Not only a great win over a conference rival but picking up the #2 overall prospect, especially being on the defensive side of the ball, is a huge get. Seems like a great weekend for Tulane!

Huge signing in Williamson. I am really really excited to see him come in and start day one. I think he will bring that slash linebacker position back to prominence. Will he be the next Mark Richards? I think that is probably a tall order but I think he could become the face of this defense and put the fear back in the front seven.

I know it is very early but this class is starting to feel, between Williamson and Lawson, like the next face of Tulane superstars...

Thanks Bookwork. Williamson certainly looks like a solid building block at worst and a potential superstar at best. Obviously I will have to wait to see how his ratings come out, but I imagine he will start day 1 for us.

Yeah you definitely did point him out. I honestly didn't think I had a chance - we were third on his list going into that visit, so obviously he must've liked what he saw. Maybe Eve Jewell paid him a nice visit too.

I envision using him all over the field on defense and on special teams. This is my first blue chip linebacker recruit and I am excited to see him on the field next year.

What is his coverage ratings like? Like I just mentioned if he's adequate his size can make him an in-the-box safety as well. Add to his DE qualities and you have a future stud.
Haha...I thought about "Son" and I also thought about simply calling the older Sean Williams "Pops."

I actually had not even considered his coverage ratings but they look pretty good (B- zcv, C mcv). I had envisioned him more so as a LB/DE type, but now that you've pointed it out and made me look at it, him playing some in-the-box safety may be something we look at as well. I can't wait to see this guy on the field next season.

And that looks like it'll be true for the near future with the BIG recruit pickup in Williamson!
Thanks Moose...Yeah I guess we don't look so bad when we aren't turning the ball over 5+ times. LOL

I am more excited than ever about this team. That 0-2 start has really rejuvenated me. I think we have turned the corner and I think Bryce Allen and company is poised to go on a special run here. I just have to continue to focus on one game at a time and most importantly, not turning the ball over.

Second on the recruiting trail the Talent in Louisiana looks pretty crazy this year. Looks like the '14 class IRL. Coach Geezy is keeping them boys at home and away from Bama the fence is up and Bama is keep locking them boys up coach.
I think we have finally found our way as a team. It took a couple of games to get used to the new Miami playbook and now I think we have it down and it shows.

There were a couple of very lean years for some reason recruiting wise, not just in Louisiana, but in the nation as a whole, in like 2019-2020. Our recruiting bed that had been so fertile suddenly wasn't producing talent like normal and I think it is showing up not only with our team, but across the nation. This anomaly has seemed to correct itself the past couple of seasons and hopefully we can get back to having plenty of star talent to choose from in our home state.

I looked at the nation as a whole, and it seems like the overall team ratings went down a tad across the board due to those couple of bad recruiting pools, but most of the top teams look to be in position to start to rise back up again here in the near future, including ourselves.

Yes sir...no doubt this was a successful weekend for the Green Wave. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come. I think this team is very close to being able to contend for a title and getting these "plug and play" types will certainly go a long way next season.

I am glad you mentioned Mark Richards...he was the first guy that came to mind when I got Williamson. I think the two are very comparable, and it made me want to go back and look at Richards' attributes to verify. They are both from Louisiana, they both ran a 4.58 40-time, and the rest of their attributes are very similar, with the blue chip Williamson having the slight edge over the legendary 3-star recruit Mark Richards (2013), who came in as a 78 overall:

I'll tell you what, you and I are on the same page as far as this class. It will be a small one, probably in the neighborhood of 8 to 12 guys depending on early departures, but I have a strong feeling that this group of players may be the group that gets us back to the top. Both Lawson and Williamson have the look of game-changers on their respective sides of the ball, and we aren't done adding star talent just yet (hopefully)!

We're not expecting to lose very many guys from the team after this season ::::knock on wood:::, so we really have a chance here next season to make our move and add on to an already good-looking team that will only get better after another year of progression.

Game 5, Year 14 Preview (2023 season): Vanderbilt Commodores at #13 Tulane Green Wave

          GAME 5 PREVIEW

Latest Line (courtesy Bovada - Las Vegas):

          ....................31 1/2....................

