Game 11, Year 14 (2023 season): Ole Miss Rebels at #7 Tulane Green Wave

    NR 38 -- 5-6 (2-6)
    #7 42 -- 9-2 (8-0)

Down 38-35 and facing a 3rd and 19 from the Rebels' 28-yard line, QB Obi Clemons' desperation heave into the end zone was deflected by Ole Miss CB Bobby Motley before WR Jason Mason hauled it in while keeping his feet in-bounds for the game-winning touchdown. The circus catch gave Tulane its first lead of the game with only 0:09 remaining in the contest.

Senior RB Tim Powers goes off on Senior Night for 267 yards and two scores as #7 Tulane knocks off Ole Miss in 42-38 comeback thriller | After trailing 38-14 at halftime, QB Clemons' improbable touchdown pass to WR Mason with 0:09 remaining caps off Green Wave's third straight come-from-behind-win | Rebels' misfortune in close games this season continues with yet another heartbreaking loss | Wave now sets their sights on date at rival Southern Miss in Hattiesburg where they have not won since 2017

New Orleans, LA -- Last season on Senior Night, Tulane got a career-high 287-yard rushing performance by then-senior RB Buck Johnson III on its way to erasing a 23-0 deficit to win 30-26 over Southern Miss, which was the largest comeback ever for the Green Wave under head coach D. Geezy. Thursday night, history repeated itself once again on Senior Night as the Wave rallied back from a 38-14 halftime deficit, getting a huge rushing performance out of senior RB Tim Powers along with a ridiculous acrobatic catch by WR Jason Mason in the game's closing seconds to defeat Ole Miss 42-38 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, eclipsing Geezy's team's previous largest comeback by 1-point.

Ole Miss RB J.T. Higgins' 63-yard touchdown run on the game's opening possession began what was a long first half for the Tulane defense.

Ole Miss (5-6) was able to amass a large first quarter lead through a mix of power-running along with big plays by its defense. RB J.T. Higgins' 63-yard touchdown run capped off a quick 5-play 82-yard drive to open the game and gave the Rebels an early 7-0 lead. Higgins finished the game with 108 rushing yards on only 8 carries.

After a quick three and out by the Green Wave offense, Ole Miss was able to quickly come back again with a methodical 10-play drive which concluded with a 5-yard touchdown run by senior RB Chris McDonald that increased the Rebels' lead to 14-0.

It wasn't long after that when Tulane QB Obi Clemons' pass on the Wave's next drive was picked off by Ole Miss FS Jon Harrison and the redshirt senior returned the pick 33 yards for another score, giving the Rebels a lightning-quick 21-0 lead to start the game.

Fortunately for Tulane, they finally caught a break after Harrison's pick-six, getting on the scoreboard via RB/KR Tony Tompkins' 94-yard return touchdown on the ensuing kickoff. Tompkins' sixth career return touchdown (4 kickoff returns + 2 punt returns) made the score 21-7 and seemingly put the Wave back in the game.

    Not so fast my friend.

Behind the passing of QB David Green, who threw for a whopping career-low 6 yards in last season's 59-7 loss to the Green Wave in Oxford, the Rebels were able to increase their lead. After his team's defense allowed Clemons to complete an 8-yard touchdown pass to WR Lionel Parks to make the score 24-14, cutting into the Ole Miss lead, Green got to work.

His 92-yard touchdown pass to WR Jasper Adams made the score 31-14. Then, after Rebels CB Matt Nugent got his defense its second interception off Clemons in the first half, Green's 17-yard touchdown pass on a corner route to FB Alan Porter at the back of the end zone increased the lead to 38-14 going into halftime. Green finished the first half 14 of 17 for 213 yards to go along with the 2 touchdowns and no interceptions, a stark contrast to last season's disastrous performance versus the Wave.

On the other end of the spectrum, Clemons finished the first half just 4 of 11 for 46 yards to go along with 1 touchdowns and 2 interceptions, a much less efficient performance than his 4 touchdown, no interception outing in last week's 41-24 win at Arkansas, a game they trailed 24-10 at halftime and later came back to win, just as they had the week before in a 27-24 win at home versus Alabama- ironically, those comeback wins provided a glimpse of what was to come in the second half.

