    Blue chip DE T.J. Pearson

Tulane | Blue chip DE Pearson commits
    Mon, 29 Aug 2022 8:45:01 -0700

    report courtesy Eve Jewell, TulaneInsider.com

Eve Jewell of TulaneInsider.com reports that Tulane has received a hard commitment from blue chip Mississippi DE T.J. Pearson (6-5, 220, 4.64 40 time, #1 rated DE) to sign a National Letter of Intent with the school next February. The Moss Point native is considered the #24 prospect in the country overall according to ESPN's recruiting rankings, and with current Green Wave starting DE Chad McGuire (89 ovr) set to graduate after this season, Pearson could be an immediate plug-and-play option next fall.

Pearson is the first ever blue chip defensive end acquired by Tulane.

Tulane | Team to wear its alternate, all-green uniforms versus Virginia Tech
    Mon, 29 Aug 2022 8:45:01 -0700
Tammy Nunez of the New Orleans Times Picayune reports that Tulane will wear its all-green uniforms in next week's home opener versus #8 Virginia Tech Saturday at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. The team will sport its alternate green helmets, green jerseys, and green pants, and has asked all Green Wave fans in attendance to wear green as well, as the team hopes to "green-out" the Dome for the pivotal, early season matchup.

Traditionally only worn for home games versus its three top rivals - Alabama, LSU, and Southern Miss - Green Wave head coach D. Geezy indicated that several members of the team asked to wear the all-green look as they seek to avenge last season's embarrassing 28-3 loss to the Hokies in Blacksburg.

      2022 Dynasty Rules Amendments

The following change will go into effect starting with game 2 of the 2022 season:

From this point forward each game on defense, I must play with any defensive lineman for 1 quarter, any linebacker for 1 quarter, any defensive back other than the free safety for 1 quarter, and the free safety for 1 quarter. It is completely my discretion each game as to who I will use and when.

Now that is how you kick off recruiting for the new season. Pearson looks like an absolute beast with a nice blend of size and speed. I expect him to be a day one starter. Also very cool that he is your first ever blue chip prospect at that position. Thinking back on it, over the years, I can't really recall you ever having a true standout at the defensive end position, but I am sure there are at least a few I am forgetting.

Heh...You are absolutely right, looking back on my departed players from each year on my front page, we indeed have never had a true big time DE. The recently graduated 4-star Paul Byrd (2018-2021) was the closest thing to it - he had a 10 sack season as a junior before falling off a cliff as a senior with just 5 last year. Ol' Mark Richards (2013-2015) was a beast, but he was more of a 3-4 rush linebacker than a true DE. He was also a 3-star guy, which of course added to his legacy.

It'll be interesting to see if we can finally get some dominance from that position out of Pearson. Needless to say, I was ecstatic about the instant commit from a blue-chipper out of the gates!

Game 2, Yr. 13 Preview (2022 season): #8 Virginia Tech Hokies at #4 Tulane Green Wave

            GAME 2 PREVIEW

            Courtesy

2021: Hokies DE Roosevelt Stewart taunts Green Wave center Reggie Maynard by flexing in his face following a big tackle behind the line of scrimmage during the closing moments of last year's blowout.

Last Meeting: In one of the more surprising game results of the 2021 college football season, then-19th ranked Virginia Tech completely demolished then-#5 Tulane in a 28-3 blowout last year in Blacksburg. After the Green Wave scored a first quarter field goal to grab an early 3-0 lead, the home-standing Hokies went on to score 28 unanswered points to give the Wave their first loss of the year followng a 6-0 start. Former Virginia Tech RB Chris Cook was the star of the night, gaining 145 yards and a touchdown during the lopsided affair and MLB Rico East's 49-yard interception return for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter made the score 28-3 and ended any hopes of a miracle comeback. Playing without former star WR Ryan Jean, who missed the contest due to injury, the game marked the only time ever that the Green Wave under head coach D. Geezy failed to score a touchdown during his 13-year tenure in New Orleans. The loss for the Wave dropped their all-time record versus the Hokies to 5-6.

2015: Late in the fourth quarter, Tulane QB Anthony High tossed a swing-screen pass to RB Anthony Barnett who raced passed defenders and plowed his way into the end zone for the game-clinching 22-yard touchdown which made the score 38-21 with 4:13 remaining.

