What a way to end the season, nothing but thrilling activity throughtout that game.

Couldn't have asked for a better way to end his Tulane career there from Ryan Jean, should that be his last game.

Player of the game? Tim Wright. That was such a crucial pick. Another score by WVU would have easily ended that game. Yes, there were other important plays - missed field goals, couple big receptions - but a score there would have given you zero chance at a comeback.

Great Bowl win. sidenote: I was hoping CMU could pull of the victory in the National Championship.

Thanks brother...we've certainly had a knack for thrilling finishes lately.

No doubt about it man...That 4th quarter was one for the ages. I will remember this game 20 years from now.

Jean definitely stepped it up when he had to, just as he has his entire career. I have never been more nervous about simming ahead to the "Players Leaving" screen in my life. I am on vacation now and won't be able to do it for a few more days, but needless to say, I am on pins and needles about both his decision as well as junior CB Nate Hall's decision, our other MVP.

Agree - Wright was certainly a quiet hero and it was awesome to see him play such a pivotal role in his final appearance with Tulane. If he doesn't make that play, they probably go up three touchdowns, maybe more, and we'd have been deflated beyond repair. Nice catch by you.

Thanks GSU - That CMU-Oregon game went about the way I imagined. The Chippewas really benefited from a soft schedule and they just got out-classed against the Ducks. That said, CMU took full advantage of their fortunes this season, and heading into the off-season, they have the 24th rated recruiting class and a couple of nice 4-star QBs coming in. They should be around for awhile.

Appreciate all that great feedback fellas...looking forward to the off-season.

What a finish! That is how you wrap up a season my friend. That had to have been a heart stopping game against West Virginia. I was sad to see the ground game struggle so much but still just an overall fantastic game.

The future is looking really bright for the program and I think you make a National Championship run here in the next two years. Sadly, I think it is all but guaranteed that Ryan Jean leaves for the NFL at season's end. His game winning catch brought me back to the days of Reggie Moore and his catch against Penn State to win it all. It is those moments in this franchise report that I will never forget. Truly breathtaking.

Looking forward to another great offseason. Congratulations!

Thanks brother...That was really one of those games that really gets your juices flowing. I was in my man cave yelling from excitement and chest pounding in those closing moments. I can't remember the last time I had such a thrilling, satisfying win. After it ended, I must have uttered the word "wow" to myself a dozen times out of shock of just how much fun I had just had.

I agree with you - the time for us to strike is now. Hopefully we can pull in a good recruiting class to supplement the roster and really make a run at this thing. Improving the running game is paramount I believe and will be a key area of focus for us.

I haven't done the simulation just yet (been on vacation with wifey), but like you, I am not hopeful about Jean staying. If he did though - it would just be unfair to our opponents. LOL

As usual, I'll probably "slow play" this off-season and begin rolling out news in the next day or so.

Thanks as always for the great feedback my friend!

                        Green Wave News Clips

Spurrier didn't have much to say to the local media after cleaning out his office Sunday morning.

                        report courtesy Britt McHenry, ESPN.com

Tulane | O.C. Spurrier Jr. fired
                        Sun, 9 Jan 2022 06:12:01 -0700
Britt McHenry of ESPN.com reports that Tulane offensive coordinator Steve Spurrier Jr. was informed late Saturday night that he was being fired after two seasons with the Green Wave. Hired away from South Carolina in 2020, Spurrier Jr. was responsible for the implementation of the team's playbook and installing the team's weekly gameplans, though Wave head coach D. Geezy handled gameday play-call duties.

Citing the team's "inability to run the ball consistently" and "an over-reliance on big plays," McHenry was told by Geezy over a glass of wine at her condo in New Orleans that the team decided it was time to move on sometime towards the end of last season.

"At the end of the regular season, we were rated #103 in rushing offense and #73 overall, and that's just unacceptable, as is a 54% completion percentage in the passing game," said Geezy.

"The offense really felt like 'big play or bust' and that's not the way we want to do things. We particularly felt the effects of that over-reliance on big plays when WR Ryan Jean missed time earlier in the year and we could not move the football at all.

"We need to get back to being able to get first down after first down and sustain drives with high percentage passes and a sound running game. It will make us a more complete team and it will also benefit the defense."

Spurrier took a parting shot via Twitter late Saturday night, simply saying "We looked like an offense with a freshman at QB and two true freshmen in the lineup at receiver and somehow we were able to win 12 games yet apparently that wasn't good enough for him. It is what it is."

Geezy would not put a time-table on when a new hire would be made but did indicate that the team will continue to play a "similar pro style with ties to the West Coast offense."

"I think our offense suffered from a lack of available inventory of power running formations as well as a lack of quick, three step drop passing plays. Sure we could have had coach Spurrier simply draw up more plays, but we'd rather start anew.

"Don't get me wrong, we will still throw the ball and throw it a lot. Our issue is that when we do run the ball or when the big play is not there and we need to take our time moving the ball down the field, we need to do a better job in those areas and our next hire, when it is decided upon, will reflect that principle desire."

Tammy Nunez of the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports that Tulane junior star WR Ryan Jean (95 overall) has scheduled a press conference for the afternoon of Monday, January 10th. It is expected that the 6-6 211 pound phenom will announce his decision on whether he will enter the 2022 NFL draft or stay at Tulane for his senior season.

