Punter's getting a lot of love this weekend, what with Marquette King in real life and we have Danny Allen up in here.. How the times have changed

Quite the sentimental match-up going into the Liberty bowl against Penn State.

This should be a very competitive game and should bring back some great memories for the program.

I'm calling for a Green Wave victory 24-17. I think your DBs make Penn State try to keep things on the ground.

I like Penn State's defense and I think you could have a tough time finding space against them. I am not overly wowed by their offense but they have enough pieces in place and a senior signal caller that I think it could be closer than first glance. I think think you win this one by double digits.

The trip down memory lane still brings out the feels. I remember reading that report like it was yesterday.

          Good luck my friend.

Haha...I know right. I've never had a punter play this consistently well. I know a lot of it is stick skills, but this guy just seems to have it and I am able to do things with this player that I haven't been able to with any other punter. It's almost as if it is programmed in for his kicks to bounce consistently well within the 20-yard line.

This Capital One Bowl game versus Penn St. definitely will have a little nostalgia about it. I still remember that national title game like it was yesterday. Hopefully this game is just as entertaining.

Thanks brother...it already has brought back some great memories. I always enjoy every opportunity I have to bring up old games, and that last second touchdown was arguably the single most significant moment of this 13 season dynasty.

I could live with that. Our DBs haven't had the greatest season, but I think we have what it takes to slow them down. Their big 6-7 receiver Brian Watts scares the crap out of me though!

Hopefully we can get an early lead and carry the momentum to victory

That's a very optimistic view of this game. We haven't crushed very many good teams as of late, so if that happens, I'll be very surprised. I still stand by my 2 1/2 point betting line in this one; I see a close, field goal game.

You already know how pumped I was when I saw we were going to be playing Penn St. As I have always stated, I am going to take advantage of every excuse to mention old games or bring up those old names from yester-year.

Thanks for checking in my friends and sorry for the delay...real life got a little busy the past couple of weeks. I plan to get this game in this weekend!

Game 13, Year 13 (2022 season): #8 Tulane vs. #13 Penn St. - Capital One Bowl

              #8X 21 -- 10-3
              #13 24 -- 11-2

With a chance to extend the game into overtime on the final play of regulation, Tulane sophomore PK Chris Coleman hooked this 50-yard field goal attempt that would have tied the game as time expired.

#8 Tulane unable to finish off late comeback rally, falls 24-21 to #13 Penn St. in Capital One Bowl | Following a crazy sequence of late events, PK Coleman misses 50-yard attempt as time expires to send Green Wave home bowl losers for the first time since 2017 | QB Allen benched after throwing 4 interceptions, senior Weaver nearly pulls off the miracle finish but falls just short | Team limps into the off-season with major question marks after failing to win either a conference championship or bowl game for the first time since 2014

Orlando, FL -- The last time Tulane and Penn St. met on the gridiron in the Sunshine State, six years ago, the stakes were much different. This time, the two teams were not playing for a national championship, though they provided another exciting finish like the one in Miami years ago. Unlike that faithful January evening in 2016 however, Tulane was unable to finish off a game-winning drive, falling to the Nittany Lions 24-21 Sunday at the Capital One Bowl in Orlando.

Penn St. RB Mario Kennedy's 1-yard first quarter touchdown run tied the game at 7-7. Kennedy finished the day with 103 rushing yards while adding 4 receptions for 30 yards.

In a game that featured a defensive touchdown, 8 combined turnovers between the two teams, a quarterback benching, an undesigned lateral for a touchdown, and an onside kick recovery, Tulane PK Chris Coleman hooked a 50-yard field goal to the left as time expired, sending the Green Wave away with its first bowl game loss since the 2017 season. The miss was Coleman's second of the day, as he also shanked a 39-yard attempt at the conclusion of a 14-play game-opening drive. He finishes the season 19 of 24 on field goals for the season, which matches his exact output from last season.

