Game 2, Year 14 Preview (2023 season): #12 Tulane at #17 Notre Dame

    GAME 2 PREVIEW

Latest Line (courtesy Bovada - Las Vegas):

    ....................3 1/2....................

2019: Tulane junior TE Roger Battle beats overwhelmed Irish freshman FS Greg Johnson to the seam, catching a wide open pass and racing 77 yards for an early third quarter touchdown that helped extend the Wave's lead to 23-14. Johnson was a frequent target of head coach D. Geezy's offensive play-calling all game long.

Last Meeting: Former Tulane QB Preston Fields, a redshirt senior at the time playing in place of injured starting QB Jimmy Williams, went 21 of 40 for for 347 yards and 4 touchdown passes along with no interceptions, as the Green Wave rolled to a 40-21 victory over Notre Dame in 2019 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Fields' favorite target of the day was former Green Wave TE Roger Battle, who hauled in 8 receptions for 164 yards and 4 touchdowns, all career-highs. Former Wave superstar WR Ryan Jean also had a fine performance, hauling in 6 receptions for 110 yards as then-#1 ranked Tulane improved to 5-0 on the season.

2018: Former Tulane star QB Jamie Manning hit former WR Herbie Smith in the end zone for a 35-yard touchdown which increased the Green Wave's lead to 27-10 in the third quarter.

Last Meeting at Venue: Former then-sophomore RB Bernie Davis, making his first career start in place of injured senior RB Brett Curtis, carried the ball 14 times for 89 yards and 2 touchdowns, pacing the Green Wave to a 41-17 blowout victory in 2018 at South Bend. Tulane scored a whopping 21 points in a span of 0:47 in the third quarter to quickly pull away from the home-standing Irish and improve to 6-0 on the season, a year in which the team ended with a perfect 14-0 record and the second of two BCS National Championship Game victories under head coach D. Geezy. Former Green Wave star QB Jamie Manning had a somewhat pedestrian day by his standards, as he finished with just 178 passing yards and one touchdown. The win marked the first time in nine tries in school history that the Wave was able to defeat the Irish.

    2022 Season Recaps:

: After going into the season ranked #4 in the Preseason Coaches Poll, Tulane finished the 2022 season with a 10-3 record and ranked #16 in the final Coaches Poll after being upset by Penn St. 24-21 in the Capital One Bowl. Their 6-2 final record in SEC play was their worst since 2014, as they failed to qualify for the SEC Championship Game for the first time since that same 2014 season. With the game scheduled this year to be played at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, the Green Wave hopes to return to the BCS title game for the first time in five seasons. The team returns only 5 starters on offense and 6 on defense from last season.

: After going into the season ranked #5 in the Preseason Coaches Poll Notre Dame finished the 2022 season with a 9-3 record and ranked #17 in the final Coaches Poll after deafting unranked Ohio 26-21 in the GMAC Bowl. The Fighting Irish hopes to return to national prominence after hauling in the #1 rated recruiting class in the nation this past February, including the nation's #1 rated running back, Eric Banks (82 ovr) and the nation's #1 rated wide receiver, Anthony Robertson (81 ovr). The team returns only 4 starters on offense and 4 on defense from last season.

Re: Coach Geezy in the Big Easy: Our City, Our Team | Part II - The Golden Age of Tul

Notre Dame looks very very good on paper and I can see Kirk and Lee have quickly jumped ship. The Irish have hands down the best group of freshman players I have ever seen. Thinking how good they will be over the coming seasons is terrifying.

I think going into this one, you have to focus on the obvious; controlling the trenches and establishing the ground game. The less of the game you have to put in Allen's hands the better off things will be I think at this time. They don't have as much speed on the ends as Boise did so hopefully your tackles will fail a little bit better.

I am not overly concerned about your defense, although keeping their speed in front of you will be key. Your unit should be alright.

Looking forward to this one! Good luck!

That is the best freshman class I've ever seen in the NCAA series. And I include all of my own classes I've recruited in that, too. Good lord.

Just got smacked right out of the gate but it's still early and you have enough time to turn it around and it was out of conference.

Give Notre Dame two years, they're going to be scary!

Not a good start coming out of the gate losing to Boise like that... at the Superdome. I'm not sure Allen is the answer going forward if he has a repeat performance against ND. Turnovers are crucial, and to commit a lot of them is a no go.

