To further explain I think it has to do with how terrible zone coverage is. They just stand in their zone until somebody enters it instead of scanning the field and predicting who will enter it and cover them.
Like say you got man to man on the outside with the MLB playing zone in the center. Its a double slant. #1 beat his corner and has a lane. Instead of seeing that and closing it the MLB will just stand there jogging in place like an idiot instead of attacking that hole before it enters his zone.
