CATHEDRAL SPARTANS MOVING UP TO FBS, JOINING SUN BELT

Cathedral, a private university based out of Atlanta, Georgia, has announced it is leaving the Colonial Athletic Association to join the Sun Belt in 2013.

The Spartans, who began exploring football in 2006, played their inaugural season as an FCS Independent in 2009. They join the FBS ranks with a compiled record of 10-23 under head coach George Pasey.

"I am very excited to embark on a new chapter of our football program in the Sun Belt Conference," Cathedral chancellor Francis Gerney said. "Our student-athletes have earned the opportunity to participate at this level and we welcome the new academic and athletic relationships that will develop as a result of this partnership."

Cathedral will begin playing Sun Belt games and will be a revenue-sharing member of the conference in 2013 and be allowed to compete for the conference title. However, the Spartans will not be eligible to play in a bowl game until 2014.

The Georgia Dome, where Cathedral has played their home games since 2009. The Spartans have begun construction on their home field, honored as Father Dalmoro Stadium, which is expected to be completed in preparation for the 2014 season.

CATHEDRAL DEFEATS SAMFORD IN FIRST GAME AS FBS MEMBER

Michael Kane-Polsen and George Pasey Jr. teamed up to make history on top of history as Cathedral won its FBS debut, defeating Sanford by the score of 42-0 Saturday at the Georgia Dome.

The Spartans outplayed Samford from the opening kickoff and never took their foot off the gas. George Pasey Jr., son of head coach George Pasey and an LTU graduate transfer, found an early connection with wide receiver Michael Kane-Polsen which led to an end result of four touchdown receptions - breaking his own school record. Pasey also broke a record as his five touchdowns (to one interception) etched out former starter Devron Fritz.

What It Means: The victory goes down as Cathedral's first as a member of the FBS, and for head coach George Pasey, the win registers in as his first career shutout during his four seasons in Atlanta.

Quotable: "You look at this win against a lower-division opponent and you think, 'shoot, that was supposed to happen'. CATHEDRAL DOWNS CHATTANOOGA IN SECOND STRAIGHT WIN

Tory Pearson took eight carries for 75 yards and three touchdowns as Cathedral won their second straight game with a 45-13 blowout over the visiting Chattanooga Mocs.

After posting a shutout the week before, the Spartans let up their season's first score as Chattanooga's senior quarterback Matt Davis rushed for his first of two touchdowns on a 29-yard keeper (followed by penalty-missed PAT). Cathedral, however, wouldn't look back as they scored 38 unanswered points before the half. Behind the arm of George Pasey Jr., the Spartans orchestrated a potent offense that forced Chattanooga to respect both the pass and run.

The game slowed down in the second half as the Spartans rested their starters in favor for younger players. Depth became a question, especially in the secondary, as Chattanooga's Matt Davis began to rack up yardage through the air leading to two consecutive red zone trips, the second culminating in a touchdown.

What It Means: Cathedral improves to 2-0, showing great poise early on in their transition year in the FBS. The Spartans pair up with Troy (2-0) as the only undefeated teams remaining in the Sun Belt Conference.

CATHEDRAL GETS ITS EXPECTED REALITY CHECK WITH LOSS AT WEST VIRGINIA

Cathedral received a reality check Saturday on the road in Morgantown as they faced off against the Big 12's West Virginia, losing in their first contest of the season, 48-9.

Cathedral got on the board first with a 24-yard field goal by sophomore placekicker Tanner Burnett, who would score all the Spartans' points, going 3-of-3 on the day. West Virginia struck back with 21 unanswered points, including two "Pick 6's", each thrown by George Pasey Jr., who would be sidelined for former starter Devron Fritz after throwing his third interception of the half.

The Mountaineers took a 27-6 lead heading into the half, and returned to add 21 more points to the deficit in the second half, topped with an 83-yard touchdown run from an underutilized Andrew Buie.

What It Means: Cathedral receives an accurate evaluation as they continue their year one journey in the FBS. With upcoming games against Florida State, Troy, and other primer Sun Belt competition, this is now the time to see out adjustments. The quarterback situation, according to head coach George Pasey, will be revisited following this game as both Pasey Jr. and Devron Fritz played, but struggled.

SPARTANS DEFEAT JACKSONVILLE STATE IN DEFENSIVE SHOWDOWN

They may be an FBS squad now, but for Cathedral, defeating No. 21 Jacksonville State stands as the young program's first ever win over a ranked opponent.

A failed two-point conversion left the needed points off the board for JSU following their first touchdown of the game, prevailing the Spartans to a 14-12 victory. Cathedral had contained the Gamecock's heavily reliant rushing attack for much of the game, holding standout running back to 125 yards on a workload of 32 carries. On offense, they played both quarterbacks George Pasey Jr. (who started) and Devron Fritz, neither of them ever finding rhythm.

