I see you play free safety on defense hahahahaha. Good job cleaning up at the awards. Too bad you couldn't snag returner of the year, but four awards seems like a significant number anyway.

Lee Palmer nicely done! Still think it's crazy to see the surge of Central Michigan at #1 - amazing. That BCS controversy is ridiculous, poor Trojans. Glad to see my Mizzou Tigers at 11-2, well done! Fontenot winning the Heisman is pretty crazy too considering there's been a USC absence for so long. Love that you included that detail!

I'm all over the place, but I've caught up to the thread finally. Keep up the great work!

Haha...yes I do. I'm actually considering next season forcing myself to play another position and/or restricting things I can do before the snap. I.E. No more "free roaming," since the CPU defenders can't do it. I think that has a lot to do with my insane safety snaps, especially the high tackles for loss number.

I was disappointed for my boy Joel Ryan, not winning the award his senior season, and for it to go to a RB I wanted badly last year just added salt to the wound.

Thanks Matt - Glad to hear you've caught up on everything and great to hear from you.

This Central Michigan story line seems to be pretty captivating for the followers of this dynasty - I hope they come through with the W LOL

I wish I could mod in a playoff; this would be the perfect year for one, but I actually prefer this old, nostalgic version of the college football landscape.

            Thanks for checking in guys!

Game 14, Year 12 Preview (2021 season): #7 Tulane vs. #12 West Virginia

              GAME 14 PREVIEW

              Courtesy

TOP ROW: Down 17-6 in the fourth quarter, Former Tulane QB Preston Fields completes a 77-yard touchdown pass to then-true freshman WR Ryan Jean that cut the Green Wave's deficit to 17-14 with 8:09 remaining in the game. | BOTTOM ROW: The pair would hook up for a score again one possession later, this time from 76 yards away, which gave Tulane its first lead of the game at 21-17 with 5:59 to go in the contest.

Last Meeting: Tulane and West Virginia last faced each other just two seasons ago in the Allstate Sugar Bowl to conclude the 2019 season. Playing in their home stadium, the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, the then-8th ranked Green Wave erased a 17-6 fourth quarter lead by scoring 22 unanswered points en route to a 28-17 victory over the Mountaineers. Former Wave QB Preston Fields found then-true freshman WR Ryan Jean for two long touchdown passes (77 and 76 yards) to give Tulane its first lead of the game and former Green Wave RB Bernie Davis' 64-yard touchdown run provided an exclamation point as Tulane finished its season 12-2. Jean won player of the game honors, catching 7 passes for 225 yards and the two touchdowns to cap off his stellar rookie campaign. West Virginia leads the series versus the Wave with a 4-3 record all-time.

Last Meeting II: These two teams last met in the regular season on October 20, 1979 in Morgantown, a game the Mountaineers won over the Green Wave 27-17. The loss for Tulane was only their second of that season, a year they finished 9-3.

              Head Coach D. Geezy's Take

Tulane head coach D. Geezy addressed the media Thursday morning.

Well obviously our season all comes down to this final opponent on a big stage. Yeah we'd rather be in Pasadena preparing for the national title game, but winning the SEC and playing in the Sugar Bowl is nothing to be ashamed of.

This is a West Virginia squad that we are somewhat familiar with, having played them the year before last in this same game. The story with them is their three, really four-headed monster in their offensive backfield. Their QB Ike Archie (82 ovr) and his older brother at fullback, Derrick Archie (81 ovr), along with RBs Jonathan Larson (92 ovr) and Kevin Estes (90 ovr) form a very formidable group. They also have some very good wideouts and an excellent offensive line. They play a spread, no huddle and that is something we had problems with a few weeks back in the Southern Miss loss.

Defensively they run a 3-3-5 stack base and are extremely athletic on every level. I am particularly impressed with their speed in the secondary, and I don't think we'll see Ryan Jean running wide open very often the way he did two years ago in our comeback win. They held us to 6 points for three quarters two years ago until Jean got loose; Jean may not get too many opportunities for that to happen this time around.

