Northwestern has been a staple in the Big Ten for a long time. They have fallen on harder times in the last decade or so with a recent resurgence. Pat Fitzgerald has done a magical job with this program. He has taken them to 5 Bowl Games in his 10 years as their Head Coach. His record may not be great but its still progress. Northwestern is coming off back to back 5-7 seasons but are looking to get back to that Bowl success this season.

All of these games are streamed on my Twitch channel which is below and then is uploaded to my YouTube channel which is also below.

              Game Notes
Northwestern will travel to North Carolina to visit the Duke Blue Devils in both teams first game of the 2015 season. Northwestern is coming back to back disappointing seasons meanwhile Duke has been improving with each season. They have made it to three straight Bowl Games. While they have yet to win a bowl game this century each of those last 3 was very close games with a lot of offense. Northwestern's defense is average at best so it will be a real challenge to try and shut down a fast paced Duke attack. On the other side, Duke will have to try and manage the Pistol offense that Northwestern utilizes. Northwestern will look to have a strong running game that in theory would allow them to go over the top with a large amount of play action they run out of their base formation. Expect this to be close and probably high scoring first game of the season.

Duke Offense Too Much for Northwestern
Northwestern traveled to Duke to take on the Blue Devils in what was both teams opening game. Northwestern looking to get off to a strong start to the season by making an impact taking down an ACC contender in Duke. Duke, however, was ready for the Wildcat challenge that they were faced with.

Northwestern got the ball to start the game but was short lived as they were forced to a 3 and out. Duke immediately answered with a quick drive and chip shot Field Goal putting them up 3-0. Northwestern would at least get a first down on their next drive but that would be all as they were forced to punt yet again. Duke wasted little time on the following drive stringing together 3 or 4 ten plus yard plays in route to the games first touchdown. Duke was up 10-0 on the Cats real quick into this one. Northwestern finally started to put a drive together that looked like they had found life, but this was put to end as NW QB Oliver threw a lazy pass over the middle that was intercepted. Following the turnover, Duke went right back to work and drove it down on several plays which culminated in yet another touchdown as Duke QB Sirk ran it in from 17 yards out. After just one-quarter of football, Duke held a commanding lead of 17-0 and this looked like a route.

Northwestern finally found life in the 2nd quarter through the running game of their star running back Justin Jackson. Jackson carried the load on the first drive of the 2nd quarter and eventually put himself in the end zone getting NW on the board. 17-7 following the NW score. Northwestern's defense looked revived after their offense put some points on the board. They forced a quick 3 and out against Duke and got the ball back in decent field position. Although Northwestern wouldn't get anything on that drive it set up the tone for the 2nd quarter as Duke was unable to get anything going on offense. Late in the 2nd the Wildcats were able to find the end zone yet again to cut into the lead. With just 11 seconds left in the half, Cameron Dickerson beat him man off the line and was wide open in the endzone for an easy touchdown. The score at the half was 17-14 in favor of Duke but Northwestern looked to be back in the game at least.

The 2nd half was more of the same in terms of offensive outbursts. Duke came out flying and score on their opening possession on what was Sirk's 2nd touchdown pass of the game. Duke increased their lead early to 24-14. Northwestern refused to go away, though. They stuck to the running game and were able to net a field goal on the drive in response to the fast touchdown. The 3rd really quieted down after the opening two drives. Both teams would trade punts and set up a close 4th quarter. Going into the 4th the score was 24-17 Duke.

Only being down by a touchdown was a surprise for a team that showed no life in the first and was down by as much as 17 points in this game. But Duke continued their fast starts to quarters in the 4th. Continuing a drive that started near the end of the 3rd, Duke was able to find the end zone again on the arm of their quarterback Sirk. He threw his 3rd touchdown of the game giving Duke a 31-17 lead just 30 seconds into the 4th. Northwestern came right back, though. They strung together a drive that would take up half of the quarter in terms of time. They drove close to 75 yards in about 3:40 minutes. Luckily on 3rd and goal they were finally able to cross the plane. making it a 31-24 game. The Wildcats just needed one stop to have a shot at tying the game up. But on 2nd down on the ensuing drive, Duke put the game away. Northwestern got their blitz picked up and a slanting WR Barnes beat his corner off the line and was hit in stride by Sirk. No safeties were back to stop Barnes as he ran 74 yards for what would be the dagger. Northwestern drops week 1 against Duke 38-24.

