Re: Protect the Nest - The Arizona Cardinals
The last time we saw the Arizona Cardinals they were getting smoked by the Cam Newton and the Panthers in the NFC Championship game. This year they aim higher with the goal of winning Superbowl 51. Can they do it this year and continue to build a team that con compete year after year? Let's see.---Comment

NFL free agency grades: Arizona Cardinals get 'A' for offseason work so far
By Senor Raiz on Mar 20, 2016, 7:00a

Chandler Jones
After the first wave of free agency, everyone wants to grade teams and see who is winning the offseason. The Arizona Cardinals started slowly, but made two moves that have the entire NFL watching -- trading for Chandler Jones and signing Evan Mathis.
Chris Wesseling of NFL.com gives them an A for their offseason work and says they did the best in the NFC West so far.
After pressuring Cam Newton on a season-low 20.7 percent of dropbacks in the NFC Championship Game, the Cardinals watched the Broncos' pass rush dominate the league's MVP en route to the Super Bowl 50 title. Coach Bruce Arians came away convinced that the most pressing offseason priority on an otherwise stacked roster was a disruptive edge rusher. Noting that "pass rushers don't grow on trees," general manager Steve Keim shipped draft bust Jonathan Cooper and a second-round pick to New England for 2015 Pro Bowler Chandler Jones. Colts coach Chuck Pagano quipped last month that "Von Millers ain't falling out of the sky." Arizona just added an athletic pass rusher with 30 sacks over the past three years, the same number Miller has posted over that span.
Not finished upgrading on defense, the Cardinals bolstered the secondary by importing Tyvon Branch, one of the league's stingiest cover safeties in 2015. On the other side of the ball, Keim tweaked the offensive line, replacing Cooper with savvy run-blocking guard Evan Mathis while allowing last year's first-round pick, D.J. Humphries, to replace Bobby Massie at right tackle. Beyond the new faces, the Cardinals also re-signed Chris Johnson, Jermaine Gresham and Drew Stanton. The NFC West's strongest team just got stronger. Grade: A
Arizona tried to add Jason Pierre Paul early, but held to their offer. He chose a return to the Giants. But you have to like what the Cardinals have done. They have a championship roster and they added two players where there was need.
I gave the Cards a C during the first week. Now they have added Jones and Mathis, you have to think it is much higher. Would you give the Cardinals an A as well?Last edited by djp73; 08-10-2016, 09:23 AM.---Comment

Arizona Cardinals 2016 Draft Grade
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap300...raise-eyebrows

Robert Nkemdiche
» Round 1: (No. 29 overall) Robert Nkemdiche, DT.
» Round 3: (92) Brandon Williams, CB.
» Round 4: (128) Evan Boehm, C.
» Round 5: (167) Marqui Christian, SS; (170) Cole Toner, OT.
» Round 6: (205) Harlan Miller, CB.
The Cardinals certainly aren't risk-averse under GM Steve Keim and coach Bruce Arians. The team's ultra-confident leaders have a knack for getting maximum production from enigmatic prospects, which is why the Robert Nkemdiche pick didn't come as a surprise to the scouting community. The freakishly athletic defender flashes a rare combination of size, strength and explosiveness for a 6-foot-3, 294-pounder. Yes, his pedestrian numbers and potential character concerns made him a tough evaluation for some observers, but the Cardinals snagged a Darnell Dockett clone with tremendous upside as an interior disruptor. Brandon Williams is an intriguing prospect as a converted cornerback with limited experience. The former running back possesses the speed and athleticism to run with receivers down the field, but he must refine his fundamentals and footwork to become more effective on underneath coverage. Cornerback Harlan Miller could surprise as a late pick. The Southeastern Louisiana product has the length and temperament to thrive in the Cardinals' aggressive scheme. Training camp preview: Cardinals' culture all the rage
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap300...e-all-the-rage
By Conor Orr Around The NFL Writer Published: July 11, 2016 at 12:24 p.m. Updated: July 12, 2016 at 08:25 a.m.