Last Meeting at Venue: In what was Tulane's first ever BCS Bowl game appearance, the then-#3 ranked Green Wave knocked off then-#8 ranked Virginia Tech 38-21 in the Sugar Bowl to conclude the 2015 season. Despite an injury sustained early in the game by then-sophomore star RB Reggie Moore, the Wave offense got a big performance out of redshirt sophomore QB Anthony High, who threw for 300 yards and 4 touchdowns in what would be his final game as a member of the Wave. Then-true freshman and eventual star FS Dre Harris also had a big game, amassing 9 tackles while also returning an intercepted option pitch 26 yards for a touchdown as the Wave won the bowl game on its Mercedes-Benz Superdome home field.

            Starting Lineups/Key Players:

These two teams met for the first time all the way back in 1956, a game Tulane won 21-14.

            2021 Season Recaps:

: Virginia Tech enjoyed one of its best seasons in recent memory, finishing ranked #4 in the country with a 12-1 record, its only loss coming in a 35-21 week 3 defeat at the hands of eventual ACC Champion Georgia Tech. Due to an unfortunate set of circumstances, the Hokies failed to qualify for a BCS bowl and their season culminated with a 24-17 win over Georgia in the Chick-fil-A Bowl. The team returns only 4 starters on offense while returning 8 on defense.

: Tulane finished the 2021 campaign with a 12-2 record, winning the SEC for the 6th time in 7 seasons, shutting out Florida 20-0 in the conference's title game in what was just the team's second shutout ever under head coach D. Geezy. The team would go on to play an all-time classic Sugar Bowl, scoring a touchdown on the final play of regulation to tie the game before winning 37-34 over West Virginia in overtime. The team returns 10 of 11 starters on offense after losing its best player, WR Ryan Jean (95 ovr), while defensively they return only 5 starters.

            Schedules/Results:

            Head Coach D. Geezy's Take

Tulane head coach D. Geezy addressed the media after practice on Tuesday.

No need to beat around the bush here, this is one we have had circled on our calendars as soon as the schedule was released. After the showing we had at their place last year, we have had a bad taste in our mouths and that game is one that stayed with us mentally.

They're a little different team than the one last year, namely with a new signal caller in QB Kevin Palmer (87 ovr) and their 4-star true freshman RB Brandon Little (73 ovr), but outside of that pair, they're a veteran team.

Most significant, they have a lot of the same faces on defense from last year and we all remember what they did to us a year ago, becoming the first team ever to during my time here to not allow us to score a single touchdown. Their two defensive ends, Roosevelt Stewart (88 ovr) and Joey Williams (81 ovr) both gave us problems as well as their MLB Rico East (92 ovr) and we'll have to figure out how to keep those guys in check this time around.

If we played the way we did last week, we're in trouble. They have a very good football team and we'll need to bring our 'A' game as will our fans. We need that dome rocking Saturday night.

            - Tulane head coach D. Geezy

You know a large part of me secretly hopes the Hokies have a good showing but you look to be far better on paper. Their defense has a stout front seven but if you can spread them out and make them chase your speed I like your chances. It will be interesting to see how freshman tailback Brandon Little does. His success I think will really set the tone for their offense. Good luck my friend!

Sorry bro - we are out for blood in this one. I am pulling out all the stops and not holding back at all. They're getting my best effort. I have nightmares about that 28-3 massacre last season and now that they're stepping into our house, we have to return the favor.

The matchups I like in this one are of course Deuce versus their LBs in pass coverage. I also want to try to isolate one of my top 3 receivers on that slow strong safety Cole Sullivan somehow; we failed to do it last time we met.

I think they look very formidable on offense. Their QB and WR group are solid and that freshman RB Brandon Little is way better than his 73 overall rating states (his rating suffers a lot from having just a 48 AWR as a freshman, which has no bearing on played games I believe).

Really looking forward to this one. I want to beat these guys badly but I have a feeling this won't be a walk in the park!

RB Deuce Monroe dazzled the crowd in his first ever Mercedes-Benz Superdome appearance. Here, after replacing starting punt returner Tony Tompkins following back-to-back fumbles, the 5-8 175 pound speedster returns a second quarter punt 59 yards for a touchdown that gave his team a 14-0 lead. The punt return score was the first ever by the Green Wave under head coach D. Geezy.