                  Game Notes
This week is a big matchup of Top 25 teams. The Stanford Cardinal travel to Evansville, IL to take on the Wildcats of Northwestern. #6 Stanford will be opening their season with this game while Northwestern is looking for an upset to make up for their loss last week at the hands of Duke in week 1. Stanford brings a running back by the name of Christian McCaffrey. He is projected to be a part of the Heisman Race at some point this season. Northwestern had a rough time slowing down the running game in Week 1 against Duke. With such a high caliber player to go against the Wildcats are going to have their hands full trying to contain him and the rest of the Cardinal offense.

Stanford Routes the Wildcats with Huge First Half
Northwestern came into this game with high hopes of a possible upset and a quick turnaround following a tough loss against Duke. However, #6 Stanford had significantly different plans for this game. The Cardinal and Christian McCaffrey came out flying in this one. Home field advantage was nowhere to be seen for the Wildcats who went down 14 points on back to back touchdown drives for Stanford. They opened to a 14-0 lead after the first and just kept stacking on the points in the 2nd quarter. Stanford managed another 3 touchdowns in the 2nd quarter. They also tacked on a field goal to give themselves a 38-3 lead heading into half-time. This was not the start that the Wildcats were looking for on this September Saturday.

The 2nd half was more of the same as Stanford continued to dismantle the Wildcats defense. McCaffrey and Sanders Jr. combined for over 200 yards rushing and 4 total TDs. Northwestern's offense was nowhere to be seen. Zack Oliver and Christian Thorson did not have a good day throwing the ball. And to tack on to that they were forced to pretty much only throw the ball because of how quickly the Wildcats fell in a hole. Combined they threw 4 interceptions on the day and just looked outclassed in every fashion. Northwestern turned the ball over a total of 5 times. In the end, Stanford takes this Top 25 tilt 55-10. Northwestern will look to get in the win column next week as Rutgers makes the visit to Northwestern.

Northwestern will be welcoming Rutgers University to town for their week 3 tilt. The Wildcats will be looking to rebound after getting destroyed by Stanford in week 2 55-10. As you can see in the stats above Northwestern's defense has been dreadful so far this season. They have a strong secondary on paper but allowing almost 400 yards a game through the air alone doesn't reflect that apparent strength. Northwestern is going to need a big game out of star running back Justin Jackson if they want to try and finally get a win this season.

Wildcats' Jackson Runs All Over The Scarlet Knights
Northwestern hasn't had the ideal start that they had in mind to this season of college football. Week 1 was a rough late loss to Duke and then week 2 was a stomping at the hands of Stanford. They currently have one of the worst defenses in all of the college football and are desperate to get something in the W column. Justin Jackson their star running back looked keen to change that on this Saturday in September. The Wildcats welcomed the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers to town to open Big Ten conference play.

The trend of explosive first half continues for the Wildcats in this one as they were able to jump out to an early 14-7 lead in the first quarter. Both teams had big plays that resulted in 7 points in this first quarter. Rutgers running back took one to the house from 60 yards out but was answered shortly after by an INT return of 80 yards by NW DB Watkins II. It was clear from the start that Jackson was going to be the workhorse in this one. The 2nd quarter was easily the most exciting in this game as there was a total of 24 points scored by both teams. Northwestern was on the better end of this quarter though as they were able to really open up the game before half-time. After allowing an early touchdown that tied the game at 14 the Wildcats came right back by score on their next 3 drives. As it turns out those 14 points that Rutgers put up early would be all the scoring they would get in this one. With a score of 31-14 at the half in favor of the Wildcats, it looked like a walk in the park for them in the 2nd half.

The 2nd half turned into exactly that as the Wildcats defense finally showed up in a game and shut down any possible Scarlet Knights threats. Justin Jackson got the bulk of his work in the 2nd quarter but he managed to break the 200-yard mark about halfway through the 4th quarter. Jackson was easily the player of the game in this one. He finished with 25 carries for 230 yards and 1 Touchdown. Warren Long the backup RB was the beneficiary of Jackson's work as he cashed in 2 touchdowns from the goal line in this one. The Wildcats put the Scarlet Knights away with a final score of 41-14. The Wildcats will travel to Penn State next week to take on the Nittany Lions.

way to get back on the winning side of things. Not sure if I overlooked something but how was Northwestern a ranked team at the start of the season?

Honestly, I have no idea. The last 2 seasons they were ranked was the 2012 and 2015 season. Ideally I'm currently playing the 2015 season so that shouldn't of carried over. I just went with what the game gave me lol.