Following Coleman's miss on their first possession, Tulane would get on the board later in the opening quarter. Wave OLB Chuckie Coley jarred the ball loose from Penn St. RB Mario Kennedy and DE Jonathan Schultz recovered it before returning the ball 39 yards for a touchdown. The touchdown was his third of the season and gave the Wave a 7-0 lead.

Kennedy would make amends on the Nittany Lions' next drive however, tying the game up at 7-7 following a 1-yard touchdown run. Kennedy finished with a game-high 103 yards on 23 carries while also leading his team with 4 receptions for 30 yards.

The story of the game for Tulane was the poor play of sophomore signal caller Bryce Allen. Allen, who came into the game already having thrown 15 interceptions on the season, had about as dreadful of a game as a quarterback could have, finishing just 13 of 28 for 157 yards with no touchdowns and 4 interceptions. His second quarter interception thrown in the end zone to Penn St. FS Scott Bolden, one of two on the day for Bolden, would end up netting the Nittany Lions a 37-yard field goal by PK Nick Howard which gave them a 10-7 lead they'd never relinquish.

"They have the #9 rated defense in the country and they were #7 against the pass and it showed," said Tulane offensive coordinator Curtis Byrd.

"We just could not get guys open consistently and when we did, they were able to force bad throws due to their pressure packages or force check down passes which didn't go for much because they tackled so well."

Penn St. (11-2) would increase its lead early in the second quarter. Backup RB Jay Wade took a shotgun handoff and broke a tackle at the line of scrimmage before sprinting 45 yards for a touchdown that concluded a 6-play 79-yard opening second half drive and made the score 17-7. Wade finished the game with 79 rushing yards. The Green Wave would not lay down however.

After being backed up following a punt that was downed at the 5-yard line, the Green Wave got a big play from true freshman RB Deuce Monroe. Monroe, who runs a 4.32 40-yard dash, put his speed to great use, taking a handoff and bolting through the Penn State defense then spinning pass Bolden in the open field for a sensational 95-yard touchdown that made the score 17-14 in the third quarter. Monroe finished the game with 99 rushing yards on 7 carries, as both he and senior RB Buck Johnson III (9 carries for 20 yards) were otherwise bottled up by the Nittany Lions defense outside of the long play.

Sophomore QB Bryce Allen had what many would call the worst game of his career, tossing four interceptions on the day while also being sacked three times before being benched.
Penn St. would not allow the three-point point margin to stay intact for long though. A 9-yard touchdown pass from QB Clayton Brown to freshman TE David Buckley pushed the lead back up to ten, making the score 24-14 headed into the fourth quarter - and that's when things got crazy.

Allen, who had already thrown three interceptions, threw his fourth and final interception of the game, this one to OLB John Brown, turning the ball over with just over 8 minutes to go in the game. The play would end up not costing Tulane any points, as Howard missed a 53-yard field goal on the ensuing drive, however it did cost Allen (86 ovr), as he would get replaced by senior QB Sam Weaver (84 ovr) on the Wave's next offensive possession.

"We had to make the move. We aren't going to let Bryce stay in there after so many ineffective drives and throwing multiple turnovers," said Wave head coach D. Geezy.

"At that moment, we felt more than comfortable putting a senior out there in his final game to see if he could provide a spark."

Weaver would provide a spark, but his first drive ended just like several of Allen's - with a turnover. After driving the Wave deep into Penn St. territory, the former 3-star recruit from Texas saw his third down pass get bobbled by senior TE Steven Carpenter before being deflected into the awaiting hands of Penn St. star OLB Brett Bates, thwarting a key Green Wave scoring opportunity with under five minutes remaining.

The Tulane defense would need a big play to give their team a chance, and they delivered. After allowing the Nittany Lions to cross midfield following Weaver's turnover, sophomore SS Brandon Davidson's interception gave the Wave the ball back with 2:34 remaining.

