The Coaching Career of Alex Irving

Irving becomes NCAA's youngest coach, lands job at D1 LIU Brooklyn to start collegiate career

Long Island, NY - At 28 years old, Bayville coach Alex Irving was not only the youngest HS head coach on Long Island, but he was also the one with the best record over the past 4 seasons, the past three ending in Long Island championships, the past two ending is Class AAA State Championships. He had been a star at Bayville himself, the 6'5 former SF being a 4 year varsity player and a 2 year captain while leading his team to a championship, as a player. Despite the success as a player, he had no interest in playing at the next level, preferring analyzing basketball situations from the sideline. He decided to remain at Bayville for 6 years, working as the assistant coach until his head coach and mentor, Jay Reynolds, took the job at St. Francis College (Brooklyn). Reynolds had some to say about his coaching prodigy's recent promotion:

I love Alex to death. He was definitely one of the best ballplayers I coached with Bayville, and he's accomplished more as a coach in 4 years than I did in 20. Although it'll be odd for him to be on the opposite side during our conference games, I look forward to the challenge.

When asked how he felt about landing the new job, and how he thought his style of play would fit in the college game, Irving said:

I am absolutely honored to have landed the job at such a young age. I'm sure that there was other more experienced candidates with actual college experience, but nothing changes for me. I'll continue to try and run teams out of the gym. Havoc II, my full court press, is gonna be on display, and I'll continue to play fast, efficient offense. The good thing about this is that I'll be able to recruit kids that I know are a good fit for the system I'm trying to create here at LIU.

Irving: Lack of size won't be a problem

None of my Bayville teams were reliant on size or post-play either. This group is gritty, and even if it appears to be a tough year for us, I'll make sure that these boys are competing every game. They're all good kids, and so far, they're buying in and understand what I want them to do on the court, but we don't know how we'll do until we go to Notre Dame tomorrow.

Re: The Coaching Career of Alex Irving

      Long Island @ Notre Dame

In Alex Irving's coaching debut, LIU takes a fall, losing to Notre Dame 74-60. Irving had previously made headlines around the New York City basketball scene, saying that a lack of size wouldn't be too big of a problem for his team. However, one game in, it seems like he made that statement too soon, as Notre Dame's frontcourt went for a combined 29 points and 20 rebounds (The Irish actually doubled the Blackbirds in rebounding). On the LIU side, Senior SF Gerard Maxiell had 21 points and 5 rebounds, leading the team in both.

"We have to do a better job of boxing out, and we definitely could use some improvement to our transition defense. However, our full court press worked well, and only losing by 14 to an ACC school is a promising start to the season. They may be the best team we see all year, and despite the loss, we'll be leaving South Bend knowing what we'll need to do better the next time around.

Re: The Coaching Career of Alex Irving

        Quick Note:

        - I'm playing 13 minute halves, all-conference. That'll explain the lowered minutes. I may decide to move up to 15 or 16 minute halves, depending on how the stats look at 13. I do plan on running an 8 or 9 man rotation all year, so it's likely that the starters play 20+ minutes anyway.

        - These are custom fictional rosters (I made Jay Reynolds a rival coach on purpose, and you'll see Brad Stevens as a coach at Butler, etc. as I couldn't get the xbox rosters due to having a macbook and not being able to use Horizon)

The Coaching Career of Alex Irving

          Coach's Office, Part I

Irving: Alright, so that wasn't the best start to the season. I'm glad we were able to outscore them in the second half, but our guards couldn't take their press, and our bigs weren't able to hold them off. That means we have two priorities when it comes to recruiting: guards, and bigs. Ed, what can you tell me about your trip to Cameroon.

