Nice to have Allen back, hopefully he can be solid again. I wonder why Russini was in an "overnight physical altercation" with McHenry. [emoji23]

Hopefully Allen can come out against LSU like he did last week vs the U. Dang Britt didn't like Russini steppin in on her "source". Great stuff as always!

I think it was only an envitible thing that Tompkins would move up the depth chart based on his recent performances, that kid from Louisiana Williamson has me excited if you can sneak up and recruit him.

Oh coach Geezy and his ESPN women...times sure were simpler when it was just good old Erin...although there was that one incident in an airport hotel the night before a particular Arkansas game.. haha! Loving the writing as always my friend.

Love the move to put Tompkins as the starter. It was really only a matter of time really.

Big recruiting weekend for you here against LSU. This game carries even more implications than just the box score. Good luck!

Yeah, fortunately Allen's injury was only minor; I think he had a breakthrough last game, namely the tight end/short passing game usage. Hopefully this proves to be the fix he needed in order to get back to the level he was at as a freshman and also hopefully Coach Geezy can get his side-chicks under control.

Tompkins is really coming into his own. I am very excited about our offense suddenly now that he's emerged as a go-to option. I feel like I may have said this before to someone, but his emergence is really turning into a hell of a story line. Can't wait to see how his career unfolds and what the future holds for this young man.

Williamson looks like a stud, but believe it or not the guy I am most intrigued by is the fullback J.J. Williams; he could be the perfect compliment to Tompkins if we land him.

The athlete Brett Coley also looks very unique. I didn't include it in the write-up, but in addition to his 4.32 speed, he has a C- cth rating, C rte, B- tak, B- prc along with C+ mcv and zcv. Does he play DB, WR, or perhaps he is an undersized LB?

LMAO...I was wondering if someone would pick up on the Harlan angle. Thankfully, she knows better.

LOL...Glad you enjoyed the side-chick bit. Hopefully the new drama doesn't result in the same 62-27 shellacking Arkansas put on us back in 2019 when we were undefeated and the #1 team in the country (wow, can't believe how long ago that was).

This game will go a long way towards us righting the ship, both this season and future seasons. We can really turn our season around here if we can get a W and we can really pick up some key pieces for the future if we put on a good show for this bunch of prospects.

We only have like 8 scholarships coming open this off-season through graduation, so whatever we get from this group of guys will be the meat of our recruiting class (along with the 6-6 receiver Lawson) until the off-season. I'm hoping we can get at least 3 of these players before having to turn the page and start filling the class in with 2-star and 3-star guys.

Game 4, Year 14 Preview (2022 season): #13 LSU Tigers at #16 Tulane Green Wave

                GAME 4 PREVIEW

                Courtesy

RIVALRY GAME: THE BATTLE FOR THE RAG

Latest Line (courtesy Bovada - Las Vegas):

                ....................6 1/2....................

2022 - Former Tulane TE Steven Carpenter, along with wide receivers Jason Mason and Brandon McIntyre, among others, all went to midfield after last season's win to celebrate on LSU's "Eye of the Tiger," angering LSU coaches and players.

Last Meeting: Last season, in a game that featured 7 lead-changes, then-#2 ranked Tulane was able to stave off unranked LSU's upset attempt and hold on for a close 26-22 victory last season at Tiger Stadium. Then-sophomore QB Bryce Allen found fellow sophomore WR Brandon McIntyre for a 7-yard scoring hookup that gave Tulane the lead for good at 26-22 late in the third quarter. Allen finished the game with 234 passing yards and 2 touchdown passes, both to McIntyre, who finished the day with 6 receptions for 76 yards. The win for Tulane pushed head coach D. Geezy's record versus the Green Wave's in-state rivals to 8-3 overall with the Tigers' last win coming in a 31-27 contest during the 2016 season.

2021 - LEFT: Former Tulane RB Buck Johnson III carried the ball 17 times for 131 yards versus LSU two seasons ago. | RIGHT: Former Green Wave star CB Nate Hall hauled in two interceptions, including one that was returned 8 yards for a touchdown.

