SimWorld Presents: "Reaching for Greatness" The Prologue

The Warriors have kept up their dominance up to this point just as expected. Since the All Star break they have lost only three games (2 ironically at home), a loss in a back-to-back in Atlanta, a heart-wrenching loss to the โ€œDub-stoppingโ€ Bucks & a fluke loss to Sacramento in Oracle. Aside from those three losses, the Warriors have seemed to find their stride with Durant in the mix and have seemed to have calmed Darymondโ€™s early season antics. Curry and Durant have taken center stage & the Dubs have looked pretty much unstoppable with multiple convincing wins over Houston, San Antonio & OKC since the break. The only team to give them a true battle was oce again Memphis who they still managed to edge out in a nail-bitter.

The Rockets have gone 14-4 since the break (including an 8-game win streak) and the addition of Lou Williams seems to be a perfect fit coming off of the bench for Dโ€™Antoni. When Harden missed 8 games with his foot injury Lou stepped right in and he has provided the Rockets no only another 3 point weapon but another shot creator. Houston currently sits in 3rd in the West just a half game behind San Antonio.

Utah is continuing to shock the hell out of everyone. Currently riding a 7-game winning streak and losing only 5 games since the break; the Jazz finally look healthy and are gathering some chemistry. Their defense continues to be the fire in their engine but their offense has really taken strides over the past month with everyone healthy. The Jazz are getting solid contributions from 1 through 12 on the team and look poised to make a run past the 1st round if they remain in the 4/5 seed.

After the smoke cleared from the trade-deadline many still feel as if Doc Rivers and company should have made a move. Although the Clips have gone 14-7 since ASW, they have still looked lethargic at times. Paul is back but still does not look 100% & they picked up Matt Barnes off of waivers but they are still lacking defensive continuity and outside of Paul & Blake they canโ€™t manage to find any consistent offense.

Russell Westbrook and company are starting to gel. Up until a few weeks ago the Thunder were being spearheaded as the one-man-Russ-Show. Then OKC made a much unheralded move to get Taj Gibson & Doug McDermott from Chicago. Their integration took a little time and saw a small step backward upon Kanterโ€™s return from injury but the Thunder have won 9 of their last 10 with that one loss being to (go figure) Golden State. Russell has continued to play out of his mind but Gibson & McDermott have given more outlets and Robersonโ€™s move to the bench has given the Thunder depth. These last couple of weeks will be crucial to their seeding and post-season potential.

      THE REST:

The Pelicans have seen incredible individual scoring performances from their new duo (46, 38, 41 from Davis & 59, 40, 38 from Cousins) but have not gotten enough from anyone else to gain anything more than 5 wins since All Star. Portland who many expected to make a move after ASW has been terribly inconsistent and have battled injuries outside of Lillard & McCollum. San Antonio has limped into this portion of the season going a pedestrian 11-8 since the break with Gasol, Parker & Kawhi all missing some time. Memphis has played .500 ball but nothing spectacular. The Nuggets have been slumping and are currently hanging on to the 8th seed by a thread. The Buddy Hield project has gone nowhere in Sac as Buddy has been injured & Noel has been a bright spot for the future in Dallas despite Dallasโ€™ losing ways.

Cleveland who at one point seemed on a collision course with the Warriors for 3rd straight year have gone only 11-8 since ASW. Granted that they are just getting back Love, they have struggled mightily on the defensive side of the ball even with the addition of Larry Sanders. Scoring has been a non-issue with Cleveland putting up 100+ in all but 2 games since ASW but in lieu of the added scoring punch in the addition of Deron Williams and return of Love & J.R. Smith; the Cavs have only a couple of weeks to shore up their defensive woes as there a few teams on their heels.

Hotlantaโ€ฆ The Hawks are the hottest team in the NBA right now (aside from Golden State). Despite last nightโ€™s debilitating loss t home to the Sixers, the Hawks have lost only three games since the break and have huge wins over San Antonio, Cleveland, Boston & Golden State all in the past few weeks. Sparked by ferocious defense and everyone stepping up through injuries have lead to the Hawks sitting in 2nd place in the East. With Dwight Howard & Bazmore out for the next few days, it may be tough for the Hawks to keep up the pace.

Considered to have had the best trade acquisitions this year, the Raptors started off the their post-All Star season by winning 7 straight and recently 6 of their last 8. DeRozan & Lowry continue to be the catalysts but Ibaka has been exactly what they have needed in terms of space creation and rim protection. P.J. Tuckerโ€™s impact is yet to have been felt as he played only 4 games before fracturing his foot. He is expected to return just prior to the playoffs.

