Game 7, Year 12 Preview (2021 season): #5 Tulane Green Wave at #19 Virginia Tech

    GAME 7 PREVIEW

    Courtesy

2015: Late in the fourth quarter, Tulane QB Anthony High tossed a swing-screen pass to RB Anthony Barnett who raced passed defenders and plowed his way into the end zone for a game-clinching 22-yard touchdown which made the score 38-21 with 4:13 remaining.

Last Meeting: In what was Tulane's first ever BCS Bowl game appearance, the then-#3 ranked Green Wave knocked off then-#8 ranked Virginia Tech 38-21 in the Sugar Bowl to conclude the 2015 season. Despite an injury sustained early in the game by then-sophomore star RB Reggie Moore, the Wave offense got a big performances out of redshirt sophomore QB Anthony High, who threw for 300 yards and 4 touchdowns in what would be his final game as a member of the Wave. Then-true freshman and eventual star FS Dre Harris also had a big game, amassing 9 tackles while also returning an intercepted option pitch 26 yards for a touchdown. The win for the Wave evened up their all-time record versus the Hokies at 5-5.

1989: Former Virginia Tech LB Randy Cockrell runs back an interception vs. Tulane during their 1989 Homecoming game.

Last Meeting at Venue: The last time these two teams met during the regular season came in 1989 at Blacksburg, a game the Hokies won 30-13 in what was their homecoming game. The game was emotional for the Hokies, as head coach Frank Beamer made an unexpected appearance in the team's locker room before the game, just three days following heart surgery.

Re: Coach Geezy in the Big Easy: Our City, Our Team | Part II - The Golden Age of Tul

Yes!!! Way to go landing Tompkins. He might be one of the prospects I have been excited for most in this series since the days of Reggie Moore. Of course, I do have a strong running back bias. He is going to be a star. I am just so excited. I expect him to have a big role early and often. Fantastic recruitment article as well, the writing and layout is absolutely top notch. As always your work is something I aspire to.

Big matchup coming up here against my Hokies. Try not to beat up on them too badly. In classic Virginia Tech fashion, their strength lies in their ground game and defense. The center of their defensive line could cause you some fits so I am thinking you will want to run away from those tackles. Good luck my friend. Looking forward to this one!

Thanks Cheese...As you've learned in your own project, it is always fun to get a speedy running back and I agree 100% - I have not been this excited to use a player since I had Reggie. I definitely plan to play him right away and use him similarly to Moore - passing game back out of the backfield as well as at WR, return game, running game. He's going to be a stud. Quite honestly, this offense just hasn't felt "right" without having that type of satellite back at our disposal. It'll be great to get back to that style of play.

Appreciate the compliments on the article. As you know by now, whenever I land a player I think is going to play a pivotal role, I try to spice it up a little bit and make his arrival more of a "big deal." Plus it also gave me yet another excuse to spotlight the adult version of Reggie Moore. Damn I miss that player. haha

As for your analysis on VT - I had all the same thoughts going in; you pretty much nailed it as far as their problem areas, as you'll sadly read on this next post...

Game 7, Year 12 (2021 season): #5 Tulane Green Wave at #19 Virginia Tech

          #5- 03 -- 6-1
          #19 28 -- 5-1

Virginia Tech RB Justin Newton's 33-yard second quarter touchdown run made the score 7-3 and would be all the points the Hokies needed.

#5 TULANE'S OFFENSE FALTERS IN AN UGLY 28-3 UPSET LOSS AT #19 VIRGINIA TECH

Green Wave held without a single touchdown for the first time ever under head coach D. Geezy | Wave offense struggles for a second straight week, appears to be officially broken without WR Jean | Hokies RB Cook plows through Tulane defense for 145 yards and 1 touchdown on the ground | Team hoping to bounce back with road trip to Kentucky on short week

Blacksburg, VA -- Last week versus Georgia, Tulane's offense managed to score just one touchdown, which came on a 1-yard pass and was set up by a special teams turnover that gave them the ball right at the goal line. Thanks to the play of its defense and special teams, the Green Wave were able to overcome their struggles offensively and cruised to a 26-3 win over the Bulldogs in Athens. This week versus #19 Virginia Tech however, the 5th ranked Green Wave were unable to get past a second straight horrid offensive performance, falling to the Hokies 28-3 Saturday night in Blacksburg. The game marked the first time ever under head coach D. Geezy that the Green Wave failed to put the ball into the end zone and in effect, resulted in the fewest points scored in a game under Geezy.