Last Meeting at Venue: The then #7 ranked Tulane Green Wave scored 35 unanswered points, cruising to a 35-7 victory over then #10 ranked LSU two seasons ago at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. The Tigers took an early 7-0 lead when their former QB Akeem Wallace found then-freshman WR Eric Daniel for a 61-yard first quarter touchdown. However, following a scoreless second quarter, Green Wave RB Buck Johnson III scored twice in the 3rd quarter to make the score 21-7. Then, in the fourth quarter, then-freshman QB Bryce Allen connected with former Wave TE Steven Carpenter for a 23-yard score and former Wave CB Nate Hall scored on a short, 8-yard interception return to put the game away.

Despite recent success for Tulane, LSU holds a staggering 72-30-7 all-time record versus their arch-rivals.

                Head Coach D. Geezy's Take

Tulane head coach D. Geezy addressed the media Wednesday afternoon after practice.

After some early struggles, we clearly have an opportunity to turn this thing around and build some momentum here. LSU is our top rival, and they almost beat us last season, so we know this won't be an easy task.

The #1 key to stopping them is RB Jonathan Davis (85 ovr). At 6-0 257 pounds with good speed, he is like a bowling ball back there and already has 533 yards through only three games this season. He reminds us a lot of former NFL RB Michael Turner. If we struggle to stop him from rolling, we can be in some trouble. We need to score early and hopefully force them to not be able to rely on him.

We like our matchups overall in this one but anytime two rivals meet, we know that nothing matters - stats, matchups, etc. They don't like us and we don't like them. They're coming into our building that they haven't won in for a long time, and we expect to get their 'A' game.

                - Tulane head coach D. Geezy

How in the hell is LSU #13? I was getting ready to say that Tulane needs to be wary of all the LSU guys who remember them celebrating at midfield last season but looking their roster - I can't figure out how they have a Top 20 offense and defense (because they played New Mexico State and Western Michigan, that's how). I think Tulane's front four is going to have a huge game and LSU's secondary looks like Allen can dip and dunk his way to a successful game.

I know, I know - anything can happen in a rivalry game. But I'm not holding my breath on LSU being a problem.

Big game here for the Wave. I know the Tigers will come in wanting to get the victory to return the mid-field celebration the Wave did in Death Valley last season. Tulane's LBs better come with their chinstraps buckled and everything that got for that 18-Wheeler that LSU will be handing the ball to in Davis. If your O-Line can create some holes for Tompkins he could break a couple. There is not one person on the LSU D that comes close in speed. Your Front 7 should cause problems when LSU has to pass. Let's protect the Dome!!!

I have to agree with the general consensus here that on paper LSU looks surprising week. I think you'll be able to muscle their offensive line off the ball and that should help with slowing down Jonathan Davis. The only other part of their team I am really in love with is the middle of their defensive line. I know Hollis was a guy once upon a time we were hoping that Tulane would land. Good luck in this one my friend!

Their roster isn't that impressive, you're right, but I think they have what it takes to win if we aren't careful - a very good looking running back along with a strong defensive line that can possible give us problems running. We have certainly lost to much worse teams, so I am not taking any game for granted, especially a rivalry game like this.
Just from the small sample size of the last game and also my practice mode work this week, I think Allen and the offense has turned the corner. It just took a few games to adjust to the new playbook and we also have added a few new wrinkles now that Tompkins is showing us that he is a baller.

If we avoid early turnovers or giving them early momentum, I can see the game playing out just the way you've described. My biggest fear is Jonathan Davis carving us up. Despite their OL being suspect, in this game, especially on Heisman mode, that may not matter that much. We may get more sacks or TFLs than normal, but I am sure those guys are still competent enough to get the job done and allow him to break a few runs if we don’t have a good game run-fit wise.

Look for a big game from Tompkins here hopefully. He is "the guy" now and I really see him emerging as a go-to player for us. He's providing just the spark we needed and as I alluded to above, expect for his involvement to start expanding here.

I continue to be amazed by your recall ability; you certainly pick up on virtually every little nuance there is in this dynasty report. I actually had considered doing a short "Hot off the Wire" piece on Tyrone Hollis and LB Chuckie Coley from my team being former high school teammates, since I mentioned it back when they were recruited. But I decided not to bog down the latest update with a fluff piece when there was more important news to update on.