A 12-play 77-yard march that lasted 4:13 to start the third quarter ended with a 5-yard touchdown run by Powers to cut the Wave's deficit to 38-21. Then, after getting a quick three and out by Ole Miss on its next drive, Powers' bulldozing 66-yard touchdown run in which he broke through the grasp of two defenders quickly cut his team's deficit to 10, making the score 38-28 with 2:31 to go in the third quarter. Powers finished the game with a career-high 267 rushing yards on 26 carries.

RB Tim Powers somehow broke through two tackles before accelerating to the end zone on this emphatic 66-yard touchdown run that put Tulane back in the game late in the third quarter.

"We went into the halftime locker room and decided that we were having some issues with our passing game but Tim was averaging somewhere in the neighborhood of 8 yards per carry when we did decide to run the ball," said Tulane offensive coordinator Curtis Byrd.

"We knew we couldn't come back all on one drive and didn't want to go pass-heavy. So, even though we were down big, we decided we still had enough time to go with a ball-control offense and we ended up only passing the ball 7 times in the second half while rushing the ball with a ton of success."

    And that they did.

Later, a 10-play 54-yard march which featured all runs lasted 3:29 and ended up with 3-yard touchdown on an option pitch from Clemons to Tompkins. Tompkins' second touchdown of the game made the score 38-35 with 6:40 remaining to play.

With his team trailing 38-35 late in the fourth quarter, junior FS LeCharles Smith Jr. intercepted QB David Green's pass on 3rd and goal to keep the Green Wave's hopes alive.
The Rebels have lost multiple close games this season - most notably a 24-17 defeat at the hands of Alabama at Oxford back in week 8 along with a 24-21 week 6 loss at current-#2 ranked Florida. In fact, Ole Miss has not lost by more than a touchdown all season long. With that in mind, they were determined to not let yet another game slip out of their grasp.

Following Tompkins' score, Green would direct a 10-play drive that penetrated all the way down to the Tulane 2-yard line with under four minutes to play, putting his team in position to put the game away. However, facing a 2nd and goal from the 2-yard line, Green's attempt to hit RB J.T. Higgins would end up in disaster as Green Wave junior FS LeCharles Smith Jr. picked off the errant pass near the goal line, and his first interception this season gave his team back possession of the football at the 4-yard line with 3:30 remaining to play down by three.

"They had completed 2 or 3 of those types of flare-out passes to the running back earlier in the game and we told our guys to be on the lookout and Smith just made a play," said Wave defensive coordinator Steve Ellis.

Tulane, trailing 38-35, now needed a big drive to complete its comeback. Despite little time remaining, they stayed true to what got them in position to win - the legs of Powers. The Wave would go on a 13-play 96-yard march that featured 10 runs and drained almost the entire clock, moving the football to the Ole Miss red zone with seconds remaining. After a holding penalty backed them up to the Rebels 28-yard line, the Wave faced a 3rd and 19 with 0:15 to go and were out of timeouts.

With the thought in mind that the game would essentially end if a Wave player was tackled in-bounds, Geezy decided to go for the win. Clemons took a snap from shotgun and heaved the ball to Mason at the back of the end zone despite the fact that he was well-covered by CB Bobby Motley. Motley would tip the ball away, however with an amazing display of concentration, Mason was able to corral the pass off of the deflection while also keeping his feet in-bounds at the back boundary-line of the end zone for the touchdown. The circus catch gave Tulane its first lead of the game at 42-38 with just 0:09 to go, completing the 24-point comeback, its largest under Geezy during his 14-season tenure.

Ole Miss would have one last opportunity, but Green's desperation heave from his own 20-yard line was batted down on the game's final play, sending the Rebels home losers of yet another close game.

"I have to give a lot of credit to a lot of guys that stepped up, first and foremost, the defense," said Geezy, whose team held Green to just 60 passing yards and completely shut down the Rebels offense in the second half.

"Secondly, I can't say enough about Powers and the job that he did. He really put this team on his back. You also have to give a lot of credit to the hog-mollies up front for opening up rushing lanes consistently. We never punted in the second half and literally had four possession that went for four touchdowns. And how about that gutsy throw by Obi at the end?

