I'll try to say this without typing a giant post, but I just want a more true to life representation of the sport. A game that makes us laugh at how ridiculous something like UFC 2 was in comparison. Where you're focused on landing one strike rather than spamming combos to be robo-parried. Give us STRATEGY. Actually make this game feel like a chess match of sorts.
Stamina and momentum need to be a thing. The stamina system in UFC 2 is absurd. Momentum is also ridiculous, as every fighter is automatically the same weight and strength. You can perform a takedown at practically any point of the fight. You can block a takedown with a simple flick of a stick. Those animations are terribly unrealistic. There should be a battle for a takedown, and if someone comes into you and you block it, there should be a battle there in the clinch.
Need to do better with the damage system too, but that's also a striking issue which we all know needs a full on re-tooling. What I mean is when you get rocked but not KO'd, there needs to be more of an impact from that. Your stamina should be cut in half for a while, your movements should be more sluggish, the "health event" basically needs to be a lot more fleshed out than the fighter staggering backwards briefly (while always staggering perfectly away from you). More KO animations would be great, as well as TKO animations where the ref actually does something to justify their appearance in the game.
As for fighters, I don't care about how many people you can fit into one roster. You can cut out probably like 20% of this past year's roster, as they really aren't needed in the game. No we don't need Bruce Lee or Mike Tyson or a number of the legend fighters they put in. Make that stuff DLC and worry about it after the release. Instead of trying to get the most fighters possible in the game, how about you focus on every fighter actually being their own fighter? I know that's going to involve way too much work, or so they'd say, but that's why UFC 2 plays so soulless. Everyone is the same on the ground. Everyone is the same on the feet. Ratings matter a LITTLE BIT, but not really. This is more than just a ratings issue though, this is animations to support one fighter being different from another. Think of it as playing a class-based game, lots of games do this now because that's exactly what the audience wants, the freedom to play as something different from one character to another.
Content-wise, I'm all for a Universe mode over Career mode. Especially with such a pointless career mode as UFC 2. A much deeper CAF would be appreciated, too. If you're going to stick with the pre-set formulas, then you need A LOT more pre-sets. Otherwise, there needs to be body-morphing (this would be much better). Along with more hairstyles, tattoos, etc.. And how about an actual names database? You can't even give your fighters a first name to be announced for god's sake. More names, more ways to personalize your CAFs with entrances, pre-fight rituals, post-fight rituals, etc..
Basically, think of UFC 2 as an inaccurate blueprint of the game you want to make, and now you have to build A LOT while adapting from that blueprint if you want to make a truly good game. The only thing I'd give UFC 2 that it did very well compared to other franchises is graphics.