I really hope you're right about their OL; we are overdue for a completely dominate performance by our D-Line and pass rush. I plan to blitz the heck out of them and really test those interior linemen in particular.

Offensively, I want to get Tompkins going early, but I also think their secondary is ripe for some shots downfield because they have a severe speed deficiency back there.

LSU has a lot of players rated 78-79; a part of me thinks that if all those guys were rated 80, just a point or two higher, suddenly their roster doesn't appear as weak. I am always concerned with those high 70 guys. To me, 75-79 rated players are usually still pretty darn good if they get rolling, especially if they have speed.

I appreciate everyone's optimism, but let’s not also forget that we have some weak spots on our team too. This one can go either way if we don't bring our 'A' game.

Time to kick this one off...thanks fellas!

Excited for this game! Looks like a tough matchup at the skill positions, but my goodness the OL of LSU looks to be an absolute cupcake. That's the key to the game, if your front 4 can consistently bust through the line then the "bowling ball" won't be able to burn you and you should coast in this one.

Surprisingly, their offensive line wasn't quite as penetrable as I was expecting. I don't know why we're having such a difficult time getting to the quarterback lately. Fortunately, it didn't matter and you indeed did get the "you should coast in this one" part right...

Tulane continues its dominance of in-state SEC rival LSU in 28-3 victory, gets back to .500 following 0-2 start | For the second straight week, Green Wave defense holds their opponent out of the end zone | QB Allen shows no ill-effects from his injured elbow, accounts for 4 touchdowns and no turnovers as Wave picks up 7th straight victory in "The Battle for the Rag" | Team will look to build on its momentum next week at home versus SEC cellar-dweller Vanderbilt

New Orleans, LA -- For the first 98 meetings between Tulane and LSU, prior to head coach D. Geezy's arrival, the Green Wave had never beaten the Tigers more that three times in a row as the school amassed a dreadful 22-69-7 all-time record versus their rivals 90 minutes away down U.S. Interstate-10. Saturday night at the Mercedes-Benz-Superdome however, the Wave extended its current win streak over their in-state rivals to 7, knocking off the Tigers in dominant fashion 28-3. #16 Tulane's offense played a nearly mistake-free game while its suddenly resurgent defense kept their opponent out of the end zone for a second consecutive week en route to a big win to open SEC play for the Green Wave.

Junior CB D.J. Keyes caught his first interception of his career Saturday night. Tulane's defense has yet to allow a single touchdown since Keyes was added to the lineup following the team's 0-2 start.

LSU (2-2) would start the contest off relatively successfully, marching right down the field on the game's opening possession. Their 8-play march, aided by a couple of big runs by RB Jonathan Davis, culminated with a 46-yard field goal by PK Phillip Ruffin, giving the Tigers and early 3-0 edge.

Tulane in-turn would take its opening possession on a long drive that penetrated deep into Tigers territory. However Tigers SS Tyrone Everett's big hit on Wave TE Ronnie Parsons following a 20-yard reception resulted in a fumble that was recovered by LSU LB Mark Henley, and the Tigers had all the momentum - or so they thought.

Just two plays following the Green Wave's turnover, Tulane DT Mikeangelo Daniels' strip-sack of Tigers QB John Blount would result in a fumble recovery by DE Graham Collier, setting the Wave up right back with the football at their own 41-yard line.

Ten plays and 59 yards later, Tulane QB Bryce Allen's 6-yard scoring toss to WR Brandon McIntyre gave their team a 7-3 lead and they'd never look back. Allen, who was forced to leave last week's game due to an elbow injury, showed no signs of being slowed down, as he started the game 10 of 11 for 114 yards and 1 touchdown in the first quarter, with his lone incompletion coming on an intentional throw-away to avoid a sack in the red zone. Despite being forced to wear extra padding on his throwing arm this week, he'd continue that pace the rest of the way.

