Well he won the ground judge over, you probably won the striking judge.

The overall judge might have felt he done enough to win.

Did he have a bunch of time in top control or dominant clinch?

Octagon control is also important. If he is in the center the whole time while you're backing up it might be crucial. I remember fighting supreme_bananas a few times and he was "robbed" twice against me. He had more strikes and dominated actually but while I was in the center of the octagon the whole time he had his back against the cage quite often. That's what got me the decision.

Yup, recently happened to me again. Was using Travis Browne vs. Cain Velasquez.

0 takedowns, 0 clinch attempts, 0 knockdowns. I outstruck him 4 to 1 in all 5 rounds, significant strike 28% vs 73%, but because I was backing up in order to stay at range I lost a 49-46UD. I was pissed

Looks like a close fight. Round 1 to you. Round 2 to him. Round 3, you won the striking battle but he got a takedown. Without watching round 3, its hard to tell.

Its also possible it was seen as a draw and you lost the dice roll.

I'd also like to point out that the judge scoring didn't change in the last patch.

He wasnt suggesting that. Decisions are far more prevalent since the patch, because it is harder to end the fight.