This is a stage we have been on a couple of times in the past but this is once again a unique situation where we get to host our own bowl game. West Virginia is technically the home team and we'll be the ones using the visitors locker room and running out of the visitors tunnel at Gate A, section 156 and standing on the east sideline rather than on the west side. The NCAA has mandated that we practice at a local high school rather than at our own facility, which is where the road Sugar Bowl team typically practices while the "home team" works out at the Saints training facility. We are also being required to stay at a hotel in New Orleans and are banned from our campus for a week, so this is an interesting dynamic but again, it isn't one that we aren't used to.

We have a chance to pick up win #12 and get another BCS bowl win before heading into the off-season. We view this as a big stepping stone for several of our young players, especially our young quarterback. This Mountaineers squad is loaded, and if not for a bad play or two versus Auburn in their season finale, they'd probably be playing against Central Michigan for the national championship. This is also a special opportunity for our seniors and potential departing juniors to put on one last performance inside of the dome; we're all very excited for this one.

I'd be a little worried if I were you, considering that they gave Southern Miss their only loss this year and you were unable to beat USM. All the same, hope you win and Roll Wave!

Looking at everything, Tulane has the edge. Despite West Virginia putting up better numbers, ratings wise the Green Wave have the better defense. Their offense should be troublesome, which should just make for a good game. They only have 3 quality wins in my opinion (Southern Miss, Rutgers, Pitt), while Tulane had the tougher schedule and Tulane's two losses are to teams that only have one blemish on their record whereas West Virginia's loss was definitely an upset.

If I had to guess, I'd say final score will be 21-17 Tulane, with West Virginia having the ball last and being unable to finish their drive.

Thanks BookWork....This West Virginia squad is quite impressive. I thought for sure they were a shoe-in for the national title for the past several weeks. That running game and defense are both off the charts impressive and will keep our hands full. Hopfully our defense from the Florida game shows up and not the defense from the Southern Miss game!

I'm expecting a closely played game as well. Yeah their wins aren't all that impressive, but their roster is on par with ours, and perhaps arguably better than ours.

I expect a close battle, unless the Superdome magic gets them reeling early. I'm really worried about their no-huddle attack, as that gave us major problems in the Southern Miss loss.

Sounds like the prevailing thought has us at about -4.5 favorites for this one. I'm hoping for a close game, but not TOO close. LOL

Thanks for checking in all...time to kick this one off! This may be my boy Ryan Jean's farewell game.

After a ton of reading and loving every minute of this, I am finally caught up. Sorry I dropped off there for a week and a half my friend. I was on an intense surgery rotation and sleep was at a minimum let alone anything else.

What a roller coaster it has been. The Southern Miss loss stung but like you said I almost did feel like it was one of those "good" losses. I won't lie that up until that point I had been hanging onto the idea of you sneaking into the BCS title game.

Happy to see Central Michigan in the title game. I can live with USC getting snubbed although I have no good reason for that aside from me bitter over here about the program.

Looking towards the West Va game, they strike me as a team that like you said has a ton of athleticism and a ton of very good players. I am not seeing any 'wow' factor players but at the same time I don't see any weaknesses. I expect them to come out with that spread quick pace attack which can be a weakness for your squad. You are inside though and out the elements so I am expecting a win here.

Good luck my friend. I am so happy to be back and caught up with this. Much love.

First of all - it is great to hear from you man. Feels like it has been awhile. Glad to see you back at it.

This season has been quite the rollercoaster ride. The close wins, the injury to Jean, the blowout loss to Virginia Tech, the last minute loss to Southern Miss, the triple OT win versus Alabama...I must say this may have been overall the most entertaining season of them all for me.

You were spot-on in your assessment of West Virginia, as you'll see in a moment. This game was par for the course for year 12 - a heart-pounder.

Welcome back and I look forward to more EMU updates!

