SCEA San Diego Employees Laid Off, MLB The Show Unaffected

A big round of layoffs has hit SCEA San Diego, with a reported 50 employees laid off today.

"Sources close to the studio have confirmed that approximately 50 employees have been laid off, and that the layoffs impact both studio execs and regular employees alike. Sony San Diego Studio was also previously responsible for producing Guns Up and Drawn to Death, two online games on PS4.

No clear reason for the layoffs was given at this time, but our sources say that Sony appears to be moving away from live games development. A separate source believes that the developers behind MLB: The Show are still with the company."

There are rumors The Show team was not affected by the move -- but we have no concrete information to validate those at this time. With The Show being such a banner product, it would be quite a strange and unexpected move if there was movement to shrink or eliminate the dev team.

Update: It looks like 'normal' restructuring. The Show team is fine!

"We can confirm there has been a reduction in headcount at San Diego Studio," a representative said. "The team working on MLB The Show have not been affected. We continually evaluate teams and programs at SIE Worldwide Studios to ensure we have the proper resources in place to deliver innovative products within a competitive landscape. As projects are completed, it is natural to review and restructure teams around current and future needs. We wish our departing team members success as they pursue new opportunities and we have nothing but heart-felt thanks for their contributions to PlayStation."
Definitely a bummer to hear of anyone losing their job though, we're wishing those looking for new jobs today luck in their future endeavors.

That would make sense since The Show has been a system seller for them. They must make enough to justify keeping that part of the office open.

Hope it is not true. It would suck if the Show did not come out next year but it also would be sad for the devs being laid off. Hope they could find another home elsewhere if the rumors are true. I truly believe that the devs of the show were the poster child for community interaction when it comes to gaming.

So The Show is safe. Still, sympathies go out to those who were affected. Never an easy time losing your job.

My heart stopped for a moment seeing the headline... good to hear The Show team is still going strong though!

I guess few jobs are stable or long-term these days. Good luck to those who will be seeking new opportunities!

This stinks on multi-levels , majorly for those laid off and their families , and minorly for those who enjoy the Show and want to see further enhancements . We may have to be content with a 'roster update' for 17 until Sony can get their house in order and work on a better business model . I hope this is just a minor bump in the road and Sony can get back to a full compliment of personnel and keep the Show evolving into a deeper baseball experience .

Sympathies to everyone that got the bad news today at Sony. Only silver lining in this news is at least we at least don't lose the best sports game on the market. In my opinion at least.

Glad MLBTS staff is safe, but feel bad for those who lost their jobs. Very difficult times we've been living in these last several years. Hopefully things improve for our citizens here in the US very soon, as well as the rest of the world for that matter.