The Celtics looked to be on the verge of a meltdown post-All Star & the rumor mill was in full force as the Celtics lost 8 of the first 9 after the break including a 5-game losing streak right off the bat. Isaiah played poorly & the jeers were in full force for Ainge and his reluctance to nab Jimmy Butler or Paul George. Well since then the Cโ€™s & Isaiah Thomas have responded to the tune of 9 wins in their last 10 games including an 8 game win streak.

It seems that All Star weekend is the worst thing that could have happened to the Wizards. They have looked asleep at the wheel since the break enduring an 8 game skid right out of the break and only winning 4 games since mid-February. Bogdonovic seems to have left his jumper in Brooklyn and there are rumors of infighting between Beal & Wall once again. The Wiz are currently sitting at .500 which is good for a 7/8 seed in the East at the moment. With the Pacers just out of reach, the Wizards could find themselves on the outside looking in if they donโ€™t right the ship.

      THE REST:

The Bulls have looked just as we thought they would (lackluster) after giving up Gibson & McDermott leaving behind a heap of non-cohesiveness. The Pacersโ€™ have fallen apart. Losers of 11 straight; their front office & locker room is about to explode according to reports around the league. Milwaukee has found their stride without Jabari Parker and Middleton is returning to form; seeing the Bucks currently in the 5th seed. The Pistons are somehow managing to maintain playoff presence despite Jackson & Van Gundy still being at odds. The New York circus has calmed down and so has any aspirations of a playoff birth & the Sixers will not see their project completed until next season as Ben Simmons will not see action until then.

        Of Princes and Posers

Which teams we can expect to see on primetime TV in May and June

        by AdamJones, April 1st, 2017

As the great (or, perhaps more accurately, the angry) Bobby Knight said, "You don't play against opponents, you play against the game of basketball." There is truth to that statement. The NBA sets divisions, conferences, schedules, and schedule rules; the teams play each other according to the schedule generated by computer. Innovatorsโ€”people who can figure out a new way to beat the systemโ€”are hailed as champions of a new era of the game. Each team determines its style of play and the players it wants. One goal, of course, is the same throughout the league, and its truth is a strange mixture of Bobby Knight and George Carlin: everyone wants to go home, finish playing, happy, and the only way to do that is to win the last game of the year.

Some teams are better at that then others. It is not for me, in this immediate space, to tell you which team will win it all, or which players from said team will emerge shirtless for days on end afterwards. It is upon me, as Milton would have said, were he a fan, or alive, to explain why a few select teams will come closer to that end goal than the majority. And in doing that I must return to the all-important way to defeat the game of basketball: build a team identity and live it every day and night.

There are certain team identities that are pervasive throughout the NBA, depending in part upon the times. The Pelicans' newfound duo of Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousins would, in any other era, lead New Orleans immediately into contention. Yet as we know, this is not so today. The Pelicans sit at 31-45,with 6 games remaining to catch up their 4.5-game deficit to the Nuggets (that they are still mathematically in contention with a winning percentage of .408 is due only to the atrocity of the bottom half of the West this season). Davis is leading the league in points per game with 29.7, and is adding a hefty 12.2 rebounds and over 3 blocks per contest to post what would, in a season with the Pelicans in contention, be MVP-worthy numbers. Cousins, ailed by ankle issues and time in Sacramentoโ€”the latter being worse, by farโ€”is still averaging 25.7 points, 12.1 rebounds, and 4.3 assists (the latter good for third best on the team) per game. The acquisition of Cousins has determined the near future of basketball in the Bayou (pending Cousins' decision in free agency, where the Pels are confident in his return). Big man basketball it is, and that identity will do the team a world of good next season.