"This was just a tremendous team win and anytime you can come back from down big, it makes it that much sweeter."

Tulane (9-2) will travel next week to face Southern Miss (9-2) at Hattiesburg in their annual "Battle for the Bell" rivalry game. The Green Wave has not won at M. M. Roberts Stadium since 2017, having dropped each of their last two contests versus their rivals on the road. The Green Wave lost 35-28 two seasons ago at USM, and in 2019, they dropped a 42-35 decision, both games played in rainy conditions.

Re: Coach Geezy in the Big Easy: Our City, Our Team | Part II - The Golden Age of Tul

What a comeback and even greater way to cap it off. When I read it I was reminded of my first days as a dynasty reporter in my first Michigan dynasty, when I threw up a prayer against Notre Dame to win the game. The context is different (I was unranked and they were in the Top 10) but I'm sure you were jumping out of your seat as well when Mason caught the ball. That's one reason to love college football.

Powers is an absolute beast. His equipment kinda reminds me of an RB from the 80s-90s. Walter Payton perhaps? If so, it fits the bill on how he's been playing.

Good to see Michigan knock off Ohio State and stay alive; If you get in it's looking more and more like they're going to be your opponent.

Any specific uniform combos against USM? Maybe a never-before-seen combo? Can't wait!

You're absolutely right man. This was one of those "jump out your seat," "beat your chest moments." When Mason caught that pass, there was like a 2-3 second pause before the touchdown graphic displayed. I didn't even think he was in-bounds, but sure enough, the replay showed he had a foot in. What a thrilling way to win.

With Powers, I was going for a little bit of Ricky Williams with a little bit of Walter Payton for his look. The equipment definitely fits his game well and it was the feel I was going for; glad someone actually was able to notice something like that.

Sadly, I think our chances of going to the national title game are slim to none at this point. There are too many undefeated teams ahead of us and it would take a minor miracle for those teams to lose. I guess there is still a chance that the BCS gods give us a big boost should we beat Florida in the conference championship game, but for now my only focus is at least getting into a BCS bowl.

McIntyre, who has not played since week 9, returned to practice this week.

Tulane | WR McIntyre practices, set to return
            Wed, 22 Nov 2023 09:10:06 -0700

            report courtesy Dianna Russini, ESPN.com

Dianna Russini of ESPN.com reports that Tulane junior WR Brandon McIntyre (90 ovr) has returned to practice and will play in Saturday's game versus Southern Miss, although in a limited capacity, after missing the Green Wave's last four contests with an abdominal injury. McIntyre, who was hurt in the team's 33-32 win at Tennessee earlier this season, will be on a "pitch-count" and will likely operate in sub-packages from the slot in his first game back, according to Russini's source, who she strangely refused to name.

Despite missing almost a month, McIntyre still leads all Wave receivers with 35 receptions for 759 yards and 8 touchdowns. Tulane's next best receiver, Jason Mason, has filled in as McIntyre's replacement as the #1 wide out, and has 30 receptions for a career-high 612 yards and 6 touchdowns on the year, including last week's acrobatic game-winning touchdown grab with 0:09 remaining in a 42-38 home win over Ole Miss.

Allen hopes to be available for the team's SEC Championship Game in two weeks.

Tulane | Allen throwing this week
            Wed, 22 Nov 2023 09:39:06 -0700

            report courtesy Britt McHenry, ESPN.com

Britt McHenry of ESPN.com reports that Tulane junior QB Bryce Allen (89 ovr) has begun throwing in practice as he rehabs from a partially torn labrum in his shoulder. The former blue chip high school prospect has not played since week 9 this season after suffering the injury during the second half of the Wave's team's 33-32 win at Tennessee. Green Wave head coach D. Geezy gave McHenry an updated timetable late Tuesday night.

"Right now we believe he is still 2 to 3 weeks away, but he is improving," said Geezy, who also shared with McHenry that Allen would be the starter as soon as he is healthy.

"We'll see where he is at in a couple of weeks and go from there. The hope is that he can return in time for the SEC title game in a couple of weeks, but it is really going to come down to him being cleared for contact by doctors, hopefully soon, and how quickly he gets back to 100%. One thing we're not going to do is throw him out there before he is fully healed though, so we're going to err on the side of caution.