Assistant Ed Rivera: Okay, so there was two kids I really liked, one was a PG, the kid's name is Songondo. He makes good decisions with the ball, and despite being a little undersized at 6'0, I think he'd be a great fit to run the show. I have a connect out there sending me game film as it goes, and I did get to speak to the kid and his parents. They want him to play in the States, and he likes the idea of being in New York City for school. However, he wants to start right away. The second kid was a 6'8 PF named Guy Ngarndi. He's a solid rebounder and uses his size to his advantage. He just wants to play D1 basketball, and he doesn't want to ride the bench. I think that being a small school gives us an advantage, given that these kids will probably play right away.

Irving: Good, good. I want more film on both. What can you tell me about the Serbian kid playing in the 17u's for Serbia, Mihailovic?

Rivera: He's your typical european big. 6'8 and skinny, solid mid-range jumper. He looked like a decent rebounder, but again this is against a bunch of other 17 year olds. I want to see more of him before offering, but I definitely do like the other two and I'd send offers their way, ASAP. Rob was also looking at two kids from the states, one from Texas, one from Cali.

Assistant Rob Joseph: I was looking at replacements for Maxiell, who'll probably lead us in scoring, but he graduates this year. There was two 3 star guys I liked, but let's start with the first kid, from El Paso, Texas. He's a solid all-around player, athletic, big, shoots it well enough. He's about 6'7/210, which fares well for him sliding to the floor if needed. He averaged 10/7 on the ABL circuit, and shot 40% from 3. That's Antonio Fordham. Now the next kid, Stephon Roberts, is a bit smaller at 6'6/200, but he seems to be similar. He's probably a better defender and shooter, but I hear that if USC sends an offer his way, he's gone. Personally I want to scout these guys more before making a decision on who to offer.

          _______________________

Irving: Okay, good. This is great. Did you see that Jay's SFC team beat St. John's by 2 last night? What the ****?

Rivera: Yeah, I try not to think about Jay Reynolds much. I don't like the guy and he's one of the pretentious individuals in coaching at the moment. He went all lovey-dovey in the media when you landed the job, yet me and Rob were the ones who designed his system at Bayville. He gave us no credit for the championship he won when you were captain, it was ridiculous. I haven't talked to him since I resigned after that season.

Irving: Yeah it was odd, considering I haven't talked to him since he got the SFC job. Once he left Bayville for Brooklyn Heights, it's like he forgot anyone existed, and now he's going off in the media telling everyone he loves me. It's okay, we'll get ours when they come to our house on January 10th.

Re: The Coaching Career of Alex Irving

            LIU-Brooklyn @ Army

In what seems like it could've been a blowout, the LIU Blackbirds won their first game of the season, winning 71-60 against Army. Sophomore Brannon Blackett led the team in scoring, with 24, hitting 6 threes in the process. Gerard Maxiell also had 18 points and 8 rebounds for the Blackbirds, and Pat Massogo of Army led all scorers with 28 points.

The game was close until Coach Irving switched out of his preferred man-to-man defense, into a 2-3 zone. His high school squads never ran much zone, so it was a shocking adjustment that seemed to have worked out, to say the least. Despite the 'Birds not getting any blocks this game, the guard rotation of Linebaugh, Blackett, and Ingerson seemed more comofortable in the zone, and were absolutely swarming the Army guards, ending with a combined 5 steals and forcing 5 turnovers out of them.

Here's what Coach Irving had to say about his first win:

"Blackett shot the lights out today, and Gerard and Jamion also played great, but I really felt like we could have played better. We were up 23 at one point in the second half, so I let the end of the bench get some time on the court, but it almost resulted in a comeback, and that's unacceptable. Our press wasn't working as well as it did last time, and we still allowed one of their guys to get double-digit rebounds, so despite the win, we have the same problems. It felt good to get that weight off my shoulders and get my first collegiate win, but now the focus is on our first home game next week against Columbia."