Rashaad Hicks-Walker looked pretty good in the game; I'm curious to see how his 5th year goes. Not often do I see an 82 speed guy break off a 75+ yard TD.

Good luck against ND! Their freshman class is definitely one of the greatest I've ever seen.

They don't look to be very talented but they have plenty of speed so keeping the ball away from their offense will be critical. You'll need to keep their running backs bottled up or they could break off some big runs. I believe in your defense though. I'm predicting a solid win on this one. good luck!

This is gone be a very interesting game. Hopefully the Wave can bounce back nicely. That number 1 recruiting class that Notre Dame brought in is talented but remember young players can be shook up easily. If you can get their young players on the O-line to make some mistakes then I think you can contain the big play opportunities. I don't see many holes on their Defense but if you can get some short pass completions in front of their CBs and hit the backs out of the backfield you should be good to go. That is to say that Allen can not have another bad outing. South Bend crowd will make it hard for him but I believe in the young man.

Yeah man, ain't gonna lie on this one - I am a tad bit intimidated by this team. Are they spectacular on paper? No. But they have a ton of young talent whose overall ratings are probably only being held down by the low awareness ratings freshmen get.

That class of theirs is amazing, and we will get to face them each of the next three seasons. There are studs from that class that aren't even in their lineup yet. In many ways, it reminds me of my old 2016 recruiting class - that one set us up for a nice 3 to 4 year run of dominance that netted us two national titles during that span.

I think this game will come down to us establishing the ground game early. Tim Powers and Tony Tompkins need to come with their chinstraps buckeled. That will be the best defense versus the Irish's spread attack and it will also help us limit mistakes and help limit the exposure of what looks to be a somewhat porous offensive line of ours. If we're forced to become one-dimensional again like last week, we could be in some trouble.

Yep...this class for Notre Dame has them set up to quickly become a dynasty within the next couple of years. We "signed a three year contract" with them last season so we will be seeing plenty from these guys over the next few years. RB Eric Banks and WR Anthony Robertson both look amazing as do the guys on defense. They will definitely be a factor in the national title picture soon.

It is very early, but we are already in a must-win situation. Seriously, this game here may very well define what type of team we're going to be this year. An 0-2 hole, in this Tulane fantasy universe, will be ground we haven't seen in quite some time and a loss will all but eliminate us from national title contention just two weeks in. This is a must-win against a tough team in a tough environment.

Thanks David...you may be right. Allen is one more game like that away from very possibly being pulled permanently, not because I necessarily think the next guy can do better, but because it would be time to mail it in and start looking to the future. I have a nice 4-star freshman I am redshirting right now who I may throw in there if things go too far south.

Hicks-Walker is one of my favorite players to date. He was a 3-star JUCO transfer who we redshirted and now he's looking like he can be a key contributor as a 5th year senior. He doesn't drop ANYTHING; he's really a rock-solid possession receiver.

I'm actually going to disagree a tad about their talent level. I think they look very good on paper. Most of their young guys have the skill sets of 90+ overall players and the only thing holding them down is awareness.

I think offensively, containing RB Eric Banks and WR Anthony Robertson will be key.

We need to get some turnovers in this one and of course, do a whole lot better than last week's 8 turnovers that we committed.

I hope you're right about Allen...my confidence in him is slowly fading. We need to get back to the error-free football from him he displayed as a true freshman. I don't understand what has happened to him - a lot of his mistakes aren't of the user-error variety; he's missing wide open targets at times and throwing it right to defenders. Something just feels "off" with him now.

I think the #1 key for us today is the running game. If we can run the ball well and control the clock, we will have a great shot at winning this thing. Like with any game, holding onto the football will be important and we also need to protect the QB well so that we can avoid getting behind the sticks and in third and long situations.

This game is about as must-win as a week two game and we have to get it done in one of the toughest venues there is in this game and as a legit underdog for the first time in I don't know how long...Can't wait!

Thanks all for the fantastic pregame talk as always...it's time to kick this one off and it looks like there is HEAVY rain in the forecast at South Bend!

This game should be fun. Also Notre Dame has the best recruiting class I've ever seen. I think Tulane wins 34-24 with a late touchdown to seal the deal.

You got the "fun" part right, but unfortunately the late TD part was wrong, as you'll see in a moment. LOL

Yeah, I wish I could post everything but you gotta walk that fine line between "real life" elements and "video game" elements and I don't want to bog this report down too much with ratings talk.