"(Backup QB) Obi Clemons (73 ovr) has certainly played his way into a role and we know we can count on him should we have to go with him against Florida, but once he is ready, Bryce will be back in the lineup and Obi knows that."

            Tulane | Retro-week again
            Wed, 22 Nov 2023 09:42:06 -0700

            report courtesy Eve Jewell, TulaneInsider.com

Eve Jewell of TulaneInsider.com reports that, after it was a hit amongst its fan base this past week, Tulane will turn back the clock one more time this season with its uniform look, and will wear what head coach D. Geezy describes as their "road Conference USA throwback" uniforms for this Saturday's contest at Southern Miss. The uniform combination (green helmets, white jersey, green pants) has not been worn since the team's 55-21 road win over Southern Miss in 2017, which was also the last time the Wave defeated their annual rivals at Hattiesburg, where they have lost each of their last two games played there (2019 and 2021).

"We showed the team a highlight video of our last win at Hattiesburg to show them what it takes to win in a place like that and there was quite a reaction from the group when they saw the uniform combination," said Geezy.

"So we announced after practice that day that we'd go ahead and wear that combo and the guys in the locker room were pretty hyped up about it."

Game 12, Year 14 Preview (2023 season): #6 Tulane at Southern Miss

RIVALRY GAME: THE BATTLE FOR THE BELL

Latest Line (courtesy Bovada - Las Vegas):

              ....................4 1/2....................

2022: Senior RB Buck Johnson III's game-winning 79-yard touchdown came with 7:49 remaining in the contest, making the score 30-26 and capping off a 23-point comeback. | With his team clinging to its 3-point lead, senior DE Chad McGuire read Southern Miss' screen pass attempt and picked the ball off at the Golden Eagles' 47-yard line with 4:22 to go and the USM offense would never see the ball again.

Last Meeting: Then-#3 ranked Southern Miss stormed out to a 23-0 lead, but behind a magnificent rushing performance by senior RB Buck Johnson III, #13 ranked Tulane came back and defeated the rival Golden Eagles 30-26 last season at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Johnson III, playing in the final home of his career, finished the night with a career-high 287 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns, along with 39 receiving yards and a touchdown. His 79-yard fourth quarter touchdown gave his team the lead for the first time in the game with 7:49 remaining, a lead they'd hold onto the rest of the way. The win, which before last week was the largest comeback ever for the Green Wave under head coach D. Geezy, ended their former Conference USA rivals' perfect season and national title dreams.

2021: A rare mistake by former Wave WR Ryan Jean cost Tulane as Golden Eagles senior SS Shane Miller returned his fumble for a touchdown that blew the game wide open at 28-7 early in the third quarter.

Last Meeting at Venue: Then-20th ranked Southern Miss amassed a 28-7 lead and held off a furious Tulane rally, ousting the then-#4 ranked Green Wave 35-28 two seasons ago at rain-soaked Hattiesburg and ending all hopes for a return to the BCS National Championship Game for the Wave that year. Golden Eagles true freshman QB Tony Nealy, playing in place of injured starter Blake Williams, had the game of his life, throwing for 371 yards and 2 touchdowns. Nealy's 51-yard pass completion to WR LaJoshua Campbell with less than a minute remaining set up RB Dougie Cooper's game-winning 9-yard touchdown run. The win was the Golden Eagles' second over Tulane in three tries, as they also beat their former Conference USA rivals 42-35 at Hattiesburg two seasons prior.

Excellent win over Ole Miss, what a game! You had to have been out of your seat running around the house like a mad man after Mason came down with that deflection. I know I would have been! Got to love games like that, those are the moments we play for.

Beautiful game out of Powers too. Like you mentioned, your backs always seem to turn it on when senior night comes around.

Good to see your offensive weapons coming back into play as conference championship week approaches although I will be honest a part of me is going to miss Obi. It wasn't always pretty out of him but the guy was just a winner pure and simple.