              LIU vs Columbia
              simulated*

In Coach Irving's first home game, coming off of some good performances in their first two games, you'd expect the team to be fired up and read to roll, facing off against a Columbia team that was nowhere near as threatening as the Notre Dame team from the opener. However, the opposite happened, and the Blackbirds lost big, 71-47. The same problems from the previous games came back; the Blackbirds allowed 33 rebounds between three players (letting up 38 rebounds to their 34), and turned the ball over 16 times. It also didn't help that LIU only scored 17 first half points, and Columbia was able to neutralize Gerard Maxiell, holding him to 6 points and 10 rebounds on 2-11 shooting. Brannon Blackett led the 'Birds in scoring with 11 points. On the Columbia side, Senior Emeka Burnett led the team with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Sophomore Petie Rodriguez had 12 points on 5/7 shooting. The Blackbirds next play at home against Canisius. This is what Irving had to say about his team's big loss:

"Pathetic. Absolutely no heart shown. It's only the third game of the season, and I felt like some of our guys quit after being down 11 at half. We definitely need to crash the boards more instead of leaking out for the fast break. Apparently we can't make free throws either, so that's new. Brannon had another good game, but it didn't mean much because we couldn't stop their bigs in the second half. The boys have are gonna have some long days of practice ahead of them before the Canisius game."

                LIU vs Canisius
                *simulated

After a terrible performance in Coach Irving's first home game (against Columbia), the Blackbirds of LIU got their first home of the season, besting Canisius, 82-70. Senior Gerard Maxiell had 20 points and 8 rebounds, leading the team in both. Sophomore guard Brannon Blackett had 12 points on 4/7 shooting, and big-man Jaron Chalmers came off the bench and had 10 points and 2 rebounds. Leadbetter led Canisius in scoring, with 16.

"It was nice win for us, and definitely one we needed coming off of a big loss. We did still manage to get outrebounded this game, but I definitely felt better about the way we shot the ball (54% from 3, 47% FG). I hope Jermareo and Ingerson make better decisions with the ball next time around, because we can't slack at all against St. John's next week. We need a third guy to step up, because Gerard and Brannon can't be the only guys putting the ball in the hoop."

Re: The Coaching Career of Alex Irving

Following their win against Canisius, SFC coach Jay Reynolds had some to say about Alex Irving and the Blackbirds.

“He’s got them playing well. I fully expected them to be 0-4 at this point, your first season as a college coach should always be rough, but he’s working around it I guess.”

How do you think he’ll fare against St. John’s this week?

“I think our team is better suited to win games than they are, so I don’t think they’ll be able to outlast the Johnnies for 40 minutes. Irv is a talented young coach, but one game against Notre Dame and a couple state championships doesn’t mean he knows how to win big games. I know the kid more than anyone, his temper can get the best of him and pressure situations weren’t his forte.”

A clip rolls of the 1999 NY State Championship. A younger looking Jay Reynolds, screams out “Fist 3” while his players set up their play, running to their spots. Tie game, the clock reads 15 seconds, and we see #3, Alex Irving, get the ball on the wing as he awaits a screen. Noticeably slower than usual, he fakes using the screen and crosses from right to left, having an open lane to the hoop with 10 seconds left. He takes two steps, then elevates. 8 seconds left. If he makes this, Bayville is up two with barely any time to spare. He extends his left hand, and he’s met by a Dix Heights defender, seemingly flying toward him. The ball goes up, bodies collide, and it goes through the cylinder. A whistle is blown, and usually there’s happiness after the bucket and the whistle, but an eerie silence followed it. Irving layed on the floor, motionless, breathing heavily. He was trying to be calm, like he had been in this situation before, but it was impossible. The fear on his eyes was obvious when he looked down at his legs. His right knee, for the third time in 2 years, was giving him a white-hot sensation he couldn’t take. And then the screams came. Bayville assistant Ed Rivera runs over to Irving, kneeling next to him and talking to him. The entire bench followed. There were 7 seconds left, Bayville was on the brink of a title, yet the world was focused on their star player and captain, getting injured for what felt like the 100th time. Everyone surrounded the injured hero, everyone except Coach Jay Reynolds.