2019: On the game's final play, Tulane then-freshman CB Nate Hall intercepted Vandy QB Bernard Robinson and promptly lateraled the ball to then-sophomore SS Troy Cowan while being tackled. Cowan would catch the lateral and return it 27 yards for a touchdown as the clock expired, making the final score 62-26. The play gave Tulane 62 points, the most points scored ever by the Wave under head coach D. Geezy.

Last Meeting: Then-#1 ranked Tulane's backs were against the wall, up just 24-20 late in the third quarter versus heavy-underdog Vanderbilt. However the Green Wave would go on to outscore the Commodores 38-6 the rest of the way on their way to a 62-26 blowout victory at Nashville in 2019. Former Green Wave QB Preston Fields threw for 370 yards and 4 touchdown passes while redshirt senior RB B.J. Johnson accounted for 243 all-purpose yards during the big victory. Then-true freshman star WR Ryan Jean also torched the overwhelmed Vanderbilt secondary, hauling in 4 receptions for 196 yards and 2 touchdowns, as his team's 62-point scoring output that day was the most points scored ever by the Green Wave under head coach D. Geezy.

2018: Former Tulane great Jamie Manning finds former Wave WR Larry Woods who got behind the defense for a 52-yard touchdown which made the score 17-3 just before halftime.

Last Meeting at Venue: Then-junior QB Jamie Manning threw for 345 yards and 3 touchdowns while then-freshman FS Troy Cowan racked up 13 tackles, 1 sack, and 1 interception as Tulane cruised to a 37-3 blowout win over Vanderbilt in 2018 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Former Wave standout WR Brandon McNeil torched the Commodores secondary for 178 yards on 7 receptions along with 1 touchdown, and then-redshirt junior WR Larry Woods contributed 5 receptions for 91 yards and a score as the Green Wave improved to 5-0 during their second of two national title winning seasons.

Um what is going on at Vamdy with players ranked so low? They better drop those admisson standards so they can get some ballers right now their roster looks sad. The way your Defense has been playing Im expecting a very solid win if not total blow out. I know games aren't played on paper but this should be easy for Coach Geezy

Not gonna lie, I'm gonna be slightly disappointed if this doesn't turn out to be a 2016 Michigan-Rutgers smashfest. I know it's highly improbable to win by 78, but wow. What a disparity between the two squads.

In all seriousness, I'm wondering why Vandy is in the SEC with that mess of a roster. At least they beat Ole Miss.

As many have said, Vandy's roster is an absolute shamble. Outside of Gorman and Patterson, I really am not seeing much here. Hopefully this will be nice tune up game for you and a chance for both sides of the ball to really shine.

Nope, sadly there are no typos. These guys are just awful up front. I plan to blitz heavy and try to get us past our current sack drought (we have averaged only 1 sack per game the past three weeks).

I hope you're right bro. It'll be nice to be able to enjoy a blowout and also get the young guys some second half P.T.

They're clearly struggling in the recruiting race. It is like once you fall into the abyss in this game, it is hard to climb out of. They got themselves up to a C- overall briefly a few years back, but outside of that lone flirtation with "average," they've been steadily going down hill.

Full disclosure, for the past two seasons I have actually toyed with Vandy and Kentucky's out of conference schedules, giving them 4 FCS out of conference games in an effort to get them some wins and get their prestige up (I got them both up to 2-star prestige this season), but they've managed to still lose games.

I'm going to do my best Bill Belichik impression here. This game will be a challenge and I'll tell you why:

                        - We have lost games to bad teams before and also have had bad teams play us very close. Some examples that come to mind:

2020: Lost at Ole Miss 38-31 in OT

                        2021: Barely beat Kentucky 13-2

                        2019: Barely beat Kentucky 40-31

2016: Barely held on for a win 45-35 versus Louisiana Tech

                        - Vanderbilt has two very fast receivers as well as a very fast running back; if we allow those guys to get behind our defense, we may not be able to catch them. Our secondary doesn't have a ton of speed at corner, so it is plausible for us to get burned.