I've always said though that anytime you have freshmen rated in the high 70's/low 80's, they may as well be rated in the 90's. For the most part, all that's holding them back are their awareness ratings, which has little to no effect on non-simulated games.

Game 2, Year 14 (2023 season): #12 Tulane Green Wave at #17 Notre Dame Fighting Irish

                          #12 25 -- 0-2
                          #17 30 -- 1-1

QB Bryce Allen stands helplessly in the rain after his throw at the goal line on the final play of the game fell incomplete, capping off a second consecutive miserable performance by the junior signal-caller and sending Tulane off to 0-2 to start the season.

For the first time since the 2010 season, Tulane must figure out how navigate themselves out of an 0-2 hole following a heartbreaking 30-25 loss at rain-soaked Notre Dame | QB Allen's pass attempt to WR Hicks-Walker at the goal line gets batted away as time expires, foiling Green Wave's second half rally | Sophomore RB Tony Tompkins comes up with big performance in loss; QB Allen's second straight poor performance leaves Geezy noncommittal about the struggling junior's status next week | Geezy describes next week's bout with #10 Miami at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome as "potentially season-defining"

South Bend, IN -- Both #12 Tulane and #17 Notre Dame came into Saturday afternoon's contest already in "must-win" mode having each lost their 2023 season openers last week. In the end though, the Green Wave's inability to protect the quarterback and their sudden penchant for turning the ball over bit them in the rear again as the Fighting Irish held on for a 30-25 victory in a torrential downpour at South Bend. Junior FS Curtis Butler finished the game with 14 tackles and 2 interceptions, and a big goal line stop by the Irish defense on the game's final play of the game helped send the Wave off to their first 0-2 start since the 2010 season, which was head coach D. Geezy's first year in New Orleans.

Notre Dame star FS Curtis Butler was a disruptive force in the Fighting Irish secondary all day long, racking up 14 tackles along with 2 interceptions.

The troubling turnover trend for Tulane this season continued on Saturday, as the Wave offense turned the ball over four times. Starting QB Bryce Allen's 3 interceptions, all thrown in the first half, gave him 7 interceptions just two games into the season. The junior signal-caller was also sacked 6 times, one week after being taken down 7 times during last week's season-opening 44-17 loss at home to Boise St.

Allen's struggles began early on Saturday. After the Green Wave started the game by going on an impressive 10-play opening drive which penetrated into the red zone, the former blue chip recruit's pass attempt to the flat to senior WR Rashaad Hicks-Walker was picked off by Irish CB Steven Sanders at the 8-yard line, foiling a potential early momentum-seizing opportunity for the Wave.

Fortunately for Tulane, its defense would hold firm and not allow the Irish to capatalize off the turnover, however disaster would strike once again, and this time Notre Dame took advantage.

On Notre Dame's ensuing punt, Green Wave RB Tony Tompkins, an All-American return man last season as a true freshman, would get stripped of the football, and Fighting Irish DB Nick Burns recovered, giving his team the ball deep in Wave territory. Two plays later, Notre Dame RB Justin Massey would run in untouched for a 26-yard touchdown which gave the Irish an early 7-0 lead.

"We came into this game with a strong emphasis on not turning the ball over, especially with the rainy conditions, and we turned it over twice on our first two opportunities to possess the football, and that is just inexcusable" said Geezy, who indicated after the game that Allen's position as the team's starting quarterback will be re-evaluated this week in practice.

"We have literally turned the ball over 12 times in two games and I am really at a loss of words."

Saturday afternoon was sophomore RB Tony Tompkins much-awaited coming out party, as he finished with a career-high 182 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns in the losing effort
It didn't take long for Tompkins to make amends for his fumble, an issue that plagued him last season and landed him in Geezy's doghouse during his freshman season. On the Green Wave's very first offensive play from scrimmage following Massey's score, the heralded 4-star signing from a year ago took a handoff from Allen and was able to bounce it outside before turning on the jets and showing off his reported 4.30 speed, racing 90 yards for a touchdown that tied the game up at 7-7. The score was Tompkins' longest of his still-young career and he finished with 131 rushing yards, in the first quarter.

Unfortunately, that would be Tulane's only touchdown of the first half and the celebration of it was short-lived. Notre Dame would take its ensuing possession and march 80 yards over 9 plays and QB George Hardin's 1-yard touchdown plunge on third and goal allowed the Irish to re-claim a 14-7 lead.