True freshman RB Deuce Monroe goes bonkers as Tulane holds off late rally, avenges last year's humiliating defeat with 24-17 victory over Virginia Tech | 5-8 175 pound rookie finishes with 205 all-purpose yards and 2 touchdowns, including the team's first ever punt return score under head coach D. Geezy | Big plays down the stretch helps Green Wave notch its 52nd Mercedes-Benz Superdome win in their last 53 games | Team opens SEC play with trip down I-10 to face rival LSU next week in Baton Rouge

New Orleans, LA -- In the closing moments of last season's embarrassing 28-3 loss to Virginia Tech, Tulane head coach D. Geezy gathered his entire team on the sidelines in a huddle and explained to them that they needed to "remember this feeling and use it as fuel." On Saturday evening, his 4th ranked Green Wave finally got to vent out its pent up anger from that night last fall and got payback, holding off the 8th ranked Hokies for a 24-17 victory in their 2022 home opener.

The story of the game was the play of first year player Deuce Monroe. The 4-star true freshman from Boaz, Alabama electrified the home crowd, finishing the day with 205 all-purpose yards and 2 huge touchdowns that helped catapult the team to a 2-0 start to the season.

Tulane RB Deuce Monroe gets that dirt off his shoulder following his spectacular 62-yard touchdown reception that made the score 24-10 late in the fourth quarter.

Following a scoreless first quarter, Green Wave RB Buck Johnson III's 2-yard touchdown run capped off a 12-play 65-yard drive that lasted 4:19 and gave his team an early 7-0 lead. Later in the quarter, Monroe got unleashed.

After a first quarter muffed punt that was followed by a fumble on a later first half punt return by starting freshman RB Tony Tompkins, both recovered by Tulane, Geezy decided to replace Tompkins with Monroe as the punt returner. That decision paid immediate dividends, as on his very first punt return attempt late in the second quarter, the 5-8 175 speed demon made a spectacular spin move and darted through traffic on his way to a 59-yard touchdown that made the score 14-0. The punt return touchdown was Tulane's first ever during Geezy's 13-year career in New Orleans.

"That play was a thing of beauty and quite honestly, with our lack of luck over the years in the punt return game, it was kind of an out of body experience believe it or not," said Geezy.

"It wasn't the classic, straight shot return. He spun past the initial group of gunners, then cut across the field then had the kicker to beat and quickly cut through traffic before diving into the end zone.

"I have never heard our crowd as loud as it was when he crossed the goal line. Amazing."

Tulane would go on to kick a field goal in the third quarter that made it 17-0 before Virginia Tech followed it up with a field goal of their own that made it 17-3 going into the fourth quarter. That's when the Hokies offense, which had less than 100 yards of total offense through three quarters, finally emerged from its slumber.

Virginia Tech true freshman RB Brandon Little, who missed most of the first half with what sources say was a sprained Achilles, returned in the second half and lit up the Wave defense. His 74-yard touchdown in which he ran untouched right through the middle of the defense made the score 17-10 with 6:29 remaining, emphatically putting his team right back in the game. Little finished the game with 99 rushing yards on just 9 carries.

With his team up 17-10 with just 3:54 remaining and the Hokies facing a 4th and 2 deep in Green Wave territory, Tulane FS LeCharles Smith Jr. tackled RB Brandon Little behind the line of scrimmage, turning the ball over on downs back to the Wave.
Tulane would get the ball back, hoping to go on a long drive to melt clock and get a score to make it a two-possession game once again, however disaster struck. Facing a 3rd and 16, Wave sophomore QB Bryce Allen scrambled for a career-long 25-yard gain, however at the end of the run, the ball got jarred loose by Hokies CB David Knox and DT Walter Crenshaw recovered, giving their team the football back at the Green Wave 43-yard line with 4:46 remaining down 17-10.

Virginia Tech (0-1) quickly moved the ball into Tulane territory as they attempted to tie the game. However, Little would get stuffed behind the line of scrimmage by FS LeCharles Smith Jr. on a 4th and 1 option play, giving the Wave the ball back at its own 35-yard line with 3:54 remaining.