Bruce Arians
Training camp is quickly approaching, which means it's time to preview the most exciting part of the summer. Over the next month, Around The NFL's Conor Orr will break down all 32 teams and give us something to look for in late July.
Today, we take a look at the Arizona Cardinals. Click on the tabs above to see other NFC West camp previews.
Training camp report dates: Rookies July 25, veterans July 28.
Training camp location: University of Phoenix Stadium, Glendale, Arizona.
Offseason in a nutshell: Until they post a losing season under SuperCoach Bruce Arians, the Cardinals will float in that beautiful, hazy stratosphere that certain NFL teams reach. No decision is a bad one. Every move made is such a classic [Pick name: Arians/Belichick/Carroll/Gettleman] move. So trading for troubled but massively productive defensive end Chandler Jones? Great. Bringing back Chris Johnson and "All Or Nothing" star Red Bryant? Even better. Cutting ties with former first-round pick Jonathan Cooper instead of moving him to center? Why not? An NFL team's culture is good until it isn't, and right now, the Cardinals are riding quite high.
Player to watch: Wide receiver Michael Floyd. Widely believed to be the next wide receiver to get paid, Floyd hopefully will spread his wings this offseason and truly declare himself as the Cardinals' most consistent pass catcher. Larry Fitzgerald isn't going anywhere, but Floyd can be dominant -- and the Cardinals are waiting for the next-level, top-10-in-production type of season to take hold. Sometimes, you can see it coming early on in training camp.
THREE BURNING QUESTIONS:
1. Will Evan Mathis put this offensive line over the hump?
The Cardinals had some of the most underrated offensive linemen in football last year, but adding an experienced guard in Mathis -- one who should have been named in NFL Network's "Top 100 Players of 2016" -- unquestionably puts Arizona in new territory on paper. The team now pairs Mathis with perennial Pro Bowl guard Mike Iupati and rangy, powerful tackles Jared Veldheer and D.J. Humphries.
2. Will Matt Barkley play his way onto a different NFL roster?
This team is cautious about its quarterback choices -- especially after seeing how bare the cupboard can get beyond Drew Stanton -- so is there a reason to let Barkley go? Quarterback movement is fascinating late in the preseason, and it's one of the ways teams can immediately get better before the start of the regular season. Look for the former would-be first-round pick to try to stake his claim on a backup spot somewhere else, even if he might be better served working another year under QB guru Arians.
3. Will Bruce Arians give us what we want in camp?
Inside-run periods are understandably limited during training camp due to injury, but we can hopefully get a sneak preview of this offensive line thudding against rookie first-round pick Robert Nkemdiche, Chandler Jones, Calais Campbell, Red Bryant, Frostee Rucker and the rest. Goodness gracious. There might not be a better intra-squad matchup this summer.
Way-too-early season prediction: Like we said before, the Cardinals have one of the best cultures in the NFL -- until they don't. Arians doesn't seem to be going anywhere, and this team is good enough to win another 13 games this season.Last edited by djp73; 08-10-2016, 09:23 AM.---Comment