New Orleans, LA -- For the second time in two tries, West Virginia held a double-digit second half lead over Tulane in the Sugar Bowl, this time amassing a 21-3 halftime lead and later a 28-10 third quarter lead. However, just like that January night two years ago in which the Green Wave scored 22 unanswered fourth quarter points to defeat the Mountaineers 28-17 in the 2019 Sugar Bowl, Tulane did what it had to do to defend its Mercedes-Benz Superdome turf, ousting West Virginia 37-34 in overtime Sunday night in the 2021 Sugar Bowl. True freshman QB Bryce Allen's 2-yard touchdown pass to freshman WR Jason Mason on the final play of regulation tied the game and sent it into overtime, and Allen's 12-yard scoring toss to WR Ryan Jean in the extra session sealed the Wave's fourth consecutive bowl victory.

True freshman QB Bryce Allen caught fire in the second half and finished with a career-high 466 passing yards to go along with his 5 touchdown passes.

After getting off to a slow start but catching fire in the second half, Allen finished the night with a career-high 466 passing yards and 5 touchdowns while showing great poise down the stretch in his bowl game debut.

The game got off to a horrid start for Tulane. West Virginia's #2 rated defense held the Green Wave offense in check most of the first half, holding them to just a field goal.

The Mountaineers (11-2) gained the lead in the first quarter when QB Isaac Archie found WR Shawn Walker for a 34-yard score, giving their team an early 7-0 advantage.

Later in the first half, after giving up the aforementioned field goal to Tulane, West Virginia would increase its lead. Allen, who was sacked a whopping 8 times on the night, was sacked in the backfield by DE Will Parham and DE Alex Smith recovered the ball, returning it 5 yards for an easy touchdown that increased the Mountaineers lead to 14-3.

Late in the second quarter, already up 14-3 and seemingly content to go in at halftime with an 11 point lead, West Virginia would strike gold again while appearing to just be trying to run out the clock. This time, backed up at their own 9-yard line with under 20 seconds remaining in the half, their stud RB Jonathan Larson broke loose, breaking two tackles on his way to a back-breaking 91-yard touchdown that gave the Mountaineers a 21-3 halftime lead. Larson finished the game with a game-high 24 carries for 179 yards, though virtually all of his damage came in the first half, to the tune of 14 carries for 171 yards.

West Virginia RB Jonathan Larson broke two tackles on this sensational 91-yard touchdown run that gave his team a commanding 21-3 lead going into halftime. He finished the first half with a whopping 171 yards on 14 carries.

Larson's big play wrapped up a nearly flawless first half for his team, with the West Virginia's only blemish coming via a missed 57-yard field goal by its freshman PK Marcus Randall in the first quarter.

At halftime, Tulane made adjustments on both sides of the ball, putting a focus on stopping Larson with run blitzes defensively while opening up its aerial attack offensively, and it paid dividends.

Tulane was able to get back into the game when Allen found TE Steven Carpenter for a 5-yard touchdown that made the score 21-10 early in the third quarter. The score concluded a 5-play 75-yard drive that was primarily aided by receptions of 19 yards and 42 yards by freshman WR Brandon McIntyre, who finished with a career-high 9 receptions for 149 yards on the night.

West Virginia would answer right back however. On its very next possession, taking advantage of Tulane's run blitz-heavy adjustments, Archie found Walker once again for a deep touchdown, this one from 48 yards away, increasing their lead back to 28-10 midway through the third.

"They're such a damn tough offense to defend; no doubt the best one we faced this season," said Green Wave defensive coordinator Steve Ellis.

After being forced to punt on their next possession, Tulane's defense would finally come up with a big play. Senior CB Tim Wright's interception with 3:04 to go in the third put Tulane right back in position to make it a ball game down by 18 points. And that they did.

On the very next play following the turnover, Allen found Jean for their first touchdown hookup of the night, this one from 35 yards away, cutting their team's deficit to 28-17 with 2:56 remaining in the third quarter. Jean finished the game with 9 receptions for 242 yards and 3 touchdowns in what many believe could have been his final collegiate game, as he is a projected top 5 pick in April's NFL draft.