"We dodged a hell of a bullet there because they for damn sure had the momentum up to that point," said Green Wave defensive coordinator Steve Ellis.

Three plays later, in the words of the late Stuart Scott, it was "Mama there goes that man again." With his team facing a third and 7 in its own territory, desperately needing a big play to avoid giving Virginia Tech the ball back with them down by one touchdown, Allen dropped back to pass and was forced to check down to "that man" Monroe in the left flat. The young emerging star would catch the football and not only get a first down by spinning past Hokies CB Brian Williams, but would go on to burn the entire Hokies defense to score from 62 yards out, giving his team a 24-10 cushion. Monroe finished the game with 4 receptions for 104 yards, both game-highs, while Allen finished 14 of 22 for 208 yards.

With his team facing a 3rd and 7 with 2:35 remaining in the game, RB Deuce Monroe catches a pass in the flat, spins past Virginia Tech CB Brian Williams to get past the first down marker before out-racing everyone else on the Hokies defense on his way to a 62-yard touchdown that made the score 24-10 late.

The Hokies did not go away easily though. On the very next play from scrimmage following the big play by Monroe, Virginia Tech QB Kevin Palmer launched an 84-yard desperation heave that WR Cedrick Palmer was able to haul in and take in for a score that once again made it a one touchdown game at 24-17 with 2:22 to go. Palmer amazingly had just 45 passing yards up to that point, and finished the day just 10 of 23 for 129 yards. That would be the last time his team would possess the ball however.

After the Hokies elected not to attempt an onside kick with just over two minutes remaining, Tulane got the football back with a chance to force Virginia Tech to use its three timeouts and milk the clock - and that they did.

After back-to-back runs by Johnson III, Tulane faced a 3rd and 5. A spectacular 41-yard reception by TE Steven Carpenter in which he was able to hold onto the football up against the helmet of Virginia Tech FS Vince Burton gave Tulane a first down and forced the Hokies to call their last timeout with 2:01 to go, enabling his team to kneel on the ball and run out the clock.

The Tulane faithful shows love after watching their team win its 52nd game at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in their last 53 tries.

"We did not intend to go deep there. We wanted to try to hit a shallow-cross but it was covered well so Bryce threw it up to the clear-out guy Stevie-C downfield as somewhat of a last resort and it worked out," said first-year Tulane offensive coordinator Curtis Byrd.

The win for Tulane marked their 52nd in their last 53 games played at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, which had a school record 74,436 in attendance and was rated as ESPN the Magazine's sixth Toughest Place to Play in the nation before the season and has been a fixture in the annual listing for the past several seasons.

"This was another close win where we needed some magic to happen and it almost always seem to when we play here," said Geezy.

Tulane will travel to Baton Rouge next week to face arch-rival LSU in what will be both teams' SEC opener. The Green Wave blew out their in-state foes 35-7 last season at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

With several of his team's championship banners in the background, true freshman RB Deuce Monroe stands on the bench and salutes the crowd after what most believe was the first of many signature performances in his career.

QB Bryce Allen, WR Jason Mason and company had revenge on their minds as they prepared to walk onto the field at the start of the contest.

Senior RB Buck Johnson III didn't set the world on fire, however his finished with 82 rushing yards and a touchdown.

RB Brandon Little, who missed a significant portion of the first half with a sprained Achilles, returned in the second half and delivered this untouched 74-yard touchdown that made the score 17-10 early in the fourth quarter.

QB Bryce Allen faced tremendous pressure on this late 3rd and 7 and checked the ball down to RB Deuce Monroe, who turned the short pass into a 62-yard touchdown that made the score 24-10 late.

Tulane true freshman CB Tyler Harrison jumped as high as he could to try to swat away this fourth quarter deep pass, but it was to no avail as Hokies WR Cedrick Parham was able to haul it in for an 84-yard touchdown that made the score 24-17 with 2:22 to go.

Up 24-17 and facing a 3rd and 7 deep in Tulane territory with just 2:01 remaining, TE Steven Carpenter was able to corral this deep 41-yard reception, pinning the ball up against the helmet of Virginia Tech safety Vince Burton, giving his team a first down which allowed the Green Wave to run out the clock.