The two teams traded field goals in the second quarter, including a Notre Dame field goal which was set up by an interception by Butler deep in Wave territory which gave the Irish a 17-10 lead going into halftime.

Notre Dame was set to get the football first to open the second half, however RB/KR Eric Banks was stripped of the football by Wave special teamer LB Thomais Bonner and it was recovered by true freshman FS Terrell Faulk deep in Irish territory. The turnover led to a 46-yard field goal by freshman PK Aaron Larson, cutting the Green Wave deficit to 17-13 and giving them some semblance of momentum, however it would be short-lived.

The Fighting Irish make up for their earlier mistake by going on 10-play, 79-yard drive which lasted 2:24. The long drive would culminate with one of the wackiest plays in recent college football history.

After converting a 4th and 1 play to the Tulane 3-yard line on their previous play, Notre Dame would call a toss play. However, Hardin's toss to the right would slip out of his hands and sail well over the head of Banks before falling harmlessly to the turf all the way near the sideline. The free ball would take a couple of odd bounces before ending up in the end zone and that's where freshman WR Anthony Robertson was able to corral it for a fumble recovery touchdown that increased his team's lead to 24-13.

On what was one of the most bizarre plays seen in years, Notre Dame sophomore QB George Hardin turned to pitch the ball to true freshman RB Eric Banks, but the first year player blew his assignment and the ball fell to the turf. After an odd bounce into the end zone, true freshman WR Anthony Robertson picked it up for an unorthodox touchdown that extended the Irish's third quarter lead to 24-13.

"Call it the god **** 'luck of the Irish' or whatever you want to say, but that play seemed about right with the type of season we are having" said Wave defensive coordinator Steve Ellis.

Tulane refused to let the play discourage them and would start its comeback rally on their very next drive. The team went on 14-play 80-yard drive which lasted 4:52 and featured two big third down receptions by Hicks-Walker along with a 4th and 12 catch by junior WR Brandon McIntyre that got the ball inside the Irish 20-yard line. Tompkins's 13-yard touchdown run just two plays after McIntyre's conversion was his second score of the day at cut the Green Wave deficit to 24-20 late in the third quarter. The Florida native finished the game with 16 carries for 182 yards and 2 touchdowns, all career-highs while McIntyre and Hicks-Walker each topped 100 yards receiving for a second straight week.

Moments, more fortune came to the Wave. Following Tulane sophomore Terry Alexander's punt that was downed at the 5-yard line, it would be the defense that came up with a big play. With Notre Dame pinned deep in its own territory, Ellis called a free safety blitz and it paid dividends as junior FS LeCharles Smith Jr. was in perfect position to take down Hardin in the end zone on an attempted option play before he could pitch it to Banks, resulting in a safety that cut the Green Wave deficit to 24-22 with 6:51 remaining.

Tulane would finally take its first lead of the 2023 season on their next possession following the ensuing free kick by going on an 8-play drive which ended with a 36-yard field goal by Larson, putting them up 25-24 with 4:11 to go.

True freshman WR Anthony Robertson hauled in 10 receptions for 149 yards on the afternoon, none bigger than this 27-yard third down reception with under a minute remaining which set up the Fighting Irish's 8-yard game-winning touchdown just two plays later.
Notre Dame (1-1) did not go away easy, driving the ball into Green Wave territory on their next drive. However, on 3rd and 15 from the Wave 32-yard line, Hardin's pass attempt into the end zone to Robertson was picked off by Wave MLB Sean Williams with 2:27 to go, putting his team in position to possibly run out the clock. Unfortunately Tulane was unable to convert any first downs and was forced to punt the ball back to Notre Dame with 1:57 remaining.

The Irish got the football back at its own 39-yard line and went on a 10-play 61-yard drive. The drive featured two big third down conversions by Robertson. The nation's top high school receiver prospect finished with 10 receptions for 149 yards, and his 27-yard third down reception with less than a minute to go set his team up inside the Green Wave 10-yard line. Two plays later, his recruiting classmate Banks would score on an 8-yard run, giving their team the lead back at 30-25 with just 0:46 to go.

"They have a special pair there and they came up with big plays when they needed them the most," said Geezy of Banks and Robertson.

Tulane was able to get one last crack at it on the game's final drive. Allen's 31-yard run, the second longest run of his career, pushed Tulane into Irish territory at the 46-yard line with under just over 30 seconds remaining. He'd then hit Hicks-Walker and McIntyre with chunk passes that got the ball all the way down to the Notre Dame 4-yard line with just 0:05 remaining, giving them two shots at the end zone.