                        - We have had struggles every now and then versus teams that run a spread, no huddle offense. If they get hot, they could give us some fits.

Ah screw it, who am I kidding? This should be a snoozer!

Yeah those two scare me, but I would hope our talent advantage will shine through enough to where those guys are pretty limited. It'll be nice to go against this spread no huddle attack before we face a very-similar offensive style at Auburn. And this can also be a "get right" game for some guys off to slow starts this season.

                        Time to do this....thanks fellas!

Game 5, Year 14 (2023 season): Vanderbilt Commodores at #13 Tulane Green Wave

                          N/R 17 -- 1-4 (1-3)
                          #13 42 -- 3-2 (2-0)

Sophomore RB Tony Tompkins dove into the end zone after returning this kickoff for a touchdown to open the second half; it was his second return touchdown of the game.

Sophomore RB Tony Tompkins continues his ascent, accounts for 302 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns as #13 Tulane trounces Vandy 42-17 | After slow start, Green Wave scores 21 unanswered points in the second half to surge through Commodores' upset bid | QB Allen remains hot, throws for 351 yards and 4 touchdowns versus Vandy's overwhelmed secondary | Wave will look to continue winning streak with #25 Auburn on-tap after a week 7 bye

New Orleans, LA -- Four seasons ago, then-#1 ranked Tulane led heavy underdog Vanderbilt by only four points with just minutes remaining in the third quarter before going on a 38-6 scoring run the rest of the way to come away with a 62-26 blowout victory in Nashville despite the slow start. Saturday night, history repeated itself once again as a late scoring binge helped #13 Tulane eventually turn a razor-thin 21-17 third quarter advantage into a 42-17 blowout victory at home. Green Wave QB Bryce Allen completed 22 of his 31 passes for 351 yards and 4 touchdowns, both season-highs, and sophomore RB Tony Tompkins accounted for 302 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns on the night, including two kickoff return scores as the Wave won its third straight game. Tompkins became the first Tulane player to return two kickoff returns for touchdowns in the same game since then-true freshman KR Joel Ryan returned a pair in 2018 at home versus Texas Tech, coincidentally in a game the Wave also won by a score of 42-17.

After a poor start to the 2023 season, junior QB Bryce Allen has now thrown for 8 touchdown passes and no interceptions during Tulane's three game winning streak.

Vanderbilt (1-4) was able to keep the game close through the game's first 2 1/2 quarters behind a strong running game and sound defensive play. Redshirt junior RB Nick Gorman's 65-yard touchdown run on an option pitch capped off a 4-play game opening drive for the Commodores and gave his team a lightning-quick 7-0 lead, stunning the Mercedes-Benz Superdome crowd. Gorman finished the game with a career-high 162 rushing yards and he certainly earned the respect of Tulane head coach D. Geezy.

"I thought Gorman was amazing tonight. Their coaching staff does a great job of getting the ball into their play-makers' hands and we knew they weren't going to come in here and just lay down for us," said the 14th year head coach after the game.

The Commodores' lead would be short-lived however.

On the ensuing kickoff, Tompkins began to work his magic. His 88-yard kickoff return for a touchdown quickly tied the game back up at 7-7 less than two minutes into the game.

The two teams would battle back and forth the rest of the first quarter and the first portion of the second quarter, trading punts and also each trading 45-yard field goal misses by their true freshman placekickers.

Following Vanderbilt PK Gemara Shelton's miss with under six minutes to go in the first half with the score tied at 7-7, the Green Wave offense would finally break through. Allen's 11-yard touchdown pass to redshirt senior WR Rashaad Hicks-Walker capped off a 6-play 72-yard drive and gave the Wave a 14-7 lead, their first lead of the game.

Vandy was able to answer right back when Shelton hit a 29-yard field goal to make the score 14-10 before half. The score would remain that way going into the break after the Green Wave turned the ball over on downs after failing to convert a 4th and 2 deep in Commodores' territory with seconds remaining in the first half. There was a smattering of boos from the crowd as the Green Wave exited the playing field for the halftime break, but the third quarter is when the switch finally came on for the 30+ point favorites.