If New Orleans is rightfully struggling to contend in a cutthroat Southwest Division, it is a completely different story in the Pacificโ€”the Kings, who appear weaker than Louis XVI in 1791, and the Warriors, who are stronger than Louis XIV ever was. The Kings have floundered in mediocrity and a lack of self-awareness for ages now, it seems. Trading Boogie away was a big step... but towards what, it remains to be seen. The only identity the Kings have shown of late is a one of uncertainty and acquiring young shooting guards (Stauskas, McLemore, Hield, etc). And so rightfully they sit at 29-47, 5-8 in a division with two of the few teams worse than they are, the Lakers and the Suns. Far away at the top of the division is Golden Stateโ€”63-13, 119.3 points per game, three of the best shootersโ€”nay, playersโ€”in the game, in Curry, Thompson, and Durant. The addition of Durant has been, of course, terrific. He is an MVP candidate with 27.9 points and 9.1 rebounds per game. Most importantly, he has not sullied the Warriors' chemistry and identity in any way (it is foolish to think that he has, solely on the basis of the Warriors' slightly worse record this season). While Sacramento has relied upon the unreliable Rudy Gay, the Warriors have somehow improved on what was already a championship-winning offensive identity.

It is easy to discuss, say, the underrated, defensive identity of the Grizzlies, who took it from the Spurs, whose identity is now merely that they are the Spurs. It is easyโ€”or even fun, if you are a Celtics or Clippers fanโ€”to discuss the identity of the Lakers: how it was Kobe Bryant, until it wasn't, and then the rug was pulled out from under them. It is more difficult, however, to explain how the Hawks acquired their defensive identity. One solution is to point to Mike Budenholzer, coming from the Pop coaching tree. One cannot, however, point to the draft (often the foundation of a team's identity) to explain Atlanta's revival. The only noteworthy first-round pick since 2012 is Dennis Schroeder (who is acquitting himself nicely, leading the team in points and assists per game). It is remarkable that the Hawks have built themselves through free agencyโ€”Millsap, Howard, Bazemore, Hardaway, Ilyasova, Sefalosha, and more all played elsewhere firstโ€”in an era where most free agents, LeBron and KD notwithstanding, rarely change a team much for the better, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Yet despite that, the Hawks have held teams below 100 points per game in each of the last 3 seasons (all but the year under Budenholzer). This year, they have allowed a miserly, league-leading 93.3, which has propelled them to 47-28, best in the Southeast (which, to be fair, is hardly the best division in basketball). Scoring is a problem: 96.9 points per game will not see Atlanta into June. But they have somehow, someway, found a terrific defensive identity, and that has taken them to greater heights than anyone would have thought possible.

Identity is everything in June. A poor-shooting team cannot rely upon a sudden proliferation of three-pointers if their defense fails; in the playoffs, there is so little room for error. Those teams that have built an identity are the ones who will remain with something to play for; those who have not will most likely get in a lot of TV time in May. Which identity is strongest remains to be seen, as it varies from year to year, from LeBron to incredible offense to (as often happens, it seems) the rock that is the Spurs. Teams must stay true to their strengths and true to themselves. Only then will they defeat the game.

David Aldridge reports that the Clippers, Cleveland, Chicago & Boston have all made pitches to Andrew Bogutโ€™s agent since being waived by the Dallas Mavericks. Bogut is expected to decide tomorrow.

The Memphis Grizzlies have signed F Terrence Jones to a 1-year deal. Joerger has said that Jones will take the injured Jamychal Greenโ€™s place in the starting lineup.

Coach Popovich, true to form says he is not concerned with playoff seeding when asked about him sitting his starters over the past few weeks. โ€œI gotta rest my guys. Making the playoffs doesnโ€™t mean much if you donโ€™t win once youโ€™re in does it?โ€

Andray Blatche makes his return to the NBA as the Portland Trail Blazers have signed him to a 1-yr deal in attempt to fill their void at center and make a run at the 8th seed with Nurkic out. They waived G Pat Connaughton to make room.

Rumor has it that the Brooklyn Nets are close to relieving head coach Kenny Atkinson of his coaching duties. The Nets have struggled mightily this season and Nets owner is said to have ties to former Cavs coach David Blatt.

The Lakers waive veteran PG Jose Calderon. Calderon would have to sign with a team by the 7th to be allowed a spot on a playoff roster.

Sam Presti says that he would like to sign a PG for insurance before the 7th. The Thunder have clinched a playoff birth but will most likely face either Golden State in the first round, each of which gave Westbrrok fits by loading up on him.

