a couple of crucial dropped passes this year, which was disappointing because I wanted him to have a bigger role in that area, but he has been a nice addition. Look for us to continue to find ways to get him involved here as the season goes on.

TULANE LANDS DAILY DOUBLE AS RB TOMPKINS AND TE PARSONS COMMIT
Blazing fast Florida running back reportedly was tops on Green Wave's recruiting board | Team envisions him in versatile role similar to former RB Reggie Moore, who joined in the recruiting effort | Louisiana native Parsons considered the #1 tight end prospect in the nation, will provide "formational flexibility" according to Geezy

                                Report by Eve Jewell, TulaneInsider.com

The Tulane Green Wave landed two of the biggest fish on their recruiting board this week, getting "hard commitments" from both 4-star Florida RB Tony Tompkins and blue chip Louisiana TE Ronnie Parsons. According to school sources, both players were in the top 5 of the team's recruiting rankings, with Tompkins being at the very top of the board. In fact, the two players were the top 2 offensive players on the Wave's recruiting board overall.

Parsons, 6-5 225 pounds and from local Amite High School, is a former basketball player who didn't start playing football until midway through his junior football season. However after a stellar finish to his junior season, in which he caught 50 passes for 614 yards and 12 touchdowns in only 7 games, he quickly became the nation's #1 tight end prospect, according to Scout.com. He is also considered to be the nation's #7 rated prospect overall, according to the same publication.

Tompkins, 5-11 204 pounds, runs a 4.30 40 and is a versatile, all-purpose back that is adept to catching passes out of the backfield as well as returning kicks. Considered to be easily the fastest high school running back available in this year's recruiting pool, the Florida native was thought to be favoring Florida, UCF, and USF, as he wanted to remain close to home. However the Tulane recruiting brass wowed both he and Parsons by rolling out the red carpet during their week 5 visit that culminated with the team's 35-7 win over LSU.

The signings have Tulane head coach D. Geezy and his staff excited.

"Tony is a guy that played wide receiver for his first couple of years of high school, so he's a very skilled route runner for a running back. He can also help in the return game and we expect him to contribute right away. He's an outstanding athlete whose tape is nearly flawless," said Geezy.

Tulane Heisman Trophy winner and Super Bowl 54 MVP Reggie Moore along with his reality TV star wife Kendall Jenner-Moore (ABOVE) helped in the Green Wave's recruiting of Parsons and Tompkins.

"Parsons is an athletically gifted pass catching tight end with a basketball background and has developed into a fantastic red zone option over at Amite High. He is another guy on tape that lined up on the perimeter as a receiver at times and can provide formational flexibility based on multiple game situations."

As previously reported, Tulane helped woo the recruits by soliciting the help of a familiar face two weeks ago - former Tulane and current NFL star RB Reggie Moore. Moore, whose Jacksonville-London Jaguars team was on a BYE during that week, joined the Tulane coaching staff for dinner at Morton's Steakhouse with the recruits and also brought along his wife, Kendall Jenner-Moore, who stars with Moore on the hit reality TV show "Still Keeping Up with Kendall." According to team sources, the group all hit it off and Tompkins in particular was impacted, due to the easy comparison in his game to Moore's.

"Reggie was in town visiting family and the dinner was already planned weeks in advance for he and I, along with the wives, and it all just worked out. We figured he'd provide some inspiration for Tony, Ronnie, and also 4-star CB Tyler Harrison was there as well," said Geezy.

"Reggie spent a lot of time talking with Tony and did a great job of painting a picture for the type of player he could potentially become in our system. I'm sure for Tony, seeing an international celebrity player like Reggie in person, a guy he has the potential to have a similar career tract to, along with his beautiful supermodel and TV star wife was very motivating, to say the least."

The team hopes the two players can help add versatility to their offensive scheme.

"In our personnel meetings as a staff, we always talk about vision...what is our vision, how do we envision ourselves next year, two years from now, three years from now. Well the vision we have is an offense that is scheme versatile and can beat you in multiple ways. A team that can bring out a personnel package with two tight ends along with a running back and can either produce a 5-wide set or power running formation. These two players can potentially provide that scheme versatility we crave," said Geezy.

"I'm not going to pull out the anointing oils for these guys just yet. They still need to come in and compete, but yeah, we think both these players can be a special part of what we do."

The two players join Louisiana 4-star MLB Sean Williams as the only three Wave commitments so far this year. Williams committed to the school after reneging on a soft verbal commitment he gave to Tulane rival LSU following the Wave's lopsided 35-7 win over the Tigers two weeks ago in which he was in attendance.