Late in the third quarter, Tulane nearly cost themselves the ball game. RB Buck Johnson III, who was held to just 30 yards on the night, was hit by Mountaineers DT Charles DeLoach, coughed up the football, and DeLoach pounced on it, giving West Virginia the ball back deep in Tulane territory. The Green Wave defense held firm however, and got a crucial stop to hold the Mountaineers to a field goal, keeping it a two possession 14-point game at 31-17 now in the fourth quarter with 8:55 remaining.

West Virginia RB Jonathan Larson finished with 179 yards on the ground, however he was bottled up in the second half, gaining only 8 yards on 10 carries after halftime.
The Green Wave desperately needed points but were forced to punt to West Virginia again with under six minutes remaining down by 14. However their misfortune finally came to an end when Randall missed his second field goal of the night, this one from 54 yards away. Four plays later, Allen found Jean for their second scoring hookup of the evening, this time from 36 yards out, cutting the Green Wave deficit to 31-24 with 3:55 to go.

West Virginia, at this point now nursing a 7 point lead, would need to go on a long drive to run out the clock and perhaps get a score to make it a double-digit game again. They'd penetrate Tulane territory with under three minutes remaining, however, facing a 3rd and 2 from the Green Wave 43-yard line, Larson would get stuffed behind the line of scrimmage by Wave senior DE Paul Byrd for a 2-yard loss, forcing them to punt with under two minutes to go.

Following the ensuing punt touchback, the Green Wave got the ball back with 1:45 remaining and with 80 yards to go for a potential game-tying touchdown down 31-24. After getting a first down on the first play of the drive via a 16-yard pass from Allen to McIntyre, disaster struck when Allen would get sacked by Parham for the third time on the night.

Now, facing a 3rd and 24 from their own 22-yard line, the Green Wave needed a miracle - and they got it. Jean's 43-yard jump-ball reception down to the West Virginia 34-yard line put Tulane back in business with less than a minute remaining. Jean would make another big play six plays later with the clock ticking, catching a 17-yard reception on fourth and 7, which got the ball down to the West Virginia 2-yard with :01 remaining.

Following a timeout, the Green Wave had one last play to tie the game and complete its massive comeback. From under center, Allen took the snap and rolled out to the left to try to find Jean, however he was covered. So the rookie signal caller glanced to the right and found fellow true freshman WR Jason Mason wide open and hit him with a perfect pass and, keeping both feet inbounds, Mason tied the game at 31-31 on the final play of regulation. Mason, who has had somewhat of an underwhelming start to his career after being rated as the nation's #1 receiving prospect this past off-season, caught only that one pass on the night, but it was without a doubt the most important of his young career thus far.

QB Bryce Allen found fellow true freshman WR Jason Mason who came all the way across the field and tiptoed the sideline to grab the game-tying 2-yard touchdown, making the score 31-31 as time expired in regulation.

The touchdown concluded an 11-play 79-yard drive which lasted 1:45 and included several clutch moments. Sophomore PK Chris Coleman, who has been anything but automatic, having missed five field goals and two extra points season, nailed the PAT attempt after West Virginia called all three of its timeouts in succession in an effort to ice him, sending the game into overtime.

"My heart was about beat out of my chest on that final offensive play," said Tulane head coach D. Geezy.

"The play we ran was a simple concept in which Mason and Jean are both split out wide on both sides of the formation and run drag routes to the opposite sides. We get Jean to come in motion just before the snap to get a head start on his route and he's the primary target running a drag from right to left. Bryce rolled out left, saw Jean was covered, then made the split second decision to throw across his body all the way to the right, really without even looking just before getting hit, and thankfully Jason made the play.

"Bryce literally just threw the ball to where he thought Jason would be. It was really a throw made out of desperation and a miracle play."

In overtime, West Virginia would go three and out and have to settle for a 36-yard field goal by Randall which gave the Mountaineers a 34-31 lead.