                  What happened here, Coach Reynolds?

“Alex gets a screen from Chuck Pierre, our center at the time. He’s supposed to attract the two defenders, then hit Pierre cutting to the hoop. Pierre’s cut either results in a layup, or a corner 3 from one of our other guards. He made a bad decision, went to the hoop instead of running the play correctly, and it cost him. I wish nothing bad upon Alex, and I welcome his aggressiveness, but maybe he should’ve been more hesitant to drive when the opposing team has a 6’11/275 center who had a scholarship to Duke on his lap, especially considering his injury history.”
                  __________________________

In the office, Alex and Ed are seeing watching the interview being given, Alex looking like he’s about to explode.

AI: “What? What the **** is this ******* talking about? I made the layup, and got up and hit the free throw on a partially torn ACL. I wasn’t even supposed to play that championship game! He paid off the athletic trainer to clear me for that, but ofcourse he can’t say that on national TV.”

Ed: “He’ll get his. We have to explain the significance of the SFC games to the boys next practice. Tell them that these games mean more to us than any other games that they’ll play this season. If we really rally the troops and get Gerard going, I think the matchup is favorable for us regardless of where we play.”

                    LIU @ St. John's

You'd think that with the contreversial comments made by a rival coach, Coach Irving's Blackbirds would come out firing. And they did. But they couldn't stop St. John's attack, taking the L, 86-65. The 'Birds took went uptempo, taking 78 shots, to the Johnnies' 53. However, they shot 36% from the field, and made 8 less FGs, despite taking 25 more shots. St John's did a great job limiting the Blackbirds' top 2 scorers, Gerard Maxiell and Brannon Blackett, making them shot a combined 15/40 from the field, and 6/15 from three. There was a bright spot for the Blackbirds, as Freshman PF Jaron Chalmers came off the bench for 10 and 7.

LIU simply couldn't stop St John's perimeter starters, as the Guards and SF combined for 48 points. Junior SF and the team's leading scorer Stevie Krauser went for 20/4/3 on 7/12 shooting, and freshman PF Joaquim Coulibaly had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Here's what Coach Irving had to say about the loss:

"They flat out just beat us. I thought switching to a more uptempo game would surprise them, but they adapted right away. They've got some really talented guards, and their big definitely did his job today. Normally I'd be mad at Brannon for shooting so terribly today, but we were down big and that means he gets to pull it from deep whenever he feels like it. Gerard played well but shot badly, and Jaron should expect more minutes. I don't think it would've made a difference, but the refs were playing pin the tail on the god-damn Blackbird out there. They called some BS on Blackett and Perry, so I made it a priority to get on their asses about it."

LIU's next game is against Hartford at home.

LIU Coach Irving fined 10k for his post-game comments

After a tough loss against St. John's, newly hired LIU Coach Alex Irving made some unflattering comments towards the referees in his post-game interview. He described them as "playing pin the tail on the Blackbird" and said he "made it a priority to get on their asses about it."

LIU Athletic Director Timothy Clark announced that due to the nature of these comments and the profanity, he would be fining Coach Irving 10 thousand dollars.

"The comments were absolutely unacceptable." said Clark of his coach.

"Us at Long Island University don't tolerate that kind of behavior from our players, coaches, or anyone in the athletic department. I've talked to Alex and he's deeply regretful of his comments, and he assures it won't happen again."