Playing without superstar WR Ryan Jean for the second straight week due to a back injury sustained versus LSU back in week 5, the Green Wave offense managed to gain just 223 total yards, one week after only getting 235. True freshman QB Bryce Allen, who had thrown for over 300 yards in each of his first 5 collegiate games, once again fell flat on his face, throwing for less than 200 yards for a second straight week without his injured security blanket Jean. The blue chip recruit from this past off-season managed to complete just 18 of his 33 passes for 188 yards while also not throwing a single touchdown pass for the first time in his career.

"We just look broken out there and Ryan can't get back soon enough; we look like a completely different team without him," said Geezy of Jean, who is reportedly set to return in two weeks following a bye, when Tulane faces Alabama.

The Green Wave went on a 10-play opening drive which netted them a field goal by PK Chris Coleman to give them an early 3-0 lead. However that would be the end of the scoring for the night for Geezy's bunch.

Virginia Tech (5-1) took the lead when backup RB Justin Newton plowed through the Tulane defense for a bruising 33 yard touchdown that made the score 7-3 early in the second quarter. Newton finished the day with 9 carries for 75 yards.

Tulane CB Tim Wright was posterized by RB Charles Cook's stiff arm on this 10-yard fourth quarter run. Cook finished the game with 24 carries for 145 yards and 1 touchdown on the night.

Starting RB Charles Cook was the star of the night for the home team however, rushing 24 times for 145 yards. Cook's diving 1-yard touchdown plunge at the goal line concluded an 11-play 69-yard drive and increased his team's lead to 14-3 late in the third quarter.

Thanks to the legs of Cook and Newton, Virginia Tech finished with 229 yards on the ground as a team, a season-high for yards allowed this season by the Wave defense, much to the chagrin of defensive coordinator Steve Ellis.

"We couldn't stop (expletive) today," said Ellis.

"The only reason they didn't pass for more damn yards is because they didn't need to. We wouldn't have been able to stop them from running even if we had 13 (expletive) men out there today."

Tulane would have an opportunity to get back into the game late in the third quarter. On a drive which saw Allen convert two third downs using his legs and the Wave penetrate the Hokies' red zone, the true freshman would exit the game briefly due to a thigh bruise injury. That's when disaster struck.

Facing a third and 12 from the 20-yard line and in for one play, backup QB Sam Weaver attempted a pass over the middle to freshman WR Brandon McIntyre, however Hokies freshman FS Vince Burton stepped in front of McIntyre to pick it off, thwarting the Wave's best scoring opportunity of the night since their opening possession.

Five plays and 91 yards later, Virginia Tech QB Mike Ferguson found WR Chuck Mann for a 21-yard touchdown to blow the game wide open at 21-3 early in the fourth quarter.

Despite only garnering one sack on the evening, the Hokies pass rush provided pressure the entire game, and on the Wave's next drive, it would pay dividends for the home team.

With Allen back in the game for the Wave's next possession, down by 18, the team had no choice but to go into desperation mode. Facing tremendous pressure, he would get blasted by Hokies DE Roosevelt Stewart as he threw, resulting in an errant pass that flew directly into the awaiting hands of MLB Rico East. The junior stud linebacker would return the interception 49 yards for a back-breaking touchdown, making the score 28-3 with 7:02 remaining and all but dashing any hopes of a Tulane miracle comeback.

The game was put out of reach early in the third quarter when Hokies MLB Rico East picked off QB Bryce Allen, who was hit as he threw, and returned it 49 yards for a touchdown that made the score 28-3.

"We couldn't run the ball, we couldn't stop them from running the ball, we turned the ball over, we couldn't protect, we just flat out stunk," said Geezy as he walked off the field while the Hokies crowd stormed the Lane Stadium turf after the final whistle to celebrate.

Prior to Saturday's game, the fewest points the Green Wave had ever scored under Geezy was seven points, which happened during the 2013 season when the team was still a member of Conference USA. In week two of that season, Kentucky blew out the Wave 41-7 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

Tulane (6-1, 4-0) will look to right the ship next week versus those Wildcats (1-5, 1-3), albeit on a short week, as they will play them in Lexington on Thursday. The team likely cannot afford to lose anymore games if it hopes to play in its first national title game in three seasons, however Geezy is not concerned about that at all.

"All that postseason projection crap - that's for you guys to discuss and figure out," said the 12th year head coach who has won two national championships during his stay in New Orleans.

"Right now, my main focus is figuring out how in the heck do we score a freaking touchdown."

Frustrated true freshman QB Bryce Allen pulls away from junior RT Simon Martin's attempt to console him as they walk to the locker room following the young signal caller's second straight subpar performance.

If you had to lose someone at night in Lane Stadium to my Hokies would be the most I could bear. The night games always get wild and crazy here in Blacksburg. That being said, sorry about the loss my friend. As we discussed the problem areas are exactly what happened. It looks like you lost complete control in the trenches. Tompkins can't suit up soon enough at this point to ignite your ground game.