Of course, we can't get caught looking ahead this game against Southern Miss is huge. They have a lot of speed at the skill positions and that combo of Cooley and Ivey. They have some really nice freshman pieces in on defense too in Perry and Davis. Those guys could be giving you fits for years to come. Good luck my friend!

No one really stands out on Southern Miss, but it's always cool to see them still doing well so that these games are still fun and tough to play.

Haha...You said it man - I can't describe just how hyped up I was when Mason caught that TD. The game even waited like 2-3 seconds before the TD graphic displayed; it is almost like the CPU refs had to talk it over for a second. That was definitely one of those plays I will remember 10 years from now.

I too will miss Obi. He's been really fun to play with. I will certainly be looking for ways to get him involved, even when Bryce returns. And he has definitely played his way into contention for the starting gig once Allen departs either this off-season or next.

C.J. Ivey gives me nightmares. That speed is deadly. If he gets going early, I have a feeling we will have a tough time slowing him down. They're really a solid overall team that is in a position to give us some issues not only this year, but in future seasons. This has been a really satisfying rivalry.

My plan is to try to get the running game going early and keep that explosive offense of theirs off the field. That no-huddle spread attack they have always seems to give us problems.

Exactly man. I am glad that they didn't go the way of most other Conference USA teams in this game have and completely collapsed. They are a perennial Top 25 team and usually play us very tough, especially at their place.

After losing each of our last two contests in Hattiesburg, we are definitely no longer taking this team lightly. They're legit.

Thanks for checking in fellas...time to start this one up!

Game 12, Year 14 (2023 season): #6 Tulane Green Wave at Southern Miss Golden Eagles

RIVALRY GAME: THE BATTLE FOR THE BELL

                      #6 33 -- 9-3
                      NR 42 -- 10-2

Tulane QB Obi Clemons displays his anguish after he was stuffed at the goal line by MLB Josh Perry (#52) on a potential game-tying two point conversion attempt late in the game.

For the third time in as many tries Tulane falls short in Hattiesburg, downed by rival Southern Miss 42-33 | Green Wave unable to contain Golden Eagles rushing attack as their 9-game winning streak comes to a screeching halt along with long-shot BCS title game chances | Late comeback rally foiled as Wave unable to convert on potential game-tying two point try | Injury bug continues to wreak havoc as team limps into SEC Championship Game in two weeks versus #2 Florida

Hattiesburg, MS -- Each of the last two times Southern Miss and Tulane have met in Hattiesburg, the game was played in nasty, rainy conditions, and both times the Golden Eagles came away with victories, in 2019 and in 2021. This year, the weather was no excuse for the visiting Green Wave, as they lost yet again to their former Conference USA rivals, falling 42-33 Saturday at M.M. Roberts Stadium. USM's offense accounted for 513 total yards, including 306 on the ground, and its defense came up with big plays down the stretch as the home team put a halt to the Wave's 9-game winning streak coming into the contest while also ending their rivals' already-faint national title hopes.

Golden Eagles DE Jimmy Ross' interception off a deflection on just the game's second play from scrimmage gave his team the ball near the goal line and set the tone early.

The game's very first series perhaps provided an omen for the type of difficult task the #6 ranked Green Wave would have on its hands on Saturday. On just the game's second play from scrimmage, QB Obi Clemons took a shot from Southern Miss DT Jeremy Horne near the goal line as he threw the ball, and the hit caused the ball to land in the awaiting hands of DE Jimmy Ross, setting the Golden Eagles up with possession of the football at their own 1-yard line less than a minute into the game. Two plays later, USM QB Doug Cooley's 1-yard touchdown run put his team up 7-0 just moments into the contest.

Later in the first quarter, Cooley would connect with WR Tony Parrish for a 22-yard touchdown, giving their team a 14-3 advantage near the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter however, Tulane bounced back.

Despite losing WR Brandon McIntyre to a foot injury in the first quarter in what was his first game back from a previous injury, Clemons rallied his troops. The redshirt sophomore's 11-yard touchdown run in the second quarter cut his team's deficit to 14-10. Then, on their next offensive possession, Clemons' scramble drill that saw him run backwards 15 yards to keep the play alive before throwing while on the run resulted in a 39-yard touchdown pass to WR Jason Mason, giving the Wave a 17-14 lead.

