Sleepless in Seattle : Arizona crushed 40-6 by Huskies

SEATTLE, WA -- The Wildcats came to this game having scored no less than 34 points in each of their previous victories of the season, while Washington had only reached over 30 points once, last week over FCS team Idaho State.

It didn't seem to bother the Huskies too much.

They exploded for 30 points in the first half only, en route to a 40-6 blowout of #24 Arizona, in front of a packed house at Husky Stadium. Senior quarterback Keith Price had a field day, amassing 436 yards through the air and two touchdowns, while senior safety Sean Parker picked off Arizona quarterback B.J. Denker twice in rapid succession including one he returned for a score early in the second quarter. Arizona standout running back Ka'deem Carey was nowehere to be seen during the game, gaining only 5 yards on 3 carries while adding a meager 16 more yards receiving.

"We watched lengths and lengths of tape this week, trying to see flaws in their game, flaws that we could exploit, but we never would've thought we'd get all these opportunities against them," coach Steve Sarkisian said after the game. "It just shows that when we're on our game, nothing can go wrong in our game plan. We stuck to the way we're playing, executed the plays well, and you can see the results. If we can keep this attitude and this kind of work for the remainder of the season, I believe we can achieve great things."

The Huskies hit the road next week as they'll be playing at Stanford, before coming back home on the 12th to face off against the Oregon Ducks.

Defensive linemen Andrew Hudson (93) and Josh Shirley (22) combine for a sack on Stanford quarterback Kevin Hogan

#1 Stanford hits hurdle at home, loses 33-8 to Washington

STANFORD, CA -- Stanford's stay in the top spot was short-lived, as they suffered a 33-8 loss to the Washington Huskies only a week after topping the polls. The Huskies defense was stingy, allowing the Cardinal only 245 total yards and holding them scoreless until the start of the fourth quarter, when senior running back Anthony Wilkerson scored on a 4 yard run, reducing the then-deficit to 23-8.

It would be the only time the home fans could celebrate though, as the Huskies took control of the game until then, scoring 23 points on two touchdowns by senior quarterback Keith Price, one through the air to second-string running back Dwayne Washington and one himself on the ground, as well as three field goal kick by senior kicker Travis Coons, who finished the game with a perfect 4-on-4.

Stanford quarterback Kevin Hogan will want to forget his Saturday, gaining only 99 yards over the air and being intercepted once, as well as fumbling the ball on another occasion that gave the ball back to the Huskies in the second quarter. "I'll echo my comments from last week, when we're on our game, there's pretty much nothing that can go wrong for us," said coach Sarkisian. "We showed it again this week, coming here to face the #1 ranked team in the country and completely dominate them."

The Huskies are back home this week as they'll host the Oregon Ducks at Husky Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm Pacific Time.

Utter disappointment for quarterback Keith Price, despite a 337 passing yards performance

Game-ending tackle hands a 37-31 win to the #12 Ducks in rivalry game

SEATTLE, WA -- A strange decision at the end of the Huskies final drive handed Oregon the win, despite Washington coming off two big wins over ranked opponents in the weeks prior. On a 4th-and-Inches at the Oregon 47-yard line, the Washington coaching staff curiously went with a fake handoff to fullback Cooper Pelluer, before quarterback Keith Price pitched the ball back and outside to halfback Bishop Sankey. Sankey, though, was quickly chased and tackled for a loss and the turnover that ultimately gave Oregon the win. "Bishop had a good game up until then", coach Sarkisian said, "and I honestly believed he could gain the first down on the play. I made a mistake, and that cost us the game and likely a spot in the top 25."

The story of the game though, was the performance of Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota, who went a relatively quiet 16-for-24 and 113 yards passing with a touchdown, but burst through the Huskies' defense on the ground, amassing 200 yards on 29 carries and scoring twice, while keeping the ball on the ground during his team's last drive to seal the game for the Ducks. His counterpart for Washington, quarterback Keith Price, didn't slack off either during the game, going 32/48 and gaining 337 yards through the air, passing for one touchdown and being intercepted once.

"Granted we beat Stanford last time, but I have the feeling we played a good game this week too", coach Sarkisian added. "They simply were better prepared than we were, something which we're going to address right away to prepare for our next game, as we'll be on the road to Arizona State."

The Huskies will travel to Arizona State next week, before coming back home the week after to face the struggling California Golden Bears, who have not yet won this season, losing their latest game 59-24 against arch-rivals UCLA.