Allen's first pass attempt was to McIntyre on a quick slant route which was batted down by Sanders, leaving just 0:02 remaining on the clock. On the game's final play, Allen rolled out to the left and hoped to hit McIntyre in the back of the end zone on a crossing pattern but he was well-covered. He'd then go to his second read, Hicks-Walker, in the left-flat, however Notre Dame CB Josh Reid got a good break on the ball and was able to break up the pass as time expired, sending the Irish sideline and sellout crowd pouring onto the field in euphoria to cap off their thrilling victory and sending the Green Wave home losers.

"We are getting a harsh lesson this season in 'Football 101' and that lesson is that you cannot turn the football over at the rate we have or allow the number of sacks that we have and expect to win," said Geezy, whose team will face Notre Dame again next season at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

"That said, I am very proud of the way we played in the second half; we didn't turn the ball over and we fought through the adversity as well as the elements and almost came away with a big win. In the end though, 'almost' isn't good enough."

The road to redemption for Tulane (0-2) will start next Saturday night when they face #10 Miami at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. The then-#2 ranked Green Wave defeated the then-#10 ranked Hurricanes in thrilling fashion last season 35-31 at Hard Rock Stadium.

Notre Dame junior CB Josh Reid, a player Tulane recruited heavily two years ago as JUCO star, broke up this pass attempt to WR Rashaad Hicks-Walker at the goal line as time expired to preserve the win for the Irish.

Fighting Irish starting WR Chad Harris views one of the many signs decorating the famous narrow halls of Notre Dame Stadium's tunnel as he makes his way to the field.

True freshman WR Anthony Robertson taps Notre Dame's famous "Play Like A Champion" sign before the game, and that's just what he did.

Tulane RB Tony Tompkins had by far the best game of his career thus far, rushing for 182 yards and 2 touchdowns. He capped off his career-long 90-yard touchdown with an emphatic dive into the end zone, tying the game at 7-7 midway through the first quarter.

Tulane DT Kenny Chase (#91) and DB Jonathan Smith (#4) were both frustrated following Hardin's 1-yard touchdown run that gave Notre Dame a 14-7 advantage.

Green Wave senior WR Rashaad Hicks-Walker broke the 100-yard mark for the second straight game, coming up with several big drive-extending catches throughout the contest while finishing with 6 receptions for 108 yards.

Tulane center Jeremy Andrews had a hard time blocking Notre Dame DT Will Jones all afternoon as the junior finished with 4 tackles for loss and 2 sacks.

Green Wave sophomore MLB Sean Williams' interception in the end zone with just under three minutes remaining gave his team the ball back with a 25-24 lead and a chance to melt away the clock, but the Wave offense was unable to get any first downs and was forced to punt it back to Notre Dame with 1:57 to go.

Tulane junior starting CB Brian Malone, a JUCO transfer this past off-season, was absolutely torched by true freshman WR Anthony Robertson all game long. The #1 high school receiver prospect from last year finished with 10 receptions for 149 yards and hauled in two big receptions on the Irish's game-winning drive.

True freshman RB Eric Banks was in and out of the lineup with an abdominal injury, however last season's #1 high school running back prospect was able to muster up enough strength to provide the game-winning 8-yard touchdown run with just 0:46 remaining.

Sucks to start out 0-2, especially with an ending like that. Your matchup with Miami next week is definitely "season-defining." Hopefully you can get back on the right track.

There were positives to take away from this game when comparing it to Boise State; but the two main problems are still rearing their ugly head: the turnovers and you are losing the battle in the trenches. The turnovers speak for themselves. Some of them I lay on Allen some of them I lay on the offensive line. If you weren't having the offensive line troubles I would be more inclined to advocate for a quarterback change but I worry about putting a true freshman behind that and question if he could survive much better than Allen. On the other hand, you are nearing a point where you almost have to make a change.

While we have been focused mainly on the offensive struggles, I am hoping to see a bit more of a pass rush out of your front seven. I felt like your already weak secondary got hung out to dry a bit in this one and that led to your corners getting a little roasted.

I was very happy to see Tompkins slowly grow into the player we had all envisioned when he signed originally (my heart is still trying not to cry too much for the departed Deuce).

This next game, well next two are not going to be easy but are easily going to start defining the season. Hang in there my friend.