With Pasey Jr. struggling through the air, Cathedral leaned on Fritz to open room on the ground with a spread option offense. The scheme worked, as the Spartans posted 170 yards rushing on 32 attempts.

What It Means: The quarterback conversation will roll on for Cathedral, much to the dismay of head coach George Pasey. The Spartans, however, pick up their third win of the season, all of which have come against FCS opponents. To be brutally honest, this could very well be their final win of the season.

RIAN WATKINS-REED NAMED CONFERENCE POTY

Rian Watkins-Reed, a nickleback from Conyers, Georgia, has been named the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against Jacksonville State during week six. Watkins-Reed recorded eight tackles, two for a loss, and intercepted a pass which would lead to running back Tory Pearson's seven-yard touchdown. Rian-Watkins joins teammate Michael Kane-Polson (week one) as the only two Spartans to be honored this season.

SPARTANS ADD ANOTHER QUARTERBACK

Among the Spartans early commitments is two-star quarterback Amir Thomas of Lithia Springs, Georgia. Thomas is rated the No. 29 dual-threat quarterback in the country, and is No. 87 overall. He selected Cathedral over Memphis, FAU, FIU, and East Carolina.

PASEY BENCHES SON IN FAVOR OF PREVIOUS STARTER, DEVRON FRITZ

Sophomore quarterback Devron Fritz will take the opening snap Saturday against Florida State, according to head coach George Pasey. The fifth-year head coach benches his son, Georgia Pasey Jr., in the process in what he calls "more of a strategic approach than anything". After debuting with a record-setting five passing touchdown performance against Samford, Pasey Jr. has thrown four interceptions to no touchdowns. While Fritz has also struggled to throw, he has provided a spark on the ground.

HIGH CHANCE OF RAIN IN TALLAHASSEE ON SATURDAY

Meteorologists are predicting a heavy chance of rain and possible thunderstorms Saturday in Tallahassee. Cathedral kicks off against the No. 15-ranked Florida State Seminoles at 3:30 PM EST. The game will be broadcasted on SEC Network; the Spartans second regionally televised game of the season.

CATHEDRAL TAKES BEATING AT FLORIDA STATE

Last week Cathedral played and defeated an FCS ranked squad. This week they turned tides and faced a ranked FBS squad, No. 15 Florida State, and got humiliated 51-7 at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee.

The game was delayed two minutes into the second quarter when thunderstorms hit the area. The Seminoles used the break to snap out of their slow start and expel 35 unanswered points against Cathedral following an opening quarter that saw them score just once.

Cathedral never found an answer, neither on offense or defense. Devron Firtz got his first start since Nov. 10, 2012 and though the sophomore quarterback threw for 259 yards, he topped it with four interceptions. On the ground, the Spartans leading rusher was Tory Pearson with just 23 yards on six carries. While the end result was expected by every Vegas line, the humility could be seen as the Spartans exited the sold-out stadium in Tallahassee.

What It Means: Cathedral drops to 0-2 against fellow FBS teams heading into conference play in the Sun Belt. The Spartans were outscored 99-16 in the two contests, both against Power-5 schools.

PASEY JR.: "I'VE WATCHED COUNTLESS HOURS OF FILM"

Senior quarterback George Pasey Jr. told local press on Wednesday he had watched "countless hours of film", including last Saturday's loss at Florida State where he attempted just a single pass in his season's first non-start. Pasey Jr., a former Louisiana Tech quarterback, was benched last week in favor of former starter Devron Fritz, who threw four interceptions against the Seminoles. Pasey Jr., eager to regain position, has thrown for 748 yards this season on 48-of-93 passing, including five touchdowns and five interceptions.

PEARSON SUFFERS SEASON/CAREER-ENDING INJURY DURING PRACTICE

Tory Pearson suffered a torn rotator cuff Tuesday during a full-contact practice and will miss the remainder of the season, effectively ending the fifth-year senior's career, according to coach George Pasey. Pearson, Cathedral's all-time leading rusher (1,455 yards), played four games this season, rushing for 360 yards and five touchdowns. Expected to step up is junior running back Myles Brady (22 att, 88 yds) and senior Davion Cobbs (10 att, 42 yds).

Note: Had no idea this injury occurred during the Florida State game.

CATHEDRAL LOSES 35-31 HEARTBREAKER TO TROY

George Pasey Jr. passed for 320 yards and three touchdowns in his return to the starting position only to fall short as Troy routed Cathedral in a 35-31 thriller Saturday at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The Spartans led the game until early in the fourth quarter when Troy's senior running back Khary Franklin scored on a one-yard touchdown to knot the game at 28 apiece following a successful two-pint conversion. Cathedral quickly fired back with a 36 yard reception to Michael Kane-Polson, putting them at their opponents' 39 yard line, eventually leading to a 24-yard field goal make by Tanner Burnett on fourth and two.