Three plays following the pick, the Wave would score in unorthodox fashion. With the ball at the Nittany Lions 49-yard line, Weaver scrambled to the right and found WR Jason Mason deep and completed the pass 30 yards downfield. Sensing he was about to be tackled in open space, Mason decided to lateral the ball to a trailing Carpenter out of desperation, and the senior took it the rest of the way, bulldozing through defenders into the end zone for an emphatic touchdown, making the score 24-21 with just under two minutes to play. The unbelieveable play was Weaver's first career touchdown pass and also Carpenter's first touchdown this season after catching 6 last year.

After a deep pass reception, WR Jason Mason made a heads-up play to lateral the ball to TE Steven Carpenter, who took it in for a touchdown that made the score 24-21 with just under two minutes to play.

"No, we did not coach that," said Byrd, who referenced a similar impromptu lateral play he was a part of in 2014 as a senior quarterback of the Wave.

"I was terrified yet happy at the same time. That's not something we'd encourage our players to do, but Mase used good judgment and it worked out."

Following the amazing play, with Tulane down to only one timeout, they were forced to attempt an onside kick, and the move paid off. While attempting to field P/KOS Danny Allen's onside kick attempt, Penn St. freshman WR Brandon Powell collided with his teammate, TE Trevor McCarty, and the ball fell onto the grass. Green Wave true freshman CB Tyler Harrison pounced on the football, giving his team the ball back with 1:51 remaining.

Kickoff specialist Danny Allen's onside kick would get corralled by Wave true freshman CB Tyler Harrison with 1:51 to go in the game, giving their team one last shot to either to either win the game in regulation or send it into overtime.

On the ensuing possession, Weaver would take Tulane into Penn St. territory for the potential game-winning or game-tying points, however their drive would stall. A swing pass to Monroe on third and 24 would end up with the first year runner being tackled in the open field for a 2-yard loss at the 33-yard line with less than 30 seconds remaining. Geezy would choose to let the clock run down to 0:02, setting up Coleman for the potential game-tying 50-yard field goal to send it into overtime, but the kick would get taken by the wind and would not hit its mark.

"Chris had some issues with the wind in warm-ups and if you look at the replay, the initial trajectory was on point," said Geezy.

"The wind took it pretty violently back inward and we missed it. You feel bad for the player, and you especially feel bad for your seniors.

"In the end though, it should not have come down to the kick. We played poor football for 3 1/2 quarters, turning it over 5 times and outside of one run, we were pitiful in the ground game. Chris Coleman didn't blow this one, we blew it as a team."

Tulane finishes the 2022 season with a 10-3 record, their worst win percentage since 2014 (.769). Their season ends without either a conference championship or bowl win for the first time since that same 2014 season, when they finished in third place in their first season back in the Southeastern Conference before falling to Texas 42-34 in the AT&T Cotton Bowl.

Notes: Following Sunday's dreadful performance, QB Bryce Allen finishes the 2022 season with 19 touchdowns and 19 interceptions, a 1-to-1 TD in INT ratio, which is the worst by a starting quarterback during head coach D. Geezy's 13-season tenure with the Wave since 2011, when former Wave quarterback and current offensive coordinator Curtis Byrd threw 17 touchdowns and 22 interceptions in his true freshman campaign. The poor ratio represents a significant drop-off from Allen's true freshman season, when he threw for 33 touchdowns and only 17 interceptions. His 2,766 passing yards also represents a sharp drop off from his freshman season, when he threw for 4,077 yards; and once again, the previous low for a full-season starter was established during Byrd's freshman season, 2,763...Under Geezy, Tulane kickers have faced potential game-winning or game-tying pressure kicks on the final play of regulation six times during his 13 season tenure, going a perfect 6 of 6 before PK Chris Coleman's miss. Coleman's 50-yard attempt was the longest game-tying/game-winning kick tried during that span.

After playing in his final collegiate game, Tulane senior star CB Garrett Shuler walks off the field in disappointment as confetti rains from the sky.

Clad in his team's all-white uniforms, WR Derrick Lindsey (#83) was one of several Tulane seniors to run out of the tunnel for the final time.