Clemons did damage with his legs all afternoon, as he finished with a career-high 94 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns on the day.

Southern Miss (10-2) would not let the half end that way however as they'd go on a 10-play drive to close out the second quarter and Cooley's 8-yard touchdown strike to WR Dylan Hughes gave their team a 21-17 lead at the break. Cooley finished the game 19 of 28 for 207 yards to go along with the 2 touchdown passes, though he did also throw 2 interceptions.

In the second half, the Golden Eagles came out like gang-busters, using a heavy dose of its running game. Led by RB C.J. Ivey, who finished with a season-high 209 rushing yards, along with true freshman backup RB Randy Davis, Southern Miss would dominate the third quarter. Davis' touchdown runs of 67 yards and 14 yards, both on back-to-back drives, gave Southern Miss a 35-20 advantage headed into the game's final quarter.

USM true freshman RB Randy Davis rushed for 102 yards and 2 touchdowns on Saturday, amazingly doing the damage on only 4 carries. His team finished with over 300 rushing yards on the ground as USM's rushing attack played a key role in the game's final quarter and a half.
Davis finished the game with 102 rushing yards on only 4 carries, much to the chagrin of Tulane defensive coordinator Steve Ellis.

"They ran through us like we were made of (expletive) paper," said Ellis.

The Green Wave, despite trailing by 15 points, would not go away that easily, and rallied in the fourth quarter, as they have so many times this season.

Senior RB Tim Powers, fresh off his career-high 267-yard rushing performance a week ago, would burst through for a 47-yard touchdown run early in the game's final quarter that cut the Wave's deficit to 35-27 with 8:52 remaining. Powers finished the game with a team-high 147 rushing yards and was the primary back most of the fourth quarter, as sophomore RB Tony Tompkins was forced to exit the game with a shoulder injury late in the third quarter.

Later in the fourth quarter, Tulane would re-gain possession and go on an 8-play march with an opportunity to tie the game. Clemons' second rushing touchdown of the game, this one from 5 yards away, made the score 35-33. However, the redshirt sophomore backup playing in place of injured starter Bryce Allen was stuffed behind the line of scrimmage on a two-point conversion option play by Southern Miss true freshman MLB Josh Perry, keeping the Wave's deficit at two points with just over four minutes remaining.

"We had the look we wanted on the play, Perry just made a hell of a read and didn't hesitate the way we were maybe counting on him too. Obi didn't even have a chance to think about pitching the ball; it was so quick," said Tulane offensive coordinator Curtis Byrd.

Tulane's defense, who struggled all game long to contain the Southern Miss offense, was able to get a stop and get the ball back to its offense. However a quick three and out meant Tulane would have to punt the ball back to USM with just over two minutes remaining and two timeouts left. And this time, the Green Wave defense faltered.

With the ball at the Golden Eagles' 29-yard line, Ivey would break off an 8-yard run down to the Green Wave 37-yard line, setting up a 2nd down and 2. Then, with the Wave down to its final timeout and needing a stop in order to have a chance to get the ball back, Ivey broke loose for a would-be first down carry. However, with Tulane down to its last timeout and under two minutes remaining, the Wave defense allowed Ivey to take the run the distance to make the score 42-33 with 1:44 remaining.

Saturday's sellout crowd witnessed their team defeat their former Conference USA rival for a third straight time at "The Rock."

"We sold out versus the run, with it being a 2nd and short, and told our defense during the timeout that if he breaks past the wall, which he did, to let him score. If we tackle him after getting first down yardage, the game is pretty much over and they can kneel on the ball." said Ellis.

The Green Wave did nothing with its strategic opportunity with the football however, down by 9 with under two minutes to go. Clemons' deep pass attempt to Mason on the very first play of the ensuing possession was picked off by USM FS Isaiah Woods, turning the ball over and allowing Southern Miss to run out the clock for its third straight win in Hattiesburg over their rivals.

"They say one is a fluke, two is a coincidence, and three is a trend, and there is no doubt about it - Southern Miss, in this building, has our number," said Green Wave head coach D. Geezy.