The lead wouldn't last long though, as Tulane would go on a quick three play drive in overtime. McIntyre's 7-yard reception on first down was followed by a 6-yard second down carry by Johnson III, setting up Jean's aforementioned 12-yard walk-off touchdown that gave Tulane its first lead of the game and the exhilarating 37-34 victory.

"Ryan has been such a clutch player since day 1 here," said Geezy of the 6-6 211 pound phenom.

Considered by many to be the top receiver in the nation, junior star WR Ryan Jean salutes the crowd after what may have been his final game with the Green Wave. The 6-6 211 pound junior finished with 9 receptions for 242 yards and 3 touchdowns on the night.

"I don't know if this was his last game - that decision will come from him in a few days - but if it was, what a way to go out; you're playing on national t.v., the Sugar Bowl, your home stadium in the state that you grew up in, and you make the game-winning grab on the final play of overtime. What a heck of a player, and what a heck of a career he's had."

The win for Tulane marks their 51st in their last 52 games at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, their only blemish coming in last season's 31-28 loss to USC.

"This is just a special place to play and it is just flat-out hard to beat us in this building," said Geezy.

"Something magical happens when we play inside this dome. We feel it; our opponents feel it. You have to bring it for all four quarters, and even if you do, you still need a little extra. Fortunately, West Virginia didn't and we came through with one of if not the most thrilling victory we've had in this place."

Notes: WR Ryan Jean's game-winning 12-yard touchdown grab pushed his career receiving yardage total to 5,001. Jean is Tulane's all-time leading receiving yardage leader, with former Wave WR Brandon McNeil (2016-2018) a distant second with 3,766 yards. Jean is also the team's all-time receiving touchdown leader with 55 scores...Green Wave senior FS Lee Palmer ended the night with a career-high and school record 23 tackles. His previous career-high was 15, which was achieved in 2019 versus Ole Miss. The previous school record was held by former Wave LB Larry Branch, who notched 20 tackles in a 31-21 win over Southern Miss in 2018...Sunday night's win was the Green Wave's second largest comeback win ever under head coach D. Geezy; the largest came in 2015, when Tulane erased a 28-7 deficit to defeat San Diego St. 42-35 in their 2015 season opener....True freshman WR Brandon McIntyre eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark for receiving yards with his performance Sunday night, joining Jean as the team's other 1,000-yard receiver. This marks the first time under Geezy that Tulane has had two players at the wide receiver position go over 1,000 yards in a single season.

West Virginia QB Isaac Archie had a solid performance, finishing with 191 passing yards and 2 touchdowns.

DE Alex Smith scoops and scores following a sack of QB Bryce Allen that resulted in a fumble, making the score 14-3 midway through the second quarter.

Green Wave true freshman WR Brandon McIntyre's 42-yard grab set Tulane up for its first touchdown of the day. McIntyre finished the night with a season-high 9 receptions for 149 yards.

Moments after McIntyre's deep catch, TE Steven Carpenter hauled in this 5-yard touchdown that cut Tulane's deficit to 21-10 early in the third quarter.

True freshman QB Bryce Allen was under intense pressure all evening long, being sacked 8 times on the night, including this second half sack by Mountaineers DT Charles DeLoach.

Senior CB Tim Wright, playing in his final game with Tulane, intercepted this third quarter pass and provided just the spark that the Green Wave needed while trailing 28-10.

One play after Wright's interception, junior WR Ryan Jean was able to corral this touchdown grab behind leaping West Virginia SS Matt Wright to make the score 28-17 in the third quarter.

With his team trailing 31-24 and West Virginia in Tulane territory, Green Wave senior DE Paul Byrd tackled RB Jonathan Larson behind the line of scrimmage on 3rd and 2 and forced the Mountaineers to punt. The big defensive play gave Tulane the ball back with under two minutes remaining, leading to the game-tying touchdown drive.

Junior WR Ryan Jean won Player of the Game honors in what could very well have been his final appearance as a member of the Green Wave.
