    Perseverance : Tommy Jacobs' Career

With my capture card coming in the mail shortly, I've decided it was time for me to start writing on a new report. Real life and other personal issues got the best of my previous coaching dynasty, but with the new hardware I thought, why not start anew.

As I own both NCAA '14 and Madden 25 for the PS3, this project will have the following objective : to bring the character of Tommy Jacobs, a fictional quarterback from the state of Minnesota, all the way through his college and hopefully NFL career. I will split that into separate "acts" as such :

    - High school senior year (played via NCAA's RTG mode) ;
    - College career, in which I will create Jacobs and assign him to the school he'll have chosen in RTG, and play as him in NCAA's Dynasty mode ;
    - Pro career, I will simulate the seasons in Madden 25 until Jacobs gets drafted (or not), then play as him with the club he'll be playing for.

As I get limited playing time though, don't expect this story to go on quickly. One thing that I think went wrong on my earlier dynasty was that I was playing too many games too quickly, and ended up running short on stories. I was making up things on the go, but it would sometimes take many in-game weeks for a story to unfold, and I think it detracted from the overall feel. I intend to take more time between actual game updates this time, so things will be able to happen in between.

I want to first say thanks to guys like Deegeezy, Tearz49ers, Cheese2121 and djp73, among MANY others, whose work inspire others as myself to write these things. There will likely be ideas in the story that you might recognize from others, I've done quite a bit of a read before posting this, and noted many ideas that I would like to implement, so I hope people will not get too offended by me using some of their ideas. I'll look into making them work as personal as possible to Jacobs' character.

I intend to write about the games mainly, with some interviews here and there to go a bit inside Tommy's character. Tommy's own thoughts and realizations should primarily be through his (fictional) Twitter account, but feel free to ask anything about him, as I do have some bits of background info that help me drive his character. As for the moment, I don't plan on doing any narrative as Tommy himself, other than his occasional tweets. It is not set in stone however, and I may include that at a later time.

    Cheers !

Disclaimer : The contents of this write-up is purely fictional, and any resemblance to actual events is pure coincidence. All graphics and material used in this write-up are used for entertainment purposes only.

    High School - RTG
    - Play senior year in RTG Mode
    - Heisman settings
    - 5-minute quarters
    - Sliders : BlackRain37's Definitive Coach Mode Sliders
    - No gameplay restrictions (other than how RTG plays)
    - Scholarship offers will define the schools available to start college career

    College - Dynasty Mode
    - Play college career in Dynasty Mode
    - Heisman settings
    - 9-minute quarters
    - Sliders : Matt10's Community Sliders
    - As long as Tommy is playing in the NCAA, I'll play Dynasty mode as OC (since Tommy's a QB)
    - "Ask Coach" playcalling : I can only choose from one of the 3 plays that initially appear on the playcall screen (simulating the coordinator calling plays to Tommy), and I must always select a "Setup!" play when it appears as one of the three choices
    - No restrictions on audible/hot routes/hurry-up calling (I'm not abusing the system though)
    - Simulate the game on defense, and on offensive plays/games where Tommy doesn't play (for whatever reason)
    - I'm not touching the recruiting process, leaving that to the CPU, UNLESS the CPU targets a recruit from Minnesota, then I'm allowed to boost the points to the maximum possible (to simulate how a player might help recruiting, and since Minnesota is Tommy's home state)

    Misc college rules
    - As the seasons play on, I'll realign the conferences as per Brendan's Conference Realignment Guide, up to the matching real-life season.
    - I'm planning on implementing the College Football Playoffs as it has been in real-life, so for the end of the 2014-15 NCAA season.
    - I will be using the game's BCS rankings as a substitute for the CFP rankings, to some extent. If there is consensus that a team should be in or out of the playoffs instead of another one, rankings will be altered consequently. Reader interactions may play a part in this process.
    - Since the game doesn't allow a conference with less than 12 teams to play a conference championship, I'm planning to add two (or more) teams to the Big XII for the 2017 season, when a championship game returns to the Big XII. The teams added to the conference will be decided according to performance and geographical criteria.

Blaine Bengals ready for the new season

Our Bengals are ready to take on their opponents for this season ! The team this year includes some new faces, mostly on defense, and are led by last season's standout quarterback Tommy Jacobs, who took over from Duke Anyanwu last year when the senior got injured in the second-to-last game of the regular season. He impressed enough to be given the starting position this year, so we can hopefully expect great things from him this season !