                        LIU vs Hartford

                        *simulated

The Blackbirds continue their slump, losing 76-69 after being up 6 at half, eventually letting Hartford outscore them by 13 in the second half. Leading scorer Gerard Maxiell only played 13 minutes due to foul trouble, and ended up fouling out anyway. LIU continued their bad shooting, ending up going 23/57(40% from the field) and 5/19 from three (26%).The two leading scorers, Blackett and Maxiell, went 2 for 13 from the field. Jermareo Linebaugh and Perry Whitted had their best games of the season, Linebaugh ending with 18 points, 7 assists and 3 steals, while Whitted had 15 points and 6 rebounds. Freshman Rulon Gastel of Hartford led all scorers with 17, while his teammate, Paulius Goodson, went for 17 points, 6 assists and 4 rebounds. The Blackbirds' next game is the start of conference play, where they'll be on the road against Mount St. Mary.

"I think my boys played well, for the most part. Our interior defense was awful, and our shooting in general sucked too, but it was good to see guys like Linebaugh and Whitted step up when their leader wasn't able to be on the court. I wasn't happy with Maxiell's last foul, but that's where I have to suck it up and work with the players I have. I think we're in good shape, despite being 2-4, to go into conference play. I think the banter about us makes coaches around the NEC believe that we aren't good, but me and my boys are ready to prove them wrong."

                              NEC PREVIEW

                              1. Robert Morris (5-3)

With a solid overall starting lineup, Robert Morris is the most talented team in the NEC this year. They haven't had any wins against great teams, but they did best a decent Iona team in their opener. All of their losses have been away games, so that's something to note.

                              Key Players:

                              Deanthony Jones, 6'3 SG, Jr. - 13.9 ppg/4.1 rpg/1 spg
                              Jamal Hogan, 6'6 PF, Sr. - 12.5 ppg/7.4 rpg

                              2. St Francis College (4-3)

Jay Reynolds has his team playing way beyond expectations, as they were expected to be near the bottom of the NEC, but they've pulled out some decent wins this year (@ St. John's, vs Fairfield). They should be 5-2, but a loss at the buzzer to Ohio prevented that. Don't be surprised if they win the conference.

                              Key Players:

                              Howard Nubine, 6'5 PF, Sr. - 10.1 ppg/6.6 rpg
                              Aldrin Jeffries, 6'3 SG, Sr. - 9.0 ppg/5.3 rpg

                              3. Sacred Heart (5-3)

Sacred Heart comes in at No. 3 with a conference win against Monmouth already on their belt. They aren't particularly talented, but they have a pair of sophomores starting in the backcourt that'll keep them good for at least two more years. Their losses came to Hartford (3-6), St. John's (3-2), and Columbia (7-3).

                              Key Players:

                              Radee Fernandez, 6'4 PF, Sr. - 13.4 ppg/6.9 rpg
                              Chuck Jameson, 6'4 SG, So. - 13.0 ppg/7.0 rpg

                              4. Wagner (4-4)

Wagner probably has the second most talent after Robert Morris, but they somehow stumbled upon a .500 record despite not playing too hard of a schedule. A win against Columbia saved them, otherwise they may not even be in the top 5.

                              Key Players:

                              Trent Konate, 6'5 SF, Jr. - 10.3 ppg/2.8 rpg/1.5 apg
                              Sidney Peavy, 6'0 PG, Sr. - 10 ppg/3.3 rpg/4.5 apg

                              5. Quinnipiac (3-3)

Rounding out the top 5 is Quinnipiac, who's been a bit of a mystery this year. They've played close games besides a 20 point loss against Binghamton, and a 35 point win against New Hampshire. They haven't played anyone too good yet, but we'll see what happens when they get a real test in #14 UCONN, on December 16th.

                              Key Players:

                              Sean Penigar, 6'4 SG, Sr. - 14.7 ppg/3.7 rpg/2 spg
                              Poncho Greenleaf, 5'8 PG, So. - 11 ppg/4 apg/2 spg

                              THE REST

                              6. Long Island (2-4)
                              7. Saint Francis U (3-4)
                              8. Central Connecticut (2-5)
                              9. Fairleigh Dickinson (1-3)
                              10. Monmouth (1-6)
                              11. Mount St. Mary's (1-5)
                              Miami Heat
                              New York Yankees