The first depth chart, 2016
Posted by Darren Urban on August 8, 2016 – 11:19 am
The Cardinals’ first game is Friday night against the Raiders, so that means the first depth chart of the season was put out today. As always, it’s a preseason depth chart, and there is a ton of wiggle room in what it says and what happens once the games start and who plays on the field.
That said, it’s always interesting to take a look at where the players are at this point.
— On offense, there is nothing really wacky. The starters, given what Bruce Arians has said about both A.Q. Shipley and D.J. Humphries, are as expected. Perhaps the only notable thing is that, as of now, tryout rookie Chris Hubert — who has flashed multiple times in practice — is ahead of veteran Brittan Golden at one of the wideout positions (behind Fitz and Jaron Brown.)
— On defense, even though Ed Stinson has been with the first-unit much of the offseason and camp, it is Rodney Gunter listed as a starter with Calais Campbell, and the now-injured Corey Peters as the starting nose tackle. Given the depth at the defensive line, the rotation will show starting means little since so many guys will be moved in and out.
— Brandon Williams, the rookie, is the starter at cornerback opposite Patrick Peterson. That’s not a surprise since Justin Bethel has been hurt for so long. Bethel hasn’t been on the field to play since the NFC Championship, although he should be close to a return.
— At safety, something to watch. The starters are the injured Tyrann Mathieu, and he is backed up by Tony Jefferson. The strong safety starter right now is listed as D.J. Swearinger, ahead of Tyvon Branch. Before the offseason, you would’ve thought Branch or Jefferson would be penciled in there, but it is Swearinger right now. As much as the Cards have had to figure out their cornerback situation, their safety spot — especially with rookie Marqui Christian making strides — is pretty strong. There might have to be a tough choice made there too, especially once Mathieu is considered healthy.
Here’s the whole chart:

Five Arizona Cardinals Whose Stock has Declined Since Start of Camp
A look at three players who are now fighting for a roster spot and two others who are further down on the initial Arizona Cardinals depth chart than expected.

Brittan Golden
A look at three players who are now fighting for a roster spot and two others who are further down on the initial Arizona Cardinals depth chart than expected.
With the initial Arizona Cardinals depth chart being released, we have our first real idea of players that are one the bubble.
The thing is, that can change on a dime with one poor performance in the pre-season, and the Arizona Cardinals open up the pre-season in three days against the Oakland Raiders.
So let's take a look at the five players whose stock has declined since the start of camp for the Arizona Cardinals.
Brittan Golden: The wide receiver has been on the Arizona Cardinals roster for almost two years now, playing in 21 games since 2013, spending 2014 on the practice squad.
He had seemed like a fairly safe bet to make the roster, until Chris Hubert got here. Now, he is fighting for a spot and Hubert has really impressed.
Josh Mauro: The question before camp was Ed Stinson or Josh Mauro? Now, the question is Red Bryant or Josh Mauro, as I do no see Robert Nkemdiche not making this roster.
Mauro is listed as the third string defensive tackle on the left side behind Rodney Gunter and Frostee Rucker.
Can Mauro fend off the veteran Bryant?
Gabe Martin: Before camp started, it seemed like Martin was in a great position to make the roster. The depth at inside linebacker was thin, with only four names: Bucannon, Minter, Fua and Martin. Now, with the addition of Donald Butler and Chris Clemons working at the dollar backer position, Martin is third on the dollar backer chart, and likely will find himself on the outside looking in, unless something more comes of the Chris Clemons story.
While the first three players are battling for a position on the final 53 man roster, these next two are interesting just where they are listed on the depth chart.
Justin Bethel: The talk all of the off season was who was going to be the veteran cornerback brought in to push Bethel. Now, it is Brandon Williams, the rookie from Texas A&M who is poised to breakthrough as the starter opposite Patrick Peterson. Could Bethel find himself as the fourth cornerback, with Tyvon Branch getting the slot reps until Mathieu is back to 100%?
This is going to be a hell of a fight to watch.
Tony Jefferson: I wrote three weeks ago how it seems like no one thinks Jefferson is a starter, despite the fine work he does on the field, and the initial depth chart has him as the second string free safety behind Tyrann Mathieu.
That is not surprising, but when you look at the fact that D.J. Swearinger is the starting strong safety and Tyvon Branch is going to get the bulk of the reps as the next safety on the field, it is a bit puzzling to see Jefferson down that low.Last edited by djp73; 08-10-2016, 09:28 AM.---Comment

Re: Protect the Nest - The Arizona Cardinals
Will be following this for sure, definitely interested to see what you do at QB when Palmer retires.
Also do you plan on using real life draft classes or game generated ones?Comment