Later, in the second quarter, Allen would take his team on a 9-play 70-yard march that lasted just over three minutes. This time, the possession would conclude with a short 3-yard touchdown pass to RB Tony Tompkins out of the backfield, extending the Wave's lead to 14-3. Tompkins, who came into the game red hot after posting back-to-back 100-yard rushing games, cooled off Saturday night but still finished the game with 58 rushing yards on 13 carries along with 3 receptions for 50 yards and the score.

Allen and the Tulane offensive success wasn't over just yet.

After the Green Wave defense got yet another stop, Allen would take his squad again on another long, time consuming drive. This time, a 12-play 80-yard drive that lasted over four minutes ended with Allen finding WR Jason Mason on third and goal for an 8-yard touchdown that blew the game open, making the score 21-3 late in the second quarter.

QB Bryce Allen was steady all night Saturday, finishing the game an efficient 18 of 24 for 237 yards along with 3 touchdowns and no interceptions while also picking up his first career rushing touchdown.
"We really did an excellent job of getting early stops defensively and then turning around and taking the ball on long drives and eating up the time of possession while finishing drives with touchdowns," said Geezy to CBS sideline reporter Allie LaForce during Saturday night's telecast as he headed to the halftime locker room.

That exact trend would continue after the break.

Allen continued to dink and dunk his way down the field, utilizing receivers, tight ends, running backs, and even his fullback, getting first down after first down. The team's 10-play 86-yard drive that lasted over four minutes would finally conclude when Allen found no receivers open and decided to tuck the ball and run and bulldozed his way into the end zone for a 16-yard touchdown that made the score 28-3. The rushing touchdown was the first of Allen's career, and he finished the night 18 of 24 for 237 yards and three touchdowns through the air.

"We really wanted to get what we call our "90-game" going - that is short passes, three step drops, utilizing the backs and tight ends in addition to our receivers," said Tulane second year offensive coordinator Curtis Byrd.

"We felt like Bryce and this unit as a whole really had a breakthrough this week at practice and it showed up in the game."

While the Green Wave's offense had an efficient performance, the team's defense was also busy dominating. LSU was held to just 220 total yards on the day, while Blount was held to only 131 passing yards. Davis, who came into Saturday night with 533 rushing yards through only three games this season, was held to a season-low 85 rushing yards on the ground, as the game being out of reach limited most of his second half usage.

"This was just a total team victory today," said Geezy, who was able to remove his team's starters from the lineup early in the fourth quarter.

"Both the offense and the defense played well tonight and complimented each other well; kudos to Coach Byrd and to Coach (Steve) Ellis for the job they were able to do with excellent game plans and week of work. We did a good job of keeping their offense off the field with long drives and even though we gave up a few big runs, we did not let Jonathan Davis kill us. We got the big lead and were able to take him out of the game. I am very proud of our team tonight and the direction this thing is heading.

"Our arrow is certainly pointed back up again."

Tulane (3-1) will host Vanderbilt (1-3) next week at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. In their last meeting, the Green Wave blew away the Commodores 62-26 at Nashville in 2019. The Wave's 62 points that night were the most points scored ever by the team under Geezy.

RB Jonathan Davis and the LSU offense had no answers for Tulane's suddenly stingy defense.

Already down 3-0 early, Tulane's first offensive possession came to a jarring conclusion when TE Ronnie Parsons was blasted by LSU SS Tyrone Everett and coughed the ball up.

Just a few plays following Parsons' turnover, Green Wave DT Mikeangelo Daniels' sack resulted in LSU QB John Blount losing the football and DE Graham Collier recovered it.

Junior WR Brandon McIntyre's 6-yard touchdown reception was his third score this season and put the Wave on top 7-3 with just seconds remaining in the first quarter.

Sophomore RB Tony Tompkins' 100-yard rushing streak came to an end Saturday night, but he was still very effective while finishing with 108 yards total yards from scrimmage, including this 3-yard touchdown reception that extended the Green Wave's lead to 14-3 midway through the second quarter.

Junior WR Jason Mason got into the end zone for the first time this season when he snagged this 8-yard third down reception that made the score 21-3 a couple of minutes before halftime.

QB Bryce Allen capped off his stellar performance by dragging in LSU senior CB Keith Gore for this 16-yard rushing touchdown that made the score 28-3. The score was Allen's first rushing touchdown of his career.
