COACH GEEZY IN THE BIG EASY PART III: LEGACY | FROM BOURBON ST. TO THE BAYOU -
Re: Tearz49ers presents: In Pursuit of Perfection (NCAA Football '14)
***********

After another hot start under head coach Mark Stoops, Kentucky went on to finish last season 5-7 and missed out on a bowl appearance. The Wildcats hope that 2016 will be the year that the program takes that next step and quarterback Drew Barker must lead the way. The offense won't miss a beat this year with returning the most starters on that side of the ball in, the most in fact in the whole SEC conference, however the defense must make strides under coordinator D.J. Eliot to keep the momentum going for the full season .
Previewing the Kentucky Offense in 2016:
Kentucky will play with its third difference offensive coordinator in three seasons this fall, but the arrival of new co-offensive coordinators Eddie Gran and Darin Hinshaw from Cincinnati has lead to renewed optimism about the direction the offense is going in after a season of struggles under Shannon Dawson. The new UK assistants inherit a strong nucleus of young talent with nine of eleven starters from the last season finale back on campus for the 2016 season.
Drew Barker is the offs-on favourite to start at quarterback for the Wildcats this season after completing 23-of-70 passes for 364 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in his five games last year. He is joined by a triple-header at the running back position featuring junior All-SEC contender Boom Williams, senior Jojo Kemp and sophomore Mikel Horton. Tight end C.J. Conrad figures to take on a larger role after earning SEC All-Freshman honours in 2015.
The biggest key to a successful season on offense for Kentucky will happen if the passing attack becomes more efficient and effective. There's no excuse to not be better considering the experience the team has at the receiver position and the help at running back. The offensive line gave up thirty sacks last season, but it should be better after breaking in several young blockers last season.
Previewing the Kentucky Defense in 2016:
Kentucky's defense boasts little of the returning expereince that the offense can lean on this year.
The Wildcats return just one full-time starter in the front seven, and the returning defensive lineman and linebackers accounted for just 2.5 sacks last season. Following the dismissal of senior outside linebacker Jason Hatcher, sophomores Denzil Ware and Josh Allen will need to take on much of the pass-rushing burden.
Courtney Love (Nebraska) and De'Niro Laster (Minnesota) are a pair of transfers who could be key in replacing some of the lost production from 2015. Love has been hailed as the defense's new leader and will be particularly important in leading the way for an inside linebacking group that has almost no starters returning.
The strength of the defense is the secondary, where the Wildcats return almost the entire two-deep, led by SEC All-Freshman corner Chris Westry. Seniors Blake McClain, Marcus McWilson and J.D. Harmon should add a veteran presence to support what could be four sophomore starters.
The defense as a whole needs to be more aggressive this season; Last season as a unit they only recorded 17 sacks and 10.5 of those sacks have now left the program and will need to be replaced. Ten of those sacks came in the Wildcats first five games, and four of them later against Charlotte so that means just three sacks were generated in six other games games- Lets put it this way, it can't happen again in 2016.
Previewing the Kentucky Special Teams in 2016:
Kicking proved a significant problem for Kentucky in 2015, with former All-SEC place kicker Austin MacGinnis battling a nagging groin injury and senior punter Landon Foster posting the worst season of his Wildcats career. Foster has now graduated , but MacGinnis returns and it has been reported that he is back to being 100% healthy. Freshman punter Grant McKinniss, who was rated as a four-star recruit by Scout.com, will need to make an immediate impact.
The return game has added little excitement so far during Mark Stoops tenure, but Sihiem King showed potential on kickoffs and who knows, maybe the Wildcats will become more dynamic in this area in 2016.
Final Analysis
Gran’s Cincinnati offense posted video-game numbers, ranking sixth nationally in passing yards (359.9) and total yards (537.8) per game. Kentucky may need its offense to find similar success to make up for massive turnover on defense. After back-to-back 5–7 seasons that featured second-half collapses, the Wildcats have all eyes set on reaching their first bowl game since 2010. The schedule is never easy in the SEC, but home games against South Carolina, Vanderbilt and Mississippi State combined with the returning talent on offense offer hope Stoops can reach his first bowl game this fall.

ALABAMA LEADS THE WAY AS COLLEGE FOOTBALL DRAWS NEAR

Alabama will looks to repeat in 2016, but can the nations best player stop that this time around!
Alabama finished last season atop the college football world after beating Clemson in the College Football Playoff title game. The Crimson Tide have a strong chance to end this season in the same spot. That's the best explanation for why the Alabama is No. 1 in our preseason rankings. Coach Nick Saban's crew will face plenty of competition, though, starting with two ACC powerhouses (No. 2 Clemson, No. 3 Florida State), a Big Ten heavyweight on the rise (No. 4 Michigan) and a familiar SEC West foe (No. 5 LSU).
All of those teams look like safe bets to factor into the playoff conversation, but the national pecking order is less clear after that. Will Oklahoma (No. 6) emerge from the Big 12 to make another appearance in the national semifinals? Can Ohio State (No. 9) reload after enduring heavy losses to the NFL draft this off-season? Is either Washington (No. 7) or Tennessee (No. 10) capable of living up to the preseason hype? There are more questions than answers right now, but don't worry: The start of the season is just a few weeks away.
For the third consecutive year, Alabama will build an offense around a first-year starting quarterback. It's also the first time since 2008 when the Crimson Tide won it all that they will not return either of their two top rushers from last season.
Don't be fooled by the short list of returning starters on defense either. Linebackers Tim Williams and Ryan Anderson, nose guard Da'Ron Payne played plenty as part of a ridiculously deep front seven rotating last season during Alabama's national title run. With Jonathan Allen, Williams and Anderson, this may be the tides best group of pass rushers in the Saban era.
DeShaun Watson (5,299 yards of total offense in 2015) is a Heisman Trophy favorite with most of his weapons back, and in addition the Tigers have Mike Williams (1,030 receiving yards in 2014), who missed nearly all of '15 with a neck injury. Make no mistake, this offense is loaded.
On the other side of the ball, the Tigers must retool again, especially up front, where departed defensive ends Shaq Lawson and Kevin Dodd combined for 49 tackles for loss in 2015. Cordrea Tankersley (five interceptions in 2015) should emerge as a shutdown corner.