Tulane sophomore WR Jason Mason took in the Sunshine State atmosphere in the pregame and ended up with a solid performance, finishing the contest with 5 receptions for 86 yards.

Tulane DE Jonathan Schultz's 39-yard fumble return touchdown gave his team an early 7-0 lead. It was his third touchdown of the season, all coming on fumble returns.

FS Scott Bolden and the Penn St. defense frustrated QB Bryce Allen all game long. Bolden finished with two of the Nittany Lions' four interceptions.

Penn St. QB Clayton Brown had a somewhat spotty performance, however he did finish with 223 passing yards along with what ended up being the game-deciding touchdown pass.

True freshman RB Deuce Monroe's dazzling 95-yard third quarter touchdown run briefly cut Tulane's deficit to three points.

Senior CB Garrett Shuler and the Tulane defense did all they could to limit Penn St.'s scoring opportunities despite seeing their offensive counterparts turn the ball over 5 times. Garrett's second half sack was one of three on the day for the Wave defense.

Penn St. OLB Brett Bates had a superb performance, finishing with 5 tackles, 1 sack, and this key interception late in the game.

QB Sam Weaver saw his first extended game action in relief of struggling QB Bryce Allen and nearly pulled off the miracle comeback. The redshirt senior finished with 147 passing yards in less than a quarter of action, along with this touchdown via a lateral with under two minutes remaining.

Penn St. players celebrate following Tulane PK Chris Coleman's missed 50-yard field goal as the game clock expired.

2022 NCAA FOOTBALL BOWL GAME REVIEW

QB Curtis Fowler (90 ovr) replaced redshirt junior and 2021 Heisman winner David Fontenot (93 ovr) in week 2 after Fontenot suffered a foot fracture.

USC STYMIES WEST VIRGINIA 31-18, WINS FIRST NATIONAL TITLE SINCE 2017

Redshirt junior QB Curtis Fowler throws for 396 yards and 2 touchdowns, rushes for another as Trojans win comfortably | Mountaineers unable to get Heisman winning RB Kevin Estes going as he finishes with just 74 yards on 19 carries and no catches | RB McBride's 6-yard touchdown run with 1:02 remaining lifts #17 Florida past #7 TCU 26-25 in Sugar Bowl | #3 Boise St., #4 Nevada both blown away in their BCS appearances, leaving USC as nation's only undefeated team in 2022

Tough way to end the season. The Wave will be back though. Too much talent to not be.

Wow that is a heart breaking loss. The step backwards by Allen is scary and should create some controversy going into spring ball next year. I know I've been on Mason since his arrival but it looked like he came to play in this one. That lateral would have been the final straw for me if he messed that up lol.

Wow, tough loss to take, given how much Tulane shot themselves in the foot in this game. I know you've mentioned your lack of CB depth after this year and when you couple that with poor play from Allen (creating a competition this spring at QB?) and the fact that you didn't finish in the top 10 (which hurts the promise you made to a bunch of recruits), it'll make for a very interesting off-season. Very curious to see the recruiting updates in the offseaon.

Wow not the result I was expecting at all and a heartbreaking end to the season. Allen getting completely overwhelmed and becoming a turnover machine has to be the storyline of this game. Would you say it was due to too much pressure in his face or for the most part was he just making bad throws? I still think he remains the guy moving forward, unless some hot freshman comes in to challenge him. Either way a lot of questions heading into the offseason as Geezy and the team limp into it.

I really love the added depth to the Bowl Game wrap up at the end of the seasons with the picture and such. It really adds to the immersion.

I really like the stat line for Deuce. I am hoping to see him continue to be used as a big part of the pass game both as a receiver and a runner.

Looking forward to seeing how the team responds during the offseason. Hang in there my friend!

Tough tough loss to take bro. You must be disappointed with how that season went, but I have faith that you and your Green Wave will bounce back and turn things back around. Can't wait to see what happens in the offseason!
