DD Defensive AI Broken?

I admit, I'm not the best The Show player out there, I have prolonged slumps/games that are embarrassing but today I felt a slight bit cheated.

Playing against my White Sox tonight, I couldnt score a run to save my life... In 14 innings, I had 6 hits and here's where the problem is... I noticed the outfielders know where the ball is going just as it cracks off the bat. On three separate occasions I was robbed of multi-base hits by what I would describe as pseudo-psychic outfielders. Luckily, the game showed a "Showtrack" for 2 of the 3 hits and having to cross nearly a third of the outfield Avisail Garcia, Cody Asche and Melky Cabrera (most of all, Melky) had 100% route effiecency to the ball.

I'm not usually one to complain. I love this game but in this game, I felt cheated. If you saw the Melky one, it was insane.

I don't know, I hope I'm crazy-talking and this was a one-off thing but Melky, Garcia and Asche are all horrid outfielders, they have no business doing what they do. Baseball is a game of inches but until the outfielders play realistically, it won't matter how many flight paths the ball can take.

I've experienced the opposite. I've had struggles at SS and 2B picking up slow liners and even some grounders. I've got Kipnis and Reyes at short, neither are bad fielders. But I usually give up 1-2 hits a game on balls that should be easy outs.


I haven't had many issues in the outfield, they seem to get to most balls, which is common. If you watch a game, there's usually on 1-2 balls hit into gaps that split the outfielders for extra bases. I've found the hitting mechanics to be relatively realistic.

No, you're experiencing the exact same thing he is. He was getting robbed of hits, you are giving up hits. It's the same mechanic working on both sides of the ball. I've noticed this so much because there are no seeing eye singles anywhere but up the middle when I'm hitting, but the infield is relatively realistic when I'm defending.

And OP, yes, I've noticed that too. It's very frustrating and seems to worsen the longer you play. I think there's something off about the calculations that are run. It's almost like there is something that calculates "hit or out" and then makes things happen to bring about that result.

I'm literally not. He is experiencing an issue in which hits are being taken away, I am experience an issue where they are being generated. That is by its very definition, an opposite.

Defense is the biggest weak point of this game. People complain about too many HR, but that's got nothing on the way defensive plays unfold. I hit a slow grounder down the line at third in one game today. The 3B slowly moved to it, whipped it back across his body, and started a double play on a grounder that took probably 4 seconds to get touched. Acrobatic plays in this game, particularly off-balance throws from infielders, are absurdly bad.

Someone else mentioned carom plays by OFs, and I've been seeing that terribly now as well. Had my LF simply acknowledge a ball off the wall after it hit, causing it to go way off and result in a leadoff HR. I've had OFs and my 1B simply reject catching the ball as a requirement for a fielder, letting balls fall to the ground next to them. OF selection on left-center or right-center fly balls is terrible. I had to tell it to switch 3 times to get it to select my CF as the game was trying to force me to use my LF on a ball he'd never reach (but the CF got easily).

It's all a mess. The ball physics stuff is cool and all, but I hope their next move for '18 is to vastly improve infielder defense above all else. There's no reason the defenders should stand like statues in an extreme pull shift as I step to the plate with Matt Carpenter, holding a bunt, and getting a single to the 3B side every time. They're incredibly stupid.

The more I play, the more the defense bothers me. Its not the same for my team and the CPU team. I have had more laser beam line drives robbed by jumping/diving infielders or sliding/diving outfielders its driving me nuts. Yet, at least twice my catcher has dropped pop-ups right in front of the plate. Slow grounders get by Pedrioa because he looks like he is running in mud. I constantly have to switch off my RF or LF to get to my CF when the ball is 20 feet away from my CF and 100 feet away from the others.

I have seen where the outfield is playing my hitter straight up but when I blast it into the gap, the right or left fielder is magically in the gap. Don't get me started with bounces off the wall. I hit a ball off the wall they play it perfectly and I get a single. The CPU hits it off the wall its a guaranteed triple unless the guy is slow. I have yet to see the CPU make a throwing error either, every ball is scooped out at first.

I will get blasted for this but I feel like games are predetermined sometimes when you play the CPU. I have had common/low bronze pitchers throw like they are diamonds. Even when you square up a pitch it goes right to someone or they make a spectacular play. Then my silver/gold/ diamond pitcher cant find the strike zone and 70+ fielding guys are making errors left and right. Its annoying sometimes.

Believe me, you're not saying anything I haven't thought before. I just lost a Conquest game 1-0. It was on a leadoff homer by Jonathan Villar on a low fastball. I almost tied it, loading getting 1st and 2nd with 2 out. I then had Kinsler hit one to left, but it just so happened the LF was playing super shallow and I had to hold. Then hit a liner to left center, but it was just low enough for the SS to run over and take it away, game over.

Yeah, the CPU is always in the perfect spot. I think I've seen one or two diving/shoestring catches muffed in about 50. I too have experience with auto selecting the outfielder in the furthest position.

I also notice that my infielders don't even bother going after balls unless hit directly at them. To their left or right? Eh, they just watch it go by and roll into the outfield while the 36 speed CPU player legs it into a double.

Not sure if this one is my settings and/or user error but a lot of times I'll have a ball hit to my infielder and I'll preload the throw to turn a double play... they just stand there with the ball ready to throw it, I have to hit the button again to finish the animation, usually resulting in an out but a failed dp. Though if the guy on first is 79 speed or more he's usually safe too.

My biggest problem is with the infield as well. Catchers are slow to get out of a crouch to get a dribbler which should be an easy play. 3b don't crash as hard as they should on dribblers down the line. every short stop in the game can make a "jeter" throw from the 5.5 hole on the grass.

This is exactly what I meant when I started this thread. It's like outfielders warp to gaps and their shift is always in the right spot. I don't think I've mentioned this but I was playing on Veteran on the game I made the thread about. It really is annoying and I hope they get it patched. I never felt this way in hundreds of hours in MLB The Show 16.

That used to happen to me all the time until I turned 'Throw Cancelling' off.

Played a quick conquest game this morning. No runners on and a hit on the shortstop side of 2nd base and it had control on my 2nd baseman!!! Expecting to run to the right with my shortstop I pulled my CF out of position and it turned into a double...