Here's the Bengals schedule for this year :

                - Sept. 7, vs Totino-Grace High School
                - Sept. 14, vs Minnetonka High School
                - Sept. 21, @ East Ridge High School
                - Sept. 28, @ Eden Prairie High School
                - Oct. 5, vs Maple Grove High School
                - Oct. 12, @ Rosemount High School
                - Oct. 19, vs Mounds View High School
                - Oct. 26, @ Lakeville North High School

See you next Friday for the opening game against the Totino-Grace Eagles !

Hopefully he does, but that would also make for an interesting storyline if he ends up having a less-than-brillant high school year and goes on to have a big college career after that, just to shun his detractors ! Only time will tell I guess.

Home opener win for our Bengals !

The Bengals were victorious yesterday against Totino-Grace High School, with a score of 45-10 in front of a big crowd of 853 for the home opener. Our starting quarterback Tommy Jacobs had a record game, going 28-for-41 with 503 yards and 6 touchdowns, but threw two interceptions and was sacked once. The defensive unit had a great game too, stopping the Eagles on many occasions and allowing only 10 points to the visitors.

See you next week for another home game, this time against the Minnetonka Skippers !

Re: Perseverance : Tommy Jacobs' Career

We caught up with last night's player of the game, Bengals' quarterback Tommy Jacobs, and had an interesting talk with him about this season and what may lie in the future for him.

Blueprint : First of all, congratulations on the win tonight ! Any impressions about the game ?

Tommy Jacobs : It was a great game, nice home opener for the fans in attendance, it was good to see all these people there ! We actually struggled a bit early on, must be because it's our first game of the year, but we were quick to get back to our old habits. We relaxed later when the game was pretty much over, but it was then that I threw those two interceptions, so it was some kind of reminder that as long as the game's not over, you have to stay focused. Fortunately it didn't do much harm, and our defense was there to stop them so we weren't too worried.

BP : You now hold the single game passing yards record for a Bengal quarterback, what are your thoughts on that ?

TJ : Honestly, I'm learning that from you right now ! I frankly wasn't going for any record, I was simply playing, and it seemed that pretty much everything went right today, we just had one of those games where everything goes your way. I'm proud to have that record, but it wasn't just me, as long as I have time to pass, and someone to pass to, anything is possible.

BP : How do you see the schedule this year for the Bengals ?

TJ : Well, obviously with the jump from 5A to 6A, competition should be harder, as every team will look to get as much exposure as possible to promote their players, but at the same time, pretty much every other team we'll play, we did play last year, so most of the players we already know about, so there won't be too many surprises there. Coach Develice has told me I'd start pretty much every match for the season, so the burden of playing well will fall on me, but I'm looking forward to the challenge. I believe we can do well this year, and we'll try to right the wrongs we had last year to push it all the way to the championships.

BP : With this being your final year, have you had any contact with recruiters at the next level ?

TJ : Well, I've had a couple conversations with some colleges not too far from here, but right now the most talks I had are with Illinois State and North Dakota State, as well as Minnesota in D1, with my father being a professor there, it probably helped me a bit. I'm in no way committed to anywhere right now anyway, haven't received any offers from anyone, so I'm focused on my own play at the moment, and if there's something to come, I'm sure it'll come sooner or later.

BP : What would you say are your strongest and weakest points ?

TJ : I'd say that my strong points are my arm and my patience in the pocket. I think I'm calm enough to wait for a receiver to get open before throwing, so I don't end up having to throw a lobbed ball simply to give a receiver time to get to it. This in turn makes me throw passes that are solid, limiting the chances to get intercepted (or so I think). An area in which I'll have to work is my mobility in and out of the pocket. I usually can wait out for a receiver, but when I don't have a choice but to run with the ball, my options are a little limited. That's something I'll have to work on to increase my chances at playing at the next level.

Bengals not scared of Skippers, win 31-7

Another week, another home game, another win for our Bengals ! Starting quarterback Tommy Jacobs had another great game yesterday with 390 yards on 41 passing attempts, of which 25 were completed, adding 3 touchdowns to his season tally. One of these touchdowns was caught in spectacular fashion by wide receiver Geo Sarria, as can be seen in the above photograph. The Bengals hit the road for two games, starting next week against the East Ridge Raptors, who currently are 0-2 in the standings. They'll be facing Eden Prairie the week after. Go Bengals !

Bengals come out with 34-27 win in tough game

The Bengals held on to win by a touchdown yesterday against the East Ridge Raptors, despite a tough game for senior quarterback Tommy Jacobs, who accounted for 3 of the 4 turnovers that we committed. He still had a good outing statistically, amassing 391 yards through the air and two touchdowns. Our defense was weaker than they were in the previous games, allowing 27 points (they had only allowed 17 in two games before that). The team will play on the road again next week, as they'll be visiting Eden Prairie.
