Re: Madden NFL 17 Video - New Hurdle Move

Running animations and locomotion (acceleration, de-celeration, footplanting, etc) has been Maddens #1 glaring weakness since Madden 06' came out for XBOX 360.

The Madden team has never found a way to fix this without breaking the engine. I will not get excited for another Madden, no matter how great the new features are, until the running animations and locomotion are completely overhauled.

Interesting thing is FIFA has one of the better locomotion engines in gaming. Really wish they could apply that to Madden. It would be a gamechanger.

It doesn't make sense that you have such a large development team but the running motions seem to regress yearly. The running motions should of superseded all the new features and been number 1 on developers priority. I haven't purchased a madden in over 10yrs this just won't cut it to bring me back. I don't know how the same developers who created madden 04 can come up with such an abomination as with what we see in this clip. Madden will sell regardless but its a shame cause the game could be so much better if they fixed the running motion.

Madden NFL 17 Video - New Hurdle Move

Live ball physics, gap play, and modern zone technique are all more important than running animations IMO.

Hopefully they change them soon though, as they do look awkward from time to time.

Yes I know those features should be more important than running motions which makes me a part of the small minority that are reluctant to make a purchase based on that. Hopefully the devs read this forum and make running motions a priority for next year.

While I agree that all of those new features are a priority for us this year... And I'm very happy that they added them (ball physics in particular)...
I do think that running and basic locomotion needs to be a top priority going forward.
I think running is obviously a major foundation to the game of football.. And it has gotten to be quite an eye sore.
I will show the game to people who are not into video games.. And while they are impressed with the detail and graphics.. One of the first comments is always
'Why do they run like that?'

The basic running animation in the game is very odd and awkward. I'm not sure how they got to how it is today. What happened from ps2 days to now?
They all look like they have something up their rear end, and they have a bow legged appearance to their legs. (I wonder if this has to do with the extension issue with the knee bending that ea games seem to have)
Not to mention the odd arm salute swing that seems to happen all time time.

I just think it needs to be a major priority. Not for just the sim community.. But for the game in general. For the casual fan to see a clip of the game..
Take a look at the comments from the first few clips from 'casual fans'. There is a lot of comments about how unnatural the running looks.
I just think it would do wonders for the overall aesthetic of the game.
Ea nhl overhauled the skating a few years back. Calling it 'true performance skating'. Madden should follow suit

Good post. And here is my question: Why can't this be addressed in a patch THIS year?

Stuff like this is where I want to see this development team evolve. We get updates for MUT literally months after the NFL season is over even to the point of risking the stability of the game which the last big MUT update did. But what about other areas of the game?

For example, if new uniforms/uniform combinations pop up during the season you didn't know about, you should have a plan in place to get those uni's into the game THAT season, not next season, THAT season while it's still relevant.

If something in your game looks THAT bad like these run animations, there needs to be a way to address it like every other developer finds a way to address things, and get it corrected THAT season, not next season. After all, running makes up the majority of your game, so it's not like it's a minor thing you never see, I know there are people here who slant everything as a minor thing though...

We shouldn't have to wait until August of 2017 for this to be taken care of. I didn't think anything could be worse than Madden 16's run animations but what we've been seeing of 17's has proven that wrong. And what's with all the head motions? What are they doing, and why???

Like I said before, if they can't do anything new at this point I understand, but see if there is a way to go back to 15's at least which are far from perfect but not as bad as the mess we've been given in 16 and now 17.

I mean guys, this is laughable:

                <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/HVQOALso1aE" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

                <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/uZp2lRERcOI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Where is the QA on this stuff? How does somebody working on that look at that and go "yeah, nailed it. That's a wrap! Put it in!" These are not human motions. They look like monsters from an animated kids film.

I agree man. And I definitely understand what you are saying..

But improving the running would change everything. I guarantee every juke animation, catch, fumble, throw..etc would flow 1000 times better if it was preceded and followed by fluid and natural running animations.

I certainly understand your point. I don't think cosmetics should be ahead of AI and gameplay stuff... But running is different. It's the most important facet of the sport. People are running on a grass field.
In a way it would be like having the ball not spiral correctly..
It isn't cosmetic like a chin strap or an arm sleeve. It's a major issue with the game.
But again, I def agree with what you're saying. Just think running animations are a different monster all together

It's cosmetic. It's how they look running, not the ability to run. Even largely goes unnoticed until comparisons are used or it's specifically pointed out.

Technically it's cosmetic sure. But not all cosmetic things are created equal lol

When you have players running like Forrest Gump and Woody from Toy Story than it becomes a major issue.

LOL. Now I see what people mean with Woody reference, with the wild swinging and high arm motions. Wow.

I don't really get the hype regarding the hurdle. Running in M15 was great, and had the great precision modifier for awesome stiff arms and hurdles...albeit sometimes over-powered, then it was nerfed for 16. So now it is semi un-nerfed?