"They have a very good program and there is no question that they're getting better each and every year and their style of play is certainly giving us problems; it is something we'll have to evaluate moving forward. We roll through the SE-friggin'-C and then lose here every other year - that cannot keep happening."

Tulane (9-3) will travel to Atlanta in two weeks to face #2-ranked and defending conference champion Florida (12-0) in the SEC Championship Game. The two teams last met in the 2021 conference title game, a game Tulane won 20-0. The Gators would go on to defeat Alabama 20-17 in last season's title game, setting up this year's matchup between the last two SEC champions. A win by Florida should net them an opportunity to play in this year's BCS National Championship Game, set to take place at Tulane's home venue, the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.

Notes: Tulane's loss on Saturday was the team's fourth to Southern Miss under head coach D. Geezy, giving the Golden Eagles the most wins over the Green Wave by any single team during Geezy's 14-season tenure...Geezy was mum after the game on the status of injured junior WR Brandon McIntyre (90 ovr), who was making his first appearance after being out for 3 weeks with an abdominal injury. However a team source indicated that the team fears he has suffered a foot stress fracture that will likely cause him to miss the remainder of the season, though there is a slim possibility he could return for the team's bowl game...Geezy shared with reporters after the game that the shoulder injury suffered by RB Tony Tompkins (74 ovr) is believed to be a slight sprain however it should not cause him to miss any time, with two weeks to heal before the Wave's conference championship game matchup with #2 Florida...Saturday's loss marks Tulane's third of the year, giving them their most regular season losses in a decade, as they finished 8-4 in the 2013 regular season.

Southern Miss QB Doug Cooley, WR Dylan Hughes, and OL Adam Warren celebrate following the game's final whistle.

The atmosphere in Hattiesburg was lit as Southern Miss players ran onto the field in pregame.

DT Jeremy Horne bulldozed his way through blockers to lay this hit on QB Obi Clemons which led to an errant pass that ended up in the hands of DE Jimmy Ross (#61) on just the game's second play from scrimmage.

WR Brandon McIntyre, who was making his return after a 3-game absence due to an abdominal injury, left the game after his only catch of the day due to a foot injury sustained on the play.

QB Doug Cooley was unspectacular but steady, throwing for 207 yards and 2 touchdowns on the afternoon.

QB Obi Clemons gave the Southern Miss defense fits with his legs all game long, rushing for a career-high 94 yards and 2 touchdowns on the day.

Tulane head coach D. Geezy checked in on RB Tony Tompkins as trainers visited with him at the end of the third quarter. Tompkins sustained a shoulder injury on the previous play and was unable to return.

Senior RB Tim Powers found a camera to celebrate in front of at the conclusion of his 47-yard fourth quarter touchdown run.

With his team up 42-33 with under two minutes to play, Southern Miss FS Isaiah Woods' interception on a deep pass attempt to WR Jason Mason sealed the deal for the Golden Eagles.

Tulane OLB Chuckie Coley was one of the last members of the Green Wave to leave the field after his team dropped its third straight game to rival Southern Miss when playing in Hattiesburg.

Southern Miss strikes again. This rivalry is something serious always close and when you go to the Burg it's like they bring extra passion. Hate to see the streak end

Damn, what a run it was for your team. Sucks that it didn't end the way we all wanted but it's college football and anything can happen. I feel your pain in this loss.

Because I'm obligated to comment on this I'm excited Michigan is in the title game, lol. I'm sure that's gonna be a great game.

Good luck in the SEC Championship game! You guys can spoil their season much like yours did.

Florida is crazy good. Averaging 40.3 per game and giving up just 11.5 per game. Surreal. Just to put it in real life circumstances, since 2003-04, teams with greater than 28 point differential per game are:

                              2003-04 Louisville, 30.1
                              2005-06 Texas, 33.8
                              2008-09 Florida, 29.2
                              2008-09 USC, 28.5
                              2010-11 Boise St., 32.3
                              2013-14 Florida St., 41.8

Have I not paid enough attention in the other seasons of this dynasty or has Florida had just a crazy season?

That's absolutely devastating... seems like the clock finally struck midnight on Obi's Cinderella story under center unfortunately. Definitely think with the squad that you have though that you'll have a very good shot at playing spoiler!