The Sooners are set at quarterback with Heisman candidate Baker Mayfield and the best running back tandem in the country, but they’ll have to replace Sterling Shepard’s 86 catches and two offensive linemen, including three-year starting right guard Nila Kasitati. Developing a go-to receiver (or two) will be a top priority in fall camp.
Gone are all the big-time playmakers from the best defense in the 2015 Big 12 (just 364.5 yards per game for opponents), including all-conference cornerback Zack Sanchez, who picked off seven passes in 2015. The linebacking corps is young and inexperienced, which means true freshman Caleb Kelly, a five-star prospect from Fresno, will have to live up to the hype.

Bruising back Leonard Fournette, the nation’s most explosive rusher, returns to gallop behind a steady offensive line alongside wideouts Malachi Dupre and Travin Dural. But this group’s potential lies on the shoulders of inconsistent quarterback Brandon Harris, who completed just 53.6% of his throws in 2015.
LSU’s deep secondary features five players with starting experience, including talented safety Jamal Adams (four interceptions in 2015). Expect more versatility up front in coordinator Dave Aranda’s 3-4 scheme, allowing skilled ends Lewis Neal and Arden Key to stand up in pass-rush situations.
2016 Conference Winner Predictions:
-- ACC: Clemson
-- Big XII: Oklahoma
-- American: Houston
-- Big Ten: Ohio State
-- Conference USA: Midd Tenn State
-- MAC: Western Michigan
-- MWC: Boise State
-- Pac-12: Stanford
-- SEC: Alabama
-- Sun Belt: UL Lafayette

Kentucky puts up 637 yards of total offense| Drew Barker passes for four touchdowns and no picks | As a defensive unit, the Wildcats sacked Nick Mullens five times
LEXINGTON, Kentucky -- The Kentucky Wildcats spread out around Commonwealth Stadium to celebrate on the program's most dominant wins in College Football.
A seventeen point second-quarter made winning seem all the more likely for the Wildcats after going into the quarter down 10-3 thanks to a Stephen Brauchie field goal and a 13 yard connection between Nick Mullens and Ito Smith, the Wildcats answered back though with thirty one unanswered points split between the second quarter (17) and the third quarter (14).
When Stanley "Boom" Williams added two rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter the game was already over and essentially you could have blamed the Wildcats offense for just padding the stats late in the game.
QB Drew Barker was about as perfect as he could be passing the ball today
"I'm really proud of just the fight and determination that our players showed," Wildcats coach Mike Stoops said after the game. "They just kept digging, kept fighting and it was a great win."
Despite the early deficit, Kentucky always looked in control with both their offense and defense running like a well oiled machine. Drew Barker threw touchdown passes of 8, 54, 29 and 40 yards on five different drives, only a 36 yard field goal from Austin MacGinnins split up the touchdown drives. Barker would finished the game with career numbers passing for 317 yards and those four touchdowns, he also added 40 yards on 9 carries.
Barker was just part one of what proved to be a "Triple Header" in the Kentucky offense that put up 637 yards on the Souther Miss defense (a school record); Stanley Williams and JoJo Kemp III combined for 33 carries for 239 yards and two touchdowns. Williams would lead the team with 17 carries but it was Kemp who had the most yardage on the ground with 135 yards.
"My mindset didn't really change," said Williams. "We started slower than I expected but then the line were just opening hole and hole for both of us and we utilised that to the best we could."
As for Southern Miss, their running game wasn't even part of their gameplan today. Ito Smith had more touches of the ball when receiving than he did carrying the ball today; Smith would contribute 12 receptions for 104 yards and two touchdowns in the air but would only carry the ball 7 times for 30 yards.
Nick Mullens did his part for the Golden Eagles though despite the heavy deficit, Mullens would pass for 217 yards and two touchdowns.
Southern Miss head coach Jay Hopson was coaching his first game for the Golden Eagles and he was clearly disappointed with how the game panned out for his team.
"We started well, but we imploded after the first quarter," Hopson said. "That's on both sides of the ball. The offense forgot to score and the defense just rolled over and wanted their tummy's rubbed and Kentucky just steamrolled on through."
Whilst the Kentucky defense didn't register a single turnover, they did register five sacks which combined with the lost yardage proved just as good as a turnover. The standout defensive player today though came in the form of DE Adrian Middleton who got to Mullens three times, two other sacks were spread between Courtney Love and J.D. Harmon.
The Wildcats visit No. 24 Florida next Saturday in hopes of ending a 29-game losing streak to the Gators -- not to mention, annual media questions about it. Kentucky has come close the past two years and aims to finally seal the deal in the nationally televised game at The Swamp.
