Down 38-35 and facing a 3rd and 19 from the Rebels' 28-yard line, QB Obi Clemons' desperation heave into the end zone was deflected by Ole Miss CB Bobby Motley before WR Jason Mason hauled it in while keeping his feet in-bounds for the game-winning touchdown. The circus catch gave Tulane its first lead of the game with only 0:09 remaining in the contest.

New Orleans, LA -- Last season on Senior Night, Tulane got a career-high 287-yard rushing performance by then-senior RB Buck Johnson III on its way to erasing a 23-0 deficit to win 30-26 over Southern Miss, which was the largest comeback ever for the Green Wave under head coach D. Geezy. Thursday night, history repeated itself once again on Senior Night as the Wave rallied back from a 38-14 halftime deficit, getting a huge rushing performance out of senior RB Tim Powers along with a ridiculous acrobatic catch by WR Jason Mason in the game's closing seconds to defeat Ole Miss 42-38 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, eclipsing Geezy's team's previous largest comeback by 1-point.

Ole Miss RB J.T. Higgins' 63-yard touchdown run on the game's opening possession began what was a long first half for the Tulane defense.
Ole Miss (5-6) was able to amass a large first quarter lead through a mix of power-running along with big plays by its defense. RB J.T. Higgins' 63-yard touchdown run capped off a quick 5-play 82-yard drive to open the game and gave the Rebels an early 7-0 lead. Higgins finished the game with 108 rushing yards on only 8 carries.
After a quick three and out by the Green Wave offense, Ole Miss was able to quickly come back again with a methodical 10-play drive which concluded with a 5-yard touchdown run by senior RB Chris McDonald that increased the Rebels' lead to 14-0.
It wasn't long after that when Tulane QB Obi Clemons' pass on the Wave's next drive was picked off by Ole Miss FS Jon Harrison and the redshirt senior returned the pick 33 yards for another score, giving the Rebels a lightning-quick 21-0 lead to start the game.
Fortunately for Tulane, they finally caught a break after Harrison's pick-six, getting on the scoreboard via RB/KR Tony Tompkins' 94-yard return touchdown on the ensuing kickoff. Tompkins' sixth career return touchdown (4 kickoff returns + 2 punt returns) made the score 21-7 and seemingly put the Wave back in the game.
Not so fast my friend.
Behind the passing of QB David Green, who threw for a whopping career-low 6 yards in last season's 59-7 loss to the Green Wave in Oxford, the Rebels were able to increase their lead. After his team's defense allowed Clemons to complete an 8-yard touchdown pass to WR Lionel Parks to make the score 24-14, cutting into the Ole Miss lead, Green got to work.
His 92-yard touchdown pass to WR Jasper Adams made the score 31-14. Then, after Rebels CB Matt Nugent got his defense its second interception off Clemons in the first half, Green's 17-yard touchdown pass on a corner route to FB Alan Porter at the back of the end zone increased the lead to 38-14 going into halftime. Green finished the first half 14 of 17 for 213 yards to go along with the 2 touchdowns and no interceptions, a stark contrast to last season's disastrous performance versus the Wave.
On the other end of the spectrum, Clemons finished the first half just 4 of 11 for 46 yards to go along with 1 touchdowns and 2 interceptions, a much less efficient performance than his 4 touchdown, no interception outing in last week's 41-24 win at Arkansas, a game they trailed 24-10 at halftime and later came back to win, just as they had the week before in a 27-24 win at home versus Alabama- ironically, those comeback wins provided a glimpse of what was to come in the second half.
A 12-play 77-yard march that lasted 4:13 to start the third quarter ended with a 5-yard touchdown run by Powers to cut the Wave's deficit to 38-21. Then, after getting a quick three and out by Ole Miss on its next drive, Powers' bulldozing 66-yard touchdown run in which he broke through the grasp of two defenders quickly cut his team's deficit to 10, making the score 38-28 with 2:31 to go in the third quarter. Powers finished the game with a career-high 267 rushing yards on 26 carries.

RB Tim Powers somehow broke through two tackles before accelerating to the end zone on this emphatic 66-yard touchdown run that put Tulane back in the game late in the third quarter.
"We went into the halftime locker room and decided that we were having some issues with our passing game but Tim was averaging somewhere in the neighborhood of 8 yards per carry when we did decide to run the ball," said Tulane offensive coordinator Curtis Byrd.
"We knew we couldn't come back all on one drive and didn't want to go pass-heavy. So, even though we were down big, we decided we still had enough time to go with a ball-control offense and we ended up only passing the ball 7 times in the second half while rushing the ball with a ton of success."
And that they did.
Later, a 10-play 54-yard march which featured all runs lasted 3:29 and ended up with 3-yard touchdown on an option pitch from Clemons to Tompkins. Tompkins' second touchdown of the game made the score 38-35 with 6:40 remaining to play.