                        Brooklyn State of Mind

                        The historically pitiful Nets

                        by CaptainEsteban, April 1st, 2017

Long since thought of as the number 1 city of New York, Brooklyn is the most prestigious second best city in the country. What was once Section-8 housing lining the streets have now turned into million dollar Brownstones and flourishing businesses. With the next generation coming of age, so does the next line of entertainers, poets, and writers who's aesthetic tastes are molded by their surroundings and experiences of growing up in Brooklyn. The city is progressing, exorcising it's outdated values and replacing them with more forward thinking ones. It's the city that birthed Jay-Z, Eddie Murphy, and THE Michael Jordan. The city that's synonymous with grit, success, and willpower. The city that houses thousands of new immigrants in search of economic prosperity and urban culturalization. The city that invented hip-hop(nay-sayers please take a seat). And unfortunately for it, the city that bares the stain that is the Brooklyn Nets.

What was once sold as the "new" pride of Brooklyn, the Nets have had an overwhelmingly garbage introductory half-decade. They've literally have a downward trend in it's five years in New York, boasting an impressive 167-236 records in it's inaugural five seasons with 3 playoff appearances and 3 playoff early round exits. The pulse of the city seems rather indifferent. A more 'wait and see' approach has been taken where Brooklynites won't officially adopt the team, but it also won't officially denounce them. Losing seasons in todays NBA aren't entirely bad, what with lottery balls being coveted currency and awful records as a means to acquire them, so not terrible. Nets fans can rest easy at night knowing that their suffering will be rewarded with a shiny new prospect in the upcoming draft. Oh...

The trade deadline came and went, and with it came Andrew Nicholson and the Wizards 2017 first rounder and went Bojan Bogdanovich . A good deal for what its worth. Another pick in the twenties in a draft that shows some late round promise. What surprised many, however, is GM Sean Marks' continued support of Brook Lopez, the longest tenured Net on the roster. The seven footers done his job, posting a consistent 20.1/PPG, 7.5/RPG with 1.7/BPG and an always welcome 2.4/APG. A bonafide starting caliber center on a playoff level team, and not many teams can say the same. Could Marks have taken advantage of Larry Bird's, the Pacers GM, situation with Paul George's looming free agency and potentially the superstars unhappiness with the roster as presently constructed? Future picks and maybe a young talent(say.. Glenn Robinson III?) could've been exchanged for Brook, but hey, i'm just a writer.

Much to Jarrett Jack's delight, the $36 million dollar Jeremy Lin experiment hasn't reaped the benefits the franchise had initially hoped. His inconsistent play along with his inability to stay on the court has led to lackluster performances and headaches for Brooklyn supporters everywhere. He sits third in scoring behind second year D-League product Sean Kilpatrick(or Ghost) at 14.0/PPG, 5.6/APG, a surprising 2.1/SPG and an always welcome 4.1/RPG. His numbers would be impressive for a first or second year point guard, but for the $36 million dollar man, his unimpressive days in Brooklyn may come to an end sooner than he might think.

                        Is there hope for Brooklyn?

No. Well, yes. Okay, no and yes. Close your eyes, Brooklynites, because this is about to get depressing. Brooklyn holds the rights to NONE of it's next two first round picks. With the play of young studs Ekpe Okocha, Derwin Amani Blackshear, Brennan O'Kieffer and Keyon Dawkins, this franchise is in perfect position to watch the Celtics(or whomever Danny Ainge gives that right to) draft and develop franchise level players thanks to the, dare I say, ineptitude of Billy King.

But there's hope, yet. With Brooklyn native Isaiah Whitehead 5.0/PPG and 5.5/APG(a whole 0.1 and 30 millions less than starter Lin), maybe this franchise found a solid NBA player in the second round? 27 year-old Sean Kilpatrick is a productive third or fourth option on a good team, but Brooklyn may have missed the sail on him a couple years too late unless they can get good soon. Cap space is aplenty in this franchise, and maybe a free agent might take a flier on the franchise if they could pair him up with two or three valuable pick ups in the future(Chris Paul, Gordon Hayward anyone?). Best of all, Mikhail Prokhorov just might have had enough fun ruining this team and might sell it to fund a potential adult-themed business. Who knows with that guy.

Fret not, Brooklynites. You might not have the Nets to help power you through the sweltering summers and unforgiving winters in New York, but at least you have 30 miles of ocean shore that you can walk to forget about the absolute embarrassment for years to come that is the Brooklyn Nets. Take it away Charlamagne.

THE BOSTON CELTICS HAVE OFFICIALLY SIGNED ANDREW BOGUT TO A ONE YEAR CONTRACT. THE CELTICS ARE HOPING THAT BOGUT WILL HELP SHORE UP SOME OF THEIR RIM PROTECTION CONCERNS HEADING INTO THE POSTSEASON.