                          From the Sideline : A Redshirt’s POV

Halfway through the season, and our Huskies are sitting in second place in the Pac-12 North, behind Oregon who inflicted Washington their first conference loss in the last game. Our featured columnist today is redshirt freshman quarterback Tommy Jacobs, who will give us a glimpse of the life of a football redshirt.

It actually starts with the worst part. You get summoned to meet with the coach, expecting him to tell you you played great, but that they’ll be giving the nod to the established senior for the upcoming season and that the coaching staff is expecting you to sit behind and learn from the guy. At least that’s what you tell yourself. Basically, every football player wants to play right away, so meeting the coach and listening to him tell you that he wants you to redshirt for the season, that’s hard to take. Especially after playing a fantastic last high school season, being benched for the whole season isn’t what you’re looking for when you’re starting your college football career.

But after that it gets smoothed out a little. You still get to practice with the team, mostly on the scout team, to help prepare the guys for the next game. I didn’t have much trouble bonding with the older guys, and I’m learning a lot from Keith (Price), he’s teaching me a lot as far as being the man in charge on the field, as well as having a great off-field attitude. Having a guy that redshirted his first year also helps a lot to understand how it all works. Of course I’m disappointed that I won’t play this season, but putting everything in perspective, it’ll most likely be a lot more helpful to skip this season and learn the whole system without having to worry about the actual game. That way I’ll have the right reflexes when I get into the real action.

There’s also another upside about redshirting, one that I’m very appreciative of. Not going to the road games actually allows me more time to study, and that will help me lighten up the load when I finally get in on the football action. My Engineering studies take up a good part of my time, and since I’m not as often on the field as most of the other guys, I can put up more time on my studies and take some extra classes when I can, so I’ll have less things to worry about when I’ll add college football games to my schedule.

I’m always in communication with the coaching staff, Coaches (Steve) Sarkisian and (Eric) Kiesau mostly, so I know what they’re seeing in me and I try to continue to live up to what they expect of me. That’s the only way I can get them to continue considering me as a potential starter down the line, for the upcoming seasons. I already know there’s going to be a competition next season for the starting quarterback job, as Keith is going to graduate and hopefully get drafted, so I’m working hard to be as ready as I can for that, and I know that Cyler (Miles) and Jeff (Lindquist) are looking forward to that as well, and they’ll be ready for it. I can’t wait for a chance next season, I’ll have to take my shot.

Hi guys, I know it's been a (long) while since I posted here in Tommy's thread, but I can assure you it's still alive. I simply had that thing called real life happen in the meantime, and had virtually no time for Tommy's story.

I've got all the files I need though, and even though the last game wasn't saved properly, I simulated it and it came down to roughly the same result, with some minor changes. The Pac-12 standings will look the same, and though I didn't check the overall NCAA standings of all the conferences, I'll still be continuing with the report, so the Top 25 might be a little weird after Washington's next game, but I'll disregard that and move on.

As was stated in the opening post on page 1, don't expect this to go on really fast, as my gaming time is quite limited. As soon as I'll be able to post things, I'll do it, and when I can't play the games, I'll try to chime in with bits and pieces of Tommy's life on campus and things around it, as well as answering your questions and comments, if there are any.

Washington QB Keith Price is cheered by his teammates after record-breaking performance

Overtime thriller ends in record performance for Price

TEMPE, AZ -- No one could predict this game would be as thrilling as it was after the first quarter came to an end. The Huskies needed triple overtime to finally come out on top of the Arizona State Sun Devils, even though they started the game strong, as they were leading 21-0 at the end of the first quarter. A record performance by senior quarterback Keith Price ultimately ended the Sun Devils' hopes of winning, as he went an incredible 42-for-57 with 465 yards and 5 touchdown passes, surpassing the Huskies' single-game record of 455 yards set by Cody Pickett back in 2001.

The Huskies had a great opening, scoring on each of their three first possessions, and stopping the Sun Devils in their tracks on just about every play they threw their way. Arizona State began their comeback just before halftime, and continued to play inspired football all the way until the end of regulation, outscoring Washington in each quarter after the first.

"We started very well, in fact one of our best starts all season," coach Sarkisian said after the match, "but I'm disappointed that the kids didn't keep their concentration high for the rest of the game. The mental aspect of the football game is what allowed ASU to come back, and that's something that we'll have to work on during next week. Fortunately, they were able to elevate their game enough to come back home with the win, but not all teams will give us the same opportunity."

The 5-2 Huskies will host California (0-7) next week, who are winless this season, coming off a 34-21 defeat against divisional foe Oregon State. Injuries to key players have made this season one to forget for the Golden Bears, but Coach Sarkisian has to make sure his players don't get jumped by a supposedly inferior opponent.