Jean, a former blue chip recruit from Eunice, Louisiana, is the Green Wave's all-time leading receiver, with 5,001 career receiving yards and 55 receiving touchdowns during his stay in New Orleans.

I had a feeling you would be playbook shopping this offseason. Spurrier's offense was fun to watch but like you said it felt too reliant on the big play. It was always feast or famine and with the departure of Ryan Jean feeling imminent, finding consistency will be of paramount. I am looking forward to seeing who you hire. Wine with Ms. McHenry is always a good afternoon too.

I would die of happiness to see Jean return but I think at this point that has to be considered a long shot of epic proportions. Fingers crossed all the same though.

I am excited to see what happens here. Even with the "expected" loss of Ryan Jean, the right system and this offense is going to be a point scoring machine that hopefully will not have the early season struggles we saw this past year.

Yeah....as the article points out, I made the new "offensive coordinator" decision during the final portion of the season. I found our offense to be a little too "Big play by Ryan Jean or bust," and that was especially evident during the 3 weeks he was out of the lineup and we averaged less than one offensive touchdown per game during that stretch. The playbook is very limited on short, quick passing plays that I like and I also found myself running the same 3 or 4 running plays every game (this REALLY hurts us when we have to play "tough man football" in bad weather). I am literally checking out about 8-10 different playbooks and I am very conflicted on which direction I will go.

Like you both, I see it as a longshot that Ryan Jean returns. If he does though, whoa - He'll be a 99 overall beast. I plan to FINALLY do that simulation later this morning and will have the update completed hopefully by the end of the day.

Thanks for checking in as always guys! You two in particular have been loyal followers of mine for a long time now and I really appreciate it.

By Tammy Nunez, Tulane beat reporter for Nola.com

Tulane WR Ryan Jean burst onto the scene as a true freshman in 2019, hauling in 89 receptions for a school single season record 1,946 yards and 21 touchdowns in his rookie campaign, putting the nation on notice and cementing himself as one of if not the premier receiver in college football. At his Monday press conference, two years later, the blue chip product out of tiny Eunice, Louisiana made an announcement most had already come to expect, letting the world know that he will be ending his storied collegiate career to enter the 2022 NFL Draft.

WR Ryan Jean exits Tulane with a school career record 5,001 receiving yards. His big play ability bailed the Green Wave offense out of tough predicaments throughout his career.

"This fall... this is very tough...this fall I'm going to take my talents to the next level and enter the NFL draft," said Jean in a prepared statement to start the media session.

"I want to be able to win Super Bowls and of course maximize my earnings. And I feel like I am ready to compete with the big boys.

"My career here ended with a walk-off touchdown in the Sugar Bowl in my home state. That's a storybook finish and I'd like to end my college career with that exclamation point."

Jean, who was rated the nation's #2 overall high school recruit in 2019, exits Tulane with a total of 228 receptions for a school career record 5,001 yards and 55 touchdowns despite playing with three different starting quarterbacks during his stay in New Orleans. His 62 receptions for 1,328 yards and 14 touchdowns this past season were all career-lows, however he missed three games due to a back injury which has since fully healed.

"I am excited for Ryan to take this next step," said Tulane head coach D. Geezy, who was attendance of the press conference.

"When we recruited him, he was a high school basketball player listed as an "athlete" prospect with less than a year of playing experience and he chose to stay at home and play college ball for us. He will be sorely missed. He has bailed us out on so many occasions. When we were struggling on offense or behind in fourth quarters of games, we would just chug up the deep ball to him and he'd win games for us single-handedly. We have some big shoes to fill on that side of the ball."

                                CB NATE HALL ALSO LEAVING

Jean wasn't the only big time player to announce his intent to leave Tulane a year early, as college superstar CB Nate Hall announced Monday morning via Twitter that he will also be entering the 2022 NFL Draft.

"All good things must come to an end. Goodbye Tulane, hello $$$," Hall tweeted.

CB Nate Hall's uncanny ball-hawking skills resulted in 31 interceptions and 11 defensive return touchdowns during his three years in New Orleans, both all-time NCAA records.
Hall's 31 career interceptions are an NCAA record, besting an approximately 70-year old record held by former Oregon DB Mike Watkins (1950-1952). The New Iberia, Louisiana product also holds the NCAA record for defensive return touchdowns with 10.

"All I have to say about Nate is that we have never had a cornerback like him during my 12 years here," said Geezy at Jean's press conference.

"His ability to always be in the right place at the right time and to not only track the football extremely well but also make the catch almost every time was amazing. He has some of the softest hands I have ever seen out of a DB and was really an offensive weapon for us on that side of the ball."

Hall, who was rated the nation's #1 overall high school cornerback prospect and #8 overall prospect in 2019, had his best season back in his sophomore campaign. That year, he caught 15 interceptions and returned 5 of them for touchdowns, both NCAA single season records.

Both he amd Jean are expected to be picked somewhere in the top 5 to 7 picks in April's draft, according to ESPN NFL Draft expert Todd McShay.

"These two players were both Tulane legends, two of the best we've had here," said Geezy.

"They belong in the same sentence as guys like QB Jamie Manning, RB Reggie Moore, and LB Mark Richards. #81 and #2 are going to be missed; you cannot replace guys like that."