The run defense is concerning but when your offense is doing so little to help, you can't blame the defense too much. I worry about the team on the short week. I assume that means you'll be playing it on a short week as well. Hopefully you can bounce back before revving up for the Crimson Tide.

                  Hang in there my friend.

Not a whole lot to say about that other than the offense needs to figure out how to survive without Jean.

You're absolutely right. I think I underestimated their home field advantage, not even realizing they were on the Toughest Places to Play list until the announcers mentioned it on one of our early third downs. Despite the game result, that was a very fun and satisfying atmosphere to play in, turkey noises and all; it truly felt like I was "coaching" a team that unexpectedly walked into a hornets nest.

Yeah, putting my video game imagination cap on, I'd like to think that maybe the voters have taken into account that we're without our best player temporarily and realize that we went into a snake pit versus a very good team. I really thought we'd fall further, so I was happy to see we remained in the top 10.

As you said, there is still plenty of time left to get into the top 2.

Yeah those two fat DTs gave us fits all night long. There was no getting past those two, and even the two guys behind them who aren't listed were rated in the 90s. That's really a big advantage defensively; it disrupts both the run game and passing game.

I'm not too concerned about the D. As you said, I think they just got worn down, especially since we could not convert a third down to save our lives offensively. And of course, when the momentum gets rolling, almost any team is tough to beat on this game.

You know me too well my friend...I indeed will be simulating the short week by playing this game out of routine on Thursday night with minimal preparation. Hope the result isn't the same as last season's short week upset loss at Ole Miss.

No doubt about it...fortunately Kentucky may be the perfect tonic for a struggling offense. As you'll see when I post the game preview in the next day or so, they are TURRIBLE. As I mentioned to Cheese though, I thought the same thing against Ole Miss last season and they beat us, so we better come ready.

Appreciate it brother...I'm in love with this dynasty. Now in year 12, I have officially DOUBLED my previous longest running dynasty prior to this one. It is very satisfying when you get to this point in dynasty mode, and have all the history to look back on.

                          Tue, 12 Oct 2021 8:45:01 -0700

                          report courtesy Eve Jewell, TulaneInsider.com

Eve Jewell of TulaneInsider.com reports that Tulane has received commitments from two more players this week - 4-star Texas CB Tyler Harrison (6-2, 174, 4.46 40 time, #3 rated CB) and 4-star Kentucky CB Adam "Pacman" Johnson (6-3, 174, 4.48 40 time, #9 rated CB).

Along with recent commits RB Tony Tompkins and TE Ronnie Parsons, Harrison was the third member of the trio of recruits that reportedly accompanied team officials and former Green Wave RB Reggie Moore for dinner during the weekend of the Wave's game versus LSU back in week 5.

The pair of corners have an excellent chance to contribute right away, as the team is set to lose senior starting CB Tim Wright (88 ovr) to graduation this off-season and star junior CB Nate Hall (92 ovr) is likely to forgo his senior year and enter the 2022 NFL draft.

                          2022 TULANE COMMITMENTS - through week 7

Tulane | Seldom-used WR Reese promoted to starting lineup
                          Tue, 12 Oct 2021 8:45:01 -0700
Tammy Nunez of the New Orleans Times Picayune reports that redshirt junior WR Jared Reese (76 ovr, 95 spd) has been elevated to the top of the receiver depth chart and will start Thursday night at Kentucky in what the team hopes will be their final game without injured star WR Ryan Jean (95 ovr, 96 spd). Listed at 6-4 201 pounds, Reese has played sparingly for the Green Wave during his career, catching a career-high 12 receptions for 199 yards and 2 touchdowns last season, when he was listed as the team's #5 receiver.

Following the acquisitions of true freshmen WRs Jason Mason (79 ovr, 92spd) and Brandon McIntyre (79 ovr, 90spd), Reese was pushed down to the #7 spot on the receiver depth chart and has not caught a pass yet this season.

After back to back poor offensive performances, the team is looking for a spark and hopes Reese's size and speed will more adequately replace Jean's 6-6 frame on the perimeter. During Jean's absence, the team has tried out multiple wide receivers in various spots in an attempt to find the best combination possible, but the net result has been two of the worst offensive performances during head coach D. Geezy's tenure in New Orleans, including last week's 28-3 blowout loss at Virginia Tech.

Jean is expected to return to the lineup in two weeks when the team faces #3 Alabama at home following a bye.

I like the move to elevate Reese into the lineup; at this point really, any chance at a spark for the offense is worth taking.

I echo the words of Cheese, the offense has become a bit stagnant so anything that might give it a spark is always going to be a plus in my book