Troy opened their ensuing drive with trickery, causing Cathedral to jump offsides on the opening pair of plays. A followup 40 yard reception by Eric Thomas, his eighth catch, neared the Trojans to closer to their red zone, and five plays later quarterback Corey Robinson found the end zone with a two-yard keeper.

Robinson had a career high 476 yards passing and three touchdowns, his main receiver being Thomas who caught eight balls for 158 yards.

What It Means: Cathedral drops to .500 at 3-3 as the team continues its quest for its first intra-FBS win.

CATHEDRAL TUMBLES AGAINST WKU 28-10

Cathedral's proficient pass offense was countered with the country's best pass defense Saturday as the Spartans fell 28-10 at Western Kentucky.

Cathedral's George Pasey Jr. threw a career-high four interceptions in the loss, three coming in the second half which saw the Western Kentucky offense erupt for 21 unanswered points after trailing by a field goal. Senior wide receiver Ronnie Mixon caught a six-yard touchdown pass from Pasey Jr. to give Cathedral its first touchdown with 2:19 remaining in the third quarter.

WKU cornerback Arius Wright extended the Hiltoppers lead with a 55-yard "Pick-6" to seal all scoring.

What It Means: Cathedral drops to 0-2 in conference, and 3-4 overall.

TWO SPARTANS TO MISS HOMECOMING GAME

Defensive back Diante Dobzinski and running back Myles Brady will both miss Cathedral's upcoming homecoming game against Texas State, according to coach George Pasey. Dobzinski, Cathedral's lead cornerback, suffered a back strain against Western Kentucky while Myles Brady left the field with a concussion. Probable return dates for both players, according to Pasey, stand at 1-2 weeks.

TEAM HOLDS PLAYERS-ONLY MEETING TUESDAY

Sitting at 3-4 and coming off back-to-back losses, the Cathedral Spartans are pulling out all the stops to pick up its first intra-FBS win. On Tuesday, the team held a players-only meeting, tight end Howard Townsend III told local press Wednesday. "We held a meeting, just us as players, to really revisit some of the things we said over the summer, all the goals we had. A lot of guys spoke up and I think that says a lot. It was just an overall great time for us to all reset, get back to 0."

SPARTANS TO HOST SEVERAL RECRUITS ON HOMECOMING WEEKEND

Cathedral will welcome in a reported seven recruits this weekend in its culminating homecoming game against Texas State. Headlining the group will be Tyree Hawkins, an Atlanta native who will travel the short distance over to Cathedral. Hawkins ranks as Georgia's No. 4 defensive end and No. 33 in the country. The 6-foot-1, 263 pound prospect is touting offers from Cathedral, Memphis, NC State, South Alabama, and Wake Forest.

SPARTANS DEFEAT TEXAS STATE IN FIRST-EVER FBS WIN

Cathedral was tabbed favorites over a fellow FBS team for the first time of the season and did not disappoint, defeating Texas State 41-24 Saturday at the Georgia Dome in culmination of homecoming week.

The Spartans fired out strong, scoring on their first two offensive drives. Texas State regained ground in the second quarter with two touchdowns of their own along with a field goal to go into the half trailing 20-17. A key interception inside the end zone by Rian Watkins-Reed prevented the Bobcats from taking a lead.

After a half of shaky defense, Cathedral delivered a shutout third quarter topped with a 54-yard "Pick 6" by sophomore strong safety Steph Warren, the Spartans' first of the season. That along with a seven-yard touchdown by freshman Casey Leuck put the Spartans on top 34-17.

Texas State opened the fourth quarter with a 19-yard touchdown on a screen pass from Tyler Arndt to running back Tim Gay. Cathedral responded on the ensuing possession with the game's final score, a 15-yard touchdown on a jet sweep by senior receiver Michael Kane-Polson.

What It Means: Cathedral defeats its first ever FBS opponent while snapping a three-game losing streak to improve to 4-4 on the season, and 4-0 at home.

SPARTANS RETURN TO ATLANTA WITH VICTORY OVER UL MONROE

Senior quarterback George Pasey Jr. threw for 325 yards and two touchdowns as Cathedral defeated UL Monroe 34-17 Saturday at Malone Stadium.

The Spartans took a commanding 31-10 lead at halftime before pumping the breaks in the second half, posting only a field goal while ULM scored only their second touchdown. An efficient performance from Pasey Jr. allowed Cathedral to move the ball with ease, finishing the contest with 488 yards of offense - their second straight game with over 400.

Cathedral's co-defensive captain D.D. Franklin led a unit that limited the ULM Warhawks to just 285 yards of offense. Cornerback Amir Valentine added an interception against Kolton Browning, a top-tier quarterback of the Sun Belt Conference.

What It Means: Cathedral improves to a winning record at 5-4, while also picking up their first road win of the season.
