Madden NFL 17 Review (Xbox One)

Decent write up, but I don't trust OS reviews too much. Pretty much every Madden they have reviewed has received between a 7.5 and 8.5, to include last year that got an 8. If this is no better than last year, and knowing EA it won't be, I'll once again be upset that I bought into the laziest sports game maker on the planet once again.

Apologies that we're not trustworthy or legit. We'll, uh, try to do better in the future?

I wouldn't look too much into number scores to gauge if one year is better than the other.

The best reviewer is yourself if you trust them.

This Madden seems to be getting good scores around the net, so, I don't see where OS is different vs "all the other sites."

Also, we can't have reviews that constantly scale upwards. Just because the review has the same score, that doesn't mean they are just as good as one another.

I'll put it this way, and I'm sure Chris (who reviewed M16), will agree: Madden 17 is a vastly better game than 2016. They were both a step up from their predecessor.

EA Access is the closest you're going to get to a pre-release demo, for better or worse.

If the game 'feels' like NCAA 14 does, this goes from a pass to a buy for me.

Madden has "felt" better than NCAA since Madden 15. I ran an online dynasty for several year with NCAA 14, and came back to Madden grudgingly. Some of my old pals started up a new NCAA 14 dynasty, and I dropped out after a couple of weeks. It sucked going back to NCAA 14.

As a side note, we're not striving to be in the aggregate, or even thinking about it. I get frustrated when people call out an outlet for having a score that's high or low based on the aggregate because why is that a negative in a vacuum? These are singular opinions, variance should be a thing. I get agreeing or disagreeing with a review, but if one outlet gave the game a 6 and seven others gave it an 8, it doesn't mean the 6 score is inherently wrong or crazy.

Some people just don't like Madden no matter what, and that's fine. Others defend Madden no matter what, and that's fine. But like with every opinion, it's a single opinion and if you want to get hung up on outlier scores you'll be miserable -- especially if you don't factor in what was actually said.

Might have missed it in the review but any noticeable improvements to penalties? My main issue has been with pass interference calls that are rarely called. I hate having a receiver run into a defender and being unable to make a play on the ball, because the defender essential become a barrier, and no flag being thrown.

this is what i want to know, before I buy. no mention of improved penalty calls leading up to the game or in the review.

I really liked the review it made me want the game even more I digitally pre-ordered and I can't wait till Monday night at 11 pm cst whn I'll fire up my PS4 and get on some MUT untill A&S drops his sliders

I love the site, don't get me wrong. Maybe it's just me but it seems like all major sports games here get a 7.5 or higher. Honestly I haven't liked a copy of Madden in a number of years, but buy it because it's football. I almost wish someone would have said "it's the same garbage you hated last year" the last ten years, but being honest I know that and I buy it anyway.

Hey Bez, I'm interested in hearing some of the legacy issues you're seeing. While not attributing them directly to "legacy issues", I definitely saw some problems that have existed in prior games (i.e. Running backs slamming into the O line and falling down).

Why in the world don't RB's push off of the O-linemen when running into them? How many years are they going to let go by before they address this? I'm sorry to sound negative but if baffles my mind how some of these glaring issues aren't fixed by now. I hate to bring it up but 2K5 had RB's pushing off lineman over a decade ago & you mean to tell me Madden has yet to figure this out? The sad part is Madden actually has a push off mechanic in the game but it doesn't trigger when it should smh. I love to run the ball & this is one aspect that I can't stand about Madden along with players just falling down on phantom contact. This type of stuff should not still be happening in 2016.

Yeah based on that demographic the number of penalties called in head to head isn't going to change anytime soon.

Total shame - head to head being a separate arcade mode needs to change. A certain basketball title doesn't do this - why does Madden.