Vanderbilt had no answer for sophomore RB Tony Tompkins as he finished the game with two kickoff return touchdowns and also added a third quarter touchdown reception.
Tompkins' 92-yard kickoff return touchdown to open up the second half was his second of the game and put his team ahead 21-10. The All-American return man from a season ago as a true freshman finished with 4 kick returns for 213 yards and 2 return touchdowns after returning only 1 for a touchdown all of last season. And he wasn't done contributing on the night.

After allowing Vanderbilt to drive down the field for another touchdown, this one on a scoring toss from QB Bobby Edmonds to WR Myron Jones to cut the Vandy deficit to 21-17, the Green Wave defense would put the clamps down and not allow another score the rest of the way.

"We made an adjustment and switched to playing exclusively in a 3-2-6 on them in the middle of the third quarter and they weren't ready for that," said Tulane defensive coordinator Steve Ellis.

"That's a look we've rarely shown this season and it helped contain their option attack that they had burned us on earlier when we were playing exclusively in nickel."

Tompkins' 14-yard touchdown reception from Allen increased his team's lead to 28-17 as the Green Wave began to finally pull away. Tompkins finished the night with 4 receptions for 56 yards along with 8 carries for 33 yards before sitting out most of the fourth quarter after the team made substitutions with the game out of hand.

Allen would throw two more touchdown passes the rest of the way. His 5-yard touchdown pass to TE Ronnie Parsons, who finished with a career-high 7 receptions for 103 yards, increased the Green Wave lead to 35-17 late in the third quarter.

Moments later, Allen's 18-yard touchdown toss to WR Brandon McIntyre, who finished with 4 receptions for 110 yards, made the score 42-17 with 6:39 remaining in the game before the team made mass substitutions with the game no longer in doubt.

"We got off to the slow start but sometimes it is like that in these SEC games, regardless of opponent," said Geezy.

"Vanderbilt is well-coached and they're going through some growing pains. We knew this wasn't going to be a "just show up" and blow them out sort of game and I was proud of how we responded to the early adversity."

The Green Wave (3-2) will travel to face #25 Auburn (4-1) in two weeks following a week 7 bye. Tulane, who has never lost to Auburn under Geezy, defeated the Tigers 35-7 last season at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

Sophomore TE Ronnie Parsons celebrates in following a late touchdown by his teammate, WR Brandon McIntyre. The former blue chip recruit finished Saturday night's game with a career-high 7 receptions for 103 yards and a touchdown.

QB Bryce Allen and company were all business as they exited the tunnel during pregame.

RB Nick Gorman was Vanderbilt's main sources of offense Saturday night as the junior speedster finished with 162 rushing yards including this 65-yard touchdown which gave his team an early 7-0 lead.

Sophomore RB Tony Tompkins continued to show us why he was an All-American return man last season as he returned two kickoffs for touchdowns, including this 88-yard return that tied the game up at 7-7.

Green Wave DT Mikeangelo Daniels finished the game with a career-high 2 sacks.

Tulane senior WR Rashaad Hicks-Walker fended off Vanderbilt SS Ben McKeon to get into the end zone on this 11-yard second quarter touchdown that gave the Green Wave its first lead of the day at 14-7.

Despite only being sacked twice, Vanderbilt QB Bobby Edmonds was hit several more times during the contest and was forced to exit the game late after being looked at by trainers.

Tulane fans applauded their team in the game's closing moments as they won't see them again for over a month with the Green Wave set to embark on a three-game road trip following their bye.

Tompkins+Allen=offensive explosion! Nice to see Allen continue his hot streak, and Tompkins as well. Hopefully you can carry the momentum into Auburn!

Brilliant offensive game from everyone riding the Wave. Wish I can have that kind of efficiency. I don't think I can go a game without throwing a pick!

I'm going through a bit of a road trip in my own dynasty; I hope both of us leave it relatively unscathed. Good luck against Auburn!