With his team trailing 38-35 late in the fourth quarter, junior FS LeCharles Smith Jr. intercepted QB David Green's pass on 3rd and goal to keep the Green Wave's hopes alive.
Following Tompkins' score, Green would direct a 10-play drive that penetrated all the way down to the Tulane 2-yard line with under four minutes to play, putting his team in position to put the game away. However, facing a 2nd and goal from the 2-yard line, Green's attempt to hit RB J.T. Higgins would end up in disaster as Green Wave junior FS LeCharles Smith Jr. picked off the errant pass near the goal line, and his first interception this season gave his team back possession of the football at the 4-yard line with 3:30 remaining to play down by three.
"They had completed 2 or 3 of those types of flare-out passes to the running back earlier in the game and we told our guys to be on the lookout and Smith just made a play," said Wave defensive coordinator Steve Ellis.
Tulane, trailing 38-35, now needed a big drive to complete its comeback. Despite little time remaining, they stayed true to what got them in position to win - the legs of Powers. The Wave would go on a 13-play 96-yard march that featured 10 runs and drained almost the entire clock, moving the football to the Ole Miss red zone with seconds remaining. After a holding penalty backed them up to the Rebels 28-yard line, the Wave faced a 3rd and 19 with 0:15 to go and were out of timeouts.
With the thought in mind that the game would essentially end if a Wave player was tackled in-bounds, Geezy decided to go for the win. Clemons took a snap from shotgun and heaved the ball to Mason at the back of the end zone despite the fact that he was well-covered by CB Bobby Motley. Motley would tip the ball away, however with an amazing display of concentration, Mason was able to corral the pass off of the deflection while also keeping his feet in-bounds at the back boundary-line of the end zone for the touchdown. The circus catch gave Tulane its first lead of the game at 42-38 with just 0:09 to go, completing the 24-point comeback, its largest under Geezy during his 14-season tenure.
Ole Miss would have one last opportunity, but Green's desperation heave from his own 20-yard line was batted down on the game's final play, sending the Rebels home losers of yet another close game.
"I have to give a lot of credit to a lot of guys that stepped up, first and foremost, the defense," said Geezy, whose team held Green to just 60 passing yards and completely shut down the Rebels offense in the second half.
"Secondly, I can't say enough about Powers and the job that he did. He really put this team on his back. You also have to give a lot of credit to the hog-mollies up front for opening up rushing lanes consistently. We never punted in the second half and literally had four possession that went for four touchdowns. And how about that gutsy throw by Obi at the end?
"This was just a tremendous team win and anytime you can come back from down big, it makes it that much sweeter."
Tulane (9-2) will travel next week to face Southern Miss (9-2) at Hattiesburg in their annual "Battle for the Bell" rivalry game. The Green Wave has not won at M. M. Roberts Stadium since 2017, having dropped each of their last two contests versus their rivals on the road. The Green Wave lost 35-28 two seasons ago at USM, and in 2019, they dropped a 42-35 decision, both games played in rainy conditions.

Senior RB Tim Powers did all that he could on Senior Night, rushing for 2 touchdowns and a career-high 267 yards.

RIVALRY GAME: THE BATTLE FOR THE BELL
#6

Tulane players ran onto the field in pregame sporting their "Conference USA throwback" uniforms.

It was a long first half for QB Obi Clemons; here he gets sacked by Rebels OLB Lucas Singletary.

Ole Miss FS Jon Harrison quieted the crowd after his 33-yard interception return touchdown made the score 21-0 in the first quarter.

RB Tony Tompkins and OL Garth Doucette, a junior former 2-star recruit who plays on special teams, celebrate following Tompkins' 94-yard kickoff return touchdown that cut their team's deficit to 21-7.

Tulane had trouble guarding Ole Miss slot WR Jasper Adams as he torched the Wave secondary for 135 receiving yards on the night, including this 92-yard touchdown.

Tulane's defense got after QB David Green in the second half as true freshman DE T.J. Pearson picked up his 5th sack of the year late in the third quarter.

Green Wave nickel defender Jonathan Smith, seen here tackling RB Chris McDonald for a loss, hopes his team can add a 7th SEC title banner to the Mercedes-Benz Superdome rafters in two weeks.

The Tulane faithful went berserk following WR Jason Mason's game-winning circus catch with 0:09 remaining in the game.
