2017 SEASON - WEEK 14

BILLS PULL OUT WILD ONE

Newcomer J.J. Nelson returned this kickoff 89 yards to win it for the Bills.

12/10/17
Buffalo, NY (AP) - The Buffalo Bills pulled off an improbable comeback on Sunday afternoon, rallying from a 17-0 hole and pulling out a 41-34 victory over the Miami Dolphins in downtown Buffalo. Newcomer J.J. Nelson returned a kickoff 89 yards for a score just moments after the Dolphins had tied the game late in the fourth quarter, to send the Bills to their ninth victory on the season.

Adolphus Washington comes through with a strip sack of Ryan Tannehill in the closing moments to seal the victory.
This one did not start out well for the Bills, falling behind 17-0 just 8:38 into the game. Ryan Tannehill hit Jordan Cameron on a 43 yard score on the opening possession. He then ran an option keeper for 27 yards on the ensuing possession. Jack Nails would add a 48 yard field goal and it looked like this one was going to be a blowout for the Dolphins.

Karlos Williams would get the Bills going as he ran untouched 55 yards for a score on the Bills next possession. But the extra point was blocked and the Bills trailed 17-6 after one quarter.

Jordan Cameron would get his second touchdown of the game on a 24 yard pass from Ryan Tannehill on Miami's next possession and the lead was up to 18.

Tyrod Taylor would quickly move the Bills down the field and hit Sammy Watkins on a beautiful 41 yard strike to cut the Dolphins lead to 24-13. But the Bills defense had no answers for Miami in the first half. They went 79 yards in nine plays and score as rookie Sheldon Evans ran it in from seven yards out. It was Evans 15th touchdown on the year and put the Dolphins up 31-13.

Watkins and Taylor would hook up again late in the half, as he caught a short slant in the end zone to cut the Miami lead to 11 at the break in a wild first half. Miami outgained Buffalo 356-195 in the first half with Ryan Tannehill going 21 for 25 for 292 yards and two touchdowns. The Bills came into the game with the second ranked defense in the NFL.

But Coach Stott would make halftime adjustments and the Dolphins offense, ranked 32nd coming into the game, returned to form in the second half. The Bills would get the only points in the third on a Dan Carpenter 39 yard field goal.

Miami's offense then began to turn the ball over. First it was Sheldon Evans fumbling the ball at midfield. The Bills could not cash in though as Karlos Williams was stopped on a fourth and three run at the Miami 10 yard line. Ryan Tannehill's next pass was intercepted by Aaron Williams at the Miami 27 yard line. 10 plays later, the Bills had to settle for a Dan Carpenter 19 yard field goal to cut the Miami lead to 31-26.

Two plays later, Reggie Ragland blew up Sheldon Evans in the backfield and forced another fumble. This time it was LeVeon Chavous who jumped on the loose ball at the Miami 30. Three plays later, Tyrod Taylor hit Stanley Holcombe for a nine yard touchdown pass and the Bills took their first lead. Taylor would run it in for the two point conversion and the Bills led 34-31. It was Holcombe's first NFL touchdown.

The Dolphins would finally get their offense back in gear as they drove 62 yards in nine plays. But a huge third down drop from Leonte Carroo made the Dolphins settle for a 29 yard game tying field goal from Jack Nails with 2:25 left.

That set the stage for J.J. Nelson. He was just signed on Tuesday as a free agent to replace the injured Marquis Goodwin. He took the kickoff and returned it 89 yards for a score as Wegman's Field erupted and the Bills went up 41-34.

Ryan Tannehill would have one final chance. He drove Miami from their own 25 down to the Buffalo three yard line with :11 seconds left. On first down, Adolphus Washington broke free and strip sacked Tannehill with LeVeon Chavous coming up with the recovery and sealing the win.

"This was big for us," said Coach Stott afterwards. "We had lost two straight and our confidence was beginning to dip. To pull this one out, against a rival like Miami, is huge."

Miami (2-10-1) lost their sixth straight. The win leaves the Bills two games ahead of New England in the AFC East with three games left. But the Bills will travel to Carolina to take on the first-place Panthers next week, then return hom eon short rest for a Thursday night game against San Diego, who leads the AFC.

Notes: The Bills escaped injury free. The 552 yards for Miami was a season high allowed for the Bills. The win was BUffalo's third straight over Miami.
